Great. Got some awesome gifts for my birthday yesterday. My wife made sweet potato birthday pie, because cake is trash. There is a boat show in the community today, over 500 boats to look at. And the weather is great. So will enjoy getting to see how Hooker balls out today.

Thank you. Eating some pie currently.

Numb. I haven't looked forward to this game at all this week. I hate this feeling.

Same. I have to really resist the urge to be a fair weather fan right now.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Like there will be a meltdown on this site no matter what happens, and the site will be down again for at least 12 hours.

As far as the downtime, that wasn't a result of the Duke loss, it hummed along fine in the aftermath, rather a sophisticated DDoS attack that I hope I've mitigated.

Not cool. Glad to know why the site was down.

Seriously? I'm assuming you have alerted the appropriate law enforcement, right?

Are DDoS attacks so common that even a niche sports site can be the victim of one? I really had no idea.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Maybe someone trying to silence the voices of reason.

For the most part DDOS attacks don't hurt major sites anymore as companies with major IT organizations have figured out how to deal with them. So if you want to accomplish anything with your DDOS attack, you have to aim for the smaller players who can't pour millions of dollars into infrastructure.

But to be clear - it's not like a DDOS attack is ever intended to "do" anything. It's simply about the thrill of "woohoo ... I was able to knock that site offline!" It's the kind of thing at this point that amateur hackers work on to hone their programming skills with botnets, so they can learn how to do things like account validators, where the money is.

Expectations are so low I can't help but feel that we will exceed them. It's been a while since the 2003 season and my mind still can't wrap itself around being that bad so I halfway expect to win outright today

This team is WAY worse than the 2003 squad.

Gotta go back to 1992 at least, in my opinion.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

2003 is what you compare this team to? 2003 was definitely a disappointment overall but we had one of our biggest wins in program history that year. Were ranked in the top 10 at different points of the season. This year we might be in the bottom 10. Just my opinion, but I'd say we've had at least 5 seasons worse than that since then.

I totally agree. Objectively speaking there have been way worse Hokie teams since 2003. It's all in my head. 2003 was my first season following tech football. I didn't know what to expect and that downturn at the end of the season had me expecting a loss each game. After that, we had such a long run that I convinced myself that no matter how bad we were, we could win against everyone short of Bama. That's started to wear off so it's beginning to feel more like the end of 2003 for me (almost)

That downturn is 2003 really was bad. The wheels totally came off the 2nd half of that season.

Considering that even in our recent 6-win seasons we scrapped at the end of the season to keep the bowl streaking going, I can see your point. It feels like a free-fall that DOES feel like 2003.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

It was a collapse and I think there was some doubt at the direction of the program after that season, we did lose to UVA, so I will give the OP credit on that. I guess it's easy looking back knowing that everything worked out fine but there was definitely some ??? after that season. But what happened in 04 more than made up for it.

College Gameday just absolutely shat on VT and Fuente.

Miami by a million.

EDIT: I'm getting wings via UberEats for the game...so that should be nice.

That's certainly the easy call, and I can't argue with it right now.

Though I'm not sure how you can blast Fuente for the "culture" of the defense. He kept Bud and the staff on defense, and paid them.

Culture is top down. The guys from the old regime were still dogs in 2016 and 2017. Now it's almost all Fuente guys and these guys don't have the same fight and dog that the previous guys did. Bud isn't blameless in this, but it's absurd to put the defense in a vacuum and remove Fuente from receiving any blame.

Keep thinking about two games from 2016: @ND where we came back from a 17 point deficit and the bowl game where were down 24-0 at halftime to Arkansas and ended up winning 35-24.

Current team would fold like a cheap lawn chair if they were put in either one of those situations.

D is on bud. When they do well you put it on bud, not Fuente. Now they're crap - thats on bud too. The lack of fire and effort on d is bud.

"I play real sports, not trying to be the best at exercising..." - KP

Bud put great, tough defenses on the field since I was 3/4 years old through 2017, you tell me what changed in 2018 and 2019? These are almost exclusively Fuente guys now. That is the difference. Maybe Bud has not had his usual impact between his pending retirement, off field stuff, etc. but he didn't forget how to coach. This team quits on both sides of the ball when they face adversity with regularity. That's consistent throughout the whole roster, that's culture, and that starts with the head coach.

In my old job, one of my coworkers used to be the hardest worker of the group. When he was passed over for a promotion, his work ethic significantly declined.

Part of it maybe Bud going in DGAF mode after he was passed over for the HC job in 2016. That sense of closure (it meant he would never becoming the head coach at VT) may have taken his edge away from him. 2016/17 was filled with upperclassmen so it didn't really show until 2018 when the starting lineup were primarily Fuente era recruits.

Bud's job is to build and manage a strong defense.

I find it weak sauce to give him a pass and blame Fuente. They're BOTH responsible for the defense, and Bud a little more.

I'll give you recruiting since bud was never great at that. But there is a reason bud is retiring. He is running out of gas and it's time to retire. He is the goat but all things must pass. The original statement is that the d is buds deal, and it is failing. That's mainly on him.

For posterity - here's the College Gameday smackdown. :(

Meh, was something said on Gameday? Asking for a friend.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Well it's a beautiful day and I have a long list of yard work to do so the plan is to do that until the game. If the first quarter goes poorly then I am going to walk over to Dragon Hops for a beer and enjoy the sunshine. It is on the dog walking loop so she has determined that it is her bar and tries to hang a right into the place every time we walk by regardless of time of day.

I would love to see the Hokies win but am prepared for another lackluster showing. I will feel a lot better if Hooker is allowed to throw early on even if the results aren't great. I feel like you cant improve if you are never allowed to get in game experience.

Looking back this game was the last time I felt excited about the trajectory of our program.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

I think we're going to look kinda dumb and miami will use their finger and thumb to put a shape of an "L" on their foreheads.
--Smashmouth

I wouldn't go so far as to say he'll get the W because we have a lot more going on, but I have a crazy feeling that Hooker is going to provide a spark.

... if Fuente will actually give him a fair shot and not yank him at the first sign of adversity.

If you play it, they will win.

I feel alright. I think we hang with them for a while. Their offense is not as good as Duke's and our defense will not quit so quickly because Bud Foster is a man with pride. I am anxious to see how Hooker does and expect more from King. We have been backed in a corner, shamed, and made out to be a joke, so I am hoping to see us come out with some fire. Also feel that if today is a repeat of last week, I may have a hard time watching games from here on out. Tough to watch what you love suffer.

I feel like mowing the lawn and working instead of watching.

Gameday spent two-three minutes talking about how bad we are.

I would like Whit Babcock to take step one in rectifying the financial situation this program is in by spending his time not watching the game, but download Squarespace and build a simple, easy to use website for donations / Drive for 25 / The Hokie Club. Take that one simple step, master that detail and then build from there.

Is coronavirus over yet?

This is perfect

I feel like THill will get an unsportsmanlike penalty or two. One for trying to yank Hooker's bad arm out of socket. And probably one for trying to start some sh!t after a play is over like he did against UF.

Basketball starts soon!

My expectations are so low that I pretty much can only be pleasantly surprised. Hoping Hooker can spark the offense, and that last week will inspire the defense. I would love to beat Miami as I might honestly hate them more than any other team, but I could leave this game encouraged if we remain in the game throughout even in a loss. I'd just love to see us not fold like a lawn chair in the face of adversity. That would be a very encouraging sign.

Hello, you've reached HokieJim. I'll be out of the house today doing something fun and enjoyable with no access to TV or internet. I'll check the score when I return and if the Hokies stayed within 2-3 scores and had less than 3 turnovers, I may consider watching a replay. Please expect a delayed response.

Class of '02. GO HOKIES!

Nervous.

Please surprise me with some offense and defense that's effective.

That said, the flag is up, and I'll be watching live. Because it's what I do.

Yep. Sitting here in my Hokies gear, waiting for the game to start.

Sitting with one of my oldest friends in our gear and getting ready to snap the heads off of a pile of fresh Louisiana shrimp. It's the Hokies, man, and we'll be watching.

That shrimp sounds amazing. Louisiana food might be my favorite in the world.

Nothing better than a lagniappe of cajun food.

Taking wife out for early dinner. DVR will be on so can watch low or highlights later. All to keep blood pressure under control.

My Cane wife and I are watching at our Cane friend's house. I'm bringing a fresh bottle of bourbon. I have no illusions of bringing any back home.

Now I'm looking forward to seeing how the evening worked out for you

Giving our dog, Beamer, a pep talk. We couldn't even get him to come out of the bedroom during the Duke game.

First off, ouch. Second, Lee Corso needs to bow out gracefully...last season.

Nothing to do but go out and prove them all wrong. LET'S GO!!

Corso can stay as long as he wants in my opinion. If anyone is getting upset about an increasingly senile man's picks or football opinions that is squarely on them. Just enjoy his presence and humor while we still have him.

I'm not upset, just embarrassed for him. It's like Clint Eastwood at the republican convention that one year when he had that conversation with a chair. No one wants to remember Clint that way.

That College Gameday segment was pretty damning. I totally agree that Fuente just isn't a fit here. Sometimes, unfortunately, things just don't work out.

Not feeling great at all about today (honestly think we get boatraced and we look like GT on offense.) But I will watch to see Hooker in his first start and if he can create a spark. But at this point I just want to get through this year and hit the reset button.

Number one, I stopped watching games live on TV this season (watch the reply after the kid is asleep). That helps a lot. Number two, this is a backs against the wall scenario if there ever was one. If the team doesn't respond in this game with all the storylines going on, then we have our answer. Strangely tho, I expect them to respond and ignore what all of us think. We shall see.

This aged so well. Painfully well, but I'll take it!

I'm a little excited because we can turn this entire ship around today. We pull of the upset here and we're back in business. 6-2 is good enough to win the Coastal most years. GT is more of a mess than we are (right now), we still own UVA til further notice, UNC is inconsistent, and all of a sudden our schedule doesn't look so daunting. How about a potentially top-15 ranked Wake Forest coming to Blacksburg? Sure, we can beat the Deacs inside of a lit Lane.

Of course, if we lose, it's man overboard. *Gulp*

all of a sudden our schedule doesn't look so daunting.

I literally lol-ed because we have the easiest sched in the country and it is, in fact, daunting to this team.

You know what? I'm back to my "just enjoy each game in a vacuum" mindset and I have a good feeling about this game. VT takes the win in an exciting game. This will be the first game that VT fans actually enjoy in a year. Then the game will actually start, the fantasy will evaporate, and I'll drink my sorrows away...

Weirdly i feel confident

Danny is always open

Everything points to us getting boat raced. However, college football is mercurial. As soon as the bandwagon hops on - good or bad - something changes. That's why upsets happen even when teams have far superior talent.

Honestly though, I don't know what to think. I will say i think it all hinges on Hooker. If he plays well and gives the team confidence and energy this could give the tram a shot of confidence. If not (or if we limit him so severely we don't give him a reasonable chance for success) then I could see our effort be lackluster.

Just like last week, I feel that a football game will be played today.

Silver lining: betting ATS all year on the Hokies has PAID this year.

Surely you mean *against* the Hokies

I do. "Against against" sounded weird.

Full-on Fall Wedding Mode... engaged.

I'll score some points with Mrs Leonard for not looking at my phone during the service, because I don't want to look.

Leonard. Duh.

Let's just get this over with...

The Auburn - Florida will be a good alternative for anyone looking to switch channels.

I feel great. My bold prediction for the season was:

We drop 2 of the first 5, then go undefeated and play the game of our lives against Clemson to win the ACC championship. We then loose badly in a bowl to a Big 10 12 team. All according to script...

Let's Go!

VT keeping Clemson out of the playoff with an ACCCG win is the best timeline possible at this point. I might die of happiness.

2026 Season Challenge: TBD
Previous Challenges: Star Wars (2019), Marvel (2020), Batman (2021), Wrasslin' (2022)

Will be watching some modified racing instead. Will keep up using Andy Bitter' twitter. I feel like Hooker will put us in a few different but good positions. Hokies win.

uva sucks

No optimism to win . optimism hooker gives this offense a spark to this team

Rocking the dad VT golf shirt, bout ready to demolish a Penn Station Italian after a really long workout this morning. Dunno. Nice weather in Chicago. Daughter's homecoming dance is tonight....

When does the offseason end and I get to see the Hokies play? Man, the boards have been dead. Can't wait for the season to get started.

Not funny. Not funny. And now the baby is upset.

First game is at Clemson on November 5th, Coach Mike Young's debut. Should be fun to see how we do without Buzz.

Is sophisticatedly boozy a feeling?

This team has talent, so there is a small possibility that they will rally around Hooker. I'm hoping for a chance to win the game in the 4th quarter.

Probably better than I should.

For me to feel good about this game I need to see a couple of things (a win is not necessarily one of them).

  • Toughness in the run game.
  • Effort on the defense even when things are hard.
  • Discipline on both sides of the ball.
  • Explotation of oppournities with respect to play calling. Playing it "safe" will not cut it for me. We're not likely to win this game. Going down playing it safe with 3 and outs in an innefective run game will not do it for me.

Basically, I think we're going to lose but I don't want us to look like losers doing it. I want effort and grit. If things go wrong, they go wrong.

Fuente's seat doesn't get any cooler with a conservative looking loss. May as well throw everything we have at it.

Go Hokies!

Im feeling something again

The taste is so divine
A chemical come alive
Welcome to your vice
Good luck with life
'Cause you can't
You can't
You can't kill me that easily

Expecting to lose by 28+. This is a strange feeling.

It's 2:50, 40 minutes for kick and I just remembered we have a game. And now I'm filled with dread and sadness
Go Hokies...

VT is playing a football game today?

Hooker will need to take advantage of the play fake, make the run an option every time and one read gos.

Not gonna be pretty but may be able to slow down the Miami D.

Defense has got to tackle and play better in space.

Ugly looking pursuit in the past 2 years.

Not going to be a good one today.

I will be drinking white claws, because I will hate myself more afterword.

Gobble Gobble!

I feel good. Zero expectations- I love the team and I'd like to see kids playing with reckless abandon. Hit someone.

Leg for you sir - that's a deep cut!

"I play real sports, not trying to be the best at exercising..." - KP

Aggressive and physical. The offense and especially the defense played with more violence today. Something that was quickly becoming the biggest concern. There were some old school hits laid by the defense. I also thought the blocking looked more physical. I hope to continue to see us get more physical from week to week.

Some players are beginning to emerge on defense. Tisdale is the real deal so far. Conner is old school, love his play. Farley is quickly becoming a phenomenal corner and his tackling has actually been improved this year.

My gut says that Cornelson has to have a quarterback who is a duel threat or he's lost with play calling. The play calling was better today but there are still issues.

Against RI I look for the offensive line to work on their road grading. I want to see violence on both sides of the ball again. I want to see us outclass them the way we should and continue to get HH work throwing in a game.
