Notre dame uses the sky cam for plays starting this year. It was really poorly received for obvious reasons, so it seems they have went away from it for the most part until now.

So if you are a LB/CB you recognize that the inside guy is not eligible and that you should be looking for a route from the outside WR or a run (b/c the inside guy is clearly a blocker). It tells those guys a ton.

In spite of what the commentators said, Turner was a yard behind the line of scrimmage on my screen (looking at the hashmarks).
And so was Hazelton. They both had their heads on the "butt of the tackle" who was 1/2 a yard of the LOS. It was an accurately called penalty.
Off the line means lining up in the backfield. Lining up in the backfield is 2 yards or more off the line. Anything closer is considered "on the line" of scrimmage.
Edit: to further clarify, they were both one year behind the line of scrimmage, or in the eyes of the officials, "on the line" of scrimmage.

You see this sometimes bite you in the ass with linemen "lining up in the backfield", which means they are more than 2 yards of the line.
We all know the o line is supposed to line up on the los, and if you look again haze was lined up pretty close to where the tackles were.
The way Fuente is arguing I don't think it was over one yard and I don't think he thinks that's the rule to apply (right or wrong I don't know) but we will find out more after the game. Radio guys wondering if he had already had that formation run by officials

-Corny needs to get McClease and Keene involved more with the run game. Its way too predictable with Patterson. Plus it looks like he's calling his own number too much on some of the reads so maybe just switch to handoff plays instead of reads.

Arguably Bud's biggest in-game flaw. He's done this repeatedly over his career, including 12 years ago when I sat through a cold downpour in Blackburg and he let Matt Ryan march up the field for 2 scores.
That last offensive possession and the last defensive possession were both a microcosm of where we are right now as a program... just not good enough.
I'm super proud of how the guys played today, but that was a horrible way to lose a game.

The refs sucked all over, we got the benefit of some calls too. But yeah they seemed to step up for ND when it mattered.
3 back to back bullshit calls which prevented tech from getting a short field. Flipping the field for ND half way through is a game changer.

Corns pussy playcalling in the redzone and Bud rushing 3 which is basically removing 3 players from our defense is just a soft way to play both sides of the ball.

We win this game by 14 had Corn been able to do anything remotely creative with QP in the two weeks before this game. Just absolute garbage. Offense was unable to do anything all game long.

I don't get it either. They ought to be able to get some passing game going with plays that look like the run. Kyle Shanahan could take this offense and win about all the games on this schedule. Everything goes off of the run, quick hitting play action, use the jet sweep but run the option out of it and the occasional deep ball. That would have won this game.

Absolutely this one hundred times over made Notre Dame look bad for most of the game defense kept us in there but can't help feel that with hooker we win this with what he can do with his arm. That said QP deserves credit for doing some good stuff today on the road against a good defense.
I hate prevent defense it killed the game and made the draw run an easy play and deablo took a horrid angle on book on that play

So done with the prevent defense to close games. We pressure the QB all game and make him look like ass and then let them walk down the field in prevent to lose the game again. Put extra pressure on the secondary to prevent openings while we had two backups in the game already and then a third for the last play. Three man rush from inside the 10 yard line really threw me. Meant no one on the end to disrupt Book strolling into the end zone.
We had our best two cover corners out of the game late in the game. The prevent defense did not work in the end, but my guess is that Bud choose to increase the number of defensive backs to make up for that short coming. The strategy nearly worked if you consider how ND faced quite a few 3rd and 4th downs on that final drive and was pushed to under 60 seconds before scoring,
BTW, I do not believe that ND intentionally delayed scoring until that late when they needed a TD to win.

You just can't go prevent with a tired defense on 1st and 10, especially on their 20 yard line. Feels like we were happy in the fourth to try and steal a win, with our third string quarterback. Fuente deserves a lot of shit for pretending hooker was okay. If hooker was playing we win this by 200 or 400000000000 points.
I'm a little disappointed we couldn't get more going on offense but losing to the scum that is ND is the worst part. I am happy to see a pulse tho, that is a huge relief but losing this one is a punch in the gut.
I don't blame the players in the slightest for this loss. This is squarely on our incompetent excuse for a coaching staff. Cornelson needs to go and this whole conservative as shit late game defense is so frustrating to watch

Wow, the overreaction is nuts...a month ago we got housed by Duke and today we lost by ONE point to Notre Dame with our back up QB. Patterson's limitations were on full display today, but the team didn't quit...unfortunately they just couldn't hold out. Additionally there were some TERRIBLE calls out there today (namely Chatmans pick being overturned). If Hooker plays this is a easy win. I question some of the play calling, but this team is getting better every game. I can easily see us winning out the rest of the way.
Wake next week will be a huge test of where we really are can't say Notre Dame impressed at all today hopefully they turn up big time against wake to make up for it we need the terror dome rocking next week

We lost this game because our offense scored 13 points. The prevent defense at the end was frustrating, but you can't say our offense wasn't the root cause of the loss.
Why is it so important, at this moment in time, to push an agenda?
I see a lot of hope out of this outcome.
QP has a LOT of development ahead, but that should surprise nobody. We are a young team that depends on heroics right now. But all of these players are going to get better.

If your offensive staff can't dial up more in the two weeks leading up to this game than QP could execute coming off the bench having had no snaps at all with the 1st team, I'm sorry but that's just inexcusable. We could lose a game 3-0 and some people on here would be blaming the defense for allowing them to get in field goal range.

The offense didn't lose that game. They burned time off the clock, got a few first downs, and we punted it deep into Notre Dame territory.

I'm not defending the prevent, I'm defending this idea that because the last drive was on defense that the whole loss is on them, when the offense was miserable for 98% of the game.
Chris I don't blame our defensive players at all. They pitched a 2nd half shutout and the refs, our OC and DC conspired to take their victory away from them....the O was blah and Bud refused to force the issue....just sat back and waited for Book to make a mistake...

Agreed. And I think everyone's missing the big picture: this isn't a 10-win season where a loss ends your season. This game means nothing for the ACC race and we were playing the #16 team on their home turf. Get some experience for for the young kids, heal up the injured, and focus on winning the next 4 games. I'm proud our boys were winning this game with a minute to go!!
Great strategy but Wake and Pitt are playing better than ND right now....moral victories are only good when your team isn't the reason you didn't get an "actual" victory....

Bud absolutely crapped the bed on the last drive, but ND shouldn't have even gotten the ball back. We also had 2 INTs and a defensive score.

That last series with 29 seconds and 2 timeouts. The series from the like 13 when we try to throw to the end zone twice, then QB run, which was the most predictable play of the game and also wrong.

Idk what great play calling looks like. I felt like we were overly conservative at the end of the UNC game, but I thought they let QP open it up a little bit today. Didn't work out, but it didn't seem very predictable or too conservative to me.
I invested little emotion and really thought we would get runn over! It's all good. Let's win the Costal!
Winning would have been awesome, but wouldn't have changed how erratic and stubborn so much of the offensive play-calling had been in the game. This version of QP Smash is not a viable, long-term winning option unless there is a TON of refinement in the passing game, IMO.
Players did all they could and coaches didn't help them out. Fuente and co. haven't needed to get a signature win to keep their jobs, so why start now? It's so frustrating because this team flashes at times like they can exceed expectations...and then they don't. A 10-2/9-3 season turns around program perception and (in theory) helps to fix the basement-level recruiting that they are currently doing. It sucks to see that opportunity slip away.
In regard to recruiting, IMHO, a win in this game would have been great but this loss is not a back breaker. It was a close game that I a good recruiter could sell to a recruit ("A player like you could change the outcome of this game. We need you,")
There were several plays where I thought Quincy actually saw the play and understood and took his time but the O-line NEVER opened up where it should. Am I wrong?
Wish both our starting corner backs weren't out for the game. Oh and I wish our starting quarterback was able to play at least a few series. Really wish we had our starting punter. Would also be good to have another year of experience on both lines. Would have been nice to beat a ND team that was in the playoff hunt a week ago, while we were trying to fire Fuente. Would be nice if our players grow from this and use it to make the team better!

Just my quick take:
ND ran 91 offensive plays to VT's 63. The defense made Book, Kmet and Claypool look pedestrian for the vast majority of the game. Despite the 28 play difference, ND TOP was only 32 minutes, 4 minutes more than VT. The offense didn't look great but I think HH and QP are going to be studs in the future. Hell the whole team is really starting to play great IMO. Just to put the age into perspective, ND has the same amount of seniors on their starting 11 on defense as we do on our entire team. Damn proud of those guys today!

After watching them tonight I feel like it's almost a lock to win out the rest of the season, but that's just my opinion.
Tonight's game proved to the team they have the ability to win the remainder of the regular season games. Hopefully they use tonight as motivation to do so.
Honestly, pretty much nobody thought we had a chance but the team proved them all wrong. Its gut-wrenching how we lost but its also a glimmer of hope. This team is leaps and bounds from where it was at the start of the season. Lots of ACC play yet and still alive for a birth in the ACCCG.

They fought and came 30 seconds from pulling off the upset with a limited offense, terrible officiating, and a worn down defense. I wanted to win that one as bad as anyone, but let's keep things in perspective here. Now stay pissed off and go take the Coastal.
All this is true for a game like ACC-C against Clemson....the underdog is driving for a chance to tie or win situation....today the underdog was outplaying the favorite for 3/4 of the game....and then our coaches pooped their pants on both sides of the ball....you really don't understand the fanbase's frustration?
Oh I 100% understand the frustration. I'm frustrated too. We lost a game that we should've won. Playcalling was bad throughout. We had it in the palm of our hand and they took it from us. But you can be frustrated and still not go full doom and gloom when you lose a game that was chalked up as a loss before the season started. Maybe I'm the only one, but I feel much more confident about these last 4 games than I did before the game.
I'm genuinely interested in how people should respond on a football forum. Fans = Fanatics. People have a lot invested and I think it is perfectly fine for people to express their frustrations on a VT forum if there is no blatant hostility and so forth. "Doom and Gloom" was mentioned. Doesn't matter if it was chalked up as a loss. If anything using that as an out is a shitty reason to call out people that have some complaints or misgivings on what happened tonight. I feel bad for anyone we play from here on out. This team has snapped and have a fire under their ass WAY sooner than I thought possible honestly.

Biggest concern is the offense without Hooker! He makes the coaching look better! QP just is not ready as a QB.
I really think QP was ready to explode several times but the O'line just didn't open anything up for him. He was extremely calm and calculated for the most part. He was calm and collected from what I saw on the couch. He didn't really force too much and if he had some holes he would have made it more rough for ND than he already did. I'm really excited for the future.
