That seems to be the end of that.

What a weird past 22ish hours
While I'm glad he is going to play, I really hope this is a 'by the book' kind of situation, not a 'think of the tournament' kind of situation.
edit: to clarify, if this is how the policy normally works, that is fantastic. I find it despicable when other schools bend the rules to get the star athlete a break. I was not trying to imply that was what had happened here.
further edit: "in accordance with our policies and procedures, we are following our departmental protocol involving..." is what i was looking for
'By the book' should be a look at the situation and what facts are known, history of conduct, a consideration of innocence until proven guilt, and then making the proper judgement call.
Zero tolerance policies are lazy and do more harm than good. Good for Whit for making (what looks like) the correct judgement.
I would argue that Ty would probably be safe even under a zero tolerance policy. He hasn't been charged with a crime, and the cops found some stuff at his apartment that he shares with a non-family member while he was across the country. He passed a drug test. Zero tolerance of what?
Edit: hasn't been convicted. He was definitely charged.
"Think of the tournament" is probably "by the book" at most institutions of higher learning.
Besides, this is flimsy at best. He will be 100% cleared of the charge after he returns from Minneapolis.
I see what you did there!
I'm fine with it. He was in San Jose when the cops smelled burning marijuana outside his apartment. Obviously he wasn't the one smoking. Could be a roommate or a friend in the apartment but he was clearly not there. Regardless of your feelings on the marijuana, it seems likely it wasn't his weed.
It is a misdemeanor charge, which carries no automatic university sanctions, based on weed found in his apartment while he wasn't there, and he passed a drug test when it came up. What else would you have had them do, and what is the point of this post?
I haven't followed the details of the case. If that is what happened, I'm glad it is playing out as it has.
I did not mean to suggest we had done otherwise.
I think it is, but even if it's not - and this may be an unpopular opinion - if Buzz is actually leaving I don't give two shits about doing things by the book. There's no point in punishing/holding people accountable if everyone is leaving and the culture is being rebuilt in a month anyway.
I'm not a fan of extra-judicial policies. Basically, how can VT be more just than just? I can understand certain aspects of risk management like a person being charged with building pipe bombs. For most of these "vice" and behavior control laws, I think the school should wait until the matter is adjudicated in the courts. Can you imagine a student being suspended over drinking a Coke because the town passed a sugary drink law? Sometimes that means a person who is later found guilty of a crime may play through their entire eligibility. Ultimately, it is the job of the justice system to handle these matters and exact punishment.
I also think it is incumbent on players to adhere to the school's policy regardless of how asinine it is, as entering into that relationship is voluntary.
Fantastic News, but the press will still bring this up for the next 2 days.
They should replace the sensational BS reporting on this, basically, "fender bender" with the $112.5M fine to Duke for research fraud. Jeesh....
Just wait until Friday night when we beat them, on an Outlaw 3 at the buzzer....then you will see all the haters come out at once.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
oh baby
Good, now back to speculating about buzz
Full statement.
I saw "Buzz Statement" and about had a heart attack.
Also source: his mom
Momma bear alert!!! Preach girl!!!
Telling it like it is.
To be fair, they're just enforcing the dumb ass law.
Should be changed. Is now, and always was ridiculous.
I have a hard time believing that charging someone with possession who is not actually in possession is the law.
But I admit I don't know all the details.
I think it's the idea that you control your property, so if they find stuff in your house or car, there is some control implied.
Not that I'd done any research at all on this, but it is clearly bullshit in this case.
The law I was talking about, though, is the whole legal treatment of marijuana.
its not his property, he rents. by that standard, landlords all over the country are in trouble.
Yeah that's not how the law works. Just like you're in possession of everything in your buddy's car that you're borrowing.
If you're renting, the stuff in your unit is under YOUR control, and you're legally responsible for it. We call it YOUR apartment if you're renting it. I didn't mean to imply otherwise.
(Reply to TheMVDude)
You're right about the way the law views possession. From Yahoo! Sports:
Still, seems like overzealous enforcement of the statute to me. Unless he basically had a stash with "Ty" written on it under his bed.
Putting my Jimmy Turk hat on here...
How can you argue that a dude had "dominion and control" over drugs in his apartment that he's 2500 miles away from and shares with a non-family member?
If that's how the law works, I could potentially be house sitting for Miss Pettitt, and decide that I'm going to blaze up while I'm watering her plants. If the cops show up, then I'd assume she's going to be charged for possession when she gets back from Dollywood.
If it's inside his apartment, it's his.
What's to say he's in Cali, and you go take his sofa, or computer, or shoes...he wasn't there, so they clearly cannot be his, right?
Isn't this somewhat complicated since this is a joint (heh) residence? What is his vs what is his roommates'?
C'mon, man.
Exactly.
Yeah but this is the great thing about our legal system is that he's innocent until they can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it is his not the other way around. Since he's not the only person that lives there and wasn't there at the time he's got more than enough plausible deniability to get out of this.
That's true but it will also cost him thousands of dollars to prove that innocence. I know he could opt for a public defender but that's a first class ticket to a plea.
I'm still fairly confident this gets dropped before trial and even a decent cheap lawyer can get the charges dropped to a ticket at arraignment
I think the piece I was missing was dismissal at arraignment.
Which is what will most likely happen. Just funny to see how many people blow this out of proportion or simply don't understand how the law operates. "Busting down the door in a raid!!!!" Things will shake out, and should go very well for Ty...just gotta let them go that way. Some of the knee jerk posts in here though...wow. (And most of my posts in here were attempting to show how crazy they were. Oh well. Go Hokies!!!!)
This will probably end up ok for Ty but only after a lot stress, time, and likely money. All of it is completely unnecessary because he shouldn't have been charged in the first place.
No, it means that there can exist probable doubt that it is his. Big difference.
And here I thought possession was 9/10s of the law. Someone lied to me.
Marijuana laws are not the problem in this case. It's the local police and Commonwealth Attorney overcharging their way to a softball lob that any defense attorney is going to knock the shit out of.
The marijuana laws are part of the problem.
There are certainly flaws in the execution, as someone who is out of town with lots of other people in their apartment for a party during their absence can surely claim to not have complete control of the space.
Yeah, but in this case you could have just as easily substituted a noise violation for the pot charge.
I'm not saying that there aren't excellent arguments on both sides of the marijuana issue, just that it's irrelevant in this case.
How you gonna study for a drug test?
According to some, it takes years of research.
Nah, usually only about a month
I think you're not including all the background research.
You're just including the final test preparation.
Dope
Going to be coming in the game riding high on emotion
Pretty head-spinning stuff.
Need some Doritos.
I hope he lights it up from 3 all game
He will, he's a stoned cold killer
Whoop whoop! Also, genius moves on the part of the administration. All handled well.
somehow this gif feels most appropriate...

Given what we know, common sense says he should play. He was not even in Va. when they found weed in his apartment. Glad common sense prevailed here. Beat Duke
Yeah.
Would really hate for people to jump the gun and make judgments about him without knowing all the facts, then go running to a message board to condemn him.
It was all smoke and mirrors.
Trial should be over by 4/20.
Great statement. Great job by Buzz, Whit, and especially Ty. This was clear cut. He was not there. Had he failed the drug test he would have been suspended. Ty took test, cleared his name.
What sucks is the number of articles that came out last night. There will be the same number that state he is going to play.
Hopefully there will be some journalistic integrity to report the details and get them right. ESPN's article was short on substance and details. It was no more than a nice headline for them. Hopefully they will do right by Ty and correct their story by including all the information and this latest statement from Buzz.
I hope Buzz and Whit are firm and strong in any future statements to fully back Ty. Would be even better if charges were dropped before the game tomorrow night.
It has begun.
As usual, Buzz is on it.
Yes, but they do not show or link to Buzz's full statement. It doesn't even touch on the fact that all this took place in Blacksburg, while Ty was in San Jose with the team. The world wide leader in sports should be able to report sports news better than this. By omitting critical details while being the most influential news source for sports, they are doing unjust damage to VT's image. Just a lack of integrity and no effort to be detailed and accurate.
If only he had blown out a shoe or something. /s
They traded this to be the TMZ of sports a looong time ago.
As expected, tbh. They can't suspend him because his roommates in Blacksburg smoked weed while he was in San Jose
Request to keep Outlaw's game motto: SMOKIN' TREES AND DRAININ" THREES
Edit because spelling is overrated
Smokin trees and strokin threes. Come on now.
Smokin' Js while Shootin' Js
modo = motto? mojo? what are you doing here
lol... quick typing will get afta'ya
This is now the nothing it always should have been. They were errand boys, sent by grocery clerks to enforce an ill-conceived law.
The bench celebrations for the Sweet 16 be like:
Sounds like the Blacksburg PD has some 'splainin to do.
Can we put in a FOIA to see their brackets? /s
Totally agree. The Blacksburg PD and Montgomery County DA should be put on trial for this travesty. What a total waste of taxpayer's money, and DA should be fired for such poor judgment.
Thank goodness. For a second there, I thought we had an outlaw on our team.
Already had multiple Duke fans come up to me upset about this news. They're scared.
The fear is justified.
and get this, a dookie tries to show that refs are biased against duke by giving an example from...this is the good part.... the UCF game!
Someone ought to show them a screenshot of Jalen Hudson getting fouled in 2015.
Duke wins and fans are still Super Salty. Shocked face at 11.
Tacko did get away with 2-3 obvious fouls, which is why I couldn't be too upset when he finally fouled out on a pretty weak contact. Refs gave him like 8 fouls to work with in that game.
GTFO with this logic
Fouls in basketball seem pretty random to me. It's as bad if not worse as pass interference calls in football. There's basically no consistency.
So you're saying we need instant replay for fouls.... s/
To his defense, fouls in college are annoyingly inconsistent and in a lot of cases very phantom. It is my biggest complaint again college hoops.
No replay though....we actually need less of it to be honest, this whole stopping the game to review an incidental contact because someone's holding their nose or mouth, and then assessing a Flagrant foul is straight garbage.
Appears to be shady/poorly handled work by B-burg police.
Buzz thinks Ty Outlaw may be due an apology after pot possession charge
This has created quite a buzz. It's not like it's outlawed or something! Either way coach buzz is high on this kid. I'm stoked!
They may not appreciate your puns, seth28. But I do. Leg
It was super late to throw them in the discussion but I try not to miss a chance at making them. I appreciate it!
We already had a pun sub thread rolling pretty well and this would've fit in nicely.
Got to listen to my local talk show (Syracuse fan area) discuss why Outlaw was playing unlike when Howard was suspended by Syracuse. Didnt understand how he could be playing when "he was busted with drugs in his pocket."
The media misinformation is pathetic. Howard failed a drug test. Outlaw got busted for his roommates' pot when he was out of town. Yeah - those are equal /s
The media can be fabulously dense.
Nuance matters, but they selectively drop or add incorrect details all the time.
And "I have to meet a deadline" is now often "how fast can I tweet".
Light em up tomorrow Ty!
Anyone else really feeling the need for some nacho fries right now?
Did you know it's possible to create new flavors if you combine two different types of Pringles?
My mouth is really dry...
This man can get the charges dropped
