The only counter I can offer to that is it was clear we were 100% committed to the run, and that really shortened the game. No, the offense wasn't good, but our game plan also limited our productivity. The first quarter felt like blink and you miss it. And to the staff's credit, they didn't abandon the run. They were going to sink or swim by establishing a run game. Thank God Keshawn King answered the bell.

This team stepped it up and got it done, even after having created a hole for themselves. The running game made an appearance! The defense stepped it up!
There is still much work to be done, but they've got heart.

Bump the fam thread because JC, can we just be the biggest bunch of glum a-holes on the planet and keep the MEH thread alive? For REAL? Is the hopefully 'old' Justin Fuente wearing off on the fans?
VT is 2-1 with a bye week and I suspect we havent seen anything close to their best efforts yet.

THIS. For the love of God, let's not become the MEH fanbase when our team wins. I absolutely hate to see those threads pop up. Just go be miserable somewhere else.

Damn right! At halftime you could have convinced me to bet serious money that VT would lose the game easily. Then they came out and dominated, with a disappointing dip at the end.
This team is going to lose more than a couple of games. Our QB is error-prone, and our lines on both sides of the ball need to find their footing. But for a little while today, VT dominated. That's worth celebrating.

The mood in here is pretty meh, and I feel the same.
My positive spin is there are some good pieces that seem to have emerged that I don't know that we had last season. That is competent DB play, Keshawn King looks like he has a spark that I haven't seen at RB here in a while, and the defense in general looks more disciplined.
On the flip side, does RW look like he's actually regressed? That one pick he threw over a wide open Grimsley I have no explanation for.

A win is a win. They don't label them as GW (good win) BW (bad win) SBW (squeaked by win), etc. They are all wins. Some look better than others. Yes the team has things to work on. They did make adjustments and played the 2nd half. Now we have a bye to work on fixing mistakes and get healthy. Hokie Fam!

Probably will go under the radar but changing up the kicker on kick offer was a huge and the punting game was pretty solid as well, lots landing inside of 20

I'm still waiting for Oscar to bounce the ball off the return man's facemask or helmet and our gunner gets down the field and recovers it for the score.

We came back from down 11. Our players play with a ton of heart. We also have glaring issues. We aren't there yet. We might not have a head coach who can take us there.
You can simultaneously celebrate wins while acknowledging our issues. The fact is, we have major problems in our program. Some of which don't appear to be being addressed. At the same time, our defense is light years ahead of where I thought it would be this season, and the offense is playing through Willis's many, many (far too many) mistakes.
We aren't a good football team. But I still love us.

Sorry if I sounded accusatory. I was trying to further your point, not refute it. Nobody should be satisfied with the product on the field right now, but also nobody should let the game of college football make them miserable. And a day with bad VT football is better than a day without it

I'll tell you something else, that Furman kicker is AWESOME at onside kicks. I've never seen someone do what he did there at the end, I think we need to learn how to do that.

Can't say that I totally agree with your last sentence. The team is young and they seem to play to the level of their competition right now, instead to the level of their ability. Which means that they could be in every single game. I have no idea what to expect for a win total, anything from 10 wins to barely getting to a bowl (I pray for nothing less). It all depends on how they pull together. I hope that they did some growing Saturday. If so, this could be a fun ride.

The only real complaint I have that could be worked on in the bye week is to figure out how to have a power run game. Everything in our run game now is soft and passive and I want to be able to out muscle somebody.
With that said this is a FAM thread and a win is a win. Also, I had the benefit of watching game on delay after already reading the result on the twitterverse. Frankly it wasnt as bad as the reaction. We got behind a team we shouldnt have and came out with a really level headed methodical response in the second half.
I am concerned with the fanbase. Leaving at halftime? That is fairweather fandom and I refuse to defend it.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I disagree with Joe. If you commit to come it isnt asking much to stay. I cant say how often I see people prop VT up as having a next level fanbase and frankly it is becoming apparent it isn't true.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I personally don't blame the fans at this point. The product on the field is terrible. I personally always stay until the clock reads 00:00 but I don't fault fans, especially students who haven't even been around campus when the team was decent, for leaving a game that's frankly just hard to watch.

I used to think fairweather fandom was terrible...
Until I experienced the last 10 years of the Carolina Hurricanes. Sometimes, the only thing fans can do is vote with their wallet, and having that team play in front of a half empty arena for 3 years finally forced the owner to sell to someone who actually cared. Not coincidentally, this year is my first time as a full season ticket holder, not just because of the success they had last year, but because the new owner is putting his money where his mouth is and is actively trying to improve the product on and off the ice, and I'm totally on board with contributing to that where I can.
If you're not on board with the direction of VT football right now, I'm not going to fault you for not supporting it financially.

I can't see King being the next RMFW because he's too small, but had some nice agressiveness/broken tackle toughness in that 15 yard run just before the really long run.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I agree. But the power part starts with scheme and blocking with aggression versus being on their heels. Everything is lateral and delayed and feels a beat slow from the start.

I mean sure...but let's be real here. At halftime yesterday, this entire fan base was done. The team did exactly what it was supposed to do after halftime, and win the game. After watching the other games yesterday, I'm not so full gloom and doom. The games are there for the taking. Yes, it left a sour taste, but now we can build on it and get behind this team.
This is a team, one we haven't seen since '16. They are bonded and behind each other. You know what's worse than last year's cancer locker room? A cancer fan base that creates doubt in a bonded locker room. This team needs us, let's get their backs!

Can't get on board with this one chief. Negativity tends to poison everything around it. If you could guarantee me that the negativity stayed in that thread and no where else, I'd be on board with it. As it currently stands, it's just breeding hate and a lot of long time, really great TKPers are being run off because it is constant negativity around here. We make a fam thread when we win and routinely get people coming from the Meh thread to piss on our little celebration here. Do you have fam posters in the Meh thread?
EDIT: It's also not like the Fam thread posters have enough volume to make a difference. There is 1/4 of the posting activity in the Fam thread that there is in the Meh thread.

The on the field product isn't where the fans, players, or coaches want it to be. But the Furman's, ODU's and Rhode Islands are where you get to work stuff out. I didn't get to see the game, but if they were running it that much (as it sounds), they were probably using Furman as a team to work on the run with.
We need to get something together to beat Duke on the 27th and hopefully they've got enough full speed in game footage to be able to work on getting better. I will never be down on a W, especially when we've lost games like this in the past.
Hopefully the coaching staff can get the players to feel like they can get better and the players will embrace constructive criticism and own up and get better. Ernest Wilford dropped a few passes including a potential game winner against Miami one year...he took that moment and worked on his hands, and barely dropped a pass the rest of his time at VT. Let's hope current players can do something similar (with whatever they need to get better at).

FAM! Here is some more reason for optimism about this team going forward:
- Based off of Foster's postgame comments, it sounds like tyjuan garbutt may be available for Duke which will be a big boon for production and depth at the DE position. Maybe Zion will be back later this year too?
- Hopefully with a bye week, Hazelton will be available as well, adding another dangerous weapon to the WR corp
-Love the improvement at CB/safies , but just as exciting is the depth behind our starters. Remember that we got guys like Webb, Chatman, Hunter, Thompson, Walker, Hawkins developing and improving behind the scenes

We have a good running back in King and our defense played a solid game
and also, the offense scored enough to win the game.
But just barely
Yes, and UVa barely beat FSU. Temple barely beat Maryland. Penn State barely beat Pitt.
A win is a win, and is MUCH better than a loss.
There is no way to defend scoring 24 against Furman who gave up twice that much to Georgia State 8 days ago.
Atrocious offensive performance.
The only counter I can offer to that is it was clear we were 100% committed to the run, and that really shortened the game. No, the offense wasn't good, but our game plan also limited our productivity. The first quarter felt like blink and you miss it. And to the staff's credit, they didn't abandon the run. Why should I have to defend an offense that scored enough to overcome a deficit for a comeback win?
In a FAM thread, no less!
Sir, you forget yourself.
C'mon guys, can we at least keep it positive in the FAM thread....
and also, it was a double digit 2nd half comeback.

Hey people. Enjoy the wins when you get them, ESPECIALLY if you think they will be in short supply later in the season.

Probably will go under the radar but changing up the kicker on kick offer was a huge and the punting game was pretty solid as well, lots landing inside of 20
Parker Romo did a pretty good job with kick offs, but his prancing walk up drives me a little nutty.
Oscar was better than solid, dude is a weapon.

Can we agree that what you are describing is a fairweather fan. That used to be like a curse word in sports.
I guess my point is that students, who get their tickets for free don't have an incentive to stay
They also have nowhere to go. Support your team another hour and a half before starting the next beer pong game.
I used to think fairweather fandom was terrible...

And unless you're a billionaire supporter, cutting of your HokieClub donation isn't really sending all that much of a message.

I've assumed they're eating each other alive over there watching the comment count rise and rise.
It's possible, but engagement is a big piece of how people form and hold opinions.
Nobody is changing anyone's mind by engaging them in the meh thread.
