I gotta say, that's a pretty impressive photography trick to make a 24,333-person stadium look so big.
Especially without photoshopping fans in.
I believe its the Atlanta Braves stadium turned into a football field
Technically it was the 1996 Olympic's track and field venue turned into the Brave's stadium turned into a football field. But you still right!
Holy crap you're right. I had no idea.
That's where my all time favorite Olympic track and field moment happened, in 1996 when Michael Johnson and his gold shoes absolutely obliterated the 200m world record which had stood for 17 years.
Yeah Braves play at Suntrust Park now, not the old Turner Field/1996 Olympic's venue
That's the old Ted baby!
At this point...
We were at that point 10 years ago.
Eleven years ago. I was at that game, in Charlotte.
Point taken.
[I had to check my memory and math so many times on this. A quick Google search and an edit later, here we are.]
Bad pirates...all of em.

I am completely and utterly shocked by this! Whatever will we do without them reminding us that they are so great because they pretended to be decent human beings when the unspeakable happened, then try to make us look like the bad guys when the weather turned and they high-tailed it to FL?
I might cry... Wait, no, I got nothing. They burned the bridge to Blacksburg already.
Peace out. Hope the door hits you on the way out.
Possible hurricane that weekend so it makes sense.
But.... but I thought they would have no problem replacing us with a litany of other major Power 5 schools
My first thought exactly - especially since they were talking like they'd demand home and homes, too.
Really just goes to show how much they screwed themselves by toying with us last year.
Replaced VT with William & Mary in 2019 and at Georgia State in 2020. Goes to show that nobody is willing to deal with a school who pulled the crap they did on us last year, and its going to hurt them for years to come.
Guess it just goes to show ;)
Ga State getting paid! $1.6mil to go to LSU in 2023.
https://fbschedules.com/georgia-state-east-carolina-change-dates-of-future-football-series/
Edit: They seem to be suckling at the $EC...@Tenn in 2019, @Bammer in 2020, @Auburn in 2021, @USCe in 2022, and @LSU in 2023
I'm glad someone's taking money from the $EC.
Maybe after Whit is done going after Comcast he will get rid of the last two ECU games in 2022 and 2024.
Time to wipe Hokiesports future schedules clean!
Best news of the day
This is the most interesting part of this:
I wonder if Whit found out they weren't coming via Twitter or if ECU had the decency to call first.
Probably the former...
Even if they did call Whit...

good. VT should not be in the lose/lose game business. ECU admission standards, location, and proud tradition is enough to beat you. Scheduling them like a conference opponent is enough to beat you multiple times. Schedule P5 teams or G5 teams that don't let potted plants into their school and don't play them 10 straight years so they know your schemes, coaching, and players enough to beat you. It's not hard. Weaver was just lazy.
.
Note: As much as I like this gif, I won't mind not having much occasion to use it.
Good riddance
Just so it's out there the P5 teams with 2020 OOC schedule openings:
TCU (2)
Arkansas (2)
South Carolina
Tough to get any of these schools to play a road game on a year's notice without reciprocating which we aren't really in a position to do until 2023 (a year when we already have 2 P5 OOC games scheduled). So I wouldn't expect a big time opponent to replace ECU.
Meh, we're going to go with a middling G5 opponent to fill the spot, probably someone like Marshall.
Western Michigan has openings in both years...and we have a history with directional Michigan schools.
Perfect. Well take two home games against WMU. (They ain't getting a home game.)
Not even. We don't have a 1-AA team on the schedule for 2020 so we'll hook up with W&M or Furman or Elon or something.
So a game we'll probably charge the same amount for, get the same crowd for, have more flexibility on kickoff time, and likely have a much better chance of winning (assuming ECU isn't still dumpster fire garbage by then)
I fail to see the drawback here
We should play decent competition instead of William & Larry. We should definitely push to establish something with SCar. Or TCU and Arkansas since they need games badly we would have a lot of leverage there as well.
We already have 2 home OOC games and 1 away. A road or neutral site game (vs USCe @ Charlotte makes an awful lot of sense here) would not hurt at all. I'd be happy to play any of those 3 teams that year. If, as many of us believe, 2020 is to be Fuente's and VT's brekthrough year, a non-con schedule including Penn State and any of those three teams would make for a mighty fine playoff resume.
perfect year for a 1-off neutral site game.
I'd give serious consideration to attending South Carolina @ Charlotte or TCU/Arkansas @ Nashville. Charlotte because it's a doable game-day drive from DC (assuming night kickoff), and Nashville because there's enough going on there outside of the football game to justify taking Friday off and making the all-day drive.
vs SC @Charlotte

I'm all for any Hokie game in CLT! I can pay more for better seats because I don't have to spend anything on hotel.
good luck finding it
Ready for another Belk Bowl appearance?
If it ain't CFP or NY6, I am selfishly hoping for a Belk Bowl bid.
Not P5, but I'd love a H-H series with UCF. They're good enough (great last couple). Plus Orlando isn't the worst place to go for a game...
That's basically ECU trap over again though
I think your picture link is broken
Except UCF is approaching Boise levels of respect. ECU was barely above average at their peak, which was the problem.
Interesting that you say that, but the Pirates were actually pretty decent under Skip Holtz, including a win over Boise State in the 2007 Hawaii Bowl, followed by wins over VT (in Charlotte) and WVU to open the 2008 season.
They were not the dumpster fire we know today until the departure of Skip Holtz and the absolute turmoil that then became the norm within their athletic department as a whole.
Were they great? No. But the were certainly above average.
This is really the problem with these long-standing, reciprocal scheduling agreements; they look great when you schedule a relatively strong OOC opponent and then they're a steaming pile of dog shit by the time you play your sixth game in the series.
Boise state didn't work out that great for us. We would be so much better off playing the dregs of the SEC. If we win it's exposure. They have huge followings. If we lose well they were SEC anyway.
That's a win-win instead of a lose-lose we had with ECU and we will have setting up long term agreements with any G5 like that. If we beat a G5, nobody cares. Not if it's boise, not if it's houston, not if it's western Michigan, not if it's UCF. Maybe a decade ago those teams would get recognized and respected, not anymore.
Just look at auburn and IIRC LSU losing to UCF. They got clowned. I'm tired of it.
The problem is that a win win is a lose lose for them and they have to agree to it
Agreed we should play someone like Kentucky, Mizzou or Mississippi State. Big win for the conference and not very difficult
Maybe you didn't see our season last year vs Kentucky's or Missouri recently
Okay what about the last five
True but the two P5 games are Purdue and Rutgers so....not like 2025 when we play Penn State and Wisconsin (don't laugh-it COULD eventually happen for real!) or 2021 when we have WVU and Notre Dame(and WOULD have had Michigan too). Just saying we COULD add say South Carolina which wouldn't be a bad game to play geographically and recruiting wise.
We are due for another Chick Fil A Kickoff appearance. UNC-Auburn is scheduled for 2020 but they have done 2 games in the past and I feel like USC-VT would be a great draw for them.
They've already got 3 Chick-Fil-A games scheduled for 2020. The UNC/Auburn game is part of week 2. They already have FSU/WVU and UGA/UVA lined up for week 1.
2021-2022 both have two games booked. There is no game currently announced for 2023, but 2024 has Georgia/Clemson.
As for the other kickoff games:
-Belk has games scheduled for 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023. (Although their 2021 matchup is ECU vs. App State.)
-Both games in Texas only have games announced for 2019 and 2020.
-Camping World only has games announced for 2019 and 2023.
What about Wisconsin? We should try and schedule them.
I'm playing the worlds smallest violin right now
Of course, a quick viewing of the Reddit thread over this has the typical "ECU helped VT after the massacre, you all are assholes" from the Pirate fans
It's all the OP of that thread, pretty sure he's been in every single one of those threads singing the same song and collecting downvotes.
You went in on that dude hard and I am loving it. He deleted his entire thread with me.
What a coward. Deleted my replies because he looked badhaha no he didn't, I just can't find it cause y'all downvoted his ass to oblivion so now my comments are hidden
We got you fam.

ECU homeboy strolling into that thread expecting everything to go well for him...
ECU really got fucked by their last AD Compher. Went from having a big time opponent going to Greenville every year to now hardly playing any at all. Not the way to grow the program and improve their status.
Disclaimer I actually like ECU and think football is more fun when they're good. I'm used to them whipping up on State and Carolina and losing to us that's the way it should be.
I was reading this thread while waiting in the parking lot to pick my kid up from preschool. Then, the first person I saw while walking into the building was some old guy in an ECU polo.
The janitor?
To show you just how incompetent those people are...
They hired Mike Houston (a fantastic hire IMO) who happens to be a great networker. While he's out networking with some of the big donors it comes to his attention that Pepsi is no longer being sold at ECU sporting events (they went to Coke products). This is important because Pepsi is a local brand and that family has been one of ECU's biggest donors...
I'm sure they tweeted a pic of a Coke bottle inside the stadium, and that's how the local Pepsi bottler found out.
Well, good on them. Pepsi sucks.
Coke is only good in little glass bottles.
In my [unpopular] opinion, RC is better than both of them.
Fountain Coke is the best thing ever invented. Ever.
Mexican coke with Sugar Cane is the best.
Agreed. Always the fountain drink, never the bottle.
my maaaaan right you are. the fact that it's a product with ECU ties explains so much
Looks like ECU wants to jerk us along a little while longer.
We should just schedule someone else. Let them find out via twitter
Please. I don't care who it is (unless it rhymes with Liberty).
Western Carolina
just to fuck with em
We still have games scheduled with them for 2022 and 2024. If they really do cancel the game in 20 then Whit needs to cancel the other 2 and move on. I guess that assumes whether the contract language allows us to cancel without financial reprocussion.
It actually wouldn't shock me if they just realized they hadn't officially told us that yet and are now back tracking to try and save face. I truly think that is a possible reason.
They want us to pay to cancel
They can take it out of what they owe us.
no dont
This would make sense for them to wait until the last minute to cancel the game. It's a bullshit thing for them to do but it lines up with their actions concerning this whole thing up to this point.
Ding ding ding, we have a winner
I hope we play the game. It's a hell of a better warm up than ODU, Liberty, or Middle Tennessee and now the deal is on our terms at our stadium. Seriously fuck replacing this game with an FCS or rando G5
Looks like ECU wants to be a jerk a little while longer. FTFY
You know that they are going to milk this for as long as they possibly can. But I agree with Andy, I can't see this game being played.
Schedule literally any other NC school, tweet "we're honored to play a real NC school".
This is like finding out that your ex, who you dumped for being high maintenance and stirring up drama, is now with some frumpy dude with no career prospects. You're happy she found someone if only because you're hopeful you'll stop getting those "take me back, I miss you" texts, and happy to have the toxic relationship out of your life.
Give me JMU for that spot,I want Tech to beat them so bad they never consider playing us again! So to give a little background on this, I live near and work in Harrisonburg and I really hate JMU football.
If beating them badly would cause them to not want to play us, they'd have given up after one of the first 6 times we played them.
I grew up about 20 minutes from JMU (hence the name) I want to dogwalk the fuck out of them, like legitemately try and score 100 to out them back in their JV football level mindset
The school sucks! They're sports admin sucks too.
Porn guy gets the chick.
Wipe the entire slate!
Might wanna check the grammar if you're gonna drag them as an institution of higher education
Give him break, engineers get teach math, no language.
Bullshit. I know the difference between they're shitty school and ours. Their are simple grammar rules your not gonna forget after an English teacher like mine. The whole class thought there head might explode if we went over it in any more detail.
Is the presence of at least one grammar or spelling mistake in every post in this sub-thread on porpoise*?
*obligatory, I think
As much as I want the series to be over, I don't want Tech to give ECU another dime. They need to be the ones to cancel our home games, not us.
Well, you'll be sad to know that our home games each include a payment to them.
If we cancel on them that get paid for nothing.
At least we'll be paying to kick their ass if we play.
No

Is ECU still on any future schedule? I might have to start saving up to fulfill my donation promise. Anyone have the link to my commitment?
Found it!
2020 FBS teams w/ an open out-of-conference slot is Coastal Carolina, SMU, FIU, Southern Miss, LA Tech, Western Michigan, Arkansas, & South Carolina. Don't know whether any of these are actually to be likely matchups. The other part of me feels that at this point with already playing Liberty, Penn State, and @ MTSU that Whit would be fine with adding an FCS team to the schedule.
I say Western Michigan, to throw a nod to the directional Missagain matches in the past, Western to thumb at East CU, and Michigan to thum at Big Blue.
I seem to remember something about the ACC instituting a policy limiting the frequency that we're allowed to schedule FCS going forward, maybe once every four years? Or maybe it was a school decision? Anybody know what I'm talking about?
For the love of God, put JMU on the schedule, beat them by 60, then never play them again so we stop hearing about 2010.
What are you even talking about?
If anyone is actually still talking about that, it seems they could be easily ignored.
talking about what
Exactly.
Dear ECU,
Leg for anything Tombstone.
They'reTheirBItches
