Thought we could have a running thread of players that have left the team prior to the end of the season.
| Name | Position | Year | String |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sean Savoy | WR | SO | 2 |
| Devante Smith | DB | RFR | 3 |
| D'Andre Plantin | OL | RJR | 2 |
| Rico Kearney | MLB | RFR | 2 |
| Trevon Hill | DE | RJR | 1 |

Can we get a running open scholarship count after the transfer announcements?
For this year, there are 16 available slots, after the current level of attrition.
We have
1716 commitments for the 2019 cycle.I would expect us to take at least two more players. That would say we should expect to lose
threetwo more people (unless we lose a couple commits).edit: Dorlus has decommited.
Did Devante ever get fully healthy...i know he had a bad knee injury when he got here...
No. He was never going to see the field because of the injuries.
This is a good thread idea. Wish the best for all these guys.
open up those slots
Can we add position and string to the list especially for the names I don't recognize off the bat?
Great work. If you could email that to me I'll put in main post and credit you.

right click in space, click view page source, and copy the table code into your OP.
How do I right click from iPhone?
right
Sorry about the delay, was at work. But it looks like you got it figured out!
Is Willis on scholarship? I know he came in as a walk-on, but have never heard he earned a scholarship. If he isn't on one, then you can bet that one of the open slots goes to him as he's earned it.
From what I heard he got a scholarship when he got the starting job.
A bit of meta, but this thread seems redundant to me. To me it makes sense to start a thread for each player or coach that leaves the program and to center the discussion for that particular person in it. There might be some overlap in circumstance, but not enough to warrant another mega-thread. (Perhaps after the attrition cycle is over it's worth a recap or summary, but not a running list.)
I've emphasized this before, but I don't envision the boards here as a series of long running threads. They get incredibly bloated and decay over time (e.g. continuing this thread in 2019 when the guts and OP are about 2018 does not make sense). Specific topics are much easier to identify via the Tracker and have a focused discussion around.
Sorry Joe I meant this more of a thread about players who have left prior to the end of the season.
This is a good point, Joe. I feel that tends to turn into have one conversation across multiple threads, exchanging bloat for dilution. It's the same reason we have one monthly catch-all recruiting thread. But at the same time, someone is likely to start a thread about the individual news anyway, so who knows.
Maybe edit this title to "VT 2018 attrition thread"?
maybe we can turn it into an ACC post season attrition catch all thread including VT? (some guys we wont have to do or don't want to deal with playing against)
UNC WR- Anthony Ratliff Williams declares for the NFL draft.
Honestly, having a thread like this would have been nice this past season. Sure, there are individual threads for each player that leaves, but it's easy to forget that Player X transferred in April and that Player Y tore his ACL in May, especially if they hadn't been major contributors yet.
We gonna ignore Trevon Hill?
I think thatd probably be best
Choosing to leave and being told to leave are different.
It's still attrition
So the discussion has popped up on a few different threads on what is considered a "normal" attrition rate. I was reminded that a few years ago a redditor put together the numbers for Power 5 attrition rates for 2002 through 2014 signing classes as of 2015.
It's interesting that only 2 teams maintained an attrition rate below 25% and only 10 teams maintained a rate below 33.33%.
The good guys came in at 39% while the average for the ACC was 37%.
Even so these rates may not be normative as of present day given rule changes/general changes to the college football landscape.
Seems to me like folks are looking for negatives after a sub-par season. Looks like we aren't anything special or unusual in attrition but some want to make it seem so for reasons I can't fathom.
Pretty much normal, though sometimes I wish it weren't.
Personally, I just like to keep track where everyone's at. I apologize if that comes off as being overly negative.
It's hard enough to keep up with the players currently at, or being recruited by VT football and basketball.
No need to apologize if you have more bandwidth than that to allocate. Some people do focus on the empty part of the glass, though.
Wasn't dogging you for your post at all. Just what some folks have been making of the attrition issue recently. I didn't take your post as negative and apologize to you if I came off as doing so.
May I suggest adding a column for the school that they ended up going to? Would help keep track of these Hokies in their next step.
Cam Goode is someone else to add to the list.
He didn't even make it to the season same reason mook and Adonis aren't on the list.
But Goode leaving did open up a schlorship whereas Mook and Adonis would have been seniors this year and their schlorships were going to be open after this year one way or another.
What about CJ Carroll?
TBF, CJ would have been aging out at the end of the season anyway. Yes, he was an early departure but his scholarship was opening up regardless.
He was just too hurt to keep going.
Several guys with eligibility left who are leaving the program/graduating as well. Not in the two-deep.
This isn't limited to football. Our women's basketball team lost a freshman guard.

The part that sticks out to me is:
He implies that there is some generational difference in attitude that newcomers think they should be getting more playing time. But then says that has to be earned.
Yep another freshmen has really stepped up and she saw where her non injury playing time was.
Seriously, though, you want a competitive program, which means you have to play better than the people getting playing time in order to get playing time yourself.
I can see how it would be hard for athletes who have been playing well at a lower level to adapt to that, though.
I think you're on to something with the "generational difference in attitude" thing. Seems like it's harder to get some athletes to listen to the folks that matter instead of their suck ups and fluffsters on social media. Few folks in life get to forgo the hard work it takes to be the best they can be.
