Team meeting tonight. Ready to get back after it. A lot of work and a big summer ahead of us. A storm is brewing! pic.twitter.com/hCJlF1RTqb— Justin Fuente (@CoachFuente) May 27, 2019

Let's fucking go!
Hokies!
On Memorial Day? Seems pretty disrespectful especially given Tech's roots to the military...
Team memorial day cookout would be less disrespectful?
Of all the things that happen on Memorial Day, this is the one that is disrespectful?
Yeah, why can't they be more respectful like me and gulp down a burger, a couple hot dogs, and 14 beers on Memorial Day?
Found the jingoist
If you all are looking for a comment to downvote, let me present this gem personally attacking Jander.
And I'll let you in on a little secret, AXD1985... for those who have served, Memorial Day is much less about flag waving and much more about remembering your brothers and sisters.
Lol found the other jingoist?
Don't presume you know me or what I have / have not sacrificed. And if getting offended on a football website is what does it for you, perhaps take a break from the internet.
Fair enough.
But it's fine that you presume someone else is a jingoist?
It was a joking jab to someone who was preaching how to celebrate a holiday that they have no right preaching. Yes, I will make that jab 100% of the time whether you get offended or not.
next time isn't too much to ask.
....or you can relax and not take every post so seriously, especially ones not aimed at you when you feel the need to shove your nose into it.
Next time isn't too much to ask.
Considering TKP polices itself and you threw out a personal attack, I'd say my nose was fine right where it was.
Oh, and don't get offended that I assumed you didn't serve. I was just joking, brother.
What's that saying about assuming, again?
I don't know how many times I have to repeat myself about what a jab is, but oh well lol.
Pardon me, but my ESP is a bit off today. I thought it was pretty clear when I suggested you use a /s tag that I had no clue you were joking. The view must be amazing from that high horse.

Obligatory gif response

Lol dude quit while you're down. You're just making it worse for yourself.
let's not
Not sure why this got downvoted into oblivion...Memorial day means different things to different people. While I agree that it's not disrespectful...dont think you should downvote it because someone else does..
I can see why it's getting downvoted. It's almost proposing that you need to stop everything and spend all day focusing on the sacrifices made by servicemen and anything else you want to do is disrespectful. Except cookouts. If you don't give your absolute attention to the military, you are ungrateful.
There's a difference between saying your undivided attention should be given to the military and suggesting scheduling something a different day. What you do with your own time is on you, but taking someone else's time on a solemn holiday is a completely different animal.
I'm already tapping out on this thread as one of the dumbest things to argue over on this board. Coach had the kids in for a team meeting and someone got twisted over it. We offseason now boys.
This.
Congrats guys, you took a message from the Coach intended to pump people up for next season, find some reason to be offended by it, then devolve into an argument about why we should or should not be offended.
Dafuq is wrong with y'all?Considering this meeting could have been held on any other day, for some, it does read as disrespectful. That could be considered a little over-the-top, but the day holds more meaning for different folks. You don't have to agree with that, but you better fucking respect it.Edit: Jander expressed an opinion based on how things played in his mind. Because it's an opinion, it shouldn't be downvoted per community guidelines.
Memorial Day means different things to different people, and it isn't for any of you to decide whether or not it is disrespectful.
On the whole I am like Rangerhokie and could care less what you, personally, do with your Memorial Day. I do sort of agree with Jander though, because, as I said in my response to NerdMagic, you're scheduling a meeting that could be scheduled any other day. That prevents others from spending Memorial Day the way they wish.
Either way, Jander's comment was an opinion that shouldn't have been downvoted and it isn't for any of you to say how he should feel about it.
I apologize for flying full-tilt at everyone with my original comment, but I do hope you read this edit to see why I came at you that way.
We all understand what you mean APFoW and that it comes from a good place. At it's core, I agree with what you and Jander are saying.
But if we're going by community guidelines, Jander definitely crossed a no politics rule. This is a small skip away from the whole Kap controversy in the NFL. Do I think it's downvote worthy? Nah, I leave that for when DC trolls. Did it need to be said? Nah.
And ultimately, opinions aren't protected. If you have an opinion inflammatory enough, you get a downvote, not a life sentence. I'm sure someone will post their xkcd about opinions people don't like and free speech. I just think it's terribly poor taste to try and guilt trip a group that is working hard to improve and has bought in to the process by insinuating they don't respect the military history of VT.
I disagree with you that what Jander said was political..but I'm not going to downvote you for holding that opinion...we just agree to disagree and move on...
I agree with a lot of this, but I still feel like you are putting a lot of words into Jander's comment that aren't there.
Now, personally, I think that reads as because of our military roots the decision is even more puzzling.
Could the guilt trip sentiment you're ascribing to him be behind that comment? Sure, it's possible. But it isn't there in black and white and I think you're wrong for assuming that view is there.
Meh, Memorial Day is everyday for me and anybody else who has lost family and friends to the service of our nation. Most veterans have a fun loving work hard, play harder mentality and would want you to do whatever the hell you want on a day set aside for them.
Wholeheartedly agree. But I do take issue at everyone dive-bombing Jander for a perfectly fucking valid opinion.
I agree.
While it's worth taking a moment and remembering our fallen, it's also a day off and marks the beginning of summer. You can do whatever you want on that day.
I'm certainly not going to criticize anyone for doing something positive or useful on that day.
For those people who have no understanding of astronomy.

You obviously don't live near the beaches, or vacation destinations, or have kids. Many definitions of summer...and when it starts.
Oh, I have kids. They're my excuse for not going to more Tech games (or having a life, for that matter).
Ah, this explains the craziness. Mars is in retrograde.
Oh, so now I've offended someone who doesn't grasp the difference between astronomy and the culturally-recognized start of summer for people who like to do things like go to the pool or the beach?
Yes, it's officially the offseason.
This belongs in the "Well, actually" Hall of Fame.
....so, it sounds like the football team is kicking off their summer with a strong bond and focus on #getbetter. Kind of exciting, right?
Super exciting! And Fuente is using social media to share that he is happy with the effort and attitude. Let that marinade a second. A coach who is noted as being media shy is actively using an account to share his excitement over the improvement of his team.
Summer session 1 starts today- so that is why the meeting was last night, as most/all players will start taking classes today.
Jander is entitled to his opinion. Gave him a leg back though I believed it to be just a bit outside.
Back to the hype! Fu is getting the juices flowing! I like it! Loving the new attitude. Go Hokies!
No Bitches Allowed
I won't lie, I woke up to Tre's tweet and thought he declared as a two sport athlete at VT.
Basketball is his #1 love...
No Basketball Allowed
Right. We cannot afford those fifth metatarsal issues bleeding over into the football team.
I was thinking more along the lines of Antone Exum balling in McComas a few years ago...
Clearly a Raptors fan.
So yea this didn't go like I thought.
Don't sweat it HF, it's the off-season after a rough season, we're all a little anxious and snippy. Legs for everyone, and hearty thanks to all service members, past and present.
I agree, let's turn this thing around.
With about 3 months until the start of the season, what's everyone most anxious to see? I like the cohesion and unity amongst the team, and I hope it translates to results on the field in a big way. On offense, I want to see us finally get the running game going. I still maintain that without the ability to physically impose our will up front, the offense will be explosive through the air and put up some yards, but drives will stall and points will be left on the field. I hope the OL recruiting starts to pay dividends and some of our RBs emerge. If we can get an experienced talent like Feaster, you could argue this may be the second best offense in the ACC.
I think Willis is also poised for a huge year with the weapons we have at WR, and he seems to have developed some chemistry with Tre to stretch the field. He's also plays with some attitude which I like. Can the running game finally come together and help him out? We realistically haven't had a consistent traditional running attack since the David Wilson days. Would love nothing more than to see us late in a game when fatigue starts to set in be able to run it down the other team's throats and put it away.
In a general sense, I'm excited because Coach Fuente seems excited. It seems like he thinks he's got a pretty good team.
I was rewatching last year's UVA game, and the announcers mentioned that in their meetings with Fuente earlier in the week, he said, "If they're gonna get us, they better get us this year."
That got me pretty excited, because if you listen to the media this offseason, the Coastal is UVA's to lose. Which is funny because the Coastal has literally never belonged to UVA, but that's beside the point.
But the fact that he made a comment like that to members of the media makes me think he really believes it. That sounds like a comment he'd say to Bud in a meeting, or to his wife at home, but to make that comment in a meeting with ESPN (and knowing it would be repeated on-air) tells me he expects a much better team in 2019.
That definitely implies that Fu truly believes last year was the low water mark for the program and not a trend. There are certainly signs that suggest he may be right, but I will remain in a wait and see mode before buying into the hype. We hear great things about how we are working harder than ever each offseason. With the opportunity to bounce back that this year's schedule affords us, we need to take advantage of it as a spring board into 2020 and beyond.
Two things need to improve in my opinion:
1) Defensive execution. I don't doubt the players' physical abilities. We have some of the most talented defensive players I've ever seen on the squad, line backer, for the first time in recent memory, really jumps out as a position of strength. Last year's fatal flaw was poor technique and lack of discipline on assignments leading to huge plays for opposing teams. I'm talking from ODU to ND, the home run plays killed us and was a departure from Bud's usual bend-don't-break style of defense. Vividly remember watching the FSU game with Mack Brown, Hugh Freeze, and a few others talk about how a blown assignment by the corner led to a huge touchdown.
2) Leadership. This team really needs a vocal, steady leader. Last year, Kyle Chung and Ricky Walker are the two I would say were the leaders, but they very much seemed to say they didn't want to let their former teammates down. I'm looking at guys like Dax, Tre, Rashad, and Damon as people that need to set the tone for THIS team, not last years or next years, they need to have everyone focus on each game and going 1-0.
Totally agree with this. And both of those are things you would hope/expect to greatly improve with increased age and experience in the program.
I'm not totally in agreement that we are THAT talented on defensive (maybe, but I need to see it first). But I think the pure number of returning snaps on defensive will make this a much better unit in 2019. We'll still be young enough that 8 wins is the satisfactory point for me, but that would show me that there's a chance this could be a 10-win team in 2020.
Whoops! Vtkey was right over on the "dethrone football" page:
this is most definitely in the running for Most Offseason Thread.

I have two answers:
First:

and regarding this thread:
Offseason Is Here
Justin Fuente is currently my second love. Behind soccer and in front of the wife. Or vice versa 🤔. I don't know what he did with the locker room, but it's working and I'm very excited for this upcoming season.
Last Season was so weird with the cancellations and delays that I think that if we could have kept the momentum going (i.e. beat ECU) we wouldnt have run into so many issues at ODU..
I like this guys level of optimism.
I think he has a point.
I agree with this, because I think ECU would have given those guys some things to think about and their play before they just blew it against ODU.
And I came here expecting a thread about football....
Go home off season, youre drunk
And instead its about professional basketball. Weird, right?
So, #improveonimproving ??
The offseason happened.
To me this is the start of the season. Every signed kid is on campus this summer as far as I can tell, anymore kids giving up football or leaving the team will happen this summer so it's 2019 football season.
I leave you kids alone in the house for a little while and this thread is what I come back to!?
Was the meeting productive? Is their anything to report on from the Meeting? Is The Turner declaring for the NBA Draft?
