OT: EDSBS Closing Down

Spencer Hall is shutting down his famous blog/persona Every Day Should Be Saturday, but not leaving SBNation:

. Here's his goodbye piece (for lack of a better term) - It's a long, but fantastically good read. Spencer might have the most unique voice in college sports; he's able to capture college football's excitement, complexities, and bizarre paradoxes in witty pieces that are funny, reflective, and somehow always hit home.

As mentioned above, the good news is that he's not retiring. Stephen Godfrey has hinted at some big changes coming to SBNation's CFB team, and we should have more info on Friday when Episode 1 of PAPN 2.0 drops. He's been dropping some interesting hints on his instagram (captions all mention afootballwebsite.com, which links to a different college football article, picture, etc each day). Really interested to see where they're all headed.

On the bright side, The Shutdown Fullcast will somehow keep plugging along, just like the Little Engine That Just Wouldn't Die.

Oh Praise Jesus!

Honestly this was my biggest worries.

Don't get me wrong the annual season opening long form articles Spencer put out were amazing reads, and RIP Hatin' Ass Spurrier, and the long form on Ole Miss Godfrey did was some of the best CFB content this decade.

But I dont think I could have survived without The Internet's Only College Football Podcast.

Also I think Richard Johnson is joining Godfrey for PAPN2.0 which I think will be a fun combo.

EDSBS is one of the best things about college football, and Spencer Hall a legend.

Sad to see it go, but glad that the team is going to be around for...something?

I thought Spencer Hall was one of those old dorms on one of those obscure quads I rarely walked through, the ones where you'd see a random nude guy running through snow at 6am Sunday morning after an allnighter

So many great things on that site. I haven't red it much in the past few years. it is the end of an era, one that I enjoyed. One that I was glad I was the right age for it.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

Fun article. It's interesting to read through the comments from 2010, particularly from SEC fans "VT is the most SEC-like school" "Clemson fans under-perform like their team" both paraphrases, but amazing what a difference a decade can make. Hopefully VT returns to a measure of dominance and the ACC becomes respectable as a football conference ala 2016-2017 season.

Growing up in SC, spending lots of time around Atlanta for family reasons, exposed me to the reality that during our glory years we were one of the only ACC programs that SEC fanbases respected. Most Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, etc. fans I've met, interacted with, or are friends with had a lot of respect for VT. Most Alabama fans I know spoke glowingly about us after the 2009 and 2013 games. It has been weird to watch it shift to where Clemson is a legitimately elite, top program.

As for the ACC, we will need the bottom 2/3 of the conference to invest aggressively in football and actually show up to their home football games for any consistent ACC success in football. 2016 was a great year propped up by a perfect storm of great QB play and new, exciting coaches who brought some serious hype and excitement to their programs. However, the bones aren't in place for most ACC schools to have any consistency. Program consistency is built in the trenches and defensive front 7. That's how LSU has been a consistently winning program despite largely average to poor QB play.

True. Even as the Big East fell apart, there were plenty of SEC boards saying they should grab VT. FWIW, I think the ACC is the right place for us beyond football.

I don't care if the entire bottom 2/3 invest and grow, bottom dwellers are fine, but if Clemson, VT, FSU, Miami are battling annually for top spot (and accompanying 9+ win seasons), followed by up and down seasons from UNC, UVA, GT, Cuse, Pitt, NCSU, and BC, the ACC would be a respectable conference.

Enter Sandman is everything it is cracked up to be, even with the alumni who either jump reluctantly on creaky knees or stand there doing the acceptable substitute of nodding their head along.

As far as drink, I was told to "Rail, rail, and then rail again." This refers to the infamous signature drink of Top of the Stairs, the off-campus bar where a bartender will happily pour one of everything off the cheap rail of liquors into a plastic cup, top with soda and grenadine, and then dare you to drink it. It tastes like cough syrup and an instant investment in regret, but that's college for most people, and is therefore appropriate. Cough syrup isn't necessarily a bad thing if we're talking Triaminic, and oh, dear reader we are definitely talking Triaminic and not NyQuil.

OVERALL GRADE: B+.
*Don't sweat a B+. As engineers and technical types, you have to appreciate a tough grader.
