I thought this we be a fun thread cause I have a pretty good story. So I've been playing Ncaa football 05 on the ps2 lately and of course I'm doing a Virginia Tech Dynasty. Well I just finished the 1st season and I have made it to the national championship game. As the 3rd rank team in the nation. You might be thinking who got snubbed as the number 2 team in the country is. Well it was poor ole southern missπ π π π

Jak and Dax will always hold a special place in my heart.
Edit: also, NASCAR 2001. Always made me laugh that Jimmy Spencers car appeared to be a tiiick wider than the others.
Double Edit: Skateboarding featuring Andy MacDonald...my sister and I played the hell out of that together. And (I know, only 15yrs old) but Allstar Baseball 2004 was pretty damn amazing. I'd go back and play the pickup game mode in a heartbeat.
I always seen commercials on that series I just never got the game
Jack Click and Dax Hollifield?
Or did you mean Daxter?
Damnit. Yes lol
Funny you mentioning NASCAR Video Games. My favorite that I still play was NASCAR Thunder 2003, and that's on Gamecube. But the original NASCAR Racing for PC might be the most memorable, and playing with the keyboard only was something else.
We had 97 or 98...back when NHMS was still Loudon and Sonoma was still Sears Point lol
I forget what version, but I won the national title as the #2 team. I have a picture some where. I dont know how I wasnt ranked #1 after the game.
They probably had a lot of quality wins to keep them number 1#π
If anyone is into classic games and has a mac, I cannot recommend OpenEmu enough. It's easier to use and more organized than any other emulator I've used and it can run almost any classic system.
I liked it enough to donate for something free, not dissimilar to TKP.
OpenEmu is awesome! I really wish there was a windows version. I've also built a RetroPie system and have loaded at least 100 SNES and NES games on to it. I bought a few 8BitDo bluetooth SNES controllers and have been having a blast reliving my childhood favorites.
Yeah I really hope a windows version is in the works. And I've never built a pie system but it sounds like its a great solution.
I have a retro pie with close to 1500 games. Its fun and overwhelming at the same time. I just don't have time for FF6 all over again.
Where is a good, safe place to download the roms?
That I don't know, I got them from a friend that spent a lot of time figuring that out.
Emuparadise was the best option, but they recently disabled all of their download links. There's a workaround to get them from Emuparadise still, which is probably the "safest" bet, but sharing such a thing here may be a violation of site TOS.
Remember, Google is your friend.
Blades of Steel.
YES
I've been replaying Final Fantasy VII recently for the first time since middle school. It is still such a good game. The replay has made me look forward to the remake even more, assuming it ever actually comes out.
FF7 is maybe the Switch port I'm looking forward to the most. Being able to play that game on the go is going to be amazing.
Lords of Magic and Backyard Soccer were pretty much all I played as a kid.
Then came the SSX Tricky years oh my.
Almost positive I played the story on CoD 1 on PC at least 20 times
I've played Streets of Rage 2 more than once since I've bought it on Steam. I love that game.
Streets of Rage 2 was super dope. Who is your go to character?
I'm a Max guy. Gotta love the atomic bomb drop. They're coming out with Streets of Rage 4 not long from now.
Streets of Rage 4?!?! That's awesome. I had not heard about it until this exact moment. I shall have to investigate.
I spent way too much time playing Oregon Trail and Sims Park growing up.
Which version of the Oregon trail did you play?
I played versions 1.2 and OT II
The entire Mass Effect trilogy. I have more hours spent in those games than I want to think about.

I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite comment on the Citadel
I download Nethack every once in a while
I beat it once, but nobody believes me.
Warcraft 2, Starcraft, Starcraft: Brood War (I miss when Blizzard had a small amount of parody in those two franchises and less serious then they are now). C&C Red Alert 2. Donkey Kong Country trilogy.
EDIT: Forgot one game MechWarrior. Been playing MechWarrior Online lately (partly to play with my brother).
Oh man, you play MWO? I've been playing since beta. What's your in-game name?
Mastoden, don't know how much I'll be playing because trying to join a group for ARMA 3 with the Warhammer 40K Mod "Only War" and that might be some time commitment and on weekends might have some tabletop 40K games , it might be mostly weeknights.
I'll add you and see if you pop up anytime when I'm on. To be fair I don't play that often anymore either, I used to play competitively and I just can't keep up with that anymore.
NCAA Football (any), Star Wars: Dark Forces and Jedi Knight series, Quest For Glory
Earthworm Jim!!
I loved that game, but it was also the game I was playing when my SNES finally died, so it's bittersweet
My brother and I still try to play this game every year at Thanksgiving. This and Madden 95 on the SNES.
Man that game was tough. I still have nightmares about the level with the "dog" that goes berserk if it gets hit.
This and Battletoads were the hardest games I remember playing. My introduction to rage quitting came in the Battletoads "wall dodging" level. That and JRPGs with boss battles that lasted 45 minutes only to die and have to start all over again...
your idea of a classic video game came out halfway through my college career. My idea of a classic video game is one that came out the year I was born...sigh
I was gonna say, a football game from 2004 is a "classic", both in time since release as well as, y'know, its ability to stand out from among its peers? I mean, NCAA 14 has potential a decade or two from now, since that's the last one and best one they ever made, but I dunno.
Tetris is a classic. Super Mario World is a classic. Goldeneye is a classic. NFL Quarterback Club '99 is not.
There's nothing wrong with NFL quarterback club 99
Lol, I never said there was anything wrong with it. I actually have fond memories of the game, and as a kid I was infinitely amused that one time I used (Lee) Flowers to tackle (Roosevelt) Potts.
However, "classic" is not the word I'd use to describe it or the vast majority of other annual sports games of the era.
They didn't have video games the year I was born. :(
I still go back to the NCAA games more than I'd like to admit. The NCAA basketball games were fun as hell, too. I'll also end up replaying a Final Fantasy game once a year or so (last year's replay was IX.). I still love bioware games, but the thought of calling them "classic" just makes me feel old.
Oh, and Braid. Because it's awesome and still holds up well today.
Eh, I would call KOTOR a classic. But yeah, the Mass Effect series, or Dragon Age? Not so fast.
I have replayed many a FF game. IX is one of my favorites. Probably a close third behind X and VI.
So back in the day I didn't really hold IX in that high regard. Yeah I liked it but to me it was just something to tide me over until FFX, which I loved. A few years ago I replayed IX and X and to me IX held up much, much better than X did. FFX was my jam at the time it came out, but it was really hard for me to replay the remastered edition now.
For now, I think I'm around: VII, VI, IX, XV, X, XII, a satisfying dump, VIII
Retropie for daysssss! Everytime I think of a game I used to play I go down load it
Turtles in Time is the greatest video game of all time
Also a friend of mine had a still shrink-wrapped N64 in his attic and he gave it to me for Christmas. GoldenEye on a fresh authentic N64 controller brings back some great memories.
You... you cracked open a sealed N64? Just so you could play it? You probably could have sold it on Ebay and bought 10 to 20 used ones with the proceeds.
Naw man they aren't worth as much as you may think as they age. You are running the risk of capacitors going bad and having a box of crap that doesn't work. There was no point not to enjoy it.
I suppose my surface scan of Ebay wasn't quite accurate, but it still looks like new-in-box N64s go for about $300-$350, and you can buy them used for about $50.
In any case, glad you're enjoying it. We plug my wife's old N64 in every once in a while for some Mario Kart or Yoshi's Story, and I still pull the NES out of the closet once or twice a year for some SMB3.
Hopefully you got some 4-way split screen multiplayer going. Slappers only of course.
Proximity mines, complex ... my friends will never play this with me any more.
Proximity mines in the complex was one of my favorite map/weapon combos. It was maddening (not slappers level maddening) yet fun.
Turtles in Time was the first game I ever beat. True classic.
Contra
Super Techmo Bowl
Double Dragon II
Any Zelda game
Any game that had 2 player coop+not a school night+Doritos & a 2 liter
I'm old
I still mindlessly hum the tune from Sky Shark sometimes. Other favorites from NES include Heavy Barrel and P.O.W. Also Primal Rage is the coolest fighting game ever, don't @ me. More recently I'd go Croc, NFL Street 2 and 3. I could go on and on haha
So if I wanted to by the most recent NCAA would I need to buy a 360 and then the game as well and upload the most current rosters?
A 360 or a PS3, yes.
Sid Meiers Civilization IV - Warlords is my all-time time waster. If you want to go waaaaaaay back, I used to play Empire literally all night, then go to work, and start playing as soon as I got home
Rockstar Games still hasn't matched the wonderfulness that was GTA: San Andreas.
For the PC, the best game I ever played is a relatively unknown (in the US at least, it seems) MMORPG called Lineage II. That games was pure art, and it sucked up about 5 years of my life.
We played GTA3 heavily back in the day then I didn't really play any of VC or 4...then 5 dropped and I played that shit religiously in college.
"ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS FOLLOW THE DAMN TRAIN CJ"
Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye 64.
classic has to be 25 yrs or older?
10 years or older
I think it depends on how old you are, and the genre/style of game. For me, there are a handful of early 00's games that might qualify, but that's pushing it, and you'd have to go back to the N64/PS1 era or further to really find what I'd consider "classics"
For me it had to be Star Fox 64. Great story line. Fun combat crafts. And (IMOP) the best video game score EVER (just listen to the GLORIOUS finale and end credits music). SPOILER ALERT:
Half-Life
Madden 94 I believe on Sega. You could run an RB Option pass, and then outrun the entire defense every time!
Loved some NBA and NFL Street.
Resident Evil 2 anyone? The new release looks awesome.
Seconded.
Third
It is, indeed, awesome. Let me verify.
Just nab the number #1 recruiting class in the country with 2 5* 11 4* 1 3* and 1 2*
Zelda 1
Darklands
Jagged Alliance 2
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Uplink
When I get a chance the retro pie sees:
Goldeneye
Link to the past
final fantasy 3/6
Tecmo bowl, 1st person San Francisco is unstoppable, ronnie lott for the Ints
NBA jam, he's on fire
WWF royal rumble
contra- for when I forget that video games used to be hard and I need to try
TECMO Bowl with Randall Cunningham & Bo Jackson
Double Dribble with the Corner 3 shot
NCAA 2005 is "classic?" F I am old.
80s:
Bases Loaded
Gradius
Super Tecmo Bowl
Blades of Steel
1943
The hardest? Ghosts and Goblins (which was awesome) or Friday the 13th (which was just a terrible and impossible game)
Sega: Bill Walsh College Football
College and PS1- The 1997 College Football was amazing. I loved picking teams with good fullbacks and while everyone else would throw the ball, I would 3 yards and cloud of dust them and control the clock, then pop a little play action in there.
ALL EA SPORTS HOCKEY GAMES, but 1995 NHL Hockey on the Sega was amazing. Playing as my 1994 Rangers... spectacular.
I will add a shout out for NBA Jam. Plus, the EA sports NBA game circa around 1998. Arvydas Sabonis and French = unstoppable.
Friday the 13th was ridiculous. Every time Jason showed up you died. It just seemed like a pointless game but for some reason you'd get bored every month or so and you'd try to beat it. I hated running around that map fighting zombies or whatever the hell they were.
Worst video game ever, although some of the wrasslin video games were pretty awful
Not even remotely close to the worst video game ever. It's actually a pretty good idea for a game, just not executed the best.
Friday the 13th NES might as well be Grand Theft Auto compared to Hong Kong '97, Atari Pac-Man, Shaq-Fu, Big Rigs, or Superman 64.
Ha, I totally forgot Shaq-Fu was a thing. In looking it up just now I learned that a sequel was crowd sourced and released this past June.
reading this thread reminds me of the ROMs I have loaded on the media PC that have been dormant for far too long. Can't wait til my kids are old enough to play through some classics with me so I can do it and still call it "quality time."
My friend up the street had a Sega Dreamcast back in the day. We'd play Crazy Taxi, Hydro Thunder, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, NBA2K, NFL Street with MV7, some Sonic the Hedgehog games.....lots of fun.
I didn't have a lot of games myself, I sort of topped out at Game Boy Color with one edition of Pokemon and Super Mario. But I did rock a Mac Arcade Pak circa 1997.
Dreamcast had some real gems. Soul Caliber was an excellent game on that system.
Dreamcast was a fantastic system that had a tragically short run. To this day the 2K sports series on Dreamcast are among my favorite sports titles ever. Had a bunch of good original games (Shenmue!!!) as well as some high quality arcade ports (House of the Dead & Silent Scope in particular).
Any crash bandicoot game
Tiger Woods 04/05
NHL 01 on CD
and I'll say it... Agent under Fire is way better than goldeneye, even with the nostalgia factored in
I played Tiger 05 quite a bit. I logged waaay too many hours in 09 though. If you're not under 50 on 18 holes you aren't gonna beat me.
You know going into Tiger, 2012 Masters Edition has to be the best one of all time. My brothers and I still play that one.
For anyone who has a Switch and loves retro video games, the Nintendo online subscription is worth the price just for the library of classic games you get to play.
In year 2 of my Tech Dynasty we have your #1 Virginia Tech Hokies vs #7 LOLUVA?
You better not be the team to end the streak
2 years 2 dubs
Conker's. Bad. Fur. Day. Anyone who disagrees has zero sense of humor or just hates foul-mouthed squirrels.
Other favorites of mine that I don't believe have been mentioned:
Day of the Tentacle
Sam & Max
The Dig
Full Throttle
Castlevania - symphony of the night
Castlevania III
River City Ransom
Star Tropics
Metroid II (the gameboy one)
Final Fantasy III
Doom
Descent II
Heretic... who didn't love turning your opponent in to a chicken???
Diablo 1 & 2
Half Life
Warcraft II & III
God of War
... and NCAA Football. All of them
BIG EDIT: Left off Tie Fighter from my list
Edit 2: TMNT2 and Battletoads need to be added.
My parents wouldn't get Conkers Bad Fur Day for us back in the day. Lol. Never got to play it, ... And it's expensive as fuck these days.
If you have a XBox One you can scoop up Rare Replay for like $15. Conker's Bad Fur Day is one of the included titles in the collection. Its a pretty solid port of the game.
If you were under 18 at the time then your parents were probably right. I remember the game, at the time, definitely pushed the envelope a bit when it came to language and violence, granted it was in a cartooney way.
Are you talking about the DOS game? Because I would have to agree, and I still play it to this day.
TIE Fighter is the greatest Star Wars game ever made and it isn't even close.
I still play on steam from time to time, but it isn't the same using a console-style controller instead of a joystick.
I have the newer CD version remake of that and XWing, along with XWing Alliance which came around quite a bit later but is the same style and is also an awesome game. And you are right, nothing compares to playing with an actual joystick.
I still have the DOS version I will run from time to time just because it has more missions, for whatever reason.
I can't recall if I have the disk version or CD, but I know I still have them. Same for X-Wing, including the A-Wing and B-Wing expansions. I can't say I've played either any time recently, but I came close to scratching that itch when the games were re-released on GOG and Steam recently.
Yup, I am. It also ruined flight sims for me in general - I've tried others (e.g., X3) and never ever got in to them the same way that this game gripped me. No star wars game has come to capturing the same combination of playability, story, and proximity to the core plot of the original movies.
Ohh man, I used to love California Games. My dad had an Atari 2600 that I played it on when I was super young.
Besides our handheld football game this was my brother and mine's very first video game on the Commodore 64 i had demanded for Christmas. We played it until the floppy disks were rubbed raw from insertion and reinsertion over and over and over again. (that's what she said)
I would say the word classic is relative here, and for me, NES was early childhood, SNES was elementary school, PS1 and N64 middle school, and PS2 high school, so I'll divide my classics by those generations.
NES:
Final Fantasy
Dragon Warrior 1, 2 &3
Zelda 1 &2
Mike Tyson's Punchout
Metal Gear
Fester's Quest
Blaster Master
Mario 1, 2 & 3

Tekken
Metal Gear Solid
FIFA
Madden
N64:
Goldeneye
Mario Cart
Star Fox
FIFA
PS2/Xbox:
FIFA
NBA Street
Madden
Halo
Final Fantasy X
My senior year of high school featured a lot of my soccer teammates and I playing FIFA non-stop, even in school (if we could find an empty room and hook an XBox up to a projector), with a little Halo mixed in.
Zelda 64 is the first game I ever beat... Video games were hard back in the day, especially when you couldn't save.
Also would like to add the original Tomb Raider to the list.
NES:
Tecmo Bowl, Super Tecmo Bowl
Little League Baseball
Contra
Double Dragon
RBI Baseball Series
MT's Punch Out
Blades of Steel
Ice Hockey
And of course, all the Mario's were great.
SNES:
MARIO KART
Super Mario
Ken Griffey Jr's Major League Baseball
Super Tennis
Star Fox
F-Zero
Top Gear
Ninja Turtles- Turtles in Time
NBA JAM
Super Punch Out - Record amongst friends beating Gabby Jay was 6.57s (#LeadTsunami)
N64:
GoldenEye (obv)
Mario Kart
1080 Snowboarding
Wave Race
Mario 64
I love a lot of games but here are the ones that stick out to me the most
SNES:
About 5 different super mario games
FFVI (marketed originally as III in the US) one of my all-time favorite games.
N64:
LoZ: Ocarina of time and Majora's Mask
Goldeneye
Mario 64
Super Smash Bros
PS1:
FFVII
FFIX
PS2:
FFX (probably my favorite game of all time up there with FFVI and OoT)
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
SSX Tricky/3
God of War games
GTA: Vice City/San Andreas
FFXII (gameplay was solid, storyline was way below FF standards)
Devil May Cry 3 (absurdly difficult game, they just don't make games where you can get stuck like this anymore)
Shadow of the Colossus
I don't know what the cutoff for "classic" games is but I'll stop at PS2.
I do YouTube reviews on NES games if anyone cares and if self promotion is allowed. Stop by and give a Hokie holler if you like it.
https://www.youtube.com/nesfriend
So youre the angry video game nerd? Cool...lol
Seriously though...I got my kids an NES Classic for Christmas and was shocked to learn Contra or Double Dribble wasn't on there.
I'm a genuinely pleasant video game nerd :)
Crash Bandicoot and Super Smash Bros (for N64)
Rush 2 on the N64
I remember in high school my good friend and I played the Sega Saturn a ton.
Bust a Move and a game called Dragon Force thats one of my all time favorites.
LIving in the dorms early 2000s we wore out SSX Tricky
Alright, time for some love for pre-console games along with some others from the 90s
Doom
Wolfenstein 3D
Catacomb 3-D and the ones that followed
Sim City
Sim City 2000
Sim Ant (yup, they made it)
Roller Coaster Tycoon
Descent
Command and Conquer
Command and Conquer: Red Alert
Starcraft
Warcraft (not WoW, the originals)
Zoombinis Logical Journey
Super Solvers: Gizmos & Gadgets
Super Solvers: Treasure Cove
Super Solvers: Treasure Mountain
Couple NES Games I haven't seen mentioned
Excitebike
Boy and his Blob
Paperboy
Tecmo NBA Baskebtall
Top Gun (though, if you ever landed on the carrier, you're a damn liar)
Rampage
SNES Games
Robotrek
Addams Family
FIFA 96
NHL 95
It is funny how much of a joke this became, but landing the plane was not that hard. Fueling was harder. Beating the game--impossible without cheating, still pretty damn hard after cheating.
Command and Conquer skirmishes were so much fun. Almost always preferred frittering away hours building as large a base as possible then marching across the map and wreaking havoc to the actual campaign missions.
An aside, Red Alert 3 doesn't exactly count as classic since it came out in 2008, but it does have Tim Curry as the Soviet Colonel and I feel like that is worth noting. Ha.
You and me both.
I would make a point of doing a 12 base skirmish, letting the computer fight amongst themselves while I quietly set up a super fortified base, and then just went all Russian "throw as many people and tanks at them as possible" once I was ready
Man, that was the best. So much fun. Couple of hours of build up for a 10 minute march across the map.
Tanks? All I want to hear during my march to dominance is "Kirov Reporting".
Uniracers for SNES was amazing. It is almost impossible to find a cartridge of it these days and not bust open your wallet.
NES:
River City Ransom
Contra
Mega Man
Blaster Master
Castlevania
Dragon Warrior
Jackal
SNES:
Secret of Mana
Donkey Kong Country
Mario Kart
If you are going to list Jackal then you may as well list Ikari Warriors as well. Never came close to finishing that but it was fun trying!
Had to YouTube it because I never heard of it. Jackal has it beat on graphics (that sounds funny when talking about NES games). I still have my NES so I'll see if I can find it on EBay and give it a try.
My freshman year of college we would have our entire dorm floor playing epic hours long games of Counterstrike.
I still go back and play the original NES Mega Man series, as well as the first Bionic Commando & NES Double Dragon II.
NHL '94 on Genesis was about the only way I could see the Blackhawks at the time
Descent deathmatches on the O'Shag LAN in the mid-90's were awesome. So was Warcraft II
My hall mate had an old school NES and he beat Mega Man 2.... I was amazed, I can't tell you how many times I tried to do that and failed. I was to young to know what I was doing.
Anyways I have Mega Man 2 on my phone. I beat it myself all the time!
If you played an N64 and picked Oddjob, you are an A-hole.
Or proximity mines.
Proximity mines, throw them on an ammo box, and then collect the ammo
Box would reappear with the mine inside and not visible. Pure evil. I used it on my brother, often.
Also used remote mines and found you could trigger them in the air by pressing A and B together.
Anybody ever play the original wing commander privateer game? GTA in space. Closest i've found nowadays is rebel galaxy. Also, they're making a prequel to RG that will be first person with some very privateer looking ship cockpits...
I absolutely loved Privateer, much more than the Wing Commander games. I hadn't made the GTA connection, but I guess you're right in that the game rewards smuggling and running contraband in pursuit of cash.
Yeah man:
Also, since privateer came out 4 years before GTA1, I'm gonna say it was GTA before GTA was a thing (and when space/flight sims were really popular)
1. Backyard Baseball 2001
2. Backyard Football 2002
3. Star Wars Battlefront 2 (PS2)
Ok get off my lawn......
For me, classic video games are all from before we had home consoles (except for Pong). We're talking stand up arcade games at the bowling alley that took the place of pinball machines one by one in the 70's.
Space invaders
Asteroids
Tempest
Joust
Donkey kong
Qbert
Frogger
Missle command
Centipede
Pacman
Galaga
Defender
You forgot Yars' Revenge. But yeah, great list.
My favorites growing up outside of your standard Atari and NES games.
Dragon Warrior 1 & 2
Ultima III: Exodus
Rygar
Karnov
Little Nemo: Dream Master haha
720Β°
Skate or Die
Luckily, I still have a FC Twin that works.
Ah man I had dragon warrior 1&2 for Gameboy color and loved it. Though Dragon Warrior 3 was my favorite.
Dragon warrior 3 on the GB was really something. What felt like a series of getting stuck for awhile between huge breakthroughs.
When Dragon Warrior first released I thought "how can video game graphics get any better than this?"
Anyone remember the Michael Jackson game for Sega? Moonwalker.
Yup, that shit was awesome. Super clear recollection of a friend renting it from Blockbuster in like second grade and us playing through it a several times.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors. My brothers and I loved that game.
I have this one on my RetroPie! I whipped it out at a party and played multiplayer. It started off easy enough, but the difficulty really ramps up quickly. Definitely a good game to play with friends.
Yeah that was crazy fun, especially if you're familiar with the classic horror movies it parodies
Sike, the original Legend of Zelda is the best game ever.
O'Doyle rules.
WoW Classic coming 27 August (26 August in the Americas). Invite-only Beta started Monday.
Fuck yeah, I'm going to play this. Stunlock rogues, FTW!

We have a Raspberry Pi that has old school games on it. HokieEnginerd has gotten Mini LancerHokie hooked on FFII. He is such a proud father.
Wait is HokieEnginerd actually your dad?
No! You might need to TKP more, as there have been many posts about HokieEnginerd and myself. HokieEnginerd is my husband. He has gotten our daughter(who is basically a mini me) hooked on playing FFII on the Raspberry Pi. He is proud that she is following in his footsteps and enjoying the old school games.
Japanese two or American two?
Cause Japanese two takes a long time when you don't speak/ read Japanese.
American Two
I TKP a decent amount.
*Looks at wall of turkey legs #101*
I guess I've just never seen it mentioned
You missed the great "spoon or fork for eating mashed potatoes" debate of 2018.
Fork!
And the random injury/thing that happened to you thread where he broke the wheel of my car almost in half when he hit something driving to work...
Yea I don't remember that either. I mostly hang out in the actual sport forums
Then why are you at this site?
