I just looked up the schedule and wow that's a real nut squeeze. We play #5 Duke, #6 Georgetown, #7 Virginia, #11 Notre Dame, #19 Clemson, #20 UNC, #24 WVU, and have the potential to play #1 Wake Forest in the ACC tournament. Jeez

Well, you answered for me when you said "VT soccer". Besides that, it was just a joke. I figured I'd rile somebody up though, but I'm so glad you aren't thin skinned about it or anything.
If you need to know more, I'll say this. I find soccer boring, but I feel that way about several sports that people absolutely love, like hockey and NASCAR, so I know there's a lot of interest in the sports world that I don't share. I watch the US teams in big matches and I will follow the Hokie's soccer teams progress and will watch a match or two if I can get them. I also find the NBA and NFL boring but love VT basketball and football. Go figure. I never played soccer, and had no kids which gets a lot of parents involved, at least while their kid is playing, so it isn't surprising it doesn't grab me.

At some point- really hopefully in my lifetime- one of our 17 varsity sports teams is going to win a national team championship. Why not 2019 Men's soccer? why not? Get hot at the right time, boom. You would think we would have won one by accident by now. It's not budget or commitment or any of that nonsense. Many smaller schools have won team national championships. Let's get it done once before we die please.

Nobody wins a national championship in any sport "by accident". Those "smaller schools" you mention tend to specialize in only one or two sports, and the lion's share of their revenue gets spent on them.
Also, to win a championship, you have to get to a championship match. We've reached the championship round in group sports such as golf, track, etc, but have never seriously contended and have a best team finish of 4th, which sounds a lot closer to 1st than it actually is. As for direct-competition sports, between baseball, softball, women's lacrosse, and men's and women's basketball and soccer, we have made the round of 16 (whatever it's called in each sport) 14 times, the quarterfinals 5 times, the semifinals twice (once each from the two soccer teams), and have never appeared in a 2-team NCAA championship match in any sport. We've lost more than we've won in each of those rounds, which is reasonable considering how infrequently we make it that far in any given sport.

When Coastal Carolina wins a college world series, but Virginia Tech competing in multiple sports in division 1 for 75 years, the past 30 in "major" conferences, yeah you would think the stars would have aligned once. Or is Coastal Carolina- basically a strip mall campus- on to baseball secrets we haven't figured out?

You saw Horry Georgetown Tech, the regional community college if you think CCU is a strip mall. Yes it is a smaller school but they pump money into sports like baseball and golf. But they aren't the only smaller school to win a baseball title.

So you answered my question. Thanks.. yep a baseball national title is just out of reach for VT. Can't do it. Coastal Carolina on the other hand?? They have a nice stadium. Natty is not out of reach for them. VT though? yes, can't happen.

For the record, both times our soccer teams have made the College Cup we lost to the team that won it all. And both times we gave that eventual champion one hell of a fight, with the other team needing some heroics to win.
If we are going to break through at some point, it would not shock me if it was in soccer.

I wasn't being sarcastic. To beat Penn State, Iowa, and Ohio State we need about 4 national champions- to start with. So my statement is true. Top 5 nationally is irrelevant in wrestling in terms of how close you really are. It's not like being top 5 in football.

You see good teams struggling against bad teams in soccer a lot, more than any other sport I feel like. Teams who know they're outmatched typically pack it in with 9-10 guys behind the ball and try to get 1 or 2 counters every game as their offense. It makes it very tough to score for the good team.

Unc first 2 goals should have been better defended. you can't let people run free with the ball in the box. The 3rd goal there was nothing no one could have done about. Just unc got lucky with the ball landing in front of one of their players with a wide open net

Outside of a couple of stubborn moves (baseball & mens basketball), he's really done quite well here in Harrisonburg. He's also crushing it in terms of generating energy and getting quality donations from people. Remember, JMU was an all girls school, so we are only now getting to a place where men who graduated from JMU are leaving large amounts of money to the school when they die. I predict that things continue their upward trend here.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Imagine being a woman who graduated from JMU at any point before 1966 (when it became coed). In that society, women didn't have the same type of pathway to a public career that netted loads of money in the same way that men did. So the studies that JMU has done suggest that those women don't have the type of wealth that would allow them to leave large sums of money to the school in their wills.
On the other hand, men who graduated in the 70's and beyond were afforded clear pathways to success in the public vocational world, those men are only now getting to a place where their wealth is being realized by JMU.
Edit: I know when looking at my post above in a vacuum, it sounds really terrible and even sexist... That certainly ins't where I'm coming from. It's a generational issue that includes women is what I'm getting at.

It was 1-0 when the shot missed. Had to open it up at the end to try to get another good look, and gave up the second with too few defenders back. Good chance it would have been a draw if it gone, or bounced 2 ft farther to the left where we had a runner coming in. Though they also had a beautiful shot that just missed over the bar earlier in the game. We need better ball control/movement on the back end. Almost every chance they had came off a VT defender giving it up.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Seemed to me that our strategy was a little bit too defensive. Basically trying to clear the ball out of our half and hope for a fast break. I think playing for the counter was the right move but we didn't try to build the counter at all.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Counter-point: All their good looks came from defense turning it over trying to control the ball rather than getting it out. Would like to have us get it out and then bring back to build more. First game I've had a chance to watch the team this year (Shout out to 919Hokie for posting it was on!), but wondering if that was the first time we have employed this strategy. Certainly looked like it from the issues we had with their press, but maybe it was the press that we looked like we were not ready for.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Stacking up on defense is a tactic frequently employed by the underdog, to try to drastically reduce the chances of their superior opponent scoring and hoping for a lucky break or at least a scoreless draw. I, too, hadn't watched them until yesterday, but I would imagine we tried it because we were playing the #1 team in the nation, and hopefully it isn't our usual MO.

BC gets red card late in 1st half, but dominates the opening of the 2nd half, scoring a goal to knot it at 1. Hokies finally get something going and go up 2-1 with about 20 minutes to go.

Happened to be at the first half of the game.
A. That in no way looked like a red card.
B. I Had no idea they could VAR things like that in college. Everyone around us figured it was for last defender (which there was one, so no red for that) but to check it anyway to ensure it was correct.
C. Brizz is frustrated with the D and handling presses and rushes at them. And rightfully so.

BC gets red card late in 1st half, but dominates the opening of the 2nd half, scoring a goal to knot it at 1. Hokies finally get something going and go up 2-1 with about 20 minutes to go.
Unbelievable. Hokies give up a penalty right outside the box with under 10 seconds to go and BC puts it away low to tie the game. OT coming up.
Unbelievable. Didn't have a good feeling about that.
Match was infuriating to watch. Up a goal and a man for 50 minutes and you end up with a draw ๐คฎ
Yeah the men's team defense ain't the best
The women's team is on ACCN right now against Duke.
We are in OT with all zeros on the board. 24 fouls. Insanely physical match up tonight.
Hard fought 0-0 OT draw. McGlinn had two insane saves in overtime to preserve the draw.
Big win for the men's team tonight
An additional positive, UVA lost tonight!
And let's give it up for the ladies!
Meanwhile in Mexico:
Wooooooo!!! Fuck Matt Ryan!
Let's go!!!
Turn on the ACC network right now if you can. VT Men's soccer scored 2 goals in 5 minutes to tie the game. 2:30 minutes left.
who's the dumbass that thought Wake Forest jerseys were different enough from white? Because on camera, they look the exact same
Amazing I thought it was over!
OT now. 20 minutes. This is the ACC quarterfinals against Wake.
Holy shit. I had turned the game off after the second WF goal.
10 minutes left then penalties.
No goals in OT. Now Penalties.
New goalie for Wake?
VT saved first PK.
1-0 Hokies
2-1 Hokies after two rounds
3-2 Hokies after three
4-3 Hokies after 3. Either make one or save one to win.
Bad PK. 4-4 through the 5 rounds. Sudden death.
Lost the game. Now have to hope VT is one of the 24 at large bids which should be the case as the #22 team in the current rankings.
What a choke job on the penalties
