OT: Alex Trebek has passed away

Update: Alex passed away this morning

And the comments at the beginning of Monday's show

Earlier post from 2019:

Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Ugh, as someone who watches Jeopardy every night and really respects the hell out of the man behind the podium, this sucks. I hope he's able to pull through, but this diagnosis is usually very, very grim. Survival rates for this diagnosis are typically about a 2.7% chance of living for 5 years and 1% chance of outright beating it. Most patients end up passing away within 6 months.

But then again, cancer didn't form it's diagnosis in the form of a question, so if there is one badass mofo out there who is gonna beat it, it's him

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

Uggh. From a family of 5 that records and watches Jeopardy together, this is traumatic news for us all.

Fuck cancer

I lost my grandmother to this type of cancer. Unfortunately with this type of cancer it isn't whether or not you will beat it, just how long you have until it kills you.

I don't know if this runs afoul of the community guidelines but whatever. If you feel like helping out cancer researchers directly, consider joining The World Community Grid project and donate some of your unused computer time. This is a completely non-profit humanitarian project. You join and download a program called BOINC ( Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) and it talks to the WCG's servers and downloads small computer programs that various researchers around the world develop to help them attack the biggest research projects today. They have had several cancer projects, Ebola reseach, AIDS research. climate change, and clean energy. I personally have run it on my various computers since 2008 and have contributed just under 150 years of computing time with 95 years going towards their various cancer projects. One of the WCG's main requirements is that all research developed by the WCG projects must be releasable to the public. So no one is going to be piggie backing of your donated time to come up with commercial products.

This only makes small dent the overall cancer research but lots of small drops makes a flood. If you have been personally affected by cancer, please give it a look and consider it.

I have never heard of this but after doing some light reading this is awesome.

I was reading an older article on it when only about 500k devices were registered. The fact that when only ~500,000 devices were registered and its still the 5th most powerful super computer in the world. Currently looks like there are over 4 million devices registered. That's a ton of donated computer power. Will be setting this up on all of my PCs

BOINC can be a bit much on laptops because laptops today are not designed to run at 100% continuously. They don't have the air flow to handle the temps. Desktops however, they can run 100% for years on end and not have any negative effects.

Amazing

Amazingly scary.

Idiots.

Oh for fuck sake. Say it ain't so.

This hits hard on so many levels. I have been watching Jeopardy! since I was a kid ( and now I have mini LancerHokie watching it ). HokieEnginerd says that I am the "Queen of Useless Trivia." It is like an iconic piece of the daily routine has been attacked and nothing as we know it will be the same.

Cancer in any form SUCKS!!! It impacts too many people both directly and indirectly. The worst moments of my life were the days before my 29th birthday when I was told that test results had come back as cancerous and I needed to see an oncologist the next day. Then going to the oncologist the following day to be told "You have cancer. We don't know how bad it is right now. All we do know is that it is rare, clear-cell, and aggressive." Yeah I didn't turn 29. I was VERY VERY fortunate that it was found early and I didn't have to go through chemo or radiation--just some minor procedures and lots of monitoring. 9 years later all is good.

I hope Trebek does fight like hell and also hope that eventually there is a cure...

FUCK DAMMIT!

So incredibly sad. Would Jeopardy still be Jeopardy without Alex Trebek? I can't even imagine it and hope I don't have to.

I've been watching Jeopardy since I was a kid (and I firmly believe it has contributed my my know-it-all-ism).

When me and Mrs theMattBoard first got married and had no money (we still don't but more than then) we'd watch Jeopardy every evening since we didn't have cable and couldn't afford to go out anywhere. We still watch today. Side note: We kicked ass in Double Jeopardy last night after getting destroyed in the All Star Tournament last week.

Alex Trebek has been a guest in my house most weeknights as long as I can remember. Cancer sucks.

I do art stuff.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Truly sad news. At 78 years old, I am surprised he is choosing to fight it but if he is inspired and can stay in good spirits, he can be a lasting inspiration for many generations who follow this show. As someone who lost grandparents, uncles and a wife to cancer as well as multiple survivors in the family, it is painful to hear about any diagnosis.

It takes a Bad Ass MFer to know what he has ahead of him, look into the camera, joke about it, and casually drop that he is going to keep working.

casually drop that he is going to keep working.

Yeah not to mention the guy makes over $10 mill a year and has a net worth over $50 mil. Really he doesn't have to work, his diagnosis is grim and a lot of people would chose to quit work and do something else while they have the chance. To me this shows you how much he respects the fans of the show and enjoys his job.

Everyone of these gifs and pictures encapsulates how I feel. Will I cry as much as I did when Dale Earnhardt died? Probably not, but this one hurts.

My first thought on hearing this news was:

If Alex Trebek has cancer and ends up dying from it, what chance do any of us have? I'm just going to give up on trying to take care of myself and live life to the fullest. Screw cancer...

We record Jeopardy and watch it every night while we eat dinner. It's our little thing. Now both our 4 year old and 2 year old expect it. In fact, every once in a while, if there's a question that pertains to fairy tales or kid's stories, we'll pause it and read it slowly to our 4 year old, who gets super excited to get a question right.

My 2 year old learned two responses very early on: LET'S GO.... HOKIES!! and THIS IS.... JEOPARDY!!

So in summary, fuck Cancer. Hope Alex Trebek can win this fight!

I'll be pulling for him, but boy, do I know a thing or two about this. My father passed away 5 years ago (day of VT vs Marshall OT) from this form. It is nasty. He fought for 2.5 years, but it widdled away at his body. We threw every drug combo at it, but ultimately, his body broke down. In light of that, my wife used her VT + VCOM degree to pursue HEM/ONC medicine, and I'm happy to say that we now spend all our working energy fighting this terrible disease. Research is changing daily, and you never know, team, there is always hope. Great minds are working diligently to make gains. Just keep pushing.

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

Damn, that's awful. Keep up the fight.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

Football season might be starting up this week, but Trebek already stole the show

Sean Connery and Alex Trebek passing away in the same week? Not a coincidence. You think you're so smart, Trebek with your dago mustache and your greasy hair!

But seriously, very sad news. Given the stage and diagnosis of his cancer, we all knew it was coming but he had such a great, positive attitude that you still thought he'd beat it. God speed, Alex. See you on the other side.

I'll take the rapist for $500 Alex.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

THE PEN IS MIGHTIER!

Someone go put some bubblewrap on Darrell Hammond

I'm hoping when SNL comes back (they are off next week), they fly in Will Ferrell and Darrell Hammond for a Heavenly Addition of Celebrity Jeopardy.

Fuck 2020 and Cancer!

He will definitely be missed. Jeopardy was always one of my favorites.

Sad news. Alex. You set a great example. Thank you. You made a heck of a positive impact on this world.
