OT: Commonwealth Clash 2018-2019

My apologies, everyone. I've been slammed at work and haven't had a chance to put together a true write-up for The Clash this year. Still really don't have time, but I noticed we have a lull until the next event and wanted to let everyone know where we stand.

Below is the historical performance of each school from 14-15 through this year. LOLUVa has already scored a spring point due to how early in the season the women's tennis teams met.

Some points of interest:

  • Last year LOLUVa complained that The Clash was rigged because teams like their dominant women's soccer squad didn't get to contribute. Yeah, well our lady hokies beat the hoos in soccer when they did play this year. So there.
  • For the second time in 3 years, we managed to draw the men's soccer team.
  • For the second year in a row, we tied the winter 3.5-3.5

We have 8 events remaining so The Clash is still very much up in the air. Track and Field and Golf are scored based on who finishes better in the ACC championships. Baseball and Softball points go to whoever wins the series. Lacrosse and Tennis points go to the winner of the regular season game between the two.

We need 4 points in the spring to win. 3.5 results in a tie and I'll have to check on ACC championships to see where we stand there. Let's just assume Golf is off the table. Baseball and Softball aren't looking too hot this year, but maybe we can eek out a split on one or both. Women's lacrosse is looking good. Track and Field is always a strong showing for us, but LOLUVa has pushed us in recent years so those aren't guarunteed. We actually pulled off a point in Men's tennis last year. I don't see 4 easy points anywhere here. So that will keep things interesting come April/May.

So what exactly is the fan point and how did UVA win that in 2014? Is it based on spring game TV audience?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

the first year of the clash they had a food drive competition and LOLUVa won. They did not include it in subsequent years. Updated spreadsheet with a note.

Thanks for this have been wondering and not a lot of sources out there.

Why is women's soccer excluded?

women's soccer only counts in the years where we play a regular season match. Due to the rotation, that's not every year.

Also:

The Commonwealth Clash will not include field hockey, rowing, men's and women's squash and men's lacrosse during the 2018–2019 season because only University of Virginia sponsors these varsity sports.

If we win, you can bet there will be some seething hoos over on lesabre touting their prowess in these sports.

What are our odds of winning this year? I assume that they are heavily favored in baseball, which would even it back up. Given our performance in indoor track, can we assume victories for outdoor track? It looks live they have dominated men's and women's golf in recent years so I assume that's going the other way. I really have no idea about softball, lacrosse and tennis. Anyone have a very educated guess how this thing plays out?

Softball: split
Men's Tennis: LOLUVa
Men's Golf: LOLUVa
Women's Golf: LOLUVa
Women's Lacrosse: VT
Women's T&F: VT
Men's T&F: VT
Baseball: LOLUVa

Based off of this, we tie with the winner of the most ACC championships winning it all. Right now I believe we sit at 1-0 (men's indoor T&F), but I think LOLUVa is about to land one with basketball. Wrestling happens this weekend so it's possible we could gain another. But, basically, it all comes down to the spring one way or the other.

We cant split softball, they play a 3 game series, which I think we will win. This will give us the Commenwealth Clash for the 3rd straight year!

Nah, UNC will have at least a share of the Basketball title.

Pretty sure the clash looks at the tournament champions, if applicable. Meaning it almost certainly won't be UVA, since we know how they perform in single-elimination environments.

If that doesn't count then our men's indoor t&f one doesn't count since we tied with fsu

As someone who follows D1 WLAX, last year's Hokie win was legitimate. Definitely the better team . This year they will be facing a stronger Hoos team. So, I wouldn't count that one as a win for sure. I think it is about a 50% we win that game. Hopefully we don't need that win for the Clash....

I mean, don't let all of this distract you from the fact that UVa lost to a 16th seed.

Not sure why you think Softball isn't looking so hot this year. The Hokies have started 16-3 with an 8-7 win over #8 Georgia this weekend while UVA has started the year 8-9 so far.

Even baseball, UVA has started 5-5, although they started 0-3 with losses to three ranked teams. The Hokies have started 8-2 but have not played any ranked teams.
