Flying photography looks epic. My Navy jet jock Dad (flew just about everything over 30 years - Navy and Air Force) and 2 brothers (one an F-18 pilot and the other an F-14 RIO) will enjoy that.
How did they enjoy the first one? I always find it interesting watching or hearing about pilots watching movies like that..
One of my brothers is a former Naval Flight Officer that knew several guys that were actual flyers in original Top Gun movie, including some that were also in the background singing in Maverick & Goose's bar singing scene. He said it is a typical Hollywoodized movie with unrealistic plot (e.g., Maverick and Iceman getting immediate orders to depart after graduation ceremony to face the Russian threat was silly as if they were the only pilots in the Navy). But the main thing I recall that he said was that Maverick would have been immediately kicked out of the Navy on his first flyby/buzzing the tower...not lectured. He never would have flown again for the Navy after that stunt. And he pointed out that we would never need to get that close to enemy aircraft as portrayed in movie. He also noted that the dangers of the job, somewhat glossed over, but also demonstrated in Goose's death, are quite real, as he lost lots of friends in flying accidents, including his best friend.

Agree with Holmes here. They thought the plot was cheesy and a lot of the flying was not necessary as shown due to available weapons systems at the time. But pilots are pilots, so the flying is always cool.
The dangers of the job, yeah. My brother (F-14 RIO) was flying at 30k ft out over the ACMR (Air Combat Maneuvering Range) out off Hatteras when the cockpit glass came of the F-14. That structure is 12 ft long a weighs well over a 1000 #. He and the pilot were lucky it didn't rip their head off when it left the plane. They luckily had their oxygen masks on and the pilot took the plane down to the deck and flew back at barely 100 knots all the way back to Oceana. A cold, brutal, long flight.
My brother left the Navy the nexy year.

The F-18 could never actually pull off the Cobra Maneuver at that altitude. It would either rise much higher or stall out...

Edit: I watched a couple of vids on the movie; an extended trailer and a review of the flying by a navy pilot.
From what I see, the only addition to the original plot are the P 51 scenes. Hot chick, pilot dies, competitive sports, motor cycle, etc.
Pilot says that most of the flying would not even be aloud to happen. Much PC work. I still go see it though!
