Not looking good for Caruana as he is down 2.0 - 0.0 after the first two rapid playoff games (the pair drew all 12 of their matches). Carlsen only needs a draw in one of the final two games of the 4 game rapid playoff to take the title.

It's a shame he lost it in the fashion he did. Caruana looked more prepared and a true champion during the 12 rounds, but always seemed to take his foot off of Carlsens' throat. Here's hoping for a repeat in two years!
More prepared simply meaning that he had memorized more Stockfish lines than Magnus had. There was a huge difference in Caruana's play once they got past the memorized computer lines.
I suspect that is the reason Caruana is rated higher in traditional than in Rapid / Blitz formats, where memorized lines are not as helpful. It's a shame because he's a great player, but this is where chess is headed these days.
I would disagree - that would be doing a disservice to Fabio. Yes there were more memorized lines, but he also outplayed Carlsen once those lines went out the window, but couldn't get it done. It's physically and mentally exhausting when you are playing a 6 hour game against the best player in the world.
And Magnus Carlsen retains his title!
