Also 56-94-1 against top 25 in general, with only 1 top 5 win against #3 Miami in 2003(lol).
I've been a VT fan since 2013, and while we've had some good wins against top 25 teams since, this is just depressing.

My last fall as an undergrad; that game killed my first iPhone in the rain. Totally worth it!
Mine got water in the headphone jack and I thought it was toast because I couldn't hear anyone's calls until the next day. Definitely worth it.
I think that stat sounds more depressing than it is. There's only been 8 games at Lane against ranked teams between 2009 Miami and 2019 WF:

there's a cultural thing under late beamer that seems have been carried to the fuente regime - the penchant to be a really gritty away team, like often times punching above their weight gritty, but a super soft home team. it's been like this the entire decade.
Yep. This stat definitely leans more to do with the ACC generally being pretty crappy more than anything else. Like you're not getting multiple ranked teams in the conference every single week and if you do, there's also a chance you won't play said ranked teams at home. Look at those teams bluehokie2006 listed. Only 2 are from the Coastal, which we play every year. And in this decade, Clemson has been the class of the ACC, consistently ranked highly, but due to conference alignment, we rarely play them (or FSU, who is traditionally good and usually ranked).
So there's more going on here than VT just not being able to win. It's a combo of the ACC's strength and just general scheduling quirks (ie X team is ranked but we play them on the road that season instead of at home)
Would be good to see how many games we've had an opportunity to win.
The 3 that were close are 2012 FSU and the Duke and UNCHeat games from 2015. FSU was classic D playing their nuts off while the O couldn't quite put enough points on the board. Both the 2015 games went into OT.
Plus we had a fighting chance against Ohio State until they broke Brewer. We led at the half of last year's BC game before we did our usual 2018 move of rolling over in the third quarter.

I mean sure our top 5 record isnt great but literally nobody's is. They're top 5 teams for a reason and typically beat their opponents. I think that entire record thing is really overblown. Look at it this way, we beat osu the year they won the natty and that doesnt count towards our top 5 wins
We are 1-0 at home vs ranked teams TODAY. Nothing depressing about that.
Anyone's record vs Top 5 or Top 10 should be bad.
I feel like anything before 1995 to 1999 is sort of irrelevant.
Find out what our record is starting in the 90's when football really became a thing and see if it differs.

Bad? Yes. 1-31 bad? No. It seems like every time we play a top-5 opponent, they show a graphic of worst records against top-5 opponents among the P5, and we're always among the 3-4 worst in the category.
And by the way, since the bowl streak started, we are 1-18. A sizeable majority of our losses to elite competition have come since we became relevant within college football.
In any case, we just beat a ranked team and it wasn't even all that close in the end, and only need one more win for bowl eligibility with 3 games remaining. Oh, and if we beat Pitt and UVA we're guaranteed to win the Coastal for the first time in 3 years.
That stat is going to make it that much sweeter when we take down Clemson in the ACCCG.
I'm going to go ahead and say this is the wrong time to be depressed about any particular silly stat that a commentator dug up today.
We came close to beating #16 Notre Dame last week, and we beat #22 Wake Forest today.
As others have said, the only stat I care about is that we went 1-0 this week.
Time to look forward to next week.
If you have only been a fan since 2013 then how is this depression, you missed the good years. you only know one 10 win season, not the streak of them.
Maybe because you didn't live the good seasons you didn't see how it was a lot of beating up on bad teams and losing to the good teams. We just didn't have many good teams on the schedule.
Since the start of the BCS in 1998 VT and Nike are the only two schools to play for an NC or playoff game thay haven't won an NC previously. We are the upstarts, the scrappy little guy, but that means a lot of losses to the big boys.
