That 2008 defense was completely re-tooled as well. We lost Flowers, DJ Parker, Xavier Adibi, Vince Hall, Carlton Powell, Barry Booker, and Chris Ellis. We only had Orion Martin, Cam Martin, Macho, and Kam returning. By that Virginia game I believe we had lost Davon Morgan and Cam Martin to injury as well, because I'm pretty sure Dorian Porch was starting safety that game and had a pick.

After we beat FSU at Lane in 2007, I was with my dad and we were driving home from somewhere, somehow forgot about game traffic and got stuck in it. Fortunately the postgame show prevented any overwhelming boredom. Bud got on for his interview with Mike Burnop and it was the first time I remember hearing him talk...just gushing and intense and the words were tumbling out one after another and you could tell that he was more excited than anybody about finally getting that win over Bowden. He had some great body language on the sidelines over the years but I still remember how animated he was in that interview and how playing for him must have been unlike anything else on Earth. Legendary.

I got to talk to him for a few minutes at a Blackberry Smoke concert back in March. Somehow, that's the only time I've been around him. Super chill guy. The defense this year may not be the old Lunchpail's of old, but damnit I expect them to absolutely swarm the ball all year long. Ball out for Bud.

Bud getting revenge and shutting down Matty-Ice in the 2007 ACC Championship Game. I was in Lane earlier that year, in the pouring rain, and I could feel the pain the defense had after that game. The t-shirts they made, the confidence, the determination the D played with in the ACCCG game was reflective of peak Bud. Love you Bud.

This, getting to talk to him and meet him and see him with the players and staff outside a game environment. Although his answer of red velvet cake has haunted me for years.

I want to say it was 05, but we had three of 4 straight games giving up no more than 7 points. And he got on tech talk live and mentioned the defense had work to do.

I'm taking my best BF stories to the grave, but a couple I'll share:
Playing him and Coach Wiles in corn hole at his daughter's wedding.
Before he bought his lakehouse, helping his son move a giant pool table out of his basement man cave across town. There were about 8 of us, all in our early/mid 20's and it was still a sum' bitch!

Never had the pleasure of meeting the man. Absolute legend that deserves his own statue. One that is not incorporated with Beamer's and that statue better be holding a fucking lunch pail.

This one may not be remembered as fondly because it came in such a terrible year for our defense, but FSU last year was incredible. An amazing performance and just embarrass g Willie Taggart and all the FSU fans in front of the entire country on Monday night. I think it was Monday night. They only managed to score 3 points at home.

Nov. 29, 2015 (I think), the night before Fuente's introductory press conference just after Bud has announced that he will be staying on as DC. I'm driving back to Blacksburg and I stop at CVS across from First & Main. There's Bud buying stuff at the counter surrounded by at least three CVS employees all saying "Thank you, thank you" and "We're so happy you're staying." Bud is shaking their hands and I hear him saying "Thank you." I didn't have a chance to say anything to him, but from 20 feet away you could tell not only his impact on the employees but how much he appreciated them and their excitement.

Wasn't on TV but there was a magazine/blog interview article 10+ years ago in July/August with Bud and his fam at Claytor Lake where he was so fired up for the season to start that he ate a June bug that landed on the table during the interview. That made me a Bud fan for life.

I'll never forget the times I saw Bud in his ski boat on Claytor, buzzing by me while I was walleye fishing. I always waved and hollered Hey Bud, and he always smiled, waved and said Hey back. Real smile, genuine guy, it always made my day to get a Bud sighting on the water.

I love frank beamer, but for me, Bud Foster will be the greatest coach VT has ever had. Also, his name is two beers so that doesnt hurt. The legend of legends.

Got to be him running down the sideline losing his shit, almost running over Billy Hite after the goaline stand against UVA in 2004 I believe it was.
2008 when Sturdivant sacked Verica to get us into the ACCCG is what you're thinking of.
Amazing moment. I was in that EZ for that game.
It definitely happened in 2008 too, in Charlottesville
2008 was Blacksburg. I remember my aunt rubbing my head the whole game because it was "good luck." She's superstitious.
Every time he ran down the sideline losing his shit over a defensive play is a great memory, and there are lot of them.
LOVE this one! What game? I'm having a brain cramp.
2008 vs. LOLUVA
Freaking Danny Coale. Gotta love it.
And the first minute and a half, I thought someone had accidentally posted a Danny Coale highlight tape
Man I miss our defense

Savannah St upsetting Michigan in basketball, clearly
Thanks. That was really helpful.
Dude, it was right there in the gif. No need to thank me
When his defense ended up #1 in the nation and we won the 2020 National Championship.....

An absolute virtuoso performance by Foster. He's had others that were as good or better but this will always be one of my favorites.
Kyle Fuller was the human highlight reel that night, but James Gayle played about as well as any DE I've ever seen against the option that night.
The shutouts against UVA in 2011 and 2017. Both times UVA thought they had a legit shot to beat us, and both times they scored 0 points.
I really hope we can extend the streak to 273 so we can call them absolute zeroes
Him straight up out-coaching Tom Herman and Urban Meyer at their stadium with far inferior talent.
I was there in the Shoe. Greatest game I've seen outside Lane.
came here to say this
This!
Attending his 50th birthday party at Claytor Lake. At the time, my ex's best friend was dating a guy who was friend's with Bud's son.
Highlights of the party:
I've never advocated for a comment to go plaid, but here we are.
what's plaider than plaid...I think you may need it for this one!
Win over Ohio State.
And followed by the most epic of gifs: urban meyer sad pizza
I really like that one. (I had looked, and didn't find it.)
VT, the next generation.
I've always loved how much Foster was behind his guys, even when outcomes weren't great.
True, but I liked it better when the outcomes were great. And more often than not, they were.
Among others...
Bud breaking the whiteboard on Thursday Night Football
https://youtu.be/ScfqWPZy4K0?t=7713
Had to look this up because I didn't remember. I am guessing this is it, though it looks like it was a Saturday.
stache game strong
Yep, that's the one. Was watching this on TV and thought nothing exemplified VT defense better than that
I hope this is how they add Bud to the Beamer statue

#BallOutForBud needs to be a thing

One time, Bud Foster got so angry during a game that he tore the bill of his ballcap in half
Running down the sideline like a madman with his play sheet trailing but still attached to his pants.
Easy
15-0

The absolute meltdown and vicious comments after a bad game and dcwilson gets on here.

Swag surfed their way right into a beatdown. Fucking hilarious.
I just watched the replay of that game last night with my fiance (an FSU fan). It was just as beautiful the 11th time around.

Between this reaction
and this look
I have a hard time choosing.
Does this count?
Wow. They delivered some abuse in that game. Those were what you call "tackles".
I think half that defense would have gotten ejected that day if targeting was a thing. Jimmy Williams did actually get ejected that game.

99 Clemson and Syracuse and the win over THE Ohio State.

Favorite moment is him retiring rather than going to another school.
Just erected by a beer vendor in Bburg!
Did the Dr. Pepper vendor object?
