8 Seed Mekhi Lewis took down a back to back Champion from PSU to win the national championship in his weight class.
I know this is buried in the Wrestling Thread, but it deserves its own thread.

NATIONAL CHAMP FAM LETS GET IT ALSO FUCK DEM BIG DAWGS PENN STATE LETS GOOOOO
Awesome!!!! ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!!!
Mekhi buried that dude like it was nothing. Huge near fall and fended off every shot. Made Joseph look silly.
VT has won national championships in track and field events, bass fishing, and now 165 pound wrestling. And he is a freshman! FAM!
Hokie Twitter says field hockey has 2 and maybe weightlifting?
And what about rugby?
Do they have any? I know back when I was in school the men's and women's team weren't anybody to mess with, especially those girls.
Watched that match, and after the first, he whipped the 3x defending champion's ass.
Happy for him and his family, who looked overjoyed with pride. May it be the first of many for the program.
If Mekhi don't get OW I'm calling the police cause that would be a robbery
What's that?
Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament which he won!
Let's go!
HOKIES!
I don't know a lot about wrestling, but I know Mekhi looked dominant and that was awesome.
I don't know much about wrestling either, but it was pretty obvious that he absolutely roasted that dude.
The moment the defending champ knew he was in trouble
The moment it was over
The end result
Bah GAWWD King!!
Dominating performance ALL TOURNAMENT LONG by Mehki. Outstanding Wrestler = Mehki Lewis
I love when Hokies do anything great, but thankful I got to watch this. So happy for him and his family.
Huge win, and he had a really tough draw to fight through.
No kidding. He had to beat an undefeated #1 seed, the 4 seed and a two time defending champ #2 seed.
He has to win most outstanding wrestler.
Usually that award goes to the wrestler who gets the most bonus point victories. No way Mehki beats out Bo Nickal who had 3 falls and a major.
Wow! I stand corrected and very happy for it!
So pumped up right now going out to get a lotto ticket with each of the seeds The Champ beat along the way, his seed, today's date and big ball first VT National Champion. 1-2-4-8-23 and #1 baby!
And when I win because of The Champ - Donations forthcoming to Athletic Fund and drinks for all of you gnarly VT wrestling fans.
Let's Go!
That dude is 165? He looks beastly! Congrats to Mekhi, way to represent!
He was probably 165 pounds when he weighed in. That is, when he was dehydrated, hungry, and after having a good bowel movement. All of these guys find temporary ways to keep their weight down for the competitive size advantage.
I'd be willing to bet he was closer to 170 by match time. He had all day to hydrate and fuel up.
I think these guys cut a lot more than 5 lbs. I don't know about the NCAA but UFC fighters routinely cut anywhere from 15-30 lbs and they're getting punched/kicked in the head, which is much more dangerous when dehydrated.
For what it's worth, I recently cut 15 pounds to not lose a wager between a few friends of mine, and the day after weigh-in, I had rehydrated back 9 pounds.
At NCAAs they have to weigh in each morning before the first session of the day starts. That means you can't put too much on because you'll just have to cut it again. That being said you don't have to worry about that after you weigh in on day 3.
What an incredible tournament run for Mekhi. He is truly something special. I thought he could be our first national champion but I definitely didn't expect it his freshmen year.
This is probably the greatest individual Hokie accomplishment since Angela Tincher.
He absolutely whipped him. Don't think I've ever seen a dude lock a cradle at that level.
He only got out of it because Mekhi was trying to avoid the stall call. He could've held that all day.
What a match and tournament from Mekhi! SO pumped for him and the Hokies, he destroyed Joseph and here to hope he makes it 4x in a row!
HELL YES!
That sound you hear is a giant ice cube cracking as I pour a fresh Basil Haden's into my glass...
Teammates are awesome
Lewis wins most outstanding wrestler of the tournament!
I know I know but for us wrestling fans ya gotta understand...
...junior year I was on the back deck of the frat house hanging with a few of the wrestlers who were leaving. Brands was leaving for Iowa and taking half the team with him. I remember being told the program might not get a coach for awhile, and could even go under. Then Dresser came along, and boy did he turn the program around. It was bittersweet when he left, but he helped setup SERTC, bring world class wrestling to Blacksburg, and setup Robie with a great program when he left. Mekhi won a world gold medal before this season even started. He is the result of a long and winding road for this program, and will be the first of what I hope are many many many more wrestling champions to come.
To add to that: If you haven't read the Kevin Dresser story you need to. I'll try to dig it up
Congrats Mekhi!!! FAM!
That's awesome! You don't become champ without a lot of work and sacrifice, so congratulations, Mekhi!
Hopefully this leads to even higher motivation for the rest of the team and more success on the recruiting trail so we can get closer to a team championship!
I don't know much about wrestling, but I got some riding time last night if you know what I mean!
One minute of riding time gets you a point in wrestling but It's probably not something to brag about when it comes to the bedroom. To each his own though.
Congrats on the Sex.
