Bring Shane Beamer back to Blacksburg.

Convince me I'm wrong. And could we juggle spots on the staff to make a position? Who could be replaced? Can we afford to pay him, semi-jokingly but he works at UGA correct?

Wow. I can't fathom the timing of this post and asking if he works at UGA.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Just heard his name mentioned during the game in reference to Franks induction. Wasn't following his career closely but knew he was on the rise

The irony of it all.

He works for OU right now

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Wakeyleaks.

"Exit light..."

That seems trivial all things considered

Oh, so you're saying he's going to coach at UNC then?

Bruh.

That being said, I'm rooting for him to get the OC job at BC. Hopefully, Lefty liked him enough to recommend him to Addiazo.

I'd be cool with him coming back eventually.

Eventually but only as a head coach.

But I think I would prefer TGray as HC over Shane, all qualifications being equal.

Shane has a ton of big game and big program experience now. He's gone up against Bama in the playoffs and come just short two years in a row now. He comes home to VT, hellbent to lead us to glory and take down Bama. We can only dream.

I would love Shane back in Blacksburg, but the time isn't quite now. He's going to have an HC job soon, and it won't be open at VT for a while. Plus I don't know how it would work for Fu to have the son of his predecessor on the staff.

I'm pretty sure working for Spurrier and Fulmer count as big program experience, he had that before he came to VT.

I think Shane is will go the Dabo route and never be a coordinator. I think he would make a great HC. Ideally he gets a HC job soon so he can be read for when Gary Patterson Retires.

Are you implying he goes to TCU or that Fuente goes to TCU and Shane comes here?

Always choose joy.

No thanks

I thought he did a good job managing the game against Cincinnati when he stepped in for Frank a few years ago. He was a little wild on the sideline jumping on Stroman's back after the fumble recovery, but I was impressed nonetheless. The Wakey Leaks incident is still a concern to me, although I'm still more concerned how we scored zero fucking points in regulation. Like previously mentioned though, he has big time college experience now. He knows how these schools recruit. He knows how they handle big games. He's also the son of the most famous man in the history of Virginia Tech.

According to him, he did not share that information with the rest of the staff. We'll probably never know for sure how true that is.

He probably thought it was a joke and threw the binder away.

Why does every armchair AD here hate him when top tier programs like Georgia and Oklahoma see value in him? 🤔

I wouldn't mind seeing Shane back at Tech at a later time if the opportunity presents itself. That being said, he wasn't as successful for us as he had been at other schools. We had a string of elite running backs before he was our RB coach with David Wilson's last year being Shane's first, if I'm remembering correctly, which means it's felt like we had a sudden drop off at the position that we never recovered from. I personally don't think it's mostly Shane's fault, but the fans don't see what goes on behind the scenes 99% of the time, they just see the results.

He's coached in the playoffs the last 2 years for different schools. Maybe the issue isn't with Shane but with VT.

That has more to do with Billy Hite's retirement than anything, I suspect.

No matter how good Shane is, replacing Billy Hite is a tough job.

Totally, as I kind of alluded to, I don't personally put it on Shane, but the results of what happened here for him wasn't a good look for most fans.

My theory is that losing billy hite is what really led to our down tick in 2012 and beyond, not an aging Beamer. I think he played a way way bigger role in coaching than he ever got credit for.

RB recruiting certainly took a hit.

30 years after starting grad school at Virginia Tech, I finally defended my dissertation and earned my PhD.
Don't give up on your dreams.

Have we replaced Shane with someone better or even close to Hite? I don't think so. I think it's gone even farther downhill. Not to mention Trey Edmunds was an NFL talent who suffered from injuries and we made McMillian into a 1000 yard rusher before we broke him and chased him out of town

Free Hugh

its not that we didn't replace someone close to hite as a coach. its that we replaced a RB coach with a special teams coach/assistant head coach and a WRs coach. burden and shane are both equally good coaches on or close to hites level of coaching but were not equally good RB coaches.

As others have mentioned, I see it as more about evaluating talent/landing great RB's. Every year there are 3* and 2* backs, on G5 teams that are "wow". Heck, the Bama RB that abused OU was a 3* (who knew that Saban would lower his standards to offer a 3*). We had DW, RFMW and Shai as highly regarded recruits. Branden Ore and Darren Evans were 3*'s who played above their rating. The last really good RB that we've had was Edmunds, who was recruited as a LB.

Am I missing the /s for this post? No Thank you! He certainly underwhelmed in his time at Tech. Im not going to get to deep into all the instances about Shane, but I know some of us remember his sideline antics at UVA. Our run game vastly got worse when Billy Hite retired when Shane took over the RBs. He also didnt recruit very well in RVA. Yeah no thanks

Pour some Beer on it

Great coaches with nearly unlimited options continue to hire him and yet the majority of the hokie faithful thinks he is a horrible coach. Makes no sense to me?

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

I wouldn't mind if he came back in the future, but the consensus around here four years ago was that the running back rotation everyone hated was his fault and that he couldn't win any recruiting battles in Richmond.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

And yet, supposedly better football minds than his use a rb rotation with varying levels of success.

I am not a fan of the rotation when you have a hot hand. But I do agree there are good arguments for one. And I would argue the problem with the running game has between primarily the fault of a decade of crappy O line play.

You're definitely not wrong. A lot of folks were grasping for answers to why we couldn't run the ball.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I would point the finger and Curt Newsome before looking to Shane as the reason.

I am not sure it was a consensus. There was obviously at least a vocal minority, but hard to tell how many people disagreed without starting an internet fight over it, as I do think almost all agreed he had to go because I'd the coaching change/relationship, but that is different than a consensus he could not coach.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

All of that is to ignore his success at UGA and Oklahoma. It's almost as if people can learn and get better at their job with more experience?!

Stop making sense now, dammit!

If Fuente wants to bring him back in some capacity, I'm OK with it.

He'd need to prove himself as a head coach somewhere else before he could apply for that position at VT.

@Hokierick - how about you do the required research and convince us this would be a good move?

  1. I'd recommend first establishing coaching positions of need on our staff (AKA, who should be fired) - there's plenty of posts on this site that talk about that.
  2. Next, I'd recommend looking at his coaching history, and determining if he can fill a position of need - I think his wikipedia is a fine place to view his coaching history.
  3. Finally, do some research to see if we can afford to hire him. Here's an article detailing coaching salaries - this is a good start to understanding school's staffing budgets.

Do you think he'd be an effective, affordable upgrade over one of our current staff members?

It was pure wishful thinking given his pedigree and success since leaving Tech. I'm sure we could shuffle some positions on the staff and come up with a good place for him and I'm sure we could find the money to pay him. But it won't happen

I'm sure we could shuffle some positions on the staff and come up with a good place for him

what specific positions do you have in mind to shuffle

I don't know that I would want to go into a great deal of specifics, but for starters Burden is coaching RBs but could be coaching receivers.

I'm not sure Shane would come back as anything but a coordinator, and I'm not ready for those changes yet.

Regarding future HC:
KEEP FUENTE!!!! But once he's gone...
I love the T-Gray idea that was mentioned.
I'm curious if Nick Sorensen would ever want to come back (pretty long stint on Seattle's coaching staff at this point).
Sam Rogers!!! If that guy isn't VT's head football coach someday, something is very wrong.

GO HOKIES!!!

Sam Rogers would be awesome. Who wouldn't want to ru. Through a brick wall for a guy like that?

Pour some Beer on it

I don't know anyone who wouldn't want to RU

Speaking of missing out on coaches. Rich Rod just got picked up by Ole Miss to be their OC. ....its a shame we couldn't get him onboard, right?

Y'all know I ain't serious

Following a legendary head coach is one of the hardest things to do as a head coach. I think having said head coach's son on the staff would only add to the difficulty. Let Fuente do his thing and maybe Shane comes back eventually.

Nah, no boxing gloves on sticks por favor

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

The real question for me would be about the Jimmys and Joes, not the Xs and Os. Yes he's been at some big schools recently, but how easy is it to look good when you have Chubb and Michel and Murray and Sermon... I hope you get the point. In case anyone missed the recruiting threads, it's not like we have a bunch of 4 and 5* RBs on our roster already. If Shane were to come back, he'd have to be able to recruit that talent to VT. That's a lot harder than OU, UGA, or most of the SEC schools he's been at. Let's face it. Our athletic department doesn't have anywhere near the funds to play ball with the big boys on a consistent basis.

Before CFB retired I thought that a decade or two down the line Shane would be the #PrinceThatWasPromised that would take us back to glory. While I don't feel that way anymore I'd like him back here at some point, though that point has not yet arrived.

Edit: UNLESS he's got a plan to bring in a big name or well known up and coming offensive coordinator. Really would want to see him handle being HC at another program first too.

Gobble Till You Wobble

I think Fuente should keep Shane away. Rumors were that HS coaches view him as a daddy's boy who was arrogant. I know he has landed some highly ranked recruits but he didn't while here. Let him prove himself as a HC elsewhere then down the road after FU leaves/retires then Shane can come in as HC if he has been successful.

1-0 every week

^ This. "Rumors were that HS coaches view him as a daddy's boy who was arrogant."

They ain't just rumors bro.

Yet bigger programs like UGA and Oklahoma go out and hire the arrogant daddy's boy, and he recruits top talent there? Please. I'm so sick of hearing the ridiculous reasons why prima donna VA recruits won't come to Tech other than they just think they're bigger than VT.

Really? UGa and OK basically recruit themselves. UGa recruited top classes before Shane showed up and will long after his tenure. He's only been at OK for one season, so it is hard to use that as an example of his recruiting acumen.

We don't need to project what Shane would be like as a recruiter for VT, because he already had a shot at it and the results were less than advertised. The anecdote of him alienating HS coaches isn't trivial, nor should it be ignored.

I think he is a good special teams or position coach with a good resume for that level of position, not for a P5 head coaching gig.

I have a hard time believing that VT fans would be clamoring for him to come to VT as a head coach if he had a different last name.

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

You think UGA and OU are going to pay someone to go out on the trail with no cred, who apparently is just arrogant and a daddy's boy? Sounds like a handful of in state coaches with an axe to grind against VT as usual. The excuses get more and more lame by the day.

Maybe but it's not like those coaches have changed their mind in the past 4 years.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

It's just anti-VT bias in VA. I will say that I rarely if ever think nepotism works out in football (or anywhere really), but it's not like Shane was just handed a job at VT. He had proven himself at Miss St and USCe under Spurrier, recruiting all time great players for them like Alshon Jeffry, Marcus Lattimore, and Stephon Gilmore. Suddenly when he's working for his dad and trying to sell VT, he's arrogant and has no place being there? That just seems like a complete load of BS, whether or not those coaches opinions have changed.

This is just basic human nature. In Va he will always and forever be Frank's son. To succeed on his own the last place he needs to be is VT. He will never be able to be out of his Dad's shadow and whether he is arrogant or not, he will be perceived as such.

I don't think Shane coming back is anything short of the worst idea ever and won't do anything for recruiting that's positive. Recruiting at Vt realistically requires at least 1 of 2 key things. 1 is selling a brand and sticking with it - we are doing that and working to build that with consistency. 2 is having someone who is a dynamic personality. I mean that rare person who can sell anything - think Jimmy V personality. That would be hard to come by for VT so my vote is stick with the plan and build.

The coaches that recruit above their school's level always have that kind of personality. This is why Fuente will likely never recruit above our level. His personality is lacking. I'm not saying he is a bad recruiter, just an average one. I don't see us landing recruits that we aren't supposed to land.

I mean OU seems to like hiring D-coordinators that can't tie their own shoes. People keep saying that schools like that automatically only hire the best people, so if you work there you must be good.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Haven't had a good one since Venables.

Don't give up on your dreams.

He wasn't particularly special there either.

I wont get into any details here, but I do help coach high school football and towards the end of the Beamer era there was a growing disdain for the staff in the state of Va.

Is coronavirus over yet?

How is it now?

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

I'm pretty drunk and quite certain this is a very stupid idea but I dream of a day in the not so far future where Fuente is ceo Shane runs the O and Gray runs D. The result? We never lose another game ever again.

No, thank you.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Fuente will never hire him. But having said that, Shane is s well respected coach and recruiter. He will have a fine career moving forward. The issue at VT was his last name hanging over the head of the new coach and him wanting VT to be run like "an SEC program", which didn't jive with the rest of the staff. His return to VT won't be with the current staff if it ever happens.
