The dates listed on this -- Sept. 13, 2024, in Madison and Sept. 13, 2015 in Tuscaloosa -- are the exact dates VT is (was?) scheduled to play Wisconsin. The "Series That Will Never Be Played" might be in jeopardy again. #Hokies https://t.co/qnkdBp4QsAβ Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) July 29, 2019
A game originally discussed as far back as 2008 is getting moved for at least the third if not fourth time. Not sure why there isn't a financial hit to Wisconsin for this.

I think Bitter meant to say the "Series That Will Never Be Played" is safe for a bit longer.
Wisconsin realizes Jump Around isn't as cool as Enter Sandman and doesn't want to get embarrassed.
We should just cancel this and move on.
Financial penalty I'm guessing that Weaver our in for canceling but not moving.
Its been moved so many times its just never going to happen. We should just mutually agree to cancel the series. They clearly have no intention of ever playing it. And if they tried to hit us with a financial penalty for trying to cancel ourselves, we can very easily point to the many times they've bumped it out themselves to argue their bad faith
They're so afraid of us they scheduled some college called "Bama".
Says its rescheduled for 2031/2032 on r/cfb... what a ridiculous saga this has been.
Reported by Andy Bitter.
Should have claimed we have a haircut that day and its 2024 or nothing.
Just wait, there will be a tropical depression just west of Bermuda the week prior to the game and it will have to be rescheduled again.
Leonard finally makes it to the 2031 Wisconsin vs Hokie game...
Screw them. Cancel it and move on. Would much rather play an SEC team anyway
I'm with you there. For selfish reasons, I'd love a home and home with SCar or Georgia. I would definitely go to those away games, but playing South Carolina in Columbia in likely September/early October could be pretty hellish.
LOL. My Clemson friends always call Columbia the "Screen door to Hell". Supposedly it gets miserable there in the summer.
Outstanding!...my 5 year old will be moving into college...I'll be in my 50s...my toddler will be learning to drive...give me a f@&$ing break..these guys are like death in bill and teds bogus journey.."best 2 out of 3...best 3 out of 5...best 4 out of 7"...drop em and move on..they couldn't handle the terror dome...and go Hokies!
You've got to be f'ing kidding me.
By the time we play this series football is going to look like this
are you kidding? football already looks like that
Damn...that made me laugh
I assume we were consulted and agreed to it? I still don't trust that PSU will show up in Lane next year. I would be ok with canceling Wisconsin since it is so far out and they obviously don't care. I just hope we start adding better teams and get away from the Liberty's and Rhode Island's. Our schedule is already pathetic!
I think this is a great of example of how hard that is to do. If there was one thing about college football I would change it would be mandated crossover scheduling.
This is where the conference champs making a playoff has a clear benefit.
No penalty for losing early season, non-conference games. All schools could look for the most marketable games, win-loss records be damned.
Fuck 'em

Seriously, whoever reviewed the language in this contract for VT was either ill-equipped to do so, or taking a nap.
To me this is an example of the Athletic Department being not-so-ready-for-primetime just when football was really poised to establish itself as a top-tier program.
I think Andy Bitter mentioned it may help us schedule someone else, but it better be a Wisconsin type team and not another dud. We have to start acting like we are ready for primetime. Also, I would guess whoever reviewed the language was taking a nap. Asleep at the wheel!
Crossing my fingers Whit can schedule Ole Miss. I want an excuse to go to the Grove.
I've been wanting this for a while now.
As you wish...
Now, go.
You're welcome.
My cousin goes to Ole Miss and I went to the Auburn @ Ole Miss game last year. The setup of the grove is cool but if it's rained in the last few days it's all mud, they put some hay down to try to counter but it's still a mess. The actual game experience was pretty good but about half full (it was a down year.) They really are having problems with switching from the rebel's to the land sharks, it's a huge brand confusion that alumni/students are very unhappy about. Oxford was really cool, similar to Blacksburg, they also have some great restaurants and bars there.
On the other hand, I went to see LSU visit the Grove a couple of years ago, and it was an awesome day for football.
Those folks know how to tailgate, and the girls dress to impress. I was, ummm, impressed.
I'd LOVE to go there to see VT play Ole Miss.
It won't be. Teams like Wisconsin have their non-con P5 opponents locked up 10+ years out. VT just got played.
Like we had ours locked up 10 years out?
Yes, only with a better contract that was reviewed by a competent legal team and signed by a more sophisticated administrative staff.
this whole thread is gold I lol'd so many times. man i missed you guys.
I just want an excuse to drink Schlitz and grill brats.
Wisconsin fans are fun. They had spring break the same time as VT one year and it was wild. Lots of jersey girls and bon Jovi music.
jersey girls
Wisconsin girls / accents > Jersey girls / accents
as a new jersey native, this is confusing to me
As a Pennsylvania native who grew up 30 minutes from Jersey, I can't tell either.
I'm not aware of a huge contingent of NJ natives attending University of Wisconsin
Doesn't make top 25 for the 30,000 NJ students that leave every year for out of state schools. JMU did though with over 300.
Yep, lots of Jersey girls roaming around H'burg.
Maybe he meant girls wearing jerseys?
i thought this too, but then what's the connection for female wisconsin football fans and Bon Jovi???????????
I'll allow it since they get to schedule bama, but if their AD tries this again...
Oof. Big timed
I don't know why anybody signs up for these early season OOC matchups with Bama. They have a pretty remarkable record in them. Oh well, hopefully we can get another good matchup to replace them.
An absolutely incredible amount of publicity
Actually . . . this is a recent change in Alabama's OOC scheduling philosophy. The last 6-10 years, they've only been going for the neutral openers along with a mix of G5 and FCS home games. It's only been the last few months that they've started scheduling true P5 home and homes.
So, on the one hand, screw Wisconsin for kicking the can again. But on the other hand, good job with securing a home game against Alabama. Of course, we'll have to see if they'll actually play these Alabama games or keep stringing them along as well.
My guess is they will lose saban soon
You have to schedule home and homes so far in advance that the current coach doesn't really have much say in your OOC scheduling plan. Saban did probably have some say in accepting the neutral site bids, which don't have to be made so far in advance, and he did the right thing. Those neutral site games bring a ton of money to his program and are great for recruiting purposes. Any team would be wise to accept as many big OOC neutral site games as are offered to them, just as we have done many times ourselves.
Might be easier to schedule Alabama than to get Wisconsin to an actual game.
Cancel the damn series already I don't even want to play Wisconsin anymore.
It's a lose-lose situation.
We play Wisconsin and win - great, a middle-of-the-road Big Ten team that always wins the other weakest division in college ball but won't win the conference and loses its over-seeded bowl game.
We play Wisconsin and lose - great, it's ODU and JMU all over again. We're the worst division winner in college ball.
Just cancel the damn series I don't even want to play them. Get Ole Miss or Miss St or aTm or USCe or ffs anyone else.
Now take everything you just said about Wisconsin and put VT there cause right now we've got the same if not worse image to most schools. Things we're nationally notable for recently: losing to odu, losing to jmu, beating osu.
I'M GLAD WE'RE ON THE SAME PAGE heuplek
ME TOO I WAS DRUNK WHEN I COMMENTED SO I COULDNT QUITE COMPREHEND THE IRONY IN YOUR ORIGINAL COMENT HorseOnATreadmill
I didn't realize we actually had dates penciled in anymore for this series.
As others have said. Cancel it.
Maybe we could schedule Clemson/FSU/NC State as a rotating non-conference game (Γ la UNC/Wake this year) instead of Wisconsin. Cause, ya know, they might as well be in another conference at this point and it seems like we play them just as frequently.
If Clemson and FSU were up for that, we'd have 9 conference games already.
Fair enough. Still seems as likely a scenario though...
Dump them!
It really is a shame that it is so hard to schedule quality OOC games without getting screwed over on the deal. This is how we ended up with a 59 year schedule of ECU games.
ECU still found a way to screw us over on that deal, too.
I remember being excited about this series back when I was an undergrad at tech, mainly because my brother lives in Madison. Now it looks like my oldest son will be in college by the time its played. So fucking ridiculous. College football needs some sort of systematic way of scheduling OOC games to do away with all these dumbass scheduling agreements.
I'm in the same boat (in terms of personal timeline), and I realized the ridiculous milestones that this latest delay creates:
-Bitter says this series was originally discussed in 2003, which was between my freshman and sophomore years. If the games are actually played in 2031 and 2032, that would be my oldest son's freshman and sophomore years. (BTW, he's going into 1st grade this fall.)
-Again, discussed while I was a freshman or sophomore. In 2031, I'll be halfway to being in the Old Guard. (Corps alumni are inducted into the Old Guard at their 50th reunion. 2031 will be my 25th.)
-By 2031, there will be no one playing in the games who would have been old enough to see the originally scheduled games (2008-2009). The majority of the rosters wouldn't have been born at that time. In fact, every one of those players is currently in elementary school.
and we'll still have the Commonwealth Cup
I went through Madison for work back in 2012 and thought it was such a cool city and I thought "this would be a fun trip to watch VT play here".
Badgers?! Badgers?! We don't need no stinkin' Badgers!
Drop Wisconsin...pick up more games with West Virginia. Bring back that rivalry.
...or worse, expelled
I ain't 'fraid of no mountaineer, and I'd rather play them than East Carolina or ODU.
I'm OK including them in the mix, even if I'd rather see us play Tennessee.
Organtown is a dump. People (fans) are the same.
Fuckers.
The gifs you use from gify always run out before I get there and all I get to see is blank space without clicking to keep watching on gify. Just an FYI.
Yeah, giphy changed their display paradigm. It seems they're now unusable with this board format. Changed the gif to an image of the character I was trying to reference, because I'm not going to search while at work for a gif of him saying, "Fuckers."
really? this is a test
I hope we put in a severe financial penalty (inflation adjusted, of course) if they try to move this again. We should have been paid twice for this series already.
Screw Wisky! Attempt to dump the whole thing!
