VT Ranked #24 in CFP Rankings

Not shocking to see, pretty expected IMHO.

EDIT: Current projection is Orange Bowl vs. PSU.

If you told me after the Duke game we'd be playoff ranked going into rivalry week I'd seriously ask you to pass which drugs you're taking

This year, man....

We're back where we belong, y'all!

That's quite a list of traditional powerhouses.

We put the K in Kwality

How are we behind two 4-loss teams? The only game we've really gotten our asses waxed was against Duke

How is App State behind so many?

I do art stuff.

I don't think App State should be any lower than 22

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

I'd imagine it's because, even though they are FBS now, their schedule still looks like that of an FCS team. Wins over ETSU, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Louisiana, UL Monroe, south Alabama, Georgia State, Texas State. And they lost to Georgia Southern 🀒.

7 of those 8 wins you listed were over FBS competition, and while Georgia Southern sounds like a bad loss, they're one of the better programs in the Sun Belt, and they run the triple option so that is somewhat of an equalizer just like it was for GT.

But other than the Louisiana schools, the other teams all joined FBS in the past decade, with several of them not actually existing 10 years ago.

Iowa State is the best 4-loss team in the country. They have lost to Iowa, Baylor, Oklahoma St, and Oklahoma by a combined 11 points. USC is debatable.

This is fair, but Iowa State has also looked pretty unimpressive against mediocre competition as well.

I think they are interesting in that you could argue for them being overrated and underrated at the same time. For example, I believe A&M is also a four loss team, and they likely will finish with five losses, but those five losses will be to four legit CFP contenders (Bama, Clemson, Georgia, likely LSU) and a ranked, very talented Auburn team. I would venture that A&M would be favored on a neutral field against Iowa State.

The second FCS game is probably weighing us down a bit.

Beat UVa, and that will start to clear up.

Against the current top 25:
VT is 0-1
USC is 1-2
ISU is 0-4

VT has 2 bad losses. USC has 2 bad losses. ISU has no bad losses.

Tbh, VT's record isn't top 25 worthy. They haven't beaten anybody and loss to 2 bad teams. But it's the way the played the last 4 games that have given them recognition.

You mean currently ranked teams? Wake dropped from #19 after losing to us and Clemson.

It's what I expected... but it's good and bad. I was hoping for a little more "room for error".

If I understand Orange Bowl selection correctly, we'd need to beat UVA and then either beat Clemson or remain ranked after losing to Clemson to guarantee our spot. Otherwise, they could take ND ahead of us if no other ACC team (outside of Clemson) is in the CFP top 25. Could be wrong.

They can't take Notre Dame in lieu of an ACC team. They can only take Notre Dame as an ACC opponent.

(If I am remembering correctly)

I do art stuff.

You are wrong.

Notre Dame cannot take the ACC spot in the Orange Bowl.

We'll move up if we take care of business this Friday. Uva is still in the receiving votes category in the AP, so it's gotta count for something.

We could be 21-22 heading into the ACCCG.

If nothing else, USC is already done with their regular season, so it'd be easy to jump them.

We would most likely be #20 if we win this weekend. Move ahead of Iowa State and USC, OK State will most likely lose to OU and the loser of Memphis-Cincy would drop below us as well

Easily could be 21st. Doesn't matter, keep going 1-0.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

Numbers dont matter - beat UVA!

Danny is always open

This

Do y'all think we deserve it? The metrics still aren't crazy about us.

Sagarin Ratings - 35th
Massey Ratings - 36th
SP+ - 42nd
Football Power Index - 46th

Yes. All the metrics are taking 11 games into account. I think we are a top 25 team right now and that's what rankings should be.

Two FCS teams dont help in metrics either.

I mean we play PSU next year I really don't think we should match up against them in a bowl this year.

Also how the hell we ranked right around Iowa State

Because those loses to Duke and BC look REALLY ugly. And they are. But oh well, I'm just glad to be ranked again.

I can't imagine the Orange Bowl gives a flip about a matchup that would occur after the game in question

I just can't see Georgia falling below Penn St in the CFP poll if they lose to LSU. The only scenario I can see where the OB takes Penn St is if UGA beats LSU and both are in the playoff. Then Bama goes to the Sugar and Penn St is the next best option they have.

Of course, if Bama loses to Auburn, Bama could also be in play for the Orange if Georgia goes to the Sugar.

Or, if Ohio state or Clemson loses, and Georgia beats lsu, Alabama, lsu and Georgia can be in the playoffs!

We should honestly be a little higher

You are far more confident in this team than I am. Not gonna lie, this game kind of reminds me of our second 2011 loss to Clemson; I'm definitely nervous about it.

2019 UVA is nowhere near 2011 Clemson

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

Not in talent level or team make up, but in terms of narrative. They were the early favorite then VT improved and became the sexy pick. Then we lost.,

Major difference there being that Clemson had just beaten is earlier that season.

UVA hasn't beaten is since 2003.

I don't see it.

We're probably about right, and need to win convincingly on Friday.

I get where we are ranked but kinda feel like we'd have a shot against anyone other than LSU, OSU, Clemson, and Bama, while putting Oklahoma, Michigan, Georgia, and Utah in the next tier. I'd feel solid about our chances against any team 16-25 at this point.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Mmmmmmaybe pump the brakes a little.... Yes, we're fresh off two straight shutouts over P5 teams, but SP+ says their offenses are ranked #110 and #118 in the nation. We're leaps and bounds better than we were 2 months ago, but still shouldn't be favored to beat most teams in that range.

Well Notre Dame is ranked #16 and we lost to them by 1 point in South Bend while playing our backup QB. I think nearly everyone would agree our offense is better with Hooker at the moment so I don't believe it's illogical to suggest we are playing solidly in the 16-25 range. As for the other teams, I'm mostly getting at the idea that I'm not sold on Minnesota, Baylor, Penn State and Wisconsin.
