A Roanoke family is giving $50 million to Virginia Tech to be used to attract top-ranked scientists to its Roanoke research center and to hasten the pace of the region's economic growth.
Virginia Tech President Tim Sands and Gov. Ralph Northam plan Thursday morning to announce the gift from Heywood and Cynthia Fralin and the Horace G. Fralin Charitable Trust during a ceremony on the grounds of Tech's health sciences and technology campus in Roanoke. The Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute will now be called the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC.
Really big news for some of the best people I know...they're literally trying to find a cure for cancer.

Maybe, if it creates more demand for the Roanoke airport that leads to better flight selection which leads to easier access to BBurg for 5 star recruits and their families which reduces the "Blacksburg is too rural/far from places" excuse for not getting 5 stars. Makes sense right?

One of the articles explained that it's the same family, but a different brother made the donation for the FBC.
I'm a so happy they made those donations, but I can't imagine having enough money in my family that we make multiple 8 figure donations.

Whoever said Tech should strive to be the east coast Stanford should be happy about this. The pieces are falling into place now that we have buttered up Amazon with the NOVA graduate degree center or whatever its called. They have a cartoonish tree mascot we have a cartoonish turkey. They have obnoxious dweebs Cal as a rival we have annoying nerds GT. They are at 37.44 degrees latitude we are at 37.22. Now we only need Roanoke to become San Francisco and Christiansburg to be as awesome as Oakland and we are set!
Yeah but Christiansburg doesn't need/want the Raiders or Athletics. Though, moving the Warriors to Roanoke would be nice for the Curry family.
