Good article that gives some more detail on Bud's health scare last year. Didn't realize it was as scary as it apparently was.
I'll miss him, maybe even more than Frank. I met him when I was a very young and scared CT reporter and he gave me an hour in his office for a story I was doing. One of the coolest experiences of my then young life.

Bud is my favorite figure in my 30 year relationship with Virginia Tech football. But everything seems to say that him stepping away now is the right move for him. I wish him well, and I wish for the next DC to carry on the tradition of the LPD.

That does confirm a rumor I heard from a coworker that Bud's health was in bad shape, but I had no idea. Sometime things like that put life into perspective, and I hope Bud gets to enjoy retirement after this season. Whoever replaces Bud has big shoes to fill.

The article left out the part right after that when Coach Bud got up and went to the L&D Department and delivered 15 babies simultaneously, then did a heart transplant just using a clipboard and plastic six pack ring.

It's sooooooooooo boring. So much time waiting for stuff to potentially happen. Getting sterile and then waiting and nothing happening. Odd interactions with breast feeding mom's because I'm a guy. I also very much dislike dealing with other people's children/babies. I was good at it, just don't like it.
It's probably tied with pediatrics on my list of least favorite departments to work.

I've delivered two babies (none of my own) in the back of the medic and I can't tell what's worse L&D or Peds. At least with L&D the patient can talk to you and tell you what is going on. Meanwhile peds they won't tell you anything and none of the equipment fits right.
The thing that got me while my kid was being born was the smells. Had to hold back vomiting a few times. Plus the buckets and buckets of blood and fluids. 🤮
Also, after doing my research, I ended up being the best breast feeding coach my wife had.
I wish for him to enjoy his well-deserved retirement. Would I love for him to come back? Hell, yes, but I want more for him to enjoy the rest of his life doing whatever the hell he wants to when he wants to. I'm certain that he will not be able to watch a Tech game sitting down though......I bet he'll watch the key plays in that classic sideline crouch...with hands on both knees.

I used to work in an emergency department, ventricular tachycardia (known as V-tach or ironically VT) is a common "serious" illness that is sometimes treated with cardioversion (aka shocking a patient with a defibrillator). V-tach is when the lower chambers of the heart beat significantly faster normal. A normal standing HR should be between 60-100 bps while a person in v-tach is typically between 180-210 bps. Based on the article, I'm assuming v-tach is what happened to Bud.
V-tach is life threatening if left untreated but is "easily" treatable by any emergency room in the country.
It was Afib w/RVR
Ah I missed that in the article. I'll defer to Jmock2011 (who's a doctor) but Afib w/ RVR is also a common "emergent" issue but there are people who live with afib w/ RVR as a baseline condition.

VT is going to have to earn that one. Do it for Bud. Do it to get to the ACC Championship game. Do it to beat the Hoos.

As much as I am a fan of VT football, there are things that are more important, like family and health. VT might struggle on defense in the future, but Bud deserves to have a life after football and to enjoy his time with his family.
The second poster is an old The Far Side cartoon and is probably a better illustration of perspective. It is a drawing of a flock of buzzards on a dead rhino. One buzzard is talking to another saying, "Just think here we are, the afternoon sun beating down on us, a dead bloated rhino underfoot and friends flying in from all over. I tell you Frank these are the best of times."
Buzzards, the hot African sun, and a bloated rotting rhino - none of those fit in my wheelhouse of enjoyable images, but for buzzards might find that heavenly. Perspective!

Ok so is it a little strange that Ross Dellenger gets the exclusive Bud Foster inside true story on his retirement? After his article this past summer on the "I hope we lose" transfer crowd that seemed so well timed to tell the right story. Maybe it's just another wild conspiracy theory.
No it isn't. Came out that there was an article to write about division in the locker room while he was researching and interviewing another story - could have been this one. Bud announced his intentions to retire two weeks prior to the other story

Bud sticking around all those year showed his love for Beamer, but Bud sticking around to the Fuente transition showed his love for Virginia Tech. Imagine he could have taken a job for a number of national powers that would have given him a better final chance at a NC. Really happy for him.
So the Pitt game almost killed Bud last year. My hatred for Pitt somehow deepens.
And the shutout this year just became that much more enjoyable.

I have a few questions that don't have a bearing on the overall story and I'm a little confused.
It started off by wondering if the Miami game, which was the next one, was the one where Bud started calling the games from the booth. Would seem to make sense in the timing and from a health standpoint. Hell, it's amazing to me that he was even at the game, much less finishing out the season.
After seeing the Pitt game was played in P'burgh, it occured to me that SI said it was "mere hours" after the loss. I guess he could have flown home with the team, and after arriving, gone to the hospital. I guess the "mere hours" term confused me. It doesn't matter, of course. Just the way my mind works (or doesn't work) sometimes.
Hats off to the staff that treated him. Amazing to me that this story was kept quiet for over a year. I'd heard rumors about health issues, like everyone else, but nothing like this.
There will never be another Bud Foster. GOAT! Needs to be in the HOF.
