Listen up! I'm doing 2 days of travel to all the schools in the conference. You're making us bored, we keep having to win all our games to make the playoff, and you are playing like crap. Get it together. Oh, and good luck on Saturday. Where to next?

Makes you wonder if we have decided to replace the ECU series with Clemson. I mean Wake and UNC did it. It's a strong P5 teams on the schedule. I would have to say that this would be a big win for VT football scheduling. Especially the these two schools are building trust with a face to face meeting instead of instagramming the breakup like some schools like to do.

its only a win for VT football if we don't get balled out of our own stadium each year. We are not ready for Clemson, and we really don't need to be proving that publicly right now.

Why would the Clemson AD need to come to Blacksburg for this?
And why would Clemson do this when they already play South Carolina every year?
And why would they do this when - in addition to South Carolina every year - their schedule is either full and/or they also have Notre Dame, LSU, Georgia or Oklahoma on the schedule until 2037?
The only Atlantic ACC schools which make any real viable sense for them to schedule VT as an OOC opponent is Syracuse and, maybe, Wake. The other schools have no reason to schedule VT or have better, cheaper, more attractive local alternatives (like Wake vs UNC or, say, NCSt vs Duke).

You travel to blacksburg for a clandestine meeting with your next basketball coach who is currently at another school just to throw off the flight tracker conspiracy theorists.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Are you saying that he's at the school for other business, or he's in Blacksburg by coincidence? If it's the latter, how does one coincidentally end up in Blacksburg?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I can't imagine a scenario in which he would need to travel to meet with Whit about something.
Maybe he went to the game because he has a connection to someone who plays for us or Duke? Maybe he has family in the area? Maybe he was taking a long weekend with his family in SWVA?
I have no idea, but I don't think that whatever this was (if it was anything) probably wasn't interesting.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
This was not during the game. He was picked up yesterday evening. Could be anything from ACC network contracts to scheduling, though you would think those things would not require an in person visit
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
My mostly uninformed opinion - Venables has a significant buyout associated with his contract if he goes anywhere else to take a DC position, but zero buyout if taking a HC slot. This could be Whit negotiating down the buy-out to put Venables in as DC and as the HC in waiting for when he has the funds to can Fuente.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
This is also a bye week for Clemson which would make this the opportune time for Venables to be traveling anywhere, e.g., interviewing for a HC position. The AD travel could just be a cover :-)
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I know you said it's an opinion but I have to point out that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Whit isn't Venables' agent and in no circumstances would he be negotiating buyouts on his behalf. Secondly, think about the scenario you just described. "Come be the DC under Fuente for one season, knowing that we're firing him after that and you'll become head coach." It's not even close to a feasible scenario.

I don't really know how these things work, but it feels like that could be a phone call?
I wouldn't be surprised if it were more to do with the California ruling, maybe it was a meeting of the ADs and they all congregated on Blacksburg because it's wonderful in the fall????

When the school first opened in 1872, all students were cadets. Participation in the Corps was first made entirely voluntary starting in 1964, meaning until then all football players were cadets aside from a handful of exceptions (former active-duty personnel were exempted from the Corps requirement, as were [I believe] women).

Side rant - They hugely embarrassed VT with the push up robot.
A message (with video attached) I got from VT explained what the robot was for:
"studying legged locomotion which is being developed to help and/or assist those with disabilities to walk as well as replacing humans who have to enter or traverse hazardous environments"
We should've been able to have a small segment explaining/showing this research and how the robot performs in the outside world, then lead into the robot doing push-ups on the field.
Instead, I believe we got made fun of on a short "worst this week" segment on Game Day as well as numerous social media and news articles about how stupid the robot is.

Claws?! If Whit is not a whiskey man, I will change my opinion on him completely. Alcohol is meant to taste like poison and hurt when you drink it! It is not supposed to taste like a refreshing breeze carrying upon it the scent of fruit! If anyone needs me, I'll be in the angry dome!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Pretty sure I had a hard seltzer this past weekend. I wasn't a fan, ... Not sure what I was thinking since I never liked seltzer water to begin with. Tasted like seltzer with a splash of cheap alcohol, and a light fruit afterthought.
I ended up just chugging it and following it up with a beer.
Maybe it's just the section I was in at the game, but the selection at the beer garden in husky stadium was really weak. Hard seltzer, Corona (gross), Coors lite, and various wines. Disappointing. And expensive.

This would be great because you can't convince me that anyone on earth couldn't drink a couple of rails and angrily come to the conclusion that Fuente needs to be fired.

A) I'd bet the house it won't happen - if he wants a HC job he could pretty much pick any opening. Will Jim Harbaugh survive another bad year? Where does USC go if Urban doesn't want to get back into coaching?
B) I love Bud. You love Bud. We all love Bud. He deserves a statue right next to Franks, and belongs in the CFB HOF despite their stupid rules. However, he's also gotta eat a lot of the blame for the defense being this bad.
C) Whit wanted an offensive guy, and he did the right thing by telling Bud that + flying Bud out to meet Fuente and making sure the two could work together. That hasn't worked, and Bud wants to retire. Would he change his mind if Whit offered him the job? Maybe, but once you've decided you're retiring its hard to change that mindset (at least from what I've been told.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
just to clear things up, i wasn't saying Bud would want to coach now - just that Whit told him that they wanted to go with an offensive mind and that he swallowed his pride and tried to make it work, then to hire basically a younger version of himself would sting a lot (if it were me)

Yeah...but there's an argument to be made (based on age & recruiting) that BV is a better choice.
If Whit came in and hired BV right off the bat, Bud would be justifiably upset even if you argued that BV is an upgrade (*ducks*).
If Bud is just seeing the writing on the wall and getting the hell out of dodge, that'd be one thing (and that might be it!) but I'm betting he's just done with coaching.

I guess we aren't competing for fundraising, IPTAY is focused on the average fan/alumni who isn't going to donate to more than one school so maybe Whit is just picking the AD's brain.
Personally, I'd love for Whit to throw some money at someone from Clemson's Athletic Dept who is involved with IPTAY. Maybe grab the #2 person and put them in charge of VT fundraising.

There are headlines out there that read Clemson not worthy now. If they would have some competition to show a "good" win, it lifts the entire conference. The ACC has turned into the Pac12 right now, where if one conf was left out from, it could very well be the ACC when the music stops.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Not that it isn't obvious, but its hard to swallow the concept of Clemson being so far ahead of us & the rest of the ACC is so bad that they're having to do this...
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Also, if that was the case, wouldn't they be more concerned with getting FSU or someone in the Atlantic that they play on a yearly basis up to par? We play each other once every 4+ years if we do t make it to the ACCCG, and even if we clean house and hire BV, we will likely not be in that position for a while now.

To be fair, F$U and Miami have their own issues. Recruiting violations, off field issues, etc. They will be relevant occasionally, again, just because they are in Florida and it cycles back around. But VT holds that "clean program" light to the rest of the country. And if we are up there every year like we used to be, that means more to the conference and the rest of college football than F$U or Miami.
I mean telling F$U or Miami to get their ish right is like telling your kid that is in his room smoking at 12 to clean up his dirty clothes for the 17th time in an hour. He might shove them under his bed to be out of sight, but it's not really doing what's needed.

On the plus side, IF this is why he was in town, (or even not...who knows) at least they recognize it and aren't just thumbing their nose at the rest of the conference. ACCN and bowl revenue depend on a good product on the field. We can't just send Clemson out there to "speak" for all of us.

To me, the turkey bacon and orange cleats comments are the types of things you say to someone when you don't want to tell them the truth.
It's kind of like during a performance review, your boss asking you what would make working better and you say "better selections of coffee" when you really want to say, "I hate it here and I'm dying inside. I would jump out the window if this office wasn't on the first floor"
Not saying there is no legitimacy in the request, but it doesn't really get to the core of what the issue actually is.

I think it was more likely that turkey bacon was on nutrition plans, but not available in the dining hall.
In my mind, the comment sounded something like, "Hey coach, my nutrition plan says I can have hard boiled eggs or turkey bacon to get enough protein with breakfast, but there's no turkey bacon in the dining hall. I'm tired of eating 10 hard boiled eggs a day with breakfast, can we please get turkey bacon too?"
And if that really is the case, I see that as a significant management failure more so than just a player wanting turkey bacon.

Brent V? Pls
Why would Clemson's AD come to VT for us to hire their DC? Seems the travel would be the other way around.
Because it's not a normal transaction. We're trading Fuente, Cornelson, two firsts, and a jet sweep, for Dabo. 2020 is our year!!
twamp.....comment of the year.
- Radakovich
Quick, let's pool our turkey legs and go all out so we can get the best expired Hardee's coupons as a peace offering to give us Elliot or Venables.
Makes you wonder if we have decided to replace the ECU series with Clemson. I mean Wake and UNC did it. It's a strong P5 teams on the schedule. I could handle venables as new HC
Lol. I could also handle something that's virtually impossible and over the top amazing.
I could handle some one randomly giving me ten million dollars for no reason. DO YOU HEAR ME UNIVERSE?!
I would also settle for Saban
We agree to throw the first ACC Championship against Clemson after hiring Venables
Foster's Expiring Contract and 2 first rounders for Coach V seems like a fair trade
Chauffeur tracker season
Are we sure "the guy" was a chauffeur and not a cop?? 🤔
Can confirm chauffeur
My money would be on coincidence, can't imagine Clemson's AD would travel to Blacksburg for a meeting with Whit about anything.
You travel to blacksburg for a clandestine meeting with your next basketball coach who is currently at another school just to throw off the flight tracker conspiracy theorists.
Are you saying that he's at the school for other business, or he's in Blacksburg by coincidence? If it's the latter, how does one coincidentally end up in Blacksburg?
Story here
This sounds more legit than BV2VT.
I can't imagine a scenario in which he would need to travel to meet with Whit about something.

"Come be the DC under Fuente for one season, knowing that we're firing him after that and you'll become head coach." It's not even close to a feasible scenario.
It could cost VT $15-$20M+ to do this. Clemson could easily up the ante to $5M and it would only cost them a few million $$.
And HC in Waiting? Not a chance.
There have been rumors that Whit will take over for Swafford as ACC commish one day....
Or maybe their just colleagues meeting to discuss something.
He's been really impressed with our QB development with Fuente and wants to keep things fresh at Clemson.
One for one swap?
Pls
I guess we'll swap Willis for Lawrence, but I'm not sure if that fixes everything
Coaches, man. Coaches!!!
"How the hell do we fix this shit?"
-Whit to Clemson's AD
this, sadly, is the most likely explanation
Is this the same AD that fired Bowden midseason and handed the keys over to Dabo?
I don't really know how these things work, but it feels like that could be a phone call?
I wouldn't be surprised if it were more to do with the California ruling, maybe it was a meeting of the ADs and they all congregated on Blacksburg because it's wonderful in the fall????
Not if your point is to send a message to your coach to get his shit together
Edit: Moot point. This AD took over in 2012 and the Dabo move happened in 2009 so it wasn't him.
True, that would send a message.
The subtle but not so subtle power move.
No. The current AD (Radakovich) took over in 2012. He was also the guy that hired Paul Johnson at GT when he was the AD there.
Ken Niumatalolo as next Hokies head coach confirmed.
We can field a team with the Corp of Cadets during the transition.
Nah, all football players must be Cadets just like in the good ol days
Was that a thing? I didn't know.
When the school first opened in 1872, all students were cadets. Participation in the Corps was first made entirely voluntary starting in 1964, meaning until then all football players were cadets aside from a handful of exceptions (former active-duty personnel were exempted from the Corps requirement, as were [I believe] women).
Plot twist: Clemson knows the ACC is spiraling downward and the SEC will only take them if they can convince VT to bring the DC market with them.
Maybe we can get Clemson to pay the $15m......
Now we're thinking!!
Getting a cost estimate and plans for a mini-golf course installation.
Think about this for a second. The person that wants something is always the one to travel.
What would Clemson want from us?
No, they cannot have our Horse on a Treadmill!!!!!
With the way things are going, maybe I'm the one that will be in the transfer portal at the end of the season.
Well, you have the right, I suppose.
You already paid your own buyout.
A coach. We have lots of sports other than football.
Maybe Dabo wants Fuente as his OC if we fire him.
But but but he hasn't called plays in a decade. How could he possibly manage? /s
They want the push-up robot
Or maybe they want the otter. Clemson has much better facilities for the guy to develop, and with the right coaching & conditioning he could go pro.
Nah gotta be after the Dorm Bear. He avoided contact pretty well.
Also, the otter is probably killer at laser tag.
Side rant - They hugely embarrassed VT with the push up robot.

London Broil and mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy?
You

Maybe Whit and the Clemson AD are just friends and they were gonna play the River course and then have a rail or two.
I'd love to crush claws with drunk Whit. Drunk Whit seems like a good hang.

Pretty detailed description for a drink you're only pretty sure that you had
This would be great because you can't convince me that anyone on earth couldn't drink a couple of rails and angrily come to the conclusion that Fuente needs to be fired.
There are a lot of people who can't reach *any* conclusions after a *couple* of rails.
Does throwing up in the street outside Souvlaki and deciding it's a good idea to walk to cookout in 30 degree weather with no coat count as a conclusion? Asking for a friend
Wonder if this coaching staff might do better having a couple rails before coaching?
Could they do any worse?
Man, if I am Bud Foster and Whit hires Venables to be the HC after being passed over, I'd be pissed.
A) I'd bet the house it won't happen - if he wants a HC job he could pretty much pick any opening. Will Jim Harbaugh survive another bad year? Where does USC go if Urban doesn't want to get back into coaching?

Well, there is this
Maybe VT would have a special appeal for BV
If I'm BV, a program like VT is an ideal cultural fit. That being said, no way BV leaves Clemson while his children are enrolled there.
*Transfer portal music intensifies*

Timestamp says early in the season last year. Quote checks out.
Urban Meyer on line 1 for you...
Hah, fair but I'm gonna assume Bud is really done with football. Urban just keeps running from scandal to scandal.

oh man, Whit would've gotten run out of Blacksburg if he did...
I thought that was Whit running the ECU AD out of town....
thats all of Hokie Nation
That would imply that ECU ever came to town in the first place.
There's a beach in the background, so let's just say Florida.

I heard Whit was flush with Hardee's coupons #sauces
Don't be shocked if Drive for 25 becomes a version of IPTAY soon.
I think we have a winner.
About time
But why would Clemson want to help us create a VT IPTAY...?
The ACC Network pays all parties. Clemson doesn't want a lot of competition, but they want more than this. Dabo gave his long winded, stat filled defense of the ACC best conference speech not too long ago. Co-ompetition.
Rising tide floats all boats. Clemson needs someone else in the ACC to be relevant to keep Clemson in the national picture for much longer, so might as well be someone from the opposite division, and Miami is the only other option with any sort of history of sustained success.
interesting theory.

*shrugs*
In this random, unlikely hypothetical situation, maybe the AD *is* meeting with other teams.
Again, it's either wrong or its a coincidence IMO.

FSU didn't have sustained success?
FSU is in Clemson's division, and would be a larger impediment in their path to the CFP.
That hasn't stopped the VT fools who think a resurgent Miami would be good for VT.
He was trying to point out a "mistake" in my post when I listed us and Miami as the only teams "from the opposite division" that had experienced any sort of sustained success. FSU is in the Atlantic and therefore not relevant to my post.

It's better for VT if the ACC is successful overall.
What's really important, though, is a resurgent VT.
A resurgent Miami does not help VT. Period.
Fortunately for the eleventy billionth year, they are not yet resurgent
the stronger the conference the better for everyone in it; and the football schools need to balance the influence of the basketball schools
I'm sure they're just discussing how much and which brand of turkey bacon to stock in the cafeteria.
THE TURKEY BACON GIVES CLEMSON A WINNING EDGE THAT WE SO DESPERATELY NEED RIGHT NOW
I thought we all agreed that abomination would never be mentioned again!
Has anyone stopped to think that maybe the turkey bacon comment sprung from religious restrictions or maybe from dietary restrictions? People with alpha-gal, for instance, have to go for turkey bacon if they want anything close (and I use this word very loosely) to the bacon experience. If a kid is an observant Muslim, maybe he requested it so he can join team breakfasts with a clear conscience.
Not trying to start an argument or anything. I just wonder if it's a little more legitimate than people are making it out to be.
Or it's a lot less fat and they're trying to stay in D1 athlete shape
To me, the turkey bacon and orange cleats comments are the types of things you say to someone when you don't want to tell them the truth.

ACC Meetings are occurring at VT.
Does this mean we're not getting Bart Vandelay as our new head coach?
[DON'T SAY SHE'S QUALIFIED DON'T SAY SHE'S QUALIFIED DON'T SAY SHE'S QUALIFIED]

BOO this Man!
This reminds me....I need to watch more women's volleyball on ACCN.
Whit pls.......
Well, was fun while it lasted.
Maybe they are there to discuss a HC carousel swap.
Vick new HC
Venables new DC
Fedora new OC
Did Kill become tainted that quickly?
Kill medically retired from coaching for a reason. He isn't Urban Meyer.
Insert "that's a no for me, dog" meme.
Venables is not leaving Clemson to come be a DC at VT lol
Fine
Vick HC1
Venables HC2, D play caller
Fedora OC
