OT: WVU with 15 players in portal since January

As spring football winds down I have been seeing more and more schools have transfers that in general I would assume are the result of apring position battles. Makes me wonder if VT just ripped the bandaid off early where others are dragging it out. (Although there are rumors some of the wvu are related to a tutor/cheating scandal)

Although there are rumors some of the wvu are related to a tutor/cheating scandal

I mean, any sane person would choose to leave Morgantown if they have the option. They don't need a reason.

I think transfers (especially after a coaching change) are the new norm in college football. I think we had a really good group of seniors who stuck around once Beamer left. I also think we're lucky the transfer portal wasn't around during our coaching change.

We had a fantastic group of juniors that were on Fuente's first team.

I think this year will be the anomaly. There are going a lot of kids sitting around with nowhere to go.

There are only a few spots per team, even if teams wanted to take somebody, for once, the numbers wont work out.

We'll see... I think there's a bit of a herd mentality; you see a few people enter the portal, then all of a sudden you want to enter the transfer portal. Beyond that, it seems that it's really easy to enter the portal, and it doesn't look like there's any cost to doing it (you can remove yourself from the portal at any point).

There is a large cost, most of the kids aren't getting their scholarship back at the school they want to leave.

The risk is high, but if there's a low % of athletes who actually lose their scholarship, then the (weighted) cost is low.

Do you have any numbers on this? Not saying I don't believe you, but Hooker and McClease both returned to our team after 'testing the waters'. Curious to understand how many coaches decide to yank the scholly once the player puts his name in the portal. Also wondering how many kids entered the transfer portal and were stuck without a scholarship anywhere.

We are going to have to wait until Fall camps/classes start to see who didn't end up on a P5, G5 or even FCS roster.

Well according to an article from the Athletic there's 450+ kids from Power 5 schools in the transfer portal. 90 some have landed with another Power5 and only 65 landed at a Group of 5 so far.

These kids count against the team total they can bring in a year including recruits, so the teams that have spots open are small.

We'll see how it plays out if these coaches accept kids back or ultimately pull scholarships...

Also curious how many of those 450 kids had a scholarship promised for the next year - they could've been nudged out by a coach or walk ons who haven't earned a scholarship yet.

I don't know, that's a good question...

I would lean towards it's more scholarship players but that's just a guess

I would too, but we had a kicker leave, so 1 of our at least.

Nice!

WVU is going from having no rules under Dana Holgorsen to having rules under Neal Brown. It's probably better for them to have no rules though because that's about the only way a lot of players will go there.

Was that a thing? I never really got the impression that Dana let all that much go relative to other P5 coaches. That being said, other than the year before last, I never paid any real attention to WVU's program.

In 2015, they were 6th in college football with the most arrests on their team at 20. I only know that because this idiot WVU fan was calling VT a bunch of thugs because he was mad we beat Miami back in 2016, so I kindly used facts which ended up getting me blocked.

I'm surprised there were five other teams with more than 20 arrests in 2015.

We will gladly lose this championship to the cousins. All hail Portal!

Is this the new Fulmer Cup?

No lots of transfers is a sad thing (see threads from this spring). the Fulmer cup is quite funny.

Is there anyone Tech might want in a position of need who can play right away? DT?

My answer to this is based on how you phrase the question.

This is WVU, not clemson, bama, or Ohio State. Likely the players transfering are those who were not looking at playing much (unless the rumor said above about a tutor is true). If the playing time issue is the case, (let's use DT in this example), if they arent good enough to start for WVU, then they're not good enough to start for us/play right away at DT. If it were a player from one of those schools, even though they're not playing much there they might be good enough to start for us (i.e the Clemson RB we're recruiting from the portal)

Now if you rephrase the question to "is there anyone Tech might want in a position of need so we can build depth?" That answer might be (and is probably) yes and we need depth at the DT position ofc, but then we run into the issue of would a player be willing to transfer from one school where he wasnt playing much to another school where he also probably wouldnt play much. The player probably would not and I imagine the coaches arent going to waste their time on that one.

If the tuturing rumors are in fact true, then that changes the whole equation. They might be P5 starting caliber, but now there's character questions that I would say needs to be answered first before we open our doors to their transfer.

Two of the players in the portal were the projected starter at both safety spots. Kenny Robinson was a two-year starter. First-team all Big XII in '18-'19.

Simms was their most experienced returning wideout. 87 resceptions.

Also bears noting that all of them went through spring ball with no apparent issues. Not sure if that feeds the tutor scandal flames or not.

WVU is also out of schollys. No room for any more incoming transfers. True "next man up" situation...

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

Robinson is due his credit, he earned first-team for his conference which is a noteworthy accomplishment, but let's look at it closer and realize that it's the Big XII where defense is optional. So how good is he compared to other safety's from other leagues (ACC/SEC). But then let's say he is in fact a really good player, do we want to replace Divine or Floyd with him? Even if he is better now he has to learn our schemes/playcalls. And I could see that adding distrust in the locker room where Deablo and Floyd have been "our guys" for 2 years and we just bring in someone to replace them out of the blue.

To add, I would really be questioning why a player who was all conference for his team with 2 years of eligibility left at a Power 5 school is looking to transfer, could be coaching change yes. but with these rumors circulating I'm really skeptical.

The latter logic I said I would also apply to Simms, we have "our guys" at receiver, and even though we are always looking for more receivers so fuente can play his 7 or 8 a game, I doubt Simms would be willing to come here and be the 4th receiver, which would mean he'd have to supplant Turner or Grimsley or Hazleton, and this would cause locker room issues I feel like.

I tried to find a full list of WVU players transfering, so far all I have is this which doesnt look 100% up to date (8 wvu players instead of 15) https://247sports.com/Article/NCAA-transfer-portal-names-players-destina....

if they arent good enough to start for WVU, then they're not good enough to start for us/play right away at DT.

I dunno about that. Reasons may vary. You can argue scheme isn't the same, but I wouldn't go quite as far as saying what you did - especially how bad we are at the moment. I wouldn't get too high on our own horse about this.

true, their scheme is vastly different from ours. But then again they were recruited by WVU, so logic would say that they fit WVU's scheme, not ours. The opposite ofc is that they dont fit WVU's scheme and that's why they're transferring, which could be the scenario since they have a new coach (I have no idea what defensive scheme Neal Brown runs)

I'm not saying our DT depth is Clemson level, but if they're not on the 2 deep at WVU (a comparable P5 school to VT in terms of recruiting I'd say), I wouldnt expect them to play right away for us. I'm not saying they're bad players or they wouldnt add depth. But why should I expect a 4th string DT at WVU to supplant Hewit/Crawford/Porcher as the starter?
