Try to limit it to the one, if possible. The absolute best, in your opinion.
Please EXCLUDE anything to do with officials' calls or non-calls. This is only about coaching calls..
And go.

Gotta be Chase Mummua fake punt pass. The planning that went into that.
There's an argument to be made that it's not even the best fake punt of the Fuente era.
Consider me Team Jump Shot
But it's play call not execution right? Just think about how king and hard they worked at that.
are you sure it didn't take longer to practice a football jumpshot by a punter than a pass from a QB?
it was definitely an interestingly planned wrinkle to give Mummau a punter's number, but i don't know that it was something that required too much balls to call or execute
They changed Mummau from a QB to a punter on the roster, website and gave him a new number. I would definitely say some serious planning went into that one.
Fourth and Logan?
The wheel route to Sam Rogers when we hosted Ohio State was great too.
As much as I loved 4th and Logan, I don't know that it was a great call. How many times did LT3 run that play that game, or that season. When I saw him takeoff my heart sank until I realized there was absolutely no one there.
I think the plays where the defense was nowhere to be found were the ones that were great calls or at least great reads by the players. I think of Willis's long TD run on the zone read against (I don't remember who) and also the play where Savoy signaled TD on the throw to Cam before the ball was even in the air. Those AHA! moments where film study and game planning mesh perfectly.
The best play call I've watched in all of CFB might have been Saban calling for the onside kick against Clemson because Bama noticed a weak spot in their kick coverage while they were game planning and then saw it in-game and exploited it
We did the exact same thing (onside kick) against Georgia Tech, I believe, one year. It might have been the opening kickoff of the game. Details are fuzzy, but it was such an unusual moment to go for an onside kick that they asked CFB about it specifically as he went into halftime. #Beamerball!!!
Go Hokies!
Pretty sure it was 2007 to start the 2nd half against GT. Same game couple of our guys had to wear the GT jerseys.
I gotta give credit where it's due. I really thought that whole first half against Ohio State was damn near perfection on Loeffler's part. Then Brewer got hurt and everything went out the window.
Not exactly a play call per say, but AWESOME play...
Hokie D coming in when it mattered most, forcing the fumble in OT of the LOLUVA game last season to keep the Commonwealth Cup at home in Blacksburg, where it belongs for another year.
Along those lines: Reggie Floyd not giving up on the play against Pitt, chasing the guy down on the one which led to an amazing goal line stand.
Jimmy Williams chasing down Alvin Pearman to save a touchdown during the game that began the Streak.
Yeah, but there is no way that was a called play. If anything Bud would have wanted a stop before it became a huge rushing play.
it does fall under the subthread of not exactly a play call
Tyrod to Danny Coale vs Nebraska to the 3 yd line.
Came here to post just that. That game was an absolute slog to watch but TT to Coale then TT to
BoykinRoberts, during which TT somehow avoided from Suh was a thing of beauty I'll never forgetTT to Dyrell Roberts not Boykin
*mostly* never forget lol
Do y'all remember that TD pass against NC State back in 2010? The playcall put one of our tackles outside but up on the line of scrimmage, and a tight end, I believe it was Andre Smith, took his spot on the line. Of course NC State thought the tackle was the receiver and completely ignored Smith who scored a touchdown and kind of sparked that comeback.
I was going to post this one but you beat me to it. Absolutely a great play and a great play call. It's the most creative thing I ever saw Stiney come up with
He stole it from Pitt who stole it from Saban who stole it from Belichick
Was that ryan williams tractor pull game?
No, that was in 2009. That was a pretty brilliant play call too though. Give it to RMFW and just let him drag someone 10 yards to the end zone.
Give it to RMFW and just let him drag someone 10 yards to the end zone.
This. I was sitting in the NCState section with my brother and sister in law. Everyone kept doing that "wolf" thing. After that, the state guy in front of me turns around, gives me a high five and says that was awesome and leaves.
"Now Miami wants to talk about it..." "these fans are losing their minds".
Hands down.
Edit: I don't read good. I thought it meant commentary as in calling a game.
Best play call I remember from Fuente was the fake punt pass to Terrel.
Oops.
I'm going to be honest, I thought Stiney Called his best game ever in the ACC championship game against FSU...Tyrod was great, but they were moving the ball against FSU like it wasn't nothing. It may be a tie between that game and the 2009 CFA Bowl...
This deserves more legs. That ACC title game was a clinic.
My favorite play, Tyrod was about to get hosed on a zone blitz, and David Wilson was wide open in the flat. I don't think Tyrod saw him, just knew he was going to be there and trusted his receiver.
If you played a drinking game with how many times Sean McDonough said Danny Coale was Wide open in that game...you probably didn't last to the end of the game
Two of my favorite Hokie football games.
This was our peak post National Championship.
Dominating FSU was amazing after getting whooped by them so many times over the years.
Such a shame 2011 didn't pan out. Beating Michigan for the Orange Bowl would be up there as well.
You mean Sugar Bowl. We backed into that game not being the ACC Champion, but who cares. I was happy we got Norte Dame treatment for once.
The beatdown of FSU set us up to get whooped by Stanford at the Orange Bowl.
Oops yea meant the sugar bowl
If Tyrod would've put another 3-5yds on the throw, the flea flicker opening play against Boise. Alas...sigh.
Does the Bear D against OSU count if the same play call is made all game long?
The draw to Peoples for the TD against UVA was sweet.
Totally caught me off guard with all the receivers split out.
I just want to say Kyle Fuller as MLB against GT was a stroke of genius at the time.
3rd & 31. That was drawn up that way, right? /s
The fullback wheel route against BC in 1999- beautiful play call to put the game away in the biggest VT win in history.
The flea flicker on the first play of the game against Boise State!....oh wait
I mean it kind of worked? It was a positive play in that we drew a pass interference if my memory serves me.
Under-thrown about 3-5 yards. Fumbled it straight to Boise the very next play. Considering how the team bus essentially didn't show up until the 2nd Q, that would've been a massive leg up. I said the same play. All in sarcasm or "what-if-ness." Because...damn.
Man you stole my thread for today. Sigh....
I think it's harder to say a great play call because usually those are setup by many plays before, so unless you are really watching the film a normal person won't recognize it.
They will recognize the most unforgettable plays, because those aren't planned its usually god gifted talent.
1995 UVA, Druckenmiller to Holmes. Perfect time for a double move on the outside, perfect pump fake, perfect route, and perfect throw.
GiT QB getting closelined, only bad part was his arm getting broken on that play...
Michael Vick, 2nd and 1 against WVU. Back to pass. Forget that........I'l make my own play call and go 26 yards for the win.
I know it's not a coaching call but Vick kinda did things that were uncoachable.
Any Micheal Vick play action to Andre Davis for a TD during the 99 season. There were many.
The play where the UVA linebacker requested we send the play against him.
So, we did and he got trucked.
@quin_blanding
Don't you know you're not supposed to @ him...
/s
yes
That was awesome. The 5* safety getting planted by the 3* receiver who transferred to ODU. @ his Hoo ass all you want!
Don't you mean any play called against LOLUVA that makes them look stupid? ( I know they look stupid a lot, but we can make them look more stupid)
The fake punt against Clemson. I remember thinking that we needed a well executed fake punt to swing the momentum. Then the play starts and I'm thinking 'oh well at least we'll get field position' then HOLY SHIT THAT WAS ACTUALLY A FAKE!?! It was kind of the opposite of a Stinespring playcall - instead of knowing what was going to happen before the playcall, I didn't know what was happening until the play already started.
The other option was Foster using the Bear against OSU in 2014. Caught one of the smartest offensive coaches in the last two decades completely off guard.
Total Opposite: Calling a timeout to run the fake punt with Danny Coale in the Sugar Bowl.
Bud v. Clemson 2007..."Clemson might as well hold up a sign that says screen pass"
"Thunder and Lightning" James Davis and CJ Spiller combined for 12 rushing yards in the 2007 game, 8 rushing yards for Clemson as a team.
They only had 166 yards of offense, period, in the 2006 game where they came into Blacksburg on Thursday Night ranked #10 after obliterating GT on Gameday.
Another two of my favorite Hokie football games of my life.
When Danny Coale caught that TD in the Sugar Bowl.
Just rewatching 2001 VT-Clemson bowl game. David Pugh was a terror for our D. Wow.
French just posted on the worst play, I'm interested to see what his best play is.
The obvious answer, to me, is every pass ever to Doug Easlick in the flats. But we might have different opinions.
I know you can say this for any play, but I thought "man, fans would have lost their shit if that didn't work". Getting tackled for a 5 yard loss on 4th down would have sent the message boards into meltdown.
Arguably that play was more bad execution by Miami's defense, but it's certainly up there as one of the most memorable plays in Hokie history.
2-pt conversion play vs. Miami in 2001. We block a punt, run it in for a TD, set up the 2 pt...Wilford beats one man to the outside, his other defender hits the deck....and we tie the game, eventually going on to beat the #1 Miami Hurricanes
That hurts, man
I've got to go with Miami 2011. A wide open lane means it was the perfect play call.
This will be forgotten by many because it was called back for a penalty, but it still counts as a great play call in my book... the WR (I think it was Savoy?) end-around pass for a TD against Notre Dame last season. Who knows if it could have changed the game enough for us to pull the upset - probably not considering what we know now - but a great play call and caught their D by surprise.
Yeah Savoy pass, called back because a Tackle was celebrating and walking down the field.
The read option against WVU. Jackson had a massive hole and no one close to him.
Pretty much any pass to Jarrett Ferguson in the 3rd quarter. Used to set that up through the 1st half and then bam! 15+ yards.
It has to be the Drukenmiller to Holmes play call. Those DB's were playing tight all drive, and the pump fake set up Holmes to be wide open.
I wish I had the details of this better, but, well, I don't. I was watching the game on TV, and we're on defense. One of the announcers says about our D, "That is an interesting alignment," before the ball is snapped. The play happens, we get a stop, and the same announcer proceeds to explain how the defensive alignment was perfect for the play called. He ends with, "This isn't Bud Foster's first rodeo." It was such a fun moment as a fan.
Go Hokies!
The result of the game notwithstanding, this was a great play call.
The punt return reverse against Kansas
Randall to Josh Morgan in the 2005 Sugar Bowl:
Randall to Eddie Royal to score the ACC-winning touchdown (2004 Miami)
Glennon-> Royal -> Sam Wheeler (2006 Chick-fil-A bowl)
Hitting Lee Corso's car with lightning.
The one where Marshawn Williams fumbled the ball forwards to Michael Brewer who ran it in for the touchdown.
Also the one where Steven Peoples fumbled the ball forwards to Hezekiah Grimsley who recovered it for the touchdown.
We should run that play more. It works really well.
The Peoples play about killed me. Highest of highs, to the lowest of the lows, only to come back to the highest of highs...all in a matter of about 3 seconds. "Yes! NO!! YEAAHHHH!!!"
