Geoff Collins to Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech has its new coach.

Collins has been the Temple head coach for the past two seasons, leading the Owls to seasons of 7-6 and 8-4. Before that, he was defensive coordinator at Florida (2015-16) and Mississippi State (2013-14). Collins left Mississippi State after the 2014 season and before the Bulldogs played against Tech in the Orange Bowl that season.

Collins, 47, is seen as energetic and innovative and has a reputation as a strong recruiter. In the second of his two stops at Tech, in 2006, he was credited with helping put together the Yellow Jackets' famed recruiting class that included Derrick Morgan, Jonathan Dwyer, Morgan Burnett and Joshua Nesbitt. Another member of that class, Roddy Jones, called Collins "ahead of the curve" in a recent interview with the AJC.

Way to bury the lede

The Triple Option is dead! FAM!

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I won't believe it until I see them actually run a normal offense with my own eyes.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

This looks like it spells the end of the option offense at GT. Gonna need a few years to get this offensive transition down.

Oh yeah this is also relevant and I still laugh every time I see it:

(add if applicable) /s

At least he's ahead of the curve and doesn't run an offense from 19 dickety 2. I guess GT will see some down years before they get "his recruits" in.

Nineteen dickety two was a good year.

plus Hugh Freeze to Liberty....

Hugh Freeze will be able to get away with murder at Liberty. A match made in heaven.

What's
Important
Now

I thought this was a joke at first but apparently the universe has a sense of humor. One sanctimoniously corrupt coach for a sanctimoniously corrupt institution. You can't make this stuff up.

Is there a morality clause in our football contract with them? If so I hope Whit uses it.

Not sure if this is positive or not for us. He managed to win at Temple.

So did Al Golden.

Using /s is for cowards.

Any word on which Denny's he is currently managing?

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

No, but I've got #sauces that say he still shits himself and goes fetal anytime he hears the intro to Enter Sandman.

The difference is that we don't recruit head to head with Miami often. Our recruiting footprint is basically the east coast starting in DMV/Baltimore going south to Atlanta area. We want the worst recruiters in those schools as possible. Having great recruiters as PSU and Clemson, much less UNC and GT will be a thorn in our side.

The best case scenario for us in the ACC would be to see Syracuse, BC, and the Florida schools get really good (strengthen the conference), and see Clemson, the NC schools and GT fail (make recruiting easy for us). Unfortunately, this isn't happening (and probably won't).

I miss Al at the u... things were so nice then

a.) It's a positive for everyone's knees.

b.) Matt Rhule also managed to win at Temple, and has gone 6-17 at Baylor in two years.

Counterpoint: Matt Rhule has won 6 7 games at Baylor in the last 2 years, including 6 wins and a bowl berth this year, despite all the fallout from the sexual assault scandal a few years back.

Quick look at the last few Temple coaches.

Coach Tenure Record Next team Tenure Record
Al Golden 2006-2010 27-34 Miami 2011-2015 32-25
Steve Addazio 2011-2012 13-11 Boston College 2013-present 38-38
Matt Rhule 2013-2016 28-23 Baylor 2017-present 6-17
Geoff Collins 2017-2018 15-10 Georgia Tech starts in 2019 0-0

What I didn't realize about Addazio is that other than the 3-9 year where BC lost all 8 ACC games, he's had a 7-6 record at BC every year. This year, they are currently 7-5.

That Matt Rhule record is very deceiving. He took a team that was in a terrible off the field situation and short on players, tore the program down, and started building from scratch. He has completely changed their offense. He went 1-11 in year 1 and improved to 6-6 in the second year.

This is Virginia Tech, all we care about is year 3.

I was sure they were going to hire Wisenhunt (and I was ready to laugh at them pretty hard). This is a much stronger hire, maybe not the best on the market but he could do some good things there. We'll see.

I think Scott Saturfield, Neal Brown, and Geoff Collins are the three best possible coaching hires for the ACC/SEC footprint. Not good that two of them are coming to our conference, and one is in our division.

I hope Satterfield does well....I hear App on the radio and he sounds like a good dude..

Noting that Geoff Collins is a defensive guy. Who will be his OC?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

The Navy OC

Queue the Beamer Mic drop gif.

This just may be plaid worthy.

Paul Johnson. Cause why not?

It'd be nice if we beat them, once again. 3-straight Ls. And 3-straight Ls at Lane. OOF!

I'm glad they're not taking Army's Coach. Monken has got them playing very well

Was surprised he didnt get a call. He was at Georgia Southern for a bit and I think won 10 games there.

Of the four years he coached there, he won 10,11,10 games and his last year only 7. With one of those wins over Florida.

I thought Monken was the perfect fit for GT. I think they (GT) also thought he was, but probably realized he was pretty happy at Army, cause I really didn't hear his name talked about as a candidate for the numerous coaching vacancies. I'm glad he's not at GT, cause that probably would have resulted in their continued dominance over us with that damn triple option.

"That man was violating a city ordinance, and I was just doing my duty to enforce it." - Mike Curtis

Monken was never a consideration. GT forced PJ out because their admins and fans were sick and tired of the triple option.

Wonder if the new offense will be as effective passing as PJ's offense was?

Probably wouldn't be as efficient

I'll give the new guy the benefit of the doubt and say he can get above 13th in the ACC in passing efficiency in a short amount of time.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Anything/Anybody but the triple option. Anybody is better. CPJ was a master at it, you had to prepare uniquely for it 1 week per year, it gave Fuente some type of choke voodoo, and being in our division, CPJ saw learned how to attack the weaknesses in Bud's scheme. I'll take my chances with ANY other offensive staff at GT. This is great news for us.

For the first time in 11 years, GT has offered a TE.

The option is out my friends!

I guess they can promise TE's immediate playing time.

Do you think the fact that he spells his name GEOff instead of Jeff swayed GEOrgia Tech to hire him?

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

probably
