I was originally struggling with the 4th spot (Beamer, Foster, Vick, ?). I brain farted. As soon as Bruce came to mind, I didn't think there was anyone else that deserved it.
I guess a better question would be Mount Rushmore of each decade.

Coach Fuente needs more time to be included on a list like this; he has only been our coach for three years. In my opinion, he is a good coach and he may deserve to be included in the future, but for Mount Rushmore-esque (is there even such a word?) consideration, he must be more than a good coach, maybe even more than a great coach. He would have to have a monumental (pun intended) impact on the team, VT, and beyond.

Yes, I'm willing to give him some time, and if he doesn't get there, he doesn't get formed into the monument we're proposing to build. That was some serious optimism, mixed with some future accomplishment. You're right, he's not even close to there right now.

He's on my historically correct list, which was the same as your list.
I watched Vick more in the NFL than in college. He is absolutely one of my all-time favorite football players, but I was 6-8ish years old when Vick was at VT.

This is why having MV7 recruit for us matters less and less every year. We need Kam to get after it. He is our biggest name currently and it looks like he may have some free time on his hands

Vick should just bring Madden 2004 with him on the trail and challenge kids to play letting them be the Falcons. Madden 2004 Vick might be the most overpowered player in video games second only to Tecmo Bo.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Bigger than tecmo Bo. Ronnie Lott could take down Bo, roger Walter Payton could run out the entire quarter on one play. I almost did it with Roger Craig. Montana to Craig was the unstoppable play, even if the defense called it.
There was no way to stop Vick or any comparable player on offense.

I keep seeing this, & while the argument can certainly be made for it, I feel that it was the overall teams of '95 - '97 (Jan) that actually "put Tech on the map." I mean, they took us to our very 1st appearance in elite level (at the time they were called the Bowl Alliance Series, but basically the equivalent of BCS) bowls (actually winning 1 of them) to the Sugar & Orange. Now Vick certainly expanded & took us to the next level, but he (& even that team) certainly weren't the 1st to "put us on the map." That's jmop.

Without Michael Vick our program would be really different because we never make it to the National Championship Game.
That game brought us to the next level. Without Michael Vick we probably don't get into the ACC, have multiple 10 win seasons, and Lane Stadium never expands to what it is today.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
If you want to speculate on how much Vicks impact could have been.....Just think of how the program would be if he had stayed all 4 years. I have to conclude that it is most likely we land some very big State talent and we bypass the Grant Noel years
and I think we win more than 10 games in 2002 and beat #1 Miami.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Hell, we might have gone undefeated again if Vick wasn't hurt for Miami in 2000, right? Perhaps the overall feeling was that we weren't as good in 2000, but I was too young to vividly remember.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
In my mind the defense wasn't nearly as good, but Vick was a year older and I don't think we would have faced as tough of a challenge in the NC game that year. Pretty sure that years FSU team and the Oklahoma team that won it weren't as solid as the 99 FSU squad. Also not totally convinced we would have beaten Miami even with a healthy Vick that year.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It's hard to say what would have happened to the program without Michael Vick and making it to the national championship game, but it wouldn't have been as good.
Vick changed the trajectory of the program.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I agree with both of you. I'm just saying that in order for a player similar to Vick to even consider coming to Tech, we had to be on the map in the 1st place. Think I read somewhere that "it was players like Druck and the success of the '95 & '96 teams that helped pave the way for Vick to come to the program."
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
We actually weren't. MV7 was about to go to Syracuse to play under Kevin Rogers (QB Coach), and be the person who followed McNabb.
MV7, much like David Wilson, said he wanted to be his own man, to pave his own path, and stay closer to home in the last minute.
His success led to us being able to nab some great in-state talent, who would have otherwise left for bigger greener pastures. He made us a destination spot.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yes. I'm aware that he heavily considered selecting Syracuse, but if you say we weren't even on the map before Vick, well then I'd have to agree to disagree. I firmly believe the appearances in the Sugar & Orange bowls in the mid 90s legitimately put us on the college football map. Vick just expanded & took us to the next level.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Oh, absolutely! Undisputed. Of you'll check my more serious post further down, you'll see. I was merely making the point that the Hokies were already on the college football map before Vick got there (because of the success of the '95 & '96 teams).

Hunter Carpenter. We'll call him our Washington. Just our first person of significance. College Football hall of Famer.
Bruce. First First Pick. All time great. And I'll say first here for the last time.
Frank Beamer. Reshaped everything into something of significance.
Bud Foster. Beamer's reshaping is nothing without Bud.

Enrolled at VT in 1898, left and played for UNC for two years, came back to VT just to beat UVa and did (VT's first victory over UVa) Led VT to a 9-1 record, made it into the College Sports Hall of Fame.

2 Coaches? Beamer. Without question. Bruce. No doubt. Mike. He's the reason why we are having this conversation. 4th???? Wow! That is a tough one. Personally, I would vote for Corey Moore. But lets go with the old school player and martyr, Frank Loria.

Coach Beamer always and unequivocally mentions Cornell Brown as one of the key lynchpins in the early goings of VT football success. He should be on this list.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Came here to say this. While Bruce Smith is clearly the better player, I think Cornell Brown did more for the program. If your Mt. Rushmore is the 4 people who did the most for VT's program, I think you have to go Beamer, Foster, Brown, and Vick.

My personal Mt. Rushmore for players active for Tech while I was there (2003/4-2007/8) stands as:
Xavier Adibi
Vince Hall
Tyrod Taylor (3rd and 31/beating the Noles in Lane + the ACC championship game)
Eddie Royal

While your Mt Rushmore is correct, there would also need to be several hills in the foreground...DBU Knob with Kam, DHall, Jimmy Williams and Rouse or somebody; Fuller Ridge with the Fullers, Edmunds Rise, 911 Knoll for Hall, Adibi and Ben Taylor or somebody...and a freestanding sculpture of Corey Moore.

True. I guess I would need to replace Enter Sandman with a retired VT song - I guess 2001: A Space Odyssey would need to be on Mt Rushmore of Songs since we no longer have that song as our entrance.

Yes, and took away the gobble noise in the stadium. He didn't like the turkey mascot, so he started the changes that lead to the eventual evolution into Foghorn Leghorn. The current version came along after he was gone, but he set the wheels in motion.

Bill arguably moved the program forward in a short period of time.
VT went to three bowl games with Dooley as coach - as many as VT had been to in almost 100 years of football before him, and led VT to it's first bowl victory. More importantly, he set the program up to need Frank Beamer, and that turned out to be the real program changer, but he shined a light on the possibilities.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
True, but it's worth mentioning that Bill Dooley was the first coach to win a bowl game for VT, and got VT to three bowls. At that time, that was a non-trivial accomplishment.
In 1980, there were only 15 bowl games.
The College Football Hall of Fame looks pretty cool. Next time I'm in Atlanta, I'll try and visit.

For those who responded with "Who?" in reference to Frank Loria (like myself), he was an All-American DB at VT, has his jersey retired and in the college football HOF. Beamer said this about him:
Loria played safety in the same defensive backfield with Frank Beamer, former head coach at Virginia Tech. It is indicative of Loria's stature, as well as Beamer's humility, that when Frank Beamer was once asked if he ever thought about "what if" that plane had not crashed, that he replied to the effect that he thought it was quite possible that Loria might be the coach at Tech, and that he himself might be an assistant.
Loria became the DB coach for Marshall after leaving and subsequently passed away in plane crash.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Frank Loria was the one that was most well known on the Hokie defense while I was there. I remember a play where the opposing team was inside the five yard line. The running back got the ball, ran to the line planning on diving over the line to score. Frank Lori met him in mid-air and knocked him backwards preventing them from scoring. I think that won the game for us. It may have been the highlight play that got recognized as an All-American.

Would be hard to argue that, but I'd love it if Fuente makes it up there as a fifth person, as it would take a national championship to do that.

I have to admit that I did not read your post carefully. Having re-read it, I think you have it right. My apologies.
OP's list is the most objectively correct answer.
That said, my personal Mt. Rushmore would be Tyrod Taylor, Brandon Flowers, Bud Foster, and Frank Beamer.
Players only, personal list: Tyrod Taylor, Brandon Flowers, Xavier Adibi, and Ryan Williams.
WOW No MV7. He put us on the map.

Vick is still bigger than Kam
And that prob will never change. I love Kam, but MV7 is just a bigger force.
Kam is higher on the all time list at his position than MV is at his. Kam is way more recent.

The problem with these conversations is that Mt. Rushmore can't be changed. It should be a recognition of who built the program.
So yeah, OP's list is legit.
where's Dwayne Lawson?
Exactly.
I heard a rumor he may be transferring
Source?
Hunter Carpenter. We'll call him our Washington. Just our first person of significance. College Football hall of Famer.
Bruce. First First Pick. All time great. And I'll say first here for the last time.
Frank Beamer. Reshaped everything into something of significance.

Al Groh, Mike London, Bronco & CavMan falling off a horse
I see what you did there. That's the UVa Mount Rushmore, but it is sort of a tribute to our program if we need a second one.
2 Coaches? Beamer. Without question. Bruce. No doubt. Mike. He's the reason why we are having this conversation. 4th???? Wow! That is a tough one. Personally, I would vote for Corey Moore. But lets go with the old school player and martyr, Frank Loria.

Who's on the left? One of the Fullers?
Yep, Kyle.
It's so beautiful
Once you get past Kyle Fuller, everyone else's gaze on that mountain is liable to scare the &$%#$ out of you.
yeah. it needs the Post-GT Frank Face and not the Hello Darkness My Old Friend Frank Face
Hmm. My list: Bryan Stinespring, Curt Newsome, Sean Glennon & Marcus Vick.
Honorable mentions: Mike O'Cain, Scot Loeffler & Brad Cornelsen.
Special mention: AD Jim Weaver
Thanks, I hate it.
Lots of Offensive Coordinators on that list... There's no love lost. How about Cody Journell as a 2nd special mention?
Fun fact, my college friend got headbutted by Cody Journell at a bar DT Blacksburg
Completely unsurprising.
On second thought, should Mama Fuller be on there somewhere?
That would be Mount Fuller. They could probably have their own.
FTFY
If we're looking for a legit all time list, there's no way Hunter Carpenter doesn't make our Rushmore. Also Frank Loria.
/s
came here for loria
Hunter Carpenter, Frank Loria, Frank Beamer, Bud Foster
Mount Rushmore of special teams...
Shayne Graham, Caleb Hurd, Brent Bowden, Deangelo Hall, and many many others.
My personal Mt. Rushmore for players active for Tech while I was there (2003/4-2007/8) stands as:
Xavier Adibi
Vince Hall
Tyrod Taylor (3rd and 31/beating the Noles in Lane + the ACC championship game)
Eddie Royal
Hunter Ovens, Drew Harris, Todd Nolen, Pep Hamilton.
MV7, CFB, CBF, Bruce, Corey Moore.
Looks like I've left a spot open. You know who's always open...?
EDIT: Kyle Fuller.
Danny Coles?
I'll take A.J. Hughes...
And three Wayne Wards.
I guess Frank Beamer can be on there too, but he's a bit of a softy.
Wow, hell of a dick punch right there by Hughes.
Savage.
It's the old "knock 2 balls loose, get one ball loose free" deal. A.J. is a coupon clipper from way back.
That first pic just reminded me how many slick uni's the U got from Nike. IMO, the Adidas ones are atrocious; they all look like lizards.

My four: Fuente, QP, Tre Turner, and Dax, because they're the ones that will win VT our first National Championship in a few years.
Leg for optimism
Mama Fuller, Mama Edmundi, Bud Foster and Bruce Smith
A tougher one might be VT RB/FB:
Ru, KJ, Rogers, Suggs
But I also love Brandon Ore, and DW was the ACCPOY for God's sake.
Rogers as in Sam? Over a first round draft pick?
Yes, because sometimes it's the intangibles.
Rogers is an all-time Hokie and would basically do anything you asked him to on the field. But as a pure FB, I would probably put Jarrett Ferguson over him there.
Beamer, Vick, Bruce, and Frank Loria
The opening show, or the mini version while walking up to the big one, would be Cyrus Lawrence, Jim Pyne, Corey Moore, and Carroll Dale
vtnerf- i like your picks- gotta have Bruce on the list if you are going to talk VT football- if you haven't seen 2 OL trying to block him on every play, you haven't seen defensive tackle play at VT. Fast ,strong and unblockable.
The Goodbye Song, Stick It In Stick It In Stick It In, The Hokie Pokie, Enter Sandman
Those are the Grammys
True. I guess I would need to replace Enter Sandman with a retired VT song - I guess 2001: A Space Odyssey would need to be on Mt Rushmore of Songs since we no longer have that song as our entrance.
Dustin Pickle, Cody Grimm, Sam Rogers, Willie Byrn and John Engelberger if I get a fifth and Jack Tyler if I get a sixth
What? No Brandon Semones? No Jake Houseright?
Without looking at anyone else's answer I will say Frank Beamer, Bud, Michael Vick, and Whit Babcock if Fuente really does take us to the "next step".
Surprised nobody has tossed out Arians, Strock, or Freeman...
Beamer, Vick, Cornell Brown, Bruce Smith
I'd replace Cornell Brown with Bud Foster, but feels like that's the only name on the list that's debatable. Beamer, Bruce and Vick have to be there.
I'd do an all players:
Bruce, Mike, Corey and Druck
Edward Hudson Lane, Lunch Pail, Bill Dooley, Frank Beamer
Bill got us in trouble, no?
Yes, and took away the gobble noise in the stadium. He didn't like the turkey mascot, so he started the changes that lead to the eventual evolution into Foghorn Leghorn. The current version came along after he was gone, but he set the wheels in motion.
Bill arguably moved the program forward in a short period of time.

More importantly, he set the program up to need Frank Beamer, and that turned out to be the real program changer, but he shined a light on the possibilities.
I recommend making a trip to the College Football Hall of Fame.
There are many coached in there that had a cup of tea as a head coach of Tech and had a successful career with us and moved onto greener pastures.
Frank was the first one to make Tech a place where you could have longevity as a coach, not the first one to win there.
He also recruited Bruce Smith...
I watched the 2002 LSU/vt game on you tube last night. Maybe Billy hite should be up there. Lee suggs, Kevin Jones and cedric humes all on one team. And damn we ran the ball downhill and with anger! Coach Hite is a Tech legend and a guy that never gets enough recognition. Love that guy.
Funny you say this. He played for UNC, and when we would travel there they have the names of their Hall of Fame Football Players on display under the press box.

LOL
Coach was a bad ass RB back in his day. His favorite wins were one over UNC ironically.
He was by far my favorite offensive coach that I dealt with.
Every player to go undefeated against UVA in their careers but Earth only has so many mountains.
Michael Vick, Bruce Smith, Frank Loria, Frank Beamer
For those who responded with "Who?" in reference to Frank Loria (like myself), he was an All-American DB at VT, has his jersey retired and in the college football HOF. Beamer said this about him:
Loria became the DB coach for Marshall after leaving and subsequently passed away in plane crash.

I think that won the game for us. It may have been the highlight play that got recognized as an All-American.
At the end of the day, I'd ultimately have to conclude: Beamer, Foster, Smith & Vick(7)
I'll give an honorable mention to: Loria, Mama Fuller & Brown.
And Corey Moore
My list: Vick, Beamer, Smith, Taylor
I know Tyrod is controversial but his 4yrs are some of the greatest in Tech history. And we dominated Miami and FSU....hell, the ACC...
Corey Moore, bulging eyes, complete with steaming head, and "Welcome to the Terrordome" audio!
