Daniel Jones has flown up the draft boards. Rumors are that the Skins are trying to trade into the top 5 to get him before the Giants at 6. They have also been rumored to like Haskins as well.
No one knows what the Raiders are going to do as well. They could take a QB or just take another presumably defensive player at their spot.

Prediction: Murray is either going to be fantastic for a year and then fall back to earth (ie Robert Griffin and likely Lamar Jackson) or he will be a bust right out of the gate. I have a hard time believing that a skinny, run-first QB that is 5'10" in cleats will have longevity in the league.
(*Edit* Calling him a "run-first QB" isn't what I meant in this post. I used the incorrect terminology. What I meant was that he is a better runner than passer.)
The one QB that will have a long career is Will Grier, and it will mostly be spent as a back-up.

Murray is not a run first QB. He has the ability to run. If it wasn't for Tua we would be talking about how insane his completion percentage is as he beat the record set by Mayfield the year before.

At a minimum he is incredible at both, there's no doubting he has the arm talent. There are countless highlights of him throwing 50 yard ropes with perfect placement.
Watch the video and you'll see how he is able to do this and why Kliff wants him in Zona. He gets the system and knows how to throw to were the space is on the field.

I think he would be a perfect fit for Kliff in AZ. He wouldn't have to learn a brand new system, just the nuances of Kliff's which is becoming very prominent in the NFL these days.
My only concern is his longevity, as he is so small he could get injured easily if he doesn't protect his body in the NFL.

The NFL isn't about high arcing throws, or lobbing accurately into space. It is shorter, tight throws driven into very small spaces. I haven't seen those kind of throws on the type of intermediate move the chains type routes which NFL teams thrive on. I may be wrong, and I have been before (I thought Sam "Jon Kitna Jr" Darnold would be a bust because his mechanics were whacked out, but he was very good.)
I may end up being wrong. But to me, he is much more likely to be a bust than be a star. Hopefully, I am wrong and he invigorates football in the desert.

I think, as a GM, you have to understand not only this class, but also future classes when making decisions. To me, the high value positions in the NFL are: QB, LT, CB, DE, and DT.
This is a lousy class for top end QBs and pass blocking offensive tackles. Corner is a position I struggle with evaluating more than most, but I don't see many corners that blow me away. This is a draft where you load up on defensive line.
Poison Pills- picks who will get GMs fired
Murray- sorry, doesn't throw well enough, and while he is mobile, he isn't as mobile as Vick or Wilson
Haskins- Static pocket guy. I love his arm and you can't dismiss his productivity. However, is he Big Ben, or is he Byron Leftwich? His release is a little slow. He isn't mobile in the pocket, despite being a good runner. And I don't know, given tOSU's very simplified passing game system, how good his reads are. To me, he isn't a guy you use a first rounder on.
Devin White- I don't care how good he is. You don't draft an inside linebacker with a first round pick.
Jawaan Taylor- He looks the part, but doesn't play the part. His fundamentals are doo-doo. Think the Koundijo kid who came out of Alabama. He looked like Tarzan, but got whipped by JR Collins head to head all night. Collins didn't even end up as an Arena League starter.
Rashaun Gary- another guy with all the talent, but wants to be an edge guy and not a one gap DT. He isn't an edge guy. To me, he is a more hyped Andrew Brown.
Christian Wilkins- he got more attention than he deserves because of how he was used offensively. Dexter Lawrence was the guy who made Clemson's DL go. I think Wilkins will be serviceable, but he won't be a difference maker. Lawrence is higher risk, but if he is in shape, he is a difference maker.
Clenlin Farrell- Heck of a player and a Virginia kid who was almost a Hokies. He has a potential chronic knee issue which I think could derail him. Also, Clemson, like Alabama, makes it tough to evaluate kids. They have so much talent around them that they never have to overcome scheme adjustments (like double teams) in college. Call it the Matt Leinert effect for defensive linemen. I hope I am wrong because I have only heard good things about the kid.
The high value picks:
Dexter Lawrence- if you need a two gap DT, he is your guy. He is more talented than Williams from Alabama. Weight and performance enhancers hurt his standing.
Brian Burns- this is a situational pick. If you can take him as a 3rd down pass rushing edge guy with his hand down, he is a terrific pick. If you are taking him to be a 3-4 OLB, he has speed but looks lost a bunch. To me, I play him as a 4-3 end and deal with some of his lack of size against the run.
Zach Allen from Boston College- he was the best player on film VT played this year, slightly edging out Jerry Tillery. Both guys will be high value and have good careers as one gap DTs. Allen could also play a 3-4 five tech, which is why I mentioned him first. Tillery could be a star, but Allen, in the right situation, is a guy who will become a real fixture for some team.

Josh Allen- I don't know if you can say "high value" about a consensus Top 5 guy. I love Allen's film- think a bigger, stronger, faster version of Trevon Hill with more production. He plays with great speed and uses leverage really well. I like him as a nickel DE and a 3-4 OLB who you try to keep out of coverage. If a 3-4 team drafts him and he is out chasing receivers like Burns from FSU was two years ago, that coach should be kicked in the balls.
Finally, I am rooting hard for Ricky Walker. I think his best fit with be as a 3-4 five technique where his size and mobility can be leveraged effectively. I really hope a team which has a history of using big DEs from a 3-4 (Belicheck anyone?) pulls the trigger on him. I think he played hurt this year, and it really hurt his stock.

I was reading an article about cost vs production in the NFL. QB, Oline, and DL are what you need to take in first round due to the contract structure. LB was next, but grouped OLB and ILB, which is probably driven up by pass rushing OLBs. CB was a break even position, basically CBs get paid what they are worth. WR and RB were the worst and you should take them first round because you can get cheap production from those positions.
Everyone can see that LT, QB and DE get paid thr most, but a lot of times that's tied to what people think and not what is actually true. But in terms of players actual playing capability verse the salaries of was quite interesting top watch the data play out.

Yes, because of the pre-determined rookie salary slots, you are getting better positional value taking a pass rusher in the top-five than a RB. This is why even though I love my Giants having Saquon, I did not love my Giants taking Saquon when the next few picks went QB, CB, DE, G, QB.

I have done a Analytical analysis that they should probably only keep him for 2 more seasons past his rookie contract. If they make him the #1 paid guy the production from the position dips significantly.
So if you are real smart about drafting a RB high, it makes no sense to extend them and pay them.

The thinking on ILBs is changing if they are good enough in coverage. Having a player on defense who isnt a liability when your james whites and david johnsons motion out as receivers is huge for a defense and is only going to be more importsnt as time goes.

I can acknowledge that. The game is always changing. But, I still haven't seen an ILB who means the difference between Ws and Ls yet. Even LK in Carolina is a guy who, if he is out, the defense isn't going to take a huge leap backwards. Pass rush, dominance at DT, and press man win championships.

Kuechly is a LB though, White is an athlete. White is super faster and excellent and shedding blocks, but he can't tackle (which can be taught) and he doesnt read plays very well. He is out of position a lot, even on his highlights. He makes up for it in college due to his speed. That's got to be a huge worry. Though he has only played LB for 3-4 years.

Same issue I have with all Bama defenders. There is so much talent that offenses can't scheme against one guy. All the DL Bama has produced recently have been quietly solid players. You don't use a top pick on "quietly solid."
I didn't know anything about the foot injury for Lawrence (I tune out to NFL stuff.) I am evading based on what I have watched. Lawrence, before the weight gain, would have been my top pick. He hurt himself with the weight gain, which limited his effectiveness. So his stock fell.

Isn't that also a question with Lawrence? I mean the Clemson D line has just as much, if not more talent.
I think the reason why Lawrence is valued so much lower is that he's a nose tackle, which is a dying position in the NFL. He has some pass rush upside, but if you're drafting an interior lineman early, teams are going to want pass rush and three down production.

Clemson DL last season was definitely superior. Isaiah Buggs was productive but less talented than previous Bama ends and Raekwon Davis had a disappointing season that led to his return for this season. Quinnen was double teamed a lot and I watched him beat a lot of double teams with incredible power, and skill, particularly the way he used his arms. Clemson's DL was better overall and deeper with guys like Xavier Thomas and Albert Huggins for starter-level depth. Just how things play out. Bama was unusually thin at DL and rush OLB (bad injury luck) last year. Just the nature of attrition in CFB.
I don't claim to be an expert, but he was the most talented (And productive at nose) Bama DL I can remember in the Saban era. His hype is justified for me, especially since his size and play style would allow him to transition well into a 4-3 as a 3 tech if that's where he ended up. He wasn't the traditional, massive 2 gap Nose like a Terrance Cody or Vince Wilfork.

Raekwon played 5t DE, but it can be misleading based on their alignments. After 2014 Saban added a lot of different looks and pass rush alignments so it can be easy to think Raekwon is on the inside based on how the Jack or Rush OLB lines up beside them. Raekwon certainly has the size of a traditional nose.

In the NFL, he has to be a corner. He doesn't have the range to be a safety, and not sure if he has the quick hips to be a nickel. I don't think I would be in a rush to take him, but as the draft progresses and need arises, he may be a good system fit who can also help on teams.

I think Murray is the best QB in the draft and will be a very good player, but Arizona could pull a Carolina move a la Jimmy Clausen/Cam Newton and still come out ahead. I am sure they want to trade down, but I don't think the Giants are willing to make the moves to come up to first overall. I don't know if there is another team that wants/needs a QB bad enough. Dolphins? Broncos?

Third: I had to sit through and watch that monstrosity of a season and watch Clausen's throw three touchdowns......THREE! Mel Kiper technically should of retired by now after his statement about him. His stats make Rosen look like a Pro Bowler.

Gettleman is an Old School, Throwback Scout who somehow stumbled into multiple general manager positions by talking about Old School, Throwback Football things like Toughness And Grit. While there's something to be said for having a locker room that actually likes each other (e.g. getting rid of Eli Apple and Bobby Hart, etc), the idea of Building A Culture and Getting Our Guys In The Building is way overrated in team building relative to other things like, say, Having Talent, An Effective Scheme, and Maximizing Assets.
Not to mention saying things like "Football evolves. The game evolves. The style of play evolves. But there are three truths that have not changed and will not change. OK? You have to run the ball. You have to stop the run. And you have to rush the passer."

TJ Hockenson is the closest thing the league has seen to Gronk since he got drafted. I know Gronk's recieving numbers were down this past year but he was dominant in the running game. I don't think people know how rare it is to find a TE that can be a gamechanger blocking and recieving. Thats why it cracks me up seeing Kelce mentioned as the best TE in the league. Dude doesn't like blocking. Having a guy that can do both completely changes an offense. Not surprised to see Patricia take TJ after how hard they apparently tried to trade for Gronk last year.

Panthers fanbase seems pretty divided on the Brian Burns pick, but personally I like it. He came to the combine relatively beefed up and still maintained his athleticism. Rivera says he's going to take a bigger role with a defense this year, and as the DC in San Diego he used a lot of 3-4 fronts. Rumor is that Carolina is going to transition to a more hybrid front this year and we had basically zero edge rushers capable of handling the OLB role in a 3-4 before signing Bruce Irvin and making this pick. Burns produced well on a bad team. I'm excited about his speed.
Lot of people wanted OL, but I don't see many worth reaching for in this draft. Figure Hurney will go after Greg Little in the 2nd.

I've seen people more positive than negative about the pick. I like it personally, especially considering that he has a bigger frame than Everette Brown(a lot of people are comparing the two, only thing they have in common is they both went to FSU) and he can add weight. I'm expecting Burns and Haynes to be the two "Screaming Eagles" off the edge..
I'm still trying to decided if they should go with OL or S in the second round...i didnt think Adderly would make it to the 2nd round...but he's my second favorite safety next to Savage..

My interest in the NFL is way down from years ago but as a kind of Skins fan I think they did well. I would prefer Rosen over Haskins but wanted Sweat at 15 and to trade 2 2nds for Rosen so all in all winding up with Sweat and Haskins for 2 2nds is pretty close to what I was hoping for. Im guessing tye Cardinals wanted way too much for Rosen, otherwise he would be traded by now.

They really should have traded out of that #1 pick and made a go with Rosen to at least see if he could play a bit. That Cardinals team is BAD and the kid had no chance last year (bad coach, bad O line, when your best receiver is shell of his former self Fitzgerald). They have way too many holes they need to fill and I'm not sure QB was one of them at #1.
But its all good, I do not like nor do I cheer for the Cards, so if they keep stinking I am fine with it.

Went to bed around pick 25 or so, only to wake up and find out Atlanta had moved back up into the first, ending up with the best OG in the draft and a solid OT, at the cost of both Day 2 picks. And with reports that they are planning to trade back up into the third with some of their seven (!) Day 3 picks, if they do that and get an EDGE or CB, I think I'll be okay about the top half of the draft.
Having a solid OL for once is going to be a game changer.

Found a great article about McGarry, the OT the Falcons moved back into the first round to get, and why (a) he fits well in the Falcons' scheme, and (b) his ceiling may be higher than some evaluators may realize. Lots of interesting OL evaluation that talks about going against conventional wisdom on tackle technique. Would love to see French's take on this OL evaluation.
And as I'm posting this, the folks on SiriusXM's NFL channel are talking about how the Falcons nailed the first round, and got two guys that can start for the next ten years, as long as the Falcons can pay them.

I'm not really sold on him, he does one thing really well, get the ball out of his hand very quickly. This will help him do well if his coaches realize that.
He is very raw as a QB. He has 1 year starting, which doesn't bode well for gifs NFL career. He got baited into too many bad throws, which comes with practice, he didn't audible, Ryan Day did that for him. With his lack of athleticism compared to most of the QBs drafted in the first round, I would want to see more from reading defenses, he doesn't really have the mobility to escape the pocket and make something happen when the play breaks down, so he has to read the defense to bail out of the play.
Only 3 QBs were first round draft picks than were slower than him, Patrick Ramsey (skins) , Sexy Rexy (bears), and Phillip Rivers (drafted by New York).

I would like to see one draft board of a respected draft analyst that had either Haskins or Sweat outside the top half of the first round. By any measure you want to use.. the skins knocked the first round out of the park. Most analysts seem to agree with that. And I am usually extremely critical of our drafting habits.

Most people felt that Haskins would go in the top 10, just because he's one of the top (at least 3) in the class. But many analysts had a 2nd rd grade on him. Doesn't mean he's a bad pick.
A lot of people were saying Sweat would slide due to his heart condition, so back half of the first or earl second was expected. I would say the Redskins had a good draft. They got two potentially very good players, which you should do if you have 2 first round picks. That being said, they didn't have to give up too much to get the extra pick. But it's not like they had a home run day 1.

Apparently, he popped on film while we were reviewing the Clemson DL because he played so well against them. I would probably prefer they pick Lock, just so the Cards get left hanging with Rosen. If what MMQB is reporting is true, they didn't start actively shopping Rosen until just before picking Murray. If that's true (and given the state of the Cards' roster), Keim should be fired.

Did anyone else think it was really awkward and borderline inappropriate how much time ESPN spent last night dissecting the domestic violence incident with Jeffrey Simmons? Obviously his actions are inexcusable and are worth mentioning, but he was the only person all night who didn't have one highlight shown of him and barely even had a positive comment made about him (Booger did mention towards the end of that segment that he had a lot of people in his corner from his time at Miss. State). After the Titans selected him, they almost immediately showed the video from the incident, which happened almost 4 years ago. The guy made multiple appearances on the SEC All-Academic team and kept his nose completely clean during his time in Starkville. I felt bad for the kid - you wait your whole life for your draft moment, only to see yourself selected in front of all your friends and family members who have to sit idly by watching ESPN dissect an incident from over 3 years ago instead of talking about your talent and what you might be bringing to the league. There are what, 7 minutes roughly between picks, and ESPN couldn't find one moment to mention your abilities?? I know they won't issue an apology, but honestly feel like he deserves one. I hope the man balls the fuck out on a MNF game, they come up to him for a postgame interview and he just walks off without saying a word. Again, I understand the importance of at least mentioning the incident when he gets drafted because hitting a woman is/was a horrible decision and it provides context, along with his torn ACL, as to why a top 10 talent fell to #19. But this was over the top and was a big example, in my opinion, of why people hate ESPN.

I think it's primarily; size and build, then some intangibles. He's got a clean smart head and seems to read the field well, his downfall was having concrete walls for receivers and a wet paper bag OL. I never thought he was #6 talent but he could prove to be a consistent mildly successful NFL starter

Goes to show you how off Beamers last years of recruiting were bad Fuente has been at keeping Beamer's best recruits on the team.
Tim Settle, Adonis Alexander, Terrell Edmunds and Tremaine Edmunds all could have been on last year's team. Would have been a pretty good draft for the Hokies.

I'm just saying, there were actually some really talented players in Beamer's last couple of recruiting classes. It's just that they are already in the NFL. I know they all had their reasons, but if they were on the team in 2018, we're probably playing Clemson for the ACC title.

But Settle was a fifth round pick in 2018. He would likely have made more money with his signing bonus alone this spring than he made in salary+signing bonus ($480k + $268k) in 2018 if he had stuck around and been a 2nd or 3rd rounder. He lost money by leaving when he did.
Adonis definitely would have made more overall money this year than he made ($168k signing bonus) by coming out in 2018.
There's a lesson here kids: Hit the books. It's not that hard to stay academically eligible.

I watched the first quarter of the Duke vs VT game yesterday. Jones made some really nice plays. He had two drops on deep balls and made some nice NFL throws to his second or third read against zones. The bad decision was trying to force the throw with Ladler in his face. His receivers really struggled to get open, but he gave them the best chance to make a play. I don't know if Jones will end up being a great NFL QB, but I think he will be better than people are predicting. I feel similarly about Haskins. I just don't think I, if I was a GM, would have sold the farm this year to find my franchise QB.

Daniel Jones has flown up the draft boards. Rumors are that the Skins are trying to trade into the top 5 to get him before the Giants at 6. They have also been rumored to like Haskins as well.
No one knows what the Raiders are going to do as well. They could take a QB or just take another presumably defensive player at their spot.

Prediction: Murray is either going to be fantastic for a year and then fall back to earth (ie Robert Griffin and likely Lamar Jackson) or he will be a bust right out of the gate. I have a hard time believing that a skinny, run-first QB that is 5'10" in cleats will have longevity in the league.
(*Edit* Calling him a "run-first QB" isn't what I meant in this post. I used the incorrect terminology. What I meant was that he is a better runner than passer.)
The one QB that will have a long career is Will Grier, and it will mostly be spent as a back-up.
Murray is not a run first QB. He has the ability to run. If it wasn't for Tua we would be talking about how insane his completion percentage is as he beat the record set by Mayfield the year before.
So, is the completion percentage due to the QB or the system he was in? All I know is that when I see "highlights" of Murray I see a lot of running and not a lot of tight spirals into tight windows or NFL caliber throws.
He throws great into spaces, and yes he has an accurate strong arm. He can throw the ball with a flick of a wrist AND he is accurate.

At a minimum he is incredible at both, there's no doubting he has the arm talent. There are countless highlights of him throwing 50 yard ropes with perfect placement.
Watch the video and you'll see how he is able to do this and why Kliff wants him in Zona. He gets the system and knows how to throw to were the space is on the field.

I think he would be a perfect fit for Kliff in AZ. He wouldn't have to learn a brand new system, just the nuances of Kliff's which is becoming very prominent in the NFL these days.
My only concern is his longevity, as he is so small he could get injured easily if he doesn't protect his body in the NFL.
The NFL isn't about high arcing throws, or lobbing accurately into space. It is shorter, tight throws driven into very small spaces. I haven't seen those kind of throws on the type of intermediate move the chains type routes which NFL teams thrive on. I may be wrong, and I have been before (I thought Sam "Jon Kitna Jr" Darnold would be a bust because his mechanics were whacked out, but he was very good.)
I may end up being wrong. But to me, he is much more likely to be a bust than be a star. Hopefully, I am wrong and he invigorates football in the desert.
When you are talking Darnold's mechanics are you talking about his feet placement. There was a ton of talk about that last year?
From what I have read, that's what makes him a special QB. When things get bad in his legs, he can still throw the ball accurately.
Didn't reset his feet well after moving in the pocket, and had a very long delivery. He tightened it up and looked pretty good.
I think, as a GM, you have to understand not only this class, but also future classes when making decisions. To me, the high value positions in the NFL are: QB, LT, CB, DE, and DT.
This is a lousy class for top end QBs and pass blocking offensive tackles. Corner is a position I struggle with evaluating more than most, but I don't see many corners that blow me away. This is a draft where you load up on defensive line.
Poison Pills- picks who will get GMs fired
Murray- sorry, doesn't throw well enough, and while he is mobile, he isn't as mobile as Vick or Wilson
Haskins- Static pocket guy. I love his arm and you can't dismiss his productivity. However, is he Big Ben, or is he Byron Leftwich? His release is a little slow. He isn't mobile in the pocket, despite being a good runner. And I don't know, given tOSU's very simplified passing game system, how good his reads are. To me, he isn't a guy you use a first rounder on.
Devin White- I don't care how good he is. You don't draft an inside linebacker with a first round pick.
Jawaan Taylor- He looks the part, but doesn't play the part. His fundamentals are doo-doo. Think the Koundijo kid who came out of Alabama. He looked like Tarzan, but got whipped by JR Collins head to head all night. Collins didn't even end up as an Arena League starter.
Rashaun Gary- another guy with all the talent, but wants to be an edge guy and not a one gap DT. He isn't an edge guy. To me, he is a more hyped Andrew Brown.
Christian Wilkins- he got more attention than he deserves because of how he was used offensively. Dexter Lawrence was the guy who made Clemson's DL go. I think Wilkins will be serviceable, but he won't be a difference maker. Lawrence is higher risk, but if he is in shape, he is a difference maker.
Clenlin Farrell- Heck of a player and a Virginia kid who was almost a Hokies. He has a potential chronic knee issue which I think could derail him. Also, Clemson, like Alabama, makes it tough to evaluate kids. They have so much talent around them that they never have to overcome scheme adjustments (like double teams) in college. Call it the Matt Leinert effect for defensive linemen. I hope I am wrong because I have only heard good things about the kid.
The high value picks:
Dexter Lawrence- if you need a two gap DT, he is your guy. He is more talented than Williams from Alabama. Weight and performance enhancers hurt his standing.
Brian Burns- this is a situational pick. If you can take him as a 3rd down pass rushing edge guy with his hand down, he is a terrific pick. If you are taking him to be a 3-4 OLB, he has speed but looks lost a bunch. To me, I play him as a 4-3 end and deal with some of his lack of size against the run.
Zach Allen from Boston College- he was the best player on film VT played this year, slightly edging out Jerry Tillery. Both guys will be high value and have good careers as one gap DTs. Allen could also play a 3-4 five tech, which is why I mentioned him first. Tillery could be a star, but Allen, in the right situation, is a guy who will become a real fixture for some team.

Josh Allen- I don't know if you can say "high value" about a consensus Top 5 guy. I love Allen's film- think a bigger, stronger, faster version of Trevon Hill with more production. He plays with great speed and uses leverage really well. I like him as a nickel DE and a 3-4 OLB who you try to keep out of coverage. If a 3-4 team drafts him and he is out chasing receivers like Burns from FSU was two years ago, that coach should be kicked in the balls.
Finally, I am rooting hard for Ricky Walker. I think his best fit with be as a 3-4 five technique where his size and mobility can be leveraged effectively. I really hope a team which has a history of using big DEs from a 3-4 (Belicheck anyone?) pulls the trigger on him. I think he played hurt this year, and it really hurt his stock.

Just mine. I am sure most GMs probably have a different take. But if you are good at those positions, you can be very average at others and still win a ton of games.
I was reading an article about cost vs production in the NFL. QB, Oline, and DL are what you need to take in first round due to the contract structure. LB was next, but grouped OLB and ILB, which is probably driven up by pass rushing OLBs. CB was a break even position, basically CBs get paid what they are worth. WR and RB were the worst and you should take them first round because you can get cheap production from those positions.
Everyone can see that LT, QB and DE get paid thr most, but a lot of times that's tied to what people think and not what is actually true. But in terms of players actual playing capability verse the salaries of was quite interesting top watch the data play out.
Yes, because of the pre-determined rookie salary slots, you are getting better positional value taking a pass rusher in the top-five than a RB. This is why even though I love my Giants having Saquon, I did not love my Giants taking Saquon when the next few picks went QB, CB, DE, G, QB.
I have done a Analytical analysis that they should probably only keep him for 2 more seasons past his rookie contract. If they make him the #1 paid guy the production from the position dips significantly.
So if you are real smart about drafting a RB high, it makes no sense to extend them and pay them.
The thinking on ILBs is changing if they are good enough in coverage. Having a player on defense who isnt a liability when your james whites and david johnsons motion out as receivers is huge for a defense and is only going to be more importsnt as time goes.
I can acknowledge that. The game is always changing. But, I still haven't seen an ILB who means the difference between Ws and Ls yet. Even LK in Carolina is a guy who, if he is out, the defense isn't going to take a huge leap backwards. Pass rush, dominance at DT, and press man win championships.
Having seen the Carolina defense when Luke was having concussion issues, I'd have to disagree there.
Absolutely. Kuechly is the QB of that defense and seems to know what play is coming before everyone gets out of the huddle.
Kuechly is a LB though, White is an athlete. White is super faster and excellent and shedding blocks, but he can't tackle (which can be taught) and he doesnt read plays very well. He is out of position a lot, even on his highlights. He makes up for it in college due to his speed. That's got to be a huge worry. Though he has only played LB for 3-4 years.

Dude had like 20 TFL and I believe double digit sacks playing nose in a 3-4. I watched him play many times last year and he was a menace always.

Same issue I have with all Bama defenders. There is so much talent that offenses can't scheme against one guy. All the DL Bama has produced recently have been quietly solid players. You don't use a top pick on "quietly solid."
I didn't know anything about the foot injury for Lawrence (I tune out to NFL stuff.) I am evading based on what I have watched. Lawrence, before the weight gain, would have been my top pick. He hurt himself with the weight gain, which limited his effectiveness. So his stock fell.
Isn't that also a question with Lawrence? I mean the Clemson D line has just as much, if not more talent.
I think the reason why Lawrence is valued so much lower is that he's a nose tackle, which is a dying position in the NFL. He has some pass rush upside, but if you're drafting an interior lineman early, teams are going to want pass rush and three down production.
Clemson DL last season was definitely superior. Isaiah Buggs was productive but less talented than previous Bama ends and Raekwon Davis had a disappointing season that led to his return for this season. Quinnen was double teamed a lot and I watched him beat a lot of double teams with incredible power, and skill, particularly the way he used his arms. Clemson's DL was better overall and deeper with guys like Xavier Thomas and Albert Huggins for starter-level depth. Just how things play out. Bama was unusually thin at DL and rush OLB (bad injury luck) last year. Just the nature of attrition in CFB.
I don't claim to be an expert, but he was the most talented (And productive at nose) Bama DL I can remember in the Saban era. His hype is justified for me, especially since his size and play style would allow him to transition well into a 4-3 as a 3 tech if that's where he ended up. He wasn't the traditional, massive 2 gap Nose like a Terrance Cody or Vince Wilfork.
Oh for sure, he's a better 3T fit. I thought Raekwon Davis played nose for Alabama last year anyway. But I could be wrong
Raekwon played 5t DE, but it can be misleading based on their alignments. After 2014 Saban added a lot of different looks and pass rush alignments so it can be easy to think Raekwon is on the inside based on how the Jack or Rush OLB lines up beside them. Raekwon certainly has the size of a traditional nose.
Dexter Lawrence has a potentially chronic foot issue, which can be even worse than a knee, especially for a guy who plays at 340-350. I'd take Quinnen Williams over any DL in this class all day.

In the NFL, he has to be a corner. He doesn't have the range to be a safety, and not sure if he has the quick hips to be a nickel. I don't think I would be in a rush to take him, but as the draft progresses and need arises, he may be a good system fit who can also help on teams.
I could see him being a late round flyer. I wonder what his stats were like at the Junior College he was at last season.

Gettleman is an Old School, Throwback Scout who somehow stumbled into multiple general manager positions by talking about Old School, Throwback Football things like Toughness And Grit. While there's something to be said for having a locker room that actually likes each other (e.g. getting rid of Eli Apple and Bobby Hart, etc), the idea of Building A Culture and Getting Our Guys In The Building is way overrated in team building relative to other things like, say, Having Talent, An Effective Scheme, and Maximizing Assets.

TJ Hockenson is the closest thing the league has seen to Gronk since he got drafted. I know Gronk's recieving numbers were down this past year but he was dominant in the running game. I don't think people know how rare it is to find a TE that can be a gamechanger blocking and recieving. Thats why it cracks me up seeing Kelce mentioned as the best TE in the league. Dude doesn't like blocking. Having a guy that can do both completely changes an offense. Not surprised to see Patricia take TJ after how hard they apparently tried to trade for Gronk last year.

Rivera says he's going to take a bigger role with a defense this year, and as the DC in San Diego he used a lot of 3-4 fronts. Rumor is that Carolina is going to transition to a more hybrid front this year and we had basically zero edge rushers capable of handling the OLB role in a 3-4 before signing Bruce Irvin and making this pick. Burns produced well on a bad team. I'm excited about his speed.
Lot of people wanted OL, but I don't see many worth reaching for in this draft. Figure Hurney will go after Greg Little in the 2nd.
I've seen people more positive than negative about the pick. I like it personally, especially considering that he has a bigger frame than Everette Brown(a lot of people are comparing the two, only thing they have in common is they both went to FSU) and he can add weight. I'm expecting Burns and Haynes to be the two "Screaming Eagles" off the edge..
I'm still trying to decided if they should go with OL or S in the second round...i didnt think Adderly would make it to the 2nd round...but he's my second favorite safety next to Savage..
Hoping Burns can fill the Frank Clark/Dee Ford mold for us. Think he's still a little raw, but I'm expecting him to be a serious contributor by year 3.

My interest in the NFL is way down from years ago but as a kind of Skins fan I think they did well. I would prefer Rosen over Haskins but wanted Sweat at 15 and to trade 2 2nds for Rosen so all in all winding up with Sweat and Haskins for 2 2nds is pretty close to what I was hoping for. Im guessing tye Cardinals wanted way too much for Rosen, otherwise he would be traded by now.
And now they will get next to nothing for him, as there is no team that's gonna give them a big trade package for a guy they already know the Cardinals can't keep.
They really should have traded out of that #1 pick and made a go with Rosen to at least see if he could play a bit. That Cardinals team is BAD and the kid had no chance last year (bad coach, bad O line, when your best receiver is shell of his former self Fitzgerald). They have way too many holes they need to fill and I'm not sure QB was one of them at #1.
But its all good, I do not like nor do I cheer for the Cards, so if they keep stinking I am fine with it.
Went to bed around pick 25 or so, only to wake up and find out Atlanta had moved back up into the first, ending up with the best OG in the draft and a solid OT, at the cost of both Day 2 picks. And with reports that they are planning to trade back up into the third with some of their seven (!) Day 3 picks, if they do that and get an EDGE or CB, I think I'll be okay about the top half of the draft.
Having a solid OL for once is going to be a game changer.
Found a great article about McGarry, the OT the Falcons moved back into the first round to get, and why (a) he fits well in the Falcons' scheme, and (b) his ceiling may be higher than some evaluators may realize. Lots of interesting OL evaluation that talks about going against conventional wisdom on tackle technique. Would love to see French's take on this OL evaluation.

I'm not really sold on him, he does one thing really well, get the ball out of his hand very quickly. This will help him do well if his coaches realize that.
He is very raw as a QB. He has 1 year starting, which doesn't bode well for gifs NFL career. He got baited into too many bad throws, which comes with practice, he didn't audible, Ryan Day did that for him. With his lack of athleticism compared to most of the QBs drafted in the first round, I would want to see more from reading defenses, he doesn't really have the mobility to escape the pocket and make something happen when the play breaks down, so he has to read the defense to bail out of the play.
Only 3 QBs were first round draft picks than were slower than him, Patrick Ramsey (skins) , Sexy Rexy (bears), and Phillip Rivers (drafted by New York).
I would like to see one draft board of a respected draft analyst that had either Haskins or Sweat outside the top half of the first round. By any measure you want to use.. the skins knocked the first round out of the park. Most analysts seem to agree with that. And I am usually extremely critical of our drafting habits.
Most people felt that Haskins would go in the top 10, just because he's one of the top (at least 3) in the class. But many analysts had a 2nd rd grade on him. Doesn't mean he's a bad pick.
A lot of people were saying Sweat would slide due to his heart condition, so back half of the first or earl second was expected. I would say the Redskins had a good draft. They got two potentially very good players, which you should do if you have 2 first round picks. That being said, they didn't have to give up too much to get the extra pick. But it's not like they had a home run day 1.
Usually, the best OT in the draft doesn't fall to the 22nd pick. The Eagles have to be ecstatic.
Still cannot believe that Minnesota drafted a C in the first round.
There are a few fans that arnt too happy, but I love that pick.
Top talent and a position of need without having to reach. That's all you can really ask for when you are picking in the 20s+
We need a ton of help on the OL, if we felt he was the best interior lineman available at that spot I'm okay with it. Apparently, he popped on film while we were reviewing the Clemson DL because he played so well against them. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised to see us take the best OT available with our 2nd round pick.

I would probably prefer they pick Lock, just so the Cards get left hanging with Rosen. If what MMQB is reporting is true, they didn't start actively shopping Rosen until just before picking Murray. If that's true (and given the state of the Cards' roster), Keim should be fired.

It sucks to play on a terrible team and get the boot after one year where you're clearly not the problem.
Did anyone else think it was really awkward and borderline inappropriate how much time ESPN spent last night dissecting the domestic violence incident with Jeffrey Simmons? Obviously his actions are inexcusable and are worth mentioning, but he was the only person all night who didn't have one highlight shown of him and barely even had a positive comment made about him (Booger did mention towards the end of that segment that he had a lot of people in his corner from his time at Miss. State). After the Titans selected him, they almost immediately showed the video from the incident, which happened almost 4 years ago. The guy made multiple appearances on the SEC All-Academic team and kept his nose completely clean during his time in Starkville. I felt bad for the kid - you wait your whole life for your draft moment, only to see yourself selected in front of all your friends and family members who have to sit idly by watching ESPN dissect an incident from over 3 years ago instead of talking about your talent and what you might be bringing to the league. There are what, 7 minutes roughly between picks, and ESPN couldn't find one moment to mention your abilities?? I know they won't issue an apology, but honestly feel like he deserves one. I hope the man balls the fuck out on a MNF game, they come up to him for a postgame interview and he just walks off without saying a word. Again, I understand the importance of at least mentioning the incident when he gets drafted because hitting a woman is/was a horrible decision and it provides context, along with his torn ACL, as to why a top 10 talent fell to #19. But this was over the top and was a big example, in my opinion, of why people hate ESPN.

Yes, the whole thing made me feel super uncomfortable. Just as you said, the immediate action to jump right into the video, the amount of time spent on it, etc. was disturbing.
TheRinger also abstained from grading the pick because of the conviction. At the same time, though, if you don't want to wear a reputation of being a woman beater for the rest of your life, the two key things to avoid are (a) beating women and (b) being in the public eye.
Everyone in the public eye is a woman beater, wow things make so much more sense!

I think it's primarily; size and build, then some intangibles. He's got a clean smart head and seems to read the field well, his downfall was having concrete walls for receivers and a wet paper bag OL. I never thought he was #6 talent but he could prove to be a consistent mildly successful NFL starter

Tim Settle, Adonis Alexander, Terrell Edmunds and Tremaine Edmunds all could have been on last year's team. Would have been a pretty good draft for the Hokies.
Adonis failed his first year on campus he has nothing but praise for the coaches and support staff trying to keep him eligible. The other three guys weren't staying on campus for more time than they did, two of them were first round talents.

You're definitely right about the Edmundi.
But Settle was a fifth round pick in 2018. He would likely have made more money with his signing bonus alone this spring than he made in salary+signing bonus ($480k + $268k) in 2018 if he had stuck around and been a 2nd or 3rd rounder. He lost money by leaving when he did.
Adonis definitely would have made more overall money this year than he made ($168k signing bonus) by coming out in 2018.
There's a lesson here kids: Hit the books. It's not that hard to stay academically eligible.

I watched the first quarter of the Duke vs VT game yesterday. Jones made some really nice plays. He had two drops on deep balls and made some nice NFL throws to his second or third read against zones. The bad decision was trying to force the throw with Ladler in his face. His receivers really struggled to get open, but he gave them the best chance to make a play. I don't know if Jones will end up being a great NFL QB, but I think he will be better than people are predicting. I feel similarly about Haskins. I just don't think I, if I was a GM, would have sold the farm this year to find my franchise QB.
