Hadn't seen it posted on here yet so I thought I would put it out there for anybody that was interested.

Hokie grapplers handily beat the 9th ranked Missouri Tigers 29-10.

Based off what I have seen on here I am surprised this is considered an upset - thought we were a wrastling school now

Danny is always open

It is we are a solid 10-15 team this year but when is fully healthy team they are a solid 5-6 team in the country

We were ranked several spots below them in the polls and our best wrestler (and reigning national champ) is taking an Olympic redshirt, yet we beat them convincingly. That sounds like an upset to me.

Also also i would take this this win with a grain of salt mizzou didn't have 133 wrestle and their top 5 141 guy is injured

Tech won all the toss up matches so Mizzou didn't put anyone out at 133. Don't forget the Hokies were shorthanded last year with McFadden and Miller both out during the dual meet.

We have to look at what string wrestled in each match not only injuries.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. ๐ŸŽฃ

I dont follow wrestling that much, so my stance has been us winning is never an upset, we are a top dog now.

In wrestling, "top dog" = "top 3" and that's about it. Penn State, Ohio State, and Iowa have combined for the last 12 national team championships, and if you toss in Oklahoma State and Minnesota you're covered all the way back to 1989. NCAA wrestling's top tier is far thinner than in football, so even though we've been finishing in the top 10 pretty regularly over the last decade or so, we aren't all that much closer to contending for national championships. Hell, most teams that win championships include at least 2-3 individual national champions to help them score enough points, and we only just earned our first-ever individual wrestling national championship this past winter with Mekhi Lewis at 165 pounds. Progress, for sure, but we still have a long way to go.

Yep

Sadly, we are probably closer to climbing that mountain in something like soccer than we are in wrestling. Those top teams would be a tough match for the rest of the Top 10 combined.

21-22 Tech is gonna be making some podium runs

And we'll still be a fairly distant 3rd, at best, in the national standings.

The teams who are legitimate national title contenders have entire rosters capable of making individual podium runs where the expectation is that they are finishing at worst Top 3 in the country. I mean we could conceivably climb to the top of the 'everybody else' category, but we have a very, very long way to go before we are in a position to break into the legitimate elite ranks of the sport.

No, I like our progress in soccer the past 2 years, but college soccer is complicated, and my rant would require a whole separate thread.

We are much closer in wrestling, and we've been climbing the mountain steadily, and slowly. I fully expect to keep competing for recruits in NJ and Ohio against B1G programs, and winning those battles on the mat in the next 3-5 years.

This coming from a VT program that almost got eliminated altogether when Brands left for Iowa.

Was this match broadcast on the ACCDN by chance? Is there any way I can watch it on TV?
