I haven't paid alot of attention to the weather here in Charlotte, but my family in Bristol keeps saying that they hear that we are going to have more here than in Virginia. Last I saw was 1-4 in Charlotte, 4-8 in the Lake Norman Area, and 8-12 in Statesville, and not beginning until late Saturday night.
If we get 8-12 inches in Charlotte, CMS will be out until February...lol

Iredell County section of NCDOT is on it. I couldn't find a main road without solution on it. I know the district that covers Rowan has not put solution down on 150 between Mooresville and Salisbury. But this district covers Davidson County and Lexington and as you know, there are more people over there.
It seems like there's a pretty sizeable contingent of North Charlotte and LKN suburb dwellers here on TKP. We need to do a game watch next season.

They keep saying significant but don't really give an estimate in inches. And as I've experienced already a couple of times, what I get in christiansburg at home, may not be what they get in Roanoke at work, let alone the other three areas we have systems in.

Looks like I'm going into my crawlspace tomorrow to insulate the pipes that froze last year. Seriously, how was the hot water line to the sink closest to the water heater the only line in the house that froze?
You can heat trace the pipe if it's a consistent problem.
I'm considering it. It is PEX so at least the chance of the pipe bursting is minimal.

After a keg fueled argument back in the day about this, we put two ice trays in the freezer. One with hot water, one with cold water. The cold water froze first all three times we tried it.

So blacksburg... youre gonna get snow
Long and the short of it is a system is gonna come up from the south and if you haven't seen me give this schpeel before that typically means a larger snowstorm than one just cruising east from the west. This is a dicey one, as I think the accumulation line is really close the blacksburg area. Somebody somewhere is probably gonna get something like 20" of snow but this far out thats tough to say (hell even the day before with snowstorms guessing the bullseye is a friggin crapshoot: See blizzard of 2014 in da burg, most generous forecasts had 9-12")
ANYWHO As im sure you're all wondering outside of blacksburg whose gonna get pummeled?! Well...temperature lines make that tough, im sure as far east as richmond will be seeing some snow and some gross mix, however I'm not entirely sure if its going to be cold enough.
I think regions as far north as Charlottesville might see a few inches of snow but nothing to significant (maybe like 2-3"?) Really the hardest hit region for this system falls in the Appalachia region that is Asheville up to da burg. I think regions like Raleigh will see a wintry mix with some accumulation but I think itll be closer to 4 than some of the 8" of snow people are throwing around. With some lucky SOB region getting like 20 freaking inches of snow. EDIT forgot to mention, Richmond might see some wintry mix and all around just not pleasant weather but again I dont think accumulation will be bad. However if you're heading towards the 757 expect your usual idiot drivers to be even dumber in gross precipitation
So there ya have it. God speed everyone I'll try to stay on this tomorrow and early saturday but I've gotta get a presentation on machine learning tomorrow before going to my wifes work party

It really depends on how much this storm hangs south, as a poster below said the storm track ha shifted south a tad. I'd prepare for the worst until this bad boy is zeroed in

Well, as of this morning the GFS has it completely missing Blacksburg and the Euro is showing around 8 inches. I don't think the models know what's going to happen yet. So as my grandpa used to say, "Walk outside if you want to know the weather."

If you're flying American, there is a travel advisory in place for Roanoke. This allows you to proactively change your flights before they get canceled. It is helping me get back to Roanoke Saturday night instead of Sunday from Taiwan.

Meh... move the timing a couple weeks closer to Christmas and I'd be happy. But, dealing with the cluster in NoVA after a storm like this is rarely fun unless you have no one else to take care of, loads of adult beverages, and a backlog of movies and video games to get through. I'm going to say we have roughly 15 - 16 inches here in Radford. Measured it earlier at 12 and it has been coming down for 2 hours since then.
Can confirm, christiansburg has 17 inches and its still snowing, though much much lower rate. I think we mite get another inch tonite. I was glad the water density of this snow was low. That helped with the loads on the hot tub cover n my wifes vintage 1967 camper. It was relatively easy to scrap them off.

Drove back from Richmond this morning, about a 3hr drive...took me 5hrs. 58 bypass around Danville hadn't been touched. Annnd it's still dumping here.
I can tell you that for Richmond this was a blown forecast. 24 hours ago they said 1-3 maybe. We are sitting on about 6 now and it's dumping ass. We may end up with 10 if it keeps coming down. Work tomorrow is gonna be crazy.

According to local news (nbc, WTOP, weather underground), the DMV area is now looking at anywhere from flurries up to 3" tonight.
VDOT was plowing shut all the feeder road entrances to keep 460 and 114 open earlier. It made it challenging to get to and from the basketball game earlier.
Sitting on nine inches in Mechanicsville now and still snowing. Kids are ecstatic, parents are happy we went grocery shopping last night.
Drove from Mechanicsville to Short Pump earlier tonight, took over an hour and a half and involved only a *little* pushing in the apartment complex parking lot.
