Chill out on Logan Thomas. Stop hating on him. Frank Beamer has been coaching this team since before a few people hanging around here were born. I imagine he's watched a quarterback or two. If you think that Coach Beamer wouldn't put the best kid on the team under center, you have psychological problems. Go rake leaves and give football a break.
The Hokies have no running game...except for Logan Thomas. Offensive success in football starts with being multi-dimensional. In order to be successful on offense, you kind of need to give the impression that you can run AND pass. The problem with LT right now is that he is a total headcase. He's had to carry this offense on his back since last year. The main problem is that we do not have a legitimate homerun threat on this team. Don't any of you remember 2011? I do. It was all LT 3:16, Logan the Tank, or whatever other sunshine and lollipops shit EVERYBODY was gushing about. The only difference between 2011 Logan, and Today Logan was David Wilson. I know Danny Coale and Boykin were there also, but they were not the homerun threat that Wilson was. Teams were not game planning for Danny Coale in 2011. They were game planning for David Wilson. That is not a small deal. That is a huge deal.
Yes...LT fucked up today. He tried to force some stuff that wasn't there and cost the team some points. BUT if he's not in there, Boston College stomps the Hokies. Period. There is no debate.
The defense gave away a TD today also. That 62 yd run was all on our vaulted secondary. They got sucked up WAY too far, and everybody all of sudden became allergic to tackling.
I do not think LT is Tom Brady. But I'm with Coach Frank on this one. He gives us the best chance to win. Support the team, people. Still lots to play for. Payback tour resumes next weekend. #fuckthecanes.

Agreed 100% - does Logan deserve criticism? Sure. Especially for that pick-6 (it was just terrible). Is he the root cause of our offensive ineptitude? Hell no. A dearth of playmakers is the root cause, and that goes back to recruiting, I guess.
Would we all be this forgiving if our defense wasn't as stellar? We would be fighting to stay .500- proof: put last years defense on this years' team and the bowl streak ends.
I love Logan as much as the next guy (well...looking through some of these threads....maybe not...). Your statement is pretty true, we have no home run threat. But we can't have a home run threat if we only hand off the ball to our top 2 running threats 9 times in a game....
I don't know who's fault that is, but hell, we were never down by more than 7 points until the end of the game, run the fucking ball with someone other than the QB!
Yeah, I agree. Edmunds needs way more carries. He looked like a stud out there when he was getting touches. What's the hang up?
1.7ypc isn't something to write home about, though the called back big run would've helped. That said he seems much better when not forced to run the tradition and inverted veer as French has pointed out. Really wish I understood why we don't run more from under center.

Does anybody see a trend here? In the past 4 weeks the Hokies have gotten revenge on the two teams that beat them last year and have lost to two teams they beat last year. Well I guess that means we'll definitely beat Miami then.
Crap, would this mean a loss to the hoos?
Crap is right. Hopefully they end up like GT, having high hopes before the game and looking to beat us for the first time in a while and then our defense goes out there and crushes that hope.
38-0, bros!
we beat GT both years
Iv been trying to tell people this since last season DW home run threat let Logan thrive through 2011. I have been one of Logan's biggest supporters throughout his career. He gives us the best chance to win hes a beast when the entire offense does their job and the WRs catch the easy balls they constantly drop (im looking at you Knowles) or the O-line breaks down and Logan has to run for his life. Some here on TKP say hes the worst QB in VT history but the record books say otherwise as he owns almost every QB record for Virginia Tech. Look I dont get to go to games very often as a matter of fact I have only been to 5 games total, I went to the 2011 Miami game Oct 8 2011 my 25th Birthday I spent 60$ on his jersey before the game just outside Lane stadium on pure blind faith because up to that point he hadn't done much and some were and still do blame the 1st Clemson loss on him. I watched him go 23-25 with over 300 yards and 3 TDs and the game winning run from 20 yards out when the Canes bit on the play fake to who...... DAVID WILSON! Then watched him continue on that awesome 2011 run where he led us to the Sugar Bowl berth. So yea those factors make me a little biased toward Logan but I dont care I will support Logan Thomas for the rest of the season. And I'm proud to say I Am A Logan Lover!
This game wasn't all on Logan Thomas like a lot of fans want to say it was. The play-calling was an absolute joke. I defended Loeffler last week, but this week I'm gonna tear him apart.
#1: I don't care if we scored off it, when you're on the 6 inch line you DO NOT line up in the shotgun. That's giving the defense 5 yards they don't deserve to have.
#2: If your offensive line can't block anyone why do you keep running 5 step drops? Do we even have a quick slant in our playbook?
#3: The fullback is an actual position, at some point our coaches should attempt to utilize one and run the damn ball out of an I formation. No more of this stupid shotgun or pistol crap on every play. Run the damn ball! Even if it doesn't go anywhere it keeps the defensive linemen from pinning their ears back.
#4: I've been saying this for 3 years and I'll say it again, Logan Thomas is not a good runner. He has all the physical tools to be a more athletic Ben Roethlisberger, but he has absolutely no moves. Everyone saw big black guy and thought he must be just like Cam Newton. He's not, he's a guy who can throw the ball and has absolutely no agility (he is straight line fast but that's not enough to be a good runner).
I can see where you're coming from, but I'll go ahead and defend some playcalling here.
1. We scored. Easily. Everyone in the world, myself and the BC defense included, thought the traditional 4th-and-Logan veer/power was coming up and Lefty faked out every single one of them. That was beautiful. I don't care what formation it was out of, that was a perfectly-called play and it was executed masterfully. Let's keep in mind that our traditional, outside zone/stretch play on a 4-th and 1 was easily stuffed by Duke.... Yup, Duke.... I'm not sure I'd trust the offense to do much better against BC.
2. I too would like to see more quick slant-type patterns, mostly cause Logan seems to be very comfortable with throwing that route (see GT last year). That said, it's entirely possible the defense was lining up to take away those types of routes which causes Logan to make his check to a deeper ball where he'll likely have one-on-one coverage, or a screen play (which, by the way, was called and executed perfectly 1.5 times).
3. He's given Rogers a couple carries (which is more than the previous staff did in about 4 years), but he fumbled the last one. Hard to blame the OC for not trusting a true freshman walkon with the ball, or the offense for that matter, more often.
4. He's not shifty, but he's athletic enough to get upfield and get 4-7 yards and that's all we need. He decimated GT with it, he won the 2011 Miami game with it and he's been our most consistent runner with that straight-line speed all year. That said, why he ever runs outside is completely beyond me.
I don't think they could possibly be taking away the quick slant all game. It had to be open at some point and we just never tried. When I'm at the games all I see is long developing underneath routes, but no slants.
I don't want Rogers to get the ball, I want him to be in there as a lead blocker.
And I don't know who downvoted you, but here's an upvote. You weren't being a jerk at all, stating your opinion in a mature and respectful manner (very rare on the internet) should be commended.
We fumbled the first time we lined up under center on the goaline. Maybe there's a reason we go in shotgun. Just saying.
Maybe that's true, but we also might have fumbled because we never go from under center. We don't even try so they're not used to it. Probably makes the QB-center exchange a little awkward.
The coaches stand behind Logan, and that's good enough for me. I also believe he's a good ambassador for Virginia Tech. He hasn't given us any off-the-field issues.
I have to agree. As tough as we all are on Logan, the players and the coaches are around him everyday. They both continue to praise his leadership. They would know better than us.
I did some quick scouting because I like LT but I feel bad for his predicament...
Here are some numbers for FSU (backups are *):
Kelvin Benjamin: 6-5 234
*Jesus Wilson: 5-9 177
Kenny Shaw: 6-0 170
*Christian Green: 6-2 200
Levonte Whitfield: 5-7 178
*Rashad Greene: 6-0 180
*Isaiah Jones: 6-4 200
Starting Oline:
6-6 320; 6-6 322; 6-4 300; 6-4 330; 6-4 315;
Here we are:
DJ coles: 6-4 234
Joshua Stanford: 6-1 191
Demitri Knowles: 6-1 180
Willie Byrn: 5-10 179
Charley Meyer: 6-1 215
Oline:
6-5 292; 6-4 296; 6-2 299; 6-3 308; 6-5 313
Logan's surrounding cast, just from a size standpoint is subpar. Benedict, our largest Oline only outweighs there center. Their backup o-line is even bigger. Joshua Stanford and Dj Coles are our most comparable receivers size wise but DJ has still not fully returned and Stanford isn't always consistent. I am not trying to make excuses and say LT played great aside from his receivers. What I am saying is that there is not a lot of firepower around him and he isn't great when he has to do it all by himself. This will probably be my last post for a while--I'd rather just lurk around, up vote people and read french then get involved in a QB war like what has happened.
Winston is throwing to Jesus... no wonder he's having a miraculous freshman season.
Joking aside, I think it was McShay that pointed out that there are a lot of quarterbacks out there with receivers who are making more plays and dropping fewer balls than the VT receivers. It's to be expected with a young group. Heck, Tyrod, with freshmen Boykin, Coale and Roberts, had a TD:INT ratio of 2:7. Winston's really good, but no way ESPN's on the same loveboat if he played with VT's receivers.
Haven't watched Winston much. Does he throw off his back foot into defenders chest in a tie game in his own zone?
Or try to throw back over the middle in the red zone?
Yes, he actually frequently will loft balls to the endzone, including across the field, and let his athletic wide receivers and tight ends go up and make a catch. Can Demetri Knowles do that?
Zach Mettenberger lofts balls to Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry every other play. They go up and catch the ball. USC's quarterback used to do the same to Marquise Lee.
Playmakers make plays and make the players around them look better. Unfortunatley, we don't have too many playmakers on offense.
You can add Johnny Heisman to that list. He throws balls up for Evans and others to go up and get all the time.
Qb's have to have someone to go get their throws and make plays every once in a while at least. I don't know if we have found that type of playmaker yet.
I've been in disappointed in the losses the last two weeks, but there are encouraging signs. Mostly the way the team is still playing hard and keeps supporting each other. Case in point, was how they were pumping up Journell (who has had an up and down year) before and after that 56 yd kick. The offense has been racking up yards compared to our opponents. I see a lot of good plays, but it's the mistake plays that are killing us. I like Logan, and he's made some brutal mistakes the past couple of weeks, but he also is the same player who led the offense the previous three games and played good mistake free football.
I'm looking forward to see the Hokies get a little revenge on the U, and get the Hokies back on track. I want to see these guys finish the season with some more wins and it starts next week with Miami. So sack up, enjoy rooting on your team, and start to become the excitable 12th man VT football has been known for.
Yeah, Logan is our leader and starter. He's done so much for the team and I dislike the bashing. We've lost 3 games (2 we should have won) so it's not like we're getting blown out like last year (Pitt, UNC). We're actually moving the football, but mostly through the air. If we had a decent running game, Logan wouldn't take such a pounding and make as many mistakes IMO. Miami is on tap, so lets get back to our winning ways.
Here's my personal opinion the Logan bashing. The man moved to QB for the team, he wanted to stay as a TE but since the team needed a QB he was unselfish enough to become QB. So why trash a man who puts the team first? I have been critical of him in the past but that doesn't mean I hate him. He is a great teammate and an even better person. I'm feeling a big game out of him this Saturday.
He will go to the NFL an promptly move over to TE; I for one hope he dominates.
People who make comments like this do not know football. He makes NFL throws and has an NFL arm. He will be an NFL quarterback. Period.
He will be drafted as a QB by the 3rd / 4th round where he will continue to learn progressions (like Tyrod is doing, by the way), and he will make more money in a few years then I will make in my lifetime.
Logan is a team player, a model citizen, a good guy, and a devoted Christian who has given back to the community. I know he is inconsistent on the field, but not off. While I know what matters the most is performance on the field, I would much rather have someone like him representing our school, then win titles/championships/etc with pieces of trash (example Marcus Vick).
The season is not over. Before we start saying hes the worst QB ever, etc, etc we should just let the season play out. While everyone seems to remember the bad, Logan has given us some great memories (example Miami 2011). I get frustrated like the rest with some of his on the field performances, but taking a step back and seeing what he has done and with all the challenges presented to him puts things into a better perspective, in my opinion.
Here, here. I hope Joshua Stanford is the next guy we look at when we talk about faces of the program.
LT's 8 turnovers the last two weeks are due to the fact that every play requires him to either throw or run it himself. If he has the ball in his hands 50 times a game; eventually he will make mistakes. And I am well aware all QB's have the ball in their hands every play; but he is literally required to pass or scramble on busted pass plays as well as run the read-option style QB keeper runs (which never work for more than 3 yards).
This offense is terrible. We had first a goal on the 1 and I turned to my wife and said "We might need all 4 plays to make it in". I can't remember another VT team where I thought that. Also, the second week in a row we have had a TD called back due to a penalty. If we can't score, we certainly can't afford to be taking points off the board.
LT is the best option we have; but I hope the next guy in line is a more accurate passer; doubt anyone else can stand up to the running punishment that he takes, so we will definitely need a work-horse RB next season.
Well said!!!
