Jim Delany is hanging it up.
The long-time commissioner of the Big Ten Conference is planning to leave his post after more than three decades at the helm by next summer, when his contract expires on June 30, 2020.
The announcement came Monday morning from the league, which issued a news release saying the Big Ten's council of presidents and chancellors has started the search process for a replacement. Los Angeles-based consulting firm Korn Ferry will assist in the search
This will be an interesting search.

Honestly a conference commissioner job may be the one she really is suited for.
She might want the NFL job post-Goodell. The BIG job would be an ideal stepping stone for her.

That guy catches a lot of grief, but the ACC is a decent conference in both football and basketball.
He didn't make ACC basketball better, the collapse of the Big East left the ACC with no rival. It's not a great footbalk conference routinely ranked 4th out of the p5. None of this is any difference than before. The facilities arent great for football in hall the conference. Hell how old is duke's visiting locker room? 5-7 years? Before that you rented extra buses for half time.
Mainly he gets a lot of grief for being late on the conference TV deal, and funneling money in to raycom sports, which would exist without the ACC.
The ACC puts more players in the NFL than everyone but the SEC, they are the dominate basketball league, so where is our money? Where is everything the other leagues have? That's in the league offices. Which means it's on swofford.
Well, he was basically the finger on the button that dismantled the BE when he brought Miami, VT, and BC in to the ACC, and then when nuclear on them by taking Pitt, L'Ville and ND. So yes, he made the ACC better by killing off a rival.
As for football... an ACC team has won 3 of the last 6 national championships. The conference had won 1 out of the last 15 prior to that (2/15 if you really want to include current conference alignments).
He's also the one at the helm as the new ACCN gets off the ground.
Facts seem to back-up that he's doing at least an effective jop as commish.
Great he killed off the rival for basketball, now we have the unquestionable the best basketball conference which doesn't show primetime top 15 games on a national scale. What's the use of being number 1?
Sure 3 of 6, but winning a title doesnt mean the conference is good, we had one good team last season and still won the title. In the 2015 playoffs an undefeated defending champion FSU was 3rd with 1 loss Bama and 1 loss Oregon being higher ranked. That's not a good conference when the only undefeated team is talked about not getting a chance to play for the title, that is g5 stuff.
Great we are finally getting the ACCN 13 years after the mountain west got a network (yes I know it was a failure). But when we are the last p5 to get a network I wouldn't call it a win. (Big 12 has a network its call fox sports).
EDIT: Swofford was the commissioner during that 1 out of 15 run. In addition, the ACC should have lost their BCS auto bid.

Average rank of greater than 12 (12.75) over a 4 year period should have triggered a review of our AQ status, but never did. The ACC should have lost their auto bid for 2007. The rule was put in and dubbed the Big East Rule because in 98 Cuse was not ranked very high.
I'm on the fence about Swofford probably because of how bad Mike Tranghese was in the big east.
Actually, as I'm typing this I am getting off the fence about Swofford because he basically recreated the Big East complete with a crappy (I know some people disagree) Notre Dame deal. For those who like the Notre Dame deal name another P5 conference that would accept a deal like this.

I gwt where you're coming from but Swofford barely managed a network deal nearly a decade too late after selling ACC's soul to ND. I don't care if he will be the most
powerfuloldest commissioner, he won't be able to capitalize on it to benefit ACC.He didn't turn Clemson around, Dabo and Clemson did. He protected UNCheat (I suspect) . He gave his son media rights under shit-tastic terms for the ACC.

Fair but I think incomplete. I don't agree with protecting UNC, but is it good for the ACC? I think it was, even if I have to sell my soul a bit to think so.
Who do we get next? Is the next ACC commissioner Adam Silver? At the moment I'm thinking a protectionist standpoint might serve us best - carry the torch until someone great comes along.
As far as the ACC Network is concerned, we didn't have the pull of the SEC or BIG, so I think allowing the market to evolve/emerge over their (quite risky) introductions may have allowed us to position ourselves well, though at a lower revenue target than the more powerful conferences.

The SEC was a few years after Pac12 and Big 10 and even Longhorns, so they were less risky than the others, but they had the 3:30 CBS deal to showcase themselves.
It also appears you are only thinking football, the ACC is THE basketball conference. There are so many Duke and UNC fans that have never stepped foot in the state of carolina, these are major brands. The ACC network should own the first 2.5 months of the year. Hopefully we learn from the others mistakes, but so far it looks like we are just lagging behind.

The Pac12 network started in 2011 and SEC in 2014. The ACC had basketball leverage, along with football, to make a deal contemporary to these but Swofford couldn't get it done. It's almost a decade later with millions upon millions to each ACC school lost every year because he failed. It wasn't because he didn't want to do it. He simply couldn't get it done and the deal he finally got pays less per school while giving more rights than any other network deal. On top of that he had to inflate the ACC value by agreeing to a hostage deal with ND (I know some disagree) just to get what we got.
We can agree to disagree though.
I don't know who would replace him but a major conference should be able to attract seriously good prospects right? Why does it have to settle for a League Commissioner in waiting type of handoff?
I'd be interested in who the next commissioner would be. I would hope we could get a great one but who even knows what we would end up with.
The SEC has the most influence in the biggest money sport, so seeing their success and early adoption of their own network was probably s bit easier for them than it was for us.
The PAC 12 network started early but is it achieving what it was supposed to? Last i heard it was lagging behind and further removing visibility of the conference. I see less of the PAC 12 today than i ever have, even with their most popular games.

Swofford has indeed gotten on this bandwagon late but I'm not a hundred percent critical of it. With the general lack of football power, seeing how the model evolved before jumping in wasn't entirely lacking prescience.
I would like more money though. And basketball is a solid point. Had we had a TV network a few years back, would the ACC now have Rutgers as a member after pursuing the NY market?
In the long run i think swofford has done more good than harm for the conference.
He is a YUUGE state of North Carolina Homer. Why the hell did we have the Tournament in Greensboro for as long as we did, just because the ACC offices are nearby? I've also think he has protected UNC from NCAA sanctions when they deserve more of a punishment. I have a list of grievances with thus guy.
