Hoping a few folks on here may have contacts still at VT they could refer me to... I work for Credit Suisse down here in Raleigh, which is expanding it's footprint in RTP... Including roles in Finance, Compliance, Risk Management and Modeling, IT, etc. I am a hiring manager (in the Finance/Accounting area) and know others across the bank who are or will be hiring. I am not a recruiter or HR employee.
I'd like to atleast kick the tires on an informal recruiting program for upcoming VT grads for opportunities in Raleigh, but am not sure who I can reach out to at the University to discuss possibilities. In contrast, there are somewhat more formal programs in place at the local universities.
Also interested in connecting to VT alumni in the area who'd be interested in looking at available roles here, though I envision that being more of a LinkedIn model.

As a recruiter, I do this across the country for my company is places like Dallas, Seattle, Atlanta, Chicago to name a few. Best thing to do is just shoot an email much like you did here expressing who you are and what you are looking for and the right person will reach out. I met with University of Washington's career services center a couple weeks back. I set up meetings in person when I can for that personal touch and I have found they are much more likely to waive posting costs, include you in smaller career fairs etc.

I would take one of your HR/Recruiters reps with you so that you can avoid some of the requests about updating postings etc. The services people will tell you the best way to go about reaching out. Every school is different, but they will start funneling resumes to you almost immediately.
If you are looking to keep HR people out of it to collect on referral bonuses (no judgement here) I would suggest joining LinkedIn groups and suggesting in person Happy Hours, golf weekends, etc once you have met some people in the group. We once bought out a box at Nats park and invited 80-100 of the top industry people and had them RSVP with interest. We spent a couple of grand to throw what turned out to be the best social networking event I've ever been to.
I think the only issue you would run into would be the "informal" piece to what you said above. The University usually wants some type of monetary commitment for them to allocate their resources to it. That being said, even just reaching out through LinkedIn to current students in VT Acocounting/Finance/IT grads and introducing yourself and then throwing a name like Credit Suisse would catch most people's attention.

I'm in the Fayetteville area and not a "recent" grad but would like the connection as I look to translation from the military in the next few years if that's not eons out.

Would it be helpful to have a running thread on TKP where people could post job opportunities? I am kind of in the same boat with needing to hire people, but not officially an HR person or recruiter. Of course I always like giving Hokies (especially new grads) an opportunity.

Not sure about guidelines, but yes this would be helpful. We have had a lot of opportunities for engineers/project managers in the Harrisonburg area, but I wasn't sure if it was OK to post.

When you're not getting laid off due to a market downturn, Credit Suisse is an ok company to work for.

Sorry to hear of the salt-inducing experience... I've had several of my own across a few different organizations.
Corporate America (or Corporate Switzerland in this case) will get after ya.
I'd suggest dropping an e-mail to the department head for whatever field of study you're looking to recruit. I can't speak for the business school, but in the engineering school, the various departments were always very active on keeping the job placement numbers high. If you talk to that person, they will certainly point you in the right direction and get you connected with the right people.
Any civil engineers out there want to get their start or maybe 2nd job in the greater Charlotte area? Reply and I'll get you the details.
Not sure about upcoming grads but as far as alumni in the Triangle area you can reach out to the alumni association's Triangle chapter. In the past we've done some networking events and it would be a good thing to start back up. I'm not as involved as I used to be but if you email trianglehokies @ gmail I'm still on the account and can make sure it ends up in the right hands.
