A lot of us know there is always a demand for Duke students to get their hands on basketball tickets for home game. Little did a lot of us know how high that demand is really is....
They have to take a test just to have a chance to be in line for tickets.
As a result, over 1,800 students (which the Chronicle points out is more than 25% of the school's undergraduate population) took the test on Thursday night.
If you score high enough, then you have to take another test to determine where in line they will be. Only 840 of the 1.800 get selected for tickets.

That's pretty intense but it's mostly trivial stuff. Who really remembers who scored the most vs a team a how many they had in a random non-conference game.
You know they're all just looking it up on the internet.
But you do need to jump through the hoops, so to speak.
Much more likely to weed out people that'll go just to say they did, leave early, and contribute little to the atmosphere though.
Exactly, they're all just googling the heck out of it. I guess the point is that instead of a lottery, make it difficult enough that you identify the students that absolutely want to be there the most.
VT should do this for the better student seats, ie NEZ.

I think it would be a decent replacement without going back to the "camp out for 2 weeks to wait in line for tickets" way to get the most dedicated of fans.
Really, what I got out of that is that there are only 840 tickets available for students. That is a low amount for their enrollment.

Cameron: 9,314
Cassell: 9,847
Cameron Indoor is a tiny arena, and they probably want to maximize the revenue they can get from paying attendees.
I really wish the basketball team was this good when I lived in Pritchard. The idea of casually walking over to the game (if you had a ticket) from Pritchard after a little pregame sounds amazing for a packed arena. I mean sure we went back then but it was not the same.

I LOVE this idea. It kind of bothers me how people at VT who don't care about basketball and only go to the UVA and/or Duke games can get a lottery ticket ahead of people who want to go to all of them. Personally, I buy the student season tickets since it's a good value so it doesn't really affect me. But I know a big basketball fan who last year played the lottery a half dozen times and didn't win once. IMO if they want the lottery so bad, your odds should go up the more you enter because that shows that you actually care.
I am pretty sure the 840 number noted above is incorrect in terms of student capacity at Cameron. Maybe that's how many tickets/cards get allocated from this test but the lower part of Cameron that the students occupy is way more than 840. It's closer to 2,000-2,200 (1200 undergrad on tv side/800 grad in endzones) though since it's standing they can pack in more if the fire marshal looks the other way.
