I thought this we be a fun thread cause I have a pretty good story. So I've been playing Ncaa football 05 on the ps2 lately and of course I'm doing a Virginia Tech Dynasty. Well I just finished the 1st season and I have made it to the national championship game. As the 3rd rank team in the nation. You might be thinking who got snubbed as the number 2 team in the country is. Well it was poor ole southern miss😅😅😅😅

Funny you mentioning NASCAR Video Games. My favorite that I still play was NASCAR Thunder 2003, and that's on Gamecube. But the original NASCAR Racing for PC might be the most memorable, and playing with the keyboard only was something else.

If anyone is into classic games and has a mac, I cannot recommend OpenEmu enough. It's easier to use and more organized than any other emulator I've used and it can run almost any classic system.
I liked it enough to donate for something free, not dissimilar to TKP.
OpenEmu is awesome! I really wish there was a windows version. I've also built a RetroPie system and have loaded at least 100 SNES and NES games on to it. I bought a few 8BitDo bluetooth SNES controllers and have been having a blast reliving my childhood favorites.
Yeah I really hope a windows version is in the works. And I've never built a pie system but it sounds like its a great solution.
I have a retro pie with close to 1500 games. Its fun and overwhelming at the same time. I just don't have time for FF6 all over again.

Emuparadise was the best option, but they recently disabled all of their download links. There's a workaround to get them from Emuparadise still, which is probably the "safest" bet, but sharing such a thing here may be a violation of site TOS.

I've been replaying Final Fantasy VII recently for the first time since middle school. It is still such a good game. The replay has made me look forward to the remake even more, assuming it ever actually comes out.
FF7 is maybe the Switch port I'm looking forward to the most. Being able to play that game on the go is going to be amazing.

Mastoden, don't know how much I'll be playing because trying to join a group for ARMA 3 with the Warhammer 40K Mod "Only War" and that might be some time commitment and on weekends might have some tabletop 40K games , it might be mostly weeknights.

This and Battletoads were the hardest games I remember playing. My introduction to rage quitting came in the Battletoads "wall dodging" level. That and JRPGs with boss battles that lasted 45 minutes only to die and have to start all over again...

I was gonna say, a football game from 2004 is a "classic", both in time since release as well as, y'know, its ability to stand out from among its peers? I mean, NCAA 14 has potential a decade or two from now, since that's the last one and best one they ever made, but I dunno.
Tetris is a classic. Super Mario World is a classic. Goldeneye is a classic. NFL Quarterback Club '99 is not.

Lol, I never said there was anything wrong with it. I actually have fond memories of the game, and as a kid I was infinitely amused that one time I used (Lee) Flowers to tackle (Roosevelt) Potts.
However, "classic" is not the word I'd use to describe it or the vast majority of other annual sports games of the era.
They didn't have video games the year I was born. :(
I still go back to the NCAA games more than I'd like to admit. The NCAA basketball games were fun as hell, too. I'll also end up replaying a Final Fantasy game once a year or so (last year's replay was IX.). I still love bioware games, but the thought of calling them "classic" just makes me feel old.
Oh, and Braid. Because it's awesome and still holds up well today.

I have replayed many a FF game. IX is one of my favorites. Probably a close third behind X and VI.
So back in the day I didn't really hold IX in that high regard. Yeah I liked it but to me it was just something to tide me over until FFX, which I loved. A few years ago I replayed IX and X and to me IX held up much, much better than X did. FFX was my jam at the time it came out, but it was really hard for me to replay the remastered edition now.

Naw man they aren't worth as much as you may think as they age. You are running the risk of capacitors going bad and having a box of crap that doesn't work. There was no point not to enjoy it.
I suppose my surface scan of Ebay wasn't quite accurate, but it still looks like new-in-box N64s go for about $300-$350, and you can buy them used for about $50.
In any case, glad you're enjoying it. We plug my wife's old N64 in every once in a while for some Mario Kart or Yoshi's Story, and I still pull the NES out of the closet once or twice a year for some SMB3.

Proximity mines in the complex was one of my favorite map/weapon combos. It was maddening (not slappers level maddening) yet fun.

For the PC, the best game I ever played is a relatively unknown (in the US at least, it seems) MMORPG called Lineage II. That games was pure art, and it sucked up about 5 years of my life.
We played GTA3 heavily back in the day then I didn't really play any of VC or 4...then 5 dropped and I played that shit religiously in college.

I think it depends on how old you are, and the genre/style of game. For me, there are a handful of early 00's games that might qualify, but that's pushing it, and you'd have to go back to the N64/PS1 era or further to really find what I'd consider "classics"
For me it had to be Star Fox 64. Great story line. Fun combat crafts. And (IMOP) the best video game score EVER (just listen to the GLORIOUS finale and end credits music). SPOILER ALERT:

College and PS1- The 1997 College Football was amazing. I loved picking teams with good fullbacks and while everyone else would throw the ball, I would 3 yards and cloud of dust them and control the clock, then pop a little play action in there.
ALL EA SPORTS HOCKEY GAMES, but 1995 NHL Hockey on the Sega was amazing. Playing as my 1994 Rangers... spectacular.
I will add a shout out for NBA Jam. Plus, the EA sports NBA game circa around 1998. Arvydas Sabonis and French = unstoppable.
Friday the 13th was ridiculous. Every time Jason showed up you died. It just seemed like a pointless game but for some reason you'd get bored every month or so and you'd try to beat it. I hated running around that map fighting zombies or whatever the hell they were.

reading this thread reminds me of the ROMs I have loaded on the media PC that have been dormant for far too long. Can't wait til my kids are old enough to play through some classics with me so I can do it and still call it "quality time."
My friend up the street had a Sega Dreamcast back in the day. We'd play Crazy Taxi, Hydro Thunder, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, NBA2K, NFL Street with MV7, some Sonic the Hedgehog games.....lots of fun.
I didn't have a lot of games myself, I sort of topped out at Game Boy Color with one edition of Pokemon and Super Mario. But I did rock a Mac Arcade Pak circa 1997.
Dreamcast had some real gems. Soul Caliber was an excellent game on that system.
Dreamcast was a fantastic system that had a tragically short run. To this day the 2K sports series on Dreamcast are among my favorite sports titles ever. Had a bunch of good original games (Shenmue!!!) as well as some high quality arcade ports (House of the Dead & Silent Scope in particular).

My parents wouldn't get Conkers Bad Fur Day for us back in the day. Lol. Never got to play it, ... And it's expensive as fuck these days.
If you have a XBox One you can scoop up Rare Replay for like $15. Conker's Bad Fur Day is one of the included titles in the collection. Its a pretty solid port of the game.
If you were under 18 at the time then your parents were probably right. I remember the game, at the time, definitely pushed the envelope a bit when it came to language and violence, granted it was in a cartooney way.

TIE Fighter is the greatest Star Wars game ever made and it isn't even close.
I still play on steam from time to time, but it isn't the same using a console-style controller instead of a joystick.
I have the newer CD version remake of that and XWing, along with XWing Alliance which came around quite a bit later but is the same style and is also an awesome game. And you are right, nothing compares to playing with an actual joystick.
I still have the DOS version I will run from time to time just because it has more missions, for whatever reason.
I can't recall if I have the disk version or CD, but I know I still have them. Same for X-Wing, including the A-Wing and B-Wing expansions. I can't say I've played either any time recently, but I came close to scratching that itch when the games were re-released on GOG and Steam recently.
Yup, I am. It also ruined flight sims for me in general - I've tried others (e.g., X3) and never ever got in to them the same way that this game gripped me. No star wars game has come to capturing the same combination of playability, story, and proximity to the core plot of the original movies.

Besides our handheld football game this was my brother and mine's very first video game on the Commodore 64 i had demanded for Christmas. We played it until the floppy disks were rubbed raw from insertion and reinsertion over and over and over again. (that's what she said)

It is funny how much of a joke this became, but landing the plane was not that hard. Fueling was harder. Beating the game--impossible without cheating, still pretty damn hard after cheating.
Command and Conquer skirmishes were so much fun. Almost always preferred frittering away hours building as large a base as possible then marching across the map and wreaking havoc to the actual campaign missions.
An aside, Red Alert 3 doesn't exactly count as classic since it came out in 2008, but it does have Tim Curry as the Soviet Colonel and I feel like that is worth noting. Ha.

I would make a point of doing a 12 base skirmish, letting the computer fight amongst themselves while I quietly set up a super fortified base, and then just went all Russian "throw as many people and tanks at them as possible" once I was ready

Anybody ever play the original wing commander privateer game? GTA in space. Closest i've found nowadays is rebel galaxy. Also, they're making a prequel to RG that will be first person with some very privateer looking ship cockpits...
I absolutely loved Privateer, much more than the Wing Commander games. I hadn't made the GTA connection, but I guess you're right in that the game rewards smuggling and running contraband in pursuit of cash.

I have this one on my RetroPie! I whipped it out at a party and played multiplayer. It started off easy enough, but the difficulty really ramps up quickly. Definitely a good game to play with friends.

He has gotten our daughter(who is basically a mini me) hooked on playing FFII on the Raspberry Pi. He is proud that she is following in his footsteps and enjoying the old school games.
