Felt like a star wars movie. I enjoyed it because it was fun and visually stunning. Very glad it didn't tie in with The Mandalorian at all.

I can't help but watch these movies through my hypercritical Star Wars fan lens.
I get a little peeved with the liberties that are taken with things like "How long does hyperspace actually take?". Well, it takes as long as is convenient for the plot.
And "The bad guys have essentially unlimited resources" in this movie and the sequel trilogy in general bugged me as well. JJ made sure they paid lip service to the First Order being short on resources after Star Killer base being built and destroyed, but I'm supposed to just accept that Palpatine has the manpower to build and crew the largest fleet in the galaxy, and every ship can kill planets now?
As I said in the other thread though, overall I liked it. Once I got over my initial frustration with these (and other) points everything else about it was at least fun and entertaining.
Made it all the way through without shedding a tear until Lando gave chewie the medal at the end then I finally gave in that shit hit me right in the feels. Almost screamed when I thought Rey had killed chewie.
Chewie getting a medal and Ben doing the Han no look blaster shot kill were my two favorite shameless fan service bits.
Hard to narrow down favorite shameless fan service bits when they take up 30 mins of the movie.
I'll give Abrams props for giving Chewie a medal. I was the only one in the theater that noticed the allusion there.
Guy in the theater asked how killing the sith and leaving a single Jedi brought balance to the force and I found myself wondering the same thing too -- is it because rey is entirely palpatine but also entirely skywalker?
I think she still doesnt even know what she is hence burying the sabers at the end. I'm not as nuts with the lore so I'm not too sure on what the orange saber at the end would entail.
The same way that Vader killing Palpatine and leaving Luke alone brought balance before it got retconned. Love and kindness, etc.

I haven't watched the film yet, but she has basically become a "Grey" Jedi.

That is what I'm running with but I never read into if saber color had anything to do with being a grey jedi. That was my theory till my buddy said he didnt think they could have a colored saber being grey. Then again orange/yellow is a mix of red and green so maybe thats how we know shes grey.
To be honest, other than the red lasersword being obviously Sith, I don't think the color of the saber means much. Luke's original lightsaber, which belonged to his father, was blue, and when he lost it after Vader sliced his hand, he constructed a brand new lightsaber that glowed green.
Some theories have suggested the crystal that powers the lightsaber is attuned to one's Force personality, and the stronger the darkness in the person, the more the crystal "bleeds" until it turn red. To me, I simply think that is more cosmetic than anything.

So, there you have it - Rey became a Grey Jedi and she will be responsible for creating a complete different Jedi Order, one that is not so strict to adhering to only the Light side, shunning any trace of emotions, or the Sith that creates the Rule of Two and embraces every emotions. She represents the balance.
I recall a moment where she was able to summon the lightsaber on her own, with no formal training whatsoever, when she confronted Kylo after he killed Han. She was righteously pissed off and was able to kick Kylo's ass. Yet, she maintained a controlled level of aggression and channeled the aggression to defend and attack Kylo.
Vader, on the other hand, simply obliterate his enemy because he is fucking powerful, rivaling only the Emperor himself. Luke became ridiculously powerful when Vader pushed the wrong button and was motivated by the love of his twin sister and righteously pissed off that his own father would try to turn her the dark side.
I think the overarching theme of Star Wars is that love is a powerful force that can be manipulated for right and wrong reasons. It's a knife edge that we, as humans, walk.
That's my philosophical bit for the day.

The yellow kyber crystals are generally only used by jedi temple guards that are specially chosen jedi's. I'm not sure why Rey had a yellow saber at the end either. Maybe it played into how she doesn't really have the typical parental and jedi upbringing. Then again JJ could have just given her one for a few minutes because it was cool looking.

Just watched the movie. It was better than I expected, especially after reading these message boards. The music is always top notch, the action scenes may have been the best of all nine (yes, all nine), the cinematography was nothing less than stunning, and the acting was pretty good overall. Again, much better than expected.
Now, for the engineers out there worried about all the physics laws being broken, etc. I get it - it takes a lot of artistic liberties - but so did the early movies. Bottom line is that if a piece of art can truly get some emotion out of you, it's doing its job - D. Ridley has a hell of a presence and so does Driver. It was moving. Just my 2 cents.
That's what makes sci-fi so fun. The laws of physics and the logic behind it gets discarded for the fun of it.
Excellent. It was excellent. I'm going to sleep on it and probably see it at least once more in theaters (Regal Unlimited is worth it for me, no doubt). But that hit all the right spots for me, initially.
The reveal of Rey's family was unexpected and quite frankly the best thing they could have done to tie it back to the Skywalker saga. It felt empty in TLJ to say she was no one special.
Overall I thought it was a good movie, although it certainly had its moments that left me less than thrilled.
Growing up a Star Wars kid, my emotions will always be tied to Han, Luke, Leia, Chewie, and all.
I never really felt a connection to Kylo, Rey, Poe, Finn, or any other new character, so the best moments of the trilogy for me revolve around the characters I grew up with.
and what the hell was Finn going to tell Rey? He loved her? He has force powers? Pie is better than cake? The world needs to know!
Rey finally won me over in this one. She's pretty damn solid and she had the "it" factor for this film.

I think the whole point was to develop a whole new generation of characters for the younger generation to become attached to (i.e. make the new series the Star Wars trilogy that Gen Z can claim as their own). But I agree with you on how disappointing it is to see a diminished or poorly-crafted roles for Han, Luke, Leia, Lando, etc. I grew up in the prequel "generation" of Star Wars and a part from Obi-won Kenobi (who is my favorite Star Wars character), I just couldn't become attached to the prequel characters like the originals.

Overall, I give I liked it. Some really, really good scenes and some cheese. But I suppose that was how the original went too. MUCH, MUCH better than the last movie.
Before I forget. One thing that really had me shaking my head. Before I went I tried to stay away from any kind of info on the movie, but one piece got to me. And that was JJ saying that his one regret in his previous film was Chewy not hugging Leia after Han's death. So after everyone returns to their jungle hide-out and there's celebrations Finn and Po are looking for Rey everywhere. Finally they found her and the three share a celebratory embrace right next to.... fucking Chewy. Who looks right... at... them and then just raises his arm. It's not that big a deal but if that's his one regret from the first movie boy did JJ screw that up.
Interesting to read above that Lando gave Chewy the medal. I just watched it and in my version (apparently) Maz Kanata gives Chewy the medal. No idea why that would change. I like Lando giving it to him more though.
General dislikes:
1) horses on the Destroyer... boring and meaningless plot device
2) General Hux being the spy and being so easily killed off
3) Speaking of which, where did all these General's come from in the first place? Hux seemed like he was THE guy running the show for Snoke. All the sudden there's a guy above him now. Did Kylo put them in place?
4) The sand worm healing. Ok, I get it. Needed to show the whole healing hands life force plot. But that could have been done in so many ways. I like the sand pit idea, but would have been cool to see Rey use her force powers to lift everyone out of the sinking sand AND then find that she also lifted the remains of the Jedi Hunter. which obviously she could considering...
5) she played tug of war with a transport shuttle that like the sand worm seemed overly unnecessary to reveal a plot point, in this case that she has palpatine lighting coursing through her. Don't get me wrong, I liked the concept of her being powerful enough to grab the transport just thought the tug of war was cheese.
6) The new destroyers all having planet killer weapons and for some reason in the mother of all traffic jams. Except that one obviously got out easily enough and destroyed a freaking planet. Which by the way, where is that ship now? did it go back to the fight at the Sith world or is it still out there merrily blowing planets up?
7) Where exactly did all those destroyers come from anyway? Like mentioned above somehow Palpatine amassed hundreds of destroyers, with even newer planet killer weapon technology and what must be hundreds of thousands of crew members.
8) Who the phuck were all those Sith sycophants in the Arena and how did none of them survive? Again probably at least a hundred thousand in there chanting and not one of them survived.
9) Unnecessary characters. Zorii Bliss. I don't know.... liked the history with Po but just was such a small insignificant character. Totally unnecessary to me. Jannah also was pretty much a useless character. Nothing against the actress but utterly unnecessary to the movie other than to tell Finn that there were others that left the First Order.
10) Luke's ghost catching the lightsaber and raising the x-wing. Look I know he's uber powerful (despite going out like a chump in the last movie.) but if his ghost still has all these powers just go along and help Rey fight.
11) Finn's declaration to Rey not revealed. Did I miss it? Or is it just left unsaid?
probably some more. All I got at moment. But again, generally I liked it.
Things I liked:
1) Great action sequences. Score again fantastic. Cinematography excellent.
2) Rey and Ben/Kylo romance. Got to say this was one of my biggest complaints in the last movie but JJ managed to turn it around into a great ending. And the payoff of all the cross galactic face time calls was when she gave him the light saber to fight the knights of Ren. (which, come to think of it, is another gripe. weren't these dudes all students of Luke? why don't they have lightsabers too?) Then the final act of Ben to save Rey. Really enjoyed that.
3) Leia's sacrifice to save Ben. Great way to let her go in my opinion. As well as, Ben's sacrifice to Rey.
4) No unnecessary locations. Looking at you Casino planet that happened for no f-ing reason.
5) Rey as a Grey Jedi. Grey is the only way. Ahsoka Tano blazed that trail and fitting for Rey "nobody knows the real me" to take that path. But .... white lightsaber JJ, white. Missed opportunity there.
6) Rey returning to Luke's childhood home and burying their sabers, was great. Her taking the Skywalker name was great. Some random walking up out of the desert asking her name... dumb.
8) 3PO. The "looking at my friends the last time" in the trailer had me worried about uber cheese... but actually thought 3PO was quite good in this movie.
9) Although I question the ease of killing off hundreds of thousands Sith followers with such ease that scene was fantastic. The chanting. Palpatine. The darkness. The lighting. Wow... absolutely nailed what I would think the Sith HQ would look like.
again, more that I liked. Just what's fresh at the moment.
Lots of missed opportunities I thought, but generally enjoyable. I'm glad the Skywalker saga is closed though. That could be the biggest thing holding Star Wars back. The Mandalorian is great. Rogue One was fantastic. Just need to escape the core characters and storyline. But i'm interested in who the big bad is for future Star Wars movies/stories.

It was Maz when I saw the movie on Thursday. Lando is there but he talks to his "daughter" instead.
Almost 100% certain it was Lando in the movie I saw. Maz was in the same vicinity or very next scene but it was clearly Lando holding and offering the medal to chewie
Maz picked up the medal when Leia Force ghosted. She was the one that handed it to Chewie

With regards to Hux, I like the idea in general. There's hints at friction between him and Kylo in both the previous movies to where I could buy him getting frustrated with Kylo's leadership and helping out the Resistance just to spite Kylo. Like one of those "Oh you wanted it your silly Sith way? Fine. Fuck you guys. Now we all lose". But they don't really do enough in Rise to pull it off. It's more plot device. They needed someone to turn to help them escape and he's the character there. It needed some scenes and dialogue before the turn and/or after to really sell that plot effectively.
As for all the ships, I try not to think about it too much. The more you think about it, the dumber it gets. Like seriously, no one in the First Order prior to this movie had any idea about all the resources going to build and support this fleet? And if you've got death star lasers on every ship, why waste time literally converting a planet in the Starkiller Base? It's one of those deals where the sequel trilogy needed a Kevin Feige type (guy that overseas Marvel Movies) making sure the overall plot and details track.
Agree on Hux. Concept was fine, execution was poor. Also I didn't like that he was a sniveling brat. As you said, a conniving character looking to take Kylo down at all costs would have been better.
On the ships, yep I can accept silly. As I said overall I liked it. I'm nitpicking mostly. But I think you're mistaken on the First Order knowing anything about Palpatine and his armada. Snoke surely knew and maybe a few people but Kylo obviously didn't. Hux likely didn't either. So Palpatine seemed to have built all that, recruited all that in secrecy. In the reverse of what you are saying though, if Palatine is the one pulling Snoke's strings then why fid Palpatine waste time on the Star Killer base. I guess it was just a giant misdirection to keep the resistance focused on the wrong target.
Based on a couple of scenes in Fallen Order it seems very possible that starkiller base was being constructed by the empire. So the first order may have simply picked up the project and completed it.

Honestly, Kevin Feige-type would exhaust me because I am already having the Marvel Universe fatigue from all those movies being pumped out by Marvel Studio.
What I think Disney and Lucasfilm need to do after Rise of Skywalker is to produce stand-alone film that somehow ties into the current universe. Disney and Lucas film have plenty of materials to draw from - comics to novels and perhaps unfinished scripts laying around in the vault - and there is no shortage of where they could go with Star Wars. I suspect they are going to focus more on the Disney+ streaming to create more story that cannot be put on the big screen because a good story need time to build to climatic finish.
Now hold the phone - I've watched every Mandalorian episode and to say it is "great" is a stretch - really. Finding baby yoda (episode 1?) and the most recent episode were indeed great - the others? Not so much. that dumpster fire episode of him hanging out defending those farmers with the girl warrior was lame. And the thread of the show has been way lacking. It has had it's moments, but it's going to need more juice to keep going. sorry, had to chime in on that.
Hard disagree. The Mandalorian is essentially Kungfu in space with a better central plot, which is all kinds awesome. Also it's a tv show. Bound to be a few shit episodes in any great series. Final season of GOT for example.
I know this is an old post and you may know by now but, Jannah was originally tagged to be revealed as Lando's daughter. The people on Exogol were sith but, not force powerful if that makes sense. Palpatine is not the most powerful sith ever. I really hope we can have some dark spin offs. We get all the good guy spinoffs.
Good post. The best way to think of Sith is that they are a culture, not a specific race (as Rise makes clear with the alien Sith hunter who's ship they find on Passana). They don't need to be able to use the Force to be Sith, I like how you can only be a Jedi if you can use the Force.
Just like the Mandalorians are a culture made of beings from everywhere (they seem to have no problem considering baby Yoda as a foundling).
In KOTOR, you go to the Sith home world of Korriban and it's a really neat part of the story, but drives home the point who the Sith actually are
That was fucking amazing, critics are stupid! First movie made almost on par with the original trilogy!
A bit more context, I have been a fan since I saw Jedi in the theaters as a 3 year old 37 years ago and this is the first one that gave me the nostalgia and magic and wonderment I felt long ago. Plus my 9 and 6 year old loved it and seeing it through their eyes probably helped
I really think you have a point. It had feel. Of the latest 6 I like Revenge of this Sith and The Rise of Skywalker the best. It's hard for me to compare to the first three because they were woven into my youth, but on first response it holds up.
I can see the critics asking Fernly-esque questions causing the downgrade reviews, but to most viewers the JJ got his points across.

I had a massive dislike for Snoke and how stupid and random the character was...but the fact that he was totally random because Palpatine was just growing them in vats to be puppets, that was some serious villain shit. I liked it a lot. Very dark for Star Wars as well if you think about it.
You have to accept a bit of ridiculousness in Star Wars... so the mounted horse charge and shooting the TIE fighter down with the crossbow were obnoxious but that's just how it goes.
The mounted horse crap looked a lot like one of my childhood favorite cartoons - HeMan with Ooklah the Mok riding their horses.
Yea - that was some lame ass shit - but it really didn't last long, so I was ok with it.
I was watching A New Hope then other day with the kids, getting them ready to go see a show at 4:15 in Tempe this afternoon.
And I realized. ANH is cheesy as hell. I love it dearly, and it's an all timer, but when you really think about it it's a ridiculous B movie (that's even what the British crew working on it thought) that happened to strike all the right notes.
So I am ready to accept any and all cheese for this final film

Agree with this sentiment. Calling A New Hope a B movie is lazy and misinformed. Especially in the context that it is 1977! It also has some of the best acting in the whole series.
So, I just finished watching "A New Hope" via TNT app and came away with a goofy grin on my face. It's something of a guilty pleasure because it's something I watched growing up - from the Original to the Special Effects release - and I came to realize some things.
It is obvious that Star Wars was space opera loosely based on World War II. From the Galactic Empire's officers bearing uniforms that have striking resemblance to the Nazi officers, including elite armed force called Stormtroopers, and a rebellion that closely mirrors the British officers and French underground resistance fighters.
Luke Skywalker was a son of Anakin Skywalker who later learned that Darth Vader is his father and that Anakin Skywalker is Darth Vader, a mind-fuck job that took Luke two episodes to come to term. As Obi-Wan explained, from a certain point-of-view, Anakin Skywalker ceased to exist and became Darth Vader with his body heavily mechanized to support the fragile flesh of Anakin Skywalker. However, as Luke explained to Kenobi, he sensed an inner conflict and hoped to exploit that conflict to turn him back.
The weird love triangle between Luke, Han, and Princess Leia can only be explained by understanding George Lucas' bungling the Star Wars saga until the popularity of Star Wars took off. Once he decided to commit to having Luke and Leia as twins, then through some retconning, it helps to understand how Leia was able to "hear" Luke while he was hanging on for dear life at Bespin, the cloud city, including the mystical link that only twins somehow share. In the middle act, after they escaped from the Death Star, Han goaded Luke into revealing his feeling toward Leia, and through retconning, it is obvious that Luke felt very protective toward Leia, but it doesn't explain how Leia had no problem doing the tongue dance with Luke at Hoth after Han rescued Luke from certain frozen fate, unless she did this knowing that it would just rankle Han. Got to admit that there are some weird incest thing going until the forest moon of Endor when Luke finally revealed to Leia that she was his long-lost twin sister and a Force-sensitive individual.
In a lot of way, Luke takes after his father, Anakin, strong-willed, stubborn, passionate, and easily jaded while Leia takes after her mother, calculating, free-spirit, outspoken, strong-willed, and royalty to boot.
In some way, I can see why Luke always felt like a failure, orphaned yet under the watchful eyes of Kenobi from a distance, a callous uncle who is afraid that Luke would end up like his father. Then when Luke failed to raise his X-wing from the swamp and Yoda could summon it out of swamp with relative ease, it compounds his deep sense of insecurity and cynicism, that led to his distant, brooding, and cynical character in "The Last Jedi." Luke refused to train Rey, and it was only because of Rey's stubbornness, which apparently is a family trait, that Luke gave in and trained her - half-heartedly at that. It took the Force Ghost of Yoda to knock some sense into Luke and the most important lesson Luke failed to learn, that failure is the best teacher. Kind of what Bud Foster meant when he said experience is the best teacher, I digress.
I think that I need to walk back some of my criticism toward Disney and the Star Wars' screenwriters. I do think they borrowed some concept developed by Timothy Zahn in his trilogy since it explains why Luke was a bitter man, disillusioned with the dogma Jedi Order.
So, we now see that Rey took the lessons from the failure of the Jedi Order and rejected the Sith's concept of supremacy, and sought a third option, that is to be balanced between Light and Darkness. In reading some of the spoilers, I can't help but feel that J.J. Abrams and his team of screenwriters also borrowed some concepts from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Let me explain:
The Avatar is a descendant in long, unbroken line of Avatars who combines all the knowledge and wisdom of past Avatars that is reincarnated in each elements until Katara broke the cycle when she cut off ties to Aang. It sounded like Rey, drawing on the mights of past Jedi through the Force, was able to destroyed the Emperor, turning his darkness against himself, and that is a striking parallel to Avatar Aang. Whenever Avatar Aang "gets his glow on," that is all the power of past Avatars being summoned and channeled through him to restore whatever balance that got lost.
I am now looking forward to watching Rey complete the journey and help reshape Star Wars universe with a completely different Jedi Order that is focused on balance.

Once again, Disney completely made a blunder, and so did Screenrant.com. If they had not listened to what is considered as canonical by Disney, they already had the answer. They need to reread Timothy Zahn's novels, especially Heir To The Empire because at one point, Grand Admiral Thrawn visited a planet that found a lot of buried cloning facilities, and stumbled across a deranged Jedi master who tried repeatedly to have the Organa-Solo twins kidnapped so he could train them his way. This is also where the facility cloned Luke from the severed hand recovered from Bespin.
I am incredulous at the short memory these critics had. It was Timothy Zahn and his trilogy that reopened the Star Wars universe and kicked start the influx of Star Wars novels.
I gotta say, bringing up Aang and Katara is not doing a lot to dispel the whole "they took something that was really well done and then crapified it with a sequel series" critical reaction. I can't think of avatar any more without it being tainted by how crappy legend of Korra was as a followup.

My daughter and I have watched Avatar: The Last Airbender five or six times, and she even bought a DVD set so we could watch it some more together. We tried to watch The Legend of Korra and nope. It just wasn't well done at all. The only exception to that is the episode where they revealed the first avatar and how that came about. I think it was too close to Aang's timeline. If they had done it about 100 years after Aang's death, and the Air Nomads already rebuilt, then that would have made sense.
I think the incorporation of steampunk technology was cool, but the stories told in Korra's timeline just didn't have the same chemistry, development, and overall theme as Aang's timeline.
Man, by the time I saw Star Wars for the first time (mid 90's? I was 5-7 maybe?), Darth Vader being Luke's father was already such cultural minutia that I didn't even realize that it was supposed to be a huge plot twist until I was in my 20's.
It was such a stunning plot twist that half the conversations among us SW geeks from 80 to 83 were all about whether Vader was lying or telling the truth.
It was a stunning plot twist, and in those pre-internet days, we had no way to fact check it. It spawned a huge argument among us kids in the neighborhood (I was 9 in 1980 when it came out) which was not resolved until RotJ came out in 1983. I was totally committed to the No Way, Vader Is Not His Father side, and let me tell you, that crow was not very tasty.
Also remember, these movies weren't on demand, and they weren't replayed endlessly. All we had to go by for our neighborhood arguments was what we remember from the last time we saw it in the theater. It was a recurring argument that lasted three years.

After seeing it tonight with the family, I've gotta say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Easily my favorite of the new trilogy.
I thought Palpatine was fantastic. The darkness and atmosphere for that final sequence, the Sith chanting, all of it was just great stuff.
The chemistry between Daisy and Adam Driver has been good in all 3 movies, and this one clearly was the top. Loved the scene where she hands him the lightsaber. Driver is a good actor, and I bought the conclusion of his arc.
I was glad to see that JJ and the writers took some ideas from the books and graphic novels and incorporated them slightly. In particular, the Dark Empire graphic novels (which are awesome even if not canon now). That series explains how Palpatine comes back and is able to assemble a massive new fleet (the Ecplise Star Destroyer has a Death Star laser equipped, for example) and crew so many Star Destroyers. Since they don't explain it in the movies, I just kinda filled in the blanks with that extended universe info and it didn't really bother me the logistics of it.

They were done by Dark Horse Comics, so really high end illustration and a considerably darker storyline than the movies
This is the sequel trilogy movie I've been waiting for since Disney first announced that they were going to make these. It pulled a lot of insperation from the ledgends cannon. It gave resolution to some fan grevences old and new. And it actually tied everything back to the Skywalker saga.
I just wish JJ had been able to direct The Last Jedi, I think this trilogy could have rivaled the original end to end if EP 8 hadn't tried so hard to undo what EP 7 set-up.
Absolutely loved it. It wasn't exactly what I wanted but honestly, it was probably much better that way. I love the fact that after all of these movies that focus on family and lineage, at the very end Rey chose the name Skywalker.
Other things that I loved:
-How damn good it was watching Rey, Finn and Poe work together as a team. In the first two movies they were mostly either completely separated or working with one of the other and not both.
-Was really leery about reusing Papatine as the antagonist but honestly it turned into one of my favorite parts of the saga.
-General Hux. Makes perfect sense that, after all the shit he got put through because of Kylo's actions, that he would be a spy with a very simple motive. Also, it made perfect sense that Allegiant General "I swear I'm not Christopher Walken" Pryde saw right through his bullshit.
-Someone give Chewbacca an award for Best Supporting Actor. When he got the news that Leia died and just fell to the ground howling, well, let's just say that there were a lot of people getting leaky around the eyes.
Also, The 501st Legion was out in full force at our theater. It was truly amazing to watch them work and it reminded me of why i love Star Wars. For better or for worse, it's hard for me to look at the Star Wars movies as just movies. Movies are great and all, but Star Wars is an event. And having a theater full of professional Star Wars cosplayers just hanging out and taking pictures all day really adds to what makes Star Wars really special.
am I the only one that was just... whelmed by this? the entire third act was just a rehash of Return of the Jedi. If I wanted that, I have that on laser disc...

I thought it was a lot of fun to watch. Visually pleasing. Good sound. Great action. It tied in with the old ones a lot but I was cool with it.
I thought it did a good job of resolving the arc. I mean, how else would it have ended? People always get upset with finales (see Seinfeld, GOT, The Sopranos)
Also, I don't believe for a second that Disney is done. Lots of loose ends. Lots of spin-off opportunity. This isn't over.
Disney didn't pay the GDP of a developing country for a property just to sit on it after 5 movies, a cartoon, and a TV series.
I'll never get my dark gritty Knights of the Old Republic trilogy though, and I need to come to grips with that.
I don't have a reference, but I believe I read somewhere that Disney announced early on that the Skywalker family story would be done after episode 9.
But they fully intended to go heavy in the rest of the Star Wars universe, outside of the Skywalker saga. Which they've already started with Rogue One and Solo, and will continue to do so long as they're making money.
I mean, it makes sense, as all the blood Skywalkers are dead (pending any gotchas).
This movie took another turn I wasn't expecting: Lord of the Rings! I seriously cocked my head to the side when they found a legendary dagger, with inscriptions on it, written in a dark language. Oh and then they rode mounted beasts into battle.

If I'm being objective (not likely), I would say that the most recent three are a lot closer to the original trilogy than I'd like to admit. I always wanted to write off the prequels as crap that didn't belong with the original. The sandcastle that is my rose-colored glasses for the series has been eroded by wave after wave of bad installments. With the perspective of all 9 movies in the saga, I'd say the prequels aren't nearly as bad as I wanted them to be (relative to the rest).
It's almost worse that Rogue one was so good because it means that the universe could have much better content on the big screen. Here's to hoping killing off the skywalker saga is what it takes for Disney to bring the series up to the quality it deserves.
Most movies are bad
Saw it this afternoon and I really enjoyed this one. For comparison, I was not a huge fan of the last two or the prequels. Solo was kind of meh and I also really enjoyed Rouge One.
There were only a few things that really bugged me.
For the second one, it really isn't out of character for how Star Wars movies have been done in the past, but in an era where we have multi-movie stories and season long plots in everything, I wish there had been some kind of foreshadowing to the puppet master plot back in the other movies.
It gave the feeling that there was no planning ahead whatsoever for these movies and they just kind of made it up as they went along.
All that said, I enjoyed it. Lets wait a decade before we make any more though.

Apparently Rise of Skywaker has made Darth Revan canon. In a newly released book of official Rise art, it reveals that the legions of Sith Troopers that were part of Palpatine Final Order are named after Sith Lords. The 3rd Legion is referred to as the Revan Legion.

Just saw it. I think the critic rating is fair. It honestly didn't feel any different than TLJ to me. I liked it more than TLJ though. But in a vacuum it was an average movie.
I watched tlj last night a week after watching rise of sky walker and the main thing that struck me as different was that in tlj it really felt like they were pushing the marvel type of "humor" at every opportunity which really bothered me. Yoda, Luke and the gang hamming it up for two hours plus. While there was some of that in skywalker, overall it felt like it had more gravitas - a little more heart and a little less cheese in general. That's why it felt better to me.
I had a fantastic time seeing ep 9. I highly recommend it for fans. Very satisfying movie

What Finn was going to tell Rey
JJ confirmed it to some fans that asked at whatever conference this person was at. Makes sense considering they had teased a bit with Finn being able to "sense" Rey in prior movies and definitely made a point of it in Rise (he sensed Kylo as well).
Still, it's sort of stupid that they never paid it off in the movie despite it being referenced 3 or 4 times. I saw some discussion based on the novelization of the movie and some comments from JJ in the past where fans speculated the plan for the trilogy was both Finn and Rey were intended to be the "heirs" of the Force. That they'd be the Jedi to take over for Luke (and Leia to a degree) but it never really played out in the movies (my god they needed someone over the directors to steer the overall plot). Bummer. But hey, at least there's a potential idea for a new set of movies 4 or 5 years from now. Cuz you know they ain't stopping this money train
I mean I would think it's pretty heavy allusion to the next movie(s) following Finn. Im probably dead wrong, but why else leave it like that?

I really enjoyed TRoS but i agree with this critique. I would have rather seen JJ or even Rian do all three even though I didn't love TLJ for the sake of cohesion.

What am I missing. It was a great big "MEH" for me and all of my family. They could have ended the entire series with the last one.
Don't get me wrong, the special effects, etc were outstanding. Why in the F is Leia in the movie? When did she give a s*** about becoming a Jedi? Why is it that Obi Wan, after dying could come back an communicate, but now we have Luke affecting the physical world? How the hell does Han do the Jedi master post death manifestation to communicate after showing zero ability with the force, before dying? How does Kylo Ren change to being a good guy after being a hateful bitch since his introduction (at least Luke played on his father's emotion). Why would Rey save his ass after striking a death blow? How does Palpatin come back to life and have powers after he was clearly killed?
WAY too many questions and inconsistencies to say this was a good movie, beyond the special effects.

Why does Darth Vader side with Jedi's when he was a Sith?
I'm not sure that I'm looking too deep. When I watch a movie, I want a story line that makes sense and character's motivations that are consistent with the story (they may change, but I want to know why).
I get the desire to include Leia, Luke and Han in the movie, but two characters have died and the 3rd has additional back story that doesn't make sense.
Han appearing broke no rules for me. He was simply the appearance on screen of the thoughts of Kylo. Nice way to flesh out kylos thoughts/inner turmoil.
Yeah that didnt bother me at all I dont think it was a force relative moment it was just kylos inner turmoil with a little visualisation of what was going on in his head instead of him alone talking to himself it helped tie it together
You don't have to think at all, it was said in the movie, Han said he was just Kylo's memory. It had nothing to do with the force.

I had a ton of similar questions too but opted not to post them but since you did I'll dive in as well.
1) Finn's love interests were all over the place. His arc was so awful.
2) Finn yelled something about wanting to tell Rey something. Never brought it up again.
3) There was so much predictability. "Take both sabers" GEE I WONDER WHY?!
4) The entire movie was based on Rey being herself, then at the end she takes the Skywalker name? Does that make her an adopted child of Luke or Leia? And in such case she has kissed her cousin or brother.
5) Chewy's faked death was so cheap.
6) The weird ass scene with Lando at the end, I guess a scene got cut.

It did. At some point in the movie, Lando was going to explain why he was on Passana and knew about the Sith assassin that killed Rey's parents (he and Luke were running missions looking for Sith artifacts). During this time, he mentions he had a daughter, but she was kidnapped by the First Order as a young child, as was customary by the FO (that's how Finn became a Storm Trooper). Well, Jannah fits that description (young black girl kidnapped by the First Order). You were meant to connect the dots that Jannah was likely Lando's daughter. But they cut out all that backstory and you're left with that really odd end scene where you like "Is he volunteering to help her find her dad to set up a new adventure or is Lando trying to hook up because you know, Lando"
Either way - sounds like another spin off movie.
I feel like i am in the minority here but there hasn't been a great Star Wars since ESB and not a good one since Return of the Jedi. I nearly walked out of rogue one halfway through since the editing and pacing was so bad. The end nearly saved it, but it was telling that I didn't give a damn when anyone died outside of the robot.
I had a bit of a higher regard for Rogue One, than you did and I liked TFA and would put it into the "good" category. Other than that, I agree and can see why you rate them as you do.
Are we really going after Felicity Jones and Rogue One? Hands down, it was a hell of a movie, and the kind of plot hole fill that fans ache for. Tied well between ROTS and ANH. There needs to be a Dark Empire movie, as stated above, that will fill the plot holes for Rise of Skywalker.

I think you may be in the minority regarding Rogue One. I thought it was the best "new" Star Wars movie we've gotten since the original trilogy.
The tone was much more serious than other SW movies, and I liked the "war movie" feel to it. I found it also gave the best feel of the "lived in" Star Wars universe ("futuristic" tech that is in many ways inferior to our own current technology, places that actually felt real and used/beat up,)
I was ready for the characters to all kick the bucket considering we never saw or heard of them in the original trilogy.
Dude. Yes. Rogue One is my favorite recent SW movie (and honestly, it's just as good as ESB imho). I loved it because it wasn't a movie about a family of Space Wizards, but it was a war movie set on the SW universe.
It also doesn't hurt that the Vader scene at the end is one of the best few minutes of Star Wars ever put to screen

Yep really sets the tone for Vader in ep4/5/6... Gives out that vibe that this guy Vader murdered thousands in cold blood to go along with slaughtering thousands more on the battlefield
I would like for there to be more "stand-alone" Star Wars film that is loosely based on the current universe. Maybe a film on the formation of the Rogue Squadron made famous by Wedge and Luke, but focused on Wedge more than Luke.
I think Disney is gun shy on this after how Solo performed. I don't quite understand it, as though it was far from a masterpiece, I thought it was an enjoyable enough SW romp.
I think the problem it ran into was trying to cram in too many answers to Solo's past. For example, I didn't really need to know how he got his last name or his blaster. Those were not questions I was worried about answering.
There is plenty of material to make stand alones as you suggested though that could really be their own thing without having to be tied to whats already shown up in the films. The formation of Rogue Squadron is a great example. I would love to get a movie about the Witches of Dathomir (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Witches_of_Dathomir). Force using women that ride Rancors and end up battling with Yoda? Yes please.
I know at one point they were going to do a Boba Fett movie, but honestly The Mandalorian has pretty much scratched that itch for me.
I enjoyed Solo. One of Disney's faults is they try to cram too much cultural reference into a film and should instead focus on retelling a story.
We don't need for Star Wars to be like the Marvel Cinematic Universe because at some point, there will be fatigue. I haven't watched any more Marvel films because of it.
This is where I really want Disney to take SW. Now that the Skywalker Saga is over with, give me one off movies like Rogue One. There so much lore and so many interesting time periods to explore.
I'd love to see a dark, gritty crime movie about the Hutt syndicate. I'd also like to see an interesting movie set in the Old Republic. Disney should let creative and talented directors take a swing at something that doesn't involve a Skywalker or Palpatine.

One of the things I always go back to is that what most people consider the "best" movies (4 and 5) only have one major lightsaber battle in each. They only pulled out the lightsabers sparingly (or for utility outside of battle) and it made for better movies.
You could also argue that the less you see of the "Sith Master"* in each movie, and the more you see of his Apprentice instead, the better the movie becomes.

Just saw it. I thought it was a fun movie. I particularly enjoyed the romp through various places trying to find the Wayfinder. Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver really had some of their best acting, IMO, and it did a lot for the movie.
Sure it has some holes, and random stuff, but anyone comparing it to The Last Jedi is crazy if you ask me.
Agreed. For kicks I checked the rotting tomatoes score on the last Jedi and it was in the 90s - really threw me off. Especially since the score for skywalker is in the 50s. Something is off here.
The last Jedi was horrifically bad. So many absolutely pointless scenes. Leia flying through space? The random casino world getting destroyed? The "mutiny"? What was the point of any of those moments? What did they add to the movie?
The Last Jedi is on par with the prequels for me. I can be entertained by it, but it's near the bottom of the list for Star Wars movies. TFA and especially TRoS are both far superior to any of those 4. I still love podracing though.

Finally saw this last night. Ugh, I dont even know where to start with what was wrong with the movie, but I guess I should really tell you something ......
Adding my opinion because that's what you do on the internet...
Overall, I liked it. My one complaint is that there were a lot of plot devices that were there just to get us an additional action scene. The 'CP30 can read sith, but can't translate it' seemed like a device just to get us to the next planet. The 'there's only two sith triangle maps, and oh no! one broke, how will you find the other one?' 'oh it's going to magically appear on Kylo's ship' seemed like it was only there to add tension.
I think that after devoting roughly a decade of my life to the Game of Thrones TV series, it's tough to remember that not all fantasy shows are full of dynamic characters and that sometimes a simple good vs evil story can still be fun. That said, as someone who likes Star Wars for what it is, it was work the $10 ticket. Not sure I'll ever watch again, at least not until I have kids.

I went to an IMAX showing of the movie - after 30 minutes of commercials and previews (the last few of which were in 3D, which is positively nauseating if you don't have the glasses on), the theater accidentally started showing the 3D version of the movie. A few people jumped out to alert the staff, and after the initial title sequence, the screen went blank for 30 seconds, we picked up with Kylo Ren grabbing the wayfinder/holocron, then the movie cut out.
Then we started the previews over, all of which were in normal 2D. So another 20+ minutes (a few previews were in the 3D sequence but not the 2D). Several people walked out, but we all ended up with free movie tickets when we left. But it was super frustrating, to say the least.
It was one of those theaters with real food. I placed my order before entering the theater, they gave me a buzzer, I entered the theater, and my bbq pork sliders and tots were ready right when the movie started. Then I had to get condiments and what not, and apparently I missed a key scene.
I got you. To be fair, the very beginning went super quickly. If I blinked long enough I would have missed it.
The movie pace was super fast, but I still liked it.
At our theater they bring it to you. You should look into upgrading your theater experience. Though not quite real food, more like pub food.
Visually stunning. But yet another member of the Skywalker family (the last one to boot) dies from the exhaustion of using a force power that was previously used (effortlessly) by another character...in the same movie. Not a fan.
One scenario was healing an injury and one was bringing someone who was dead back to life. Completely different.
One was another untrained power meant to show how great a character was, the other was a rule-bending plot convenience (that could've been immediately returned by Rey) intended to kill off the last of the Skywalker family.
One was a force user orchestrating cross-galaxy force-Skyping between two people on multiple occasions. The other was a single person force-Skype that killed off the character from a single use.
Both were needless and contrived deaths.
I think the movie was a solid Okay. I enjoyed the back half of the movie for plot, and the first half definitely seemed like a rushed bunch of action on top of action with no plot at all. I'll definitely watch it again at some point, as I have with the prequels recently, TFA, TLJ, and it will likely slot in middle of the pack for the Skywalker saga.
I did enjoy the plot twist for Rey's origin, especially since a dude like Palpatine pre-lightning fight disfiguration, would probably have a stable of ladies and/or multiple families, considering he was already easily living a double life. I think they wrapped up the saga well enough, and I can accept the TKP analysis of Rey being a grey Jedi for her to survive, although, I would have liked to see her die out at the same time as Palpatine and stay that way with maybe a death at Palpatine's hands for Kylo Solo. The balance of having 0 Jedi and 0 Sith remain would've been a nice bow on the saga.
Anyone else notice that the Kylo/Rey battle in the water looked relatively similar to the lava battle that ended up creating the machinated man of Vader? The sequels seemed to have multiple pulls from the prequels. Not sure if that was lazy design, or if there's only so many ways to skin a cat.

Season gets much better as it goes, but overall it's just okay so far. There's a "jar jar" character that I find insufferable and annoying. Interesting and different than the other series in that it isn't focused on force users or force sensitive characters (yet?) but rather the other side of "regular" folks being impacted by the First Order etc. Does a good job of developing one character in particular in this regard. I think I'll wind up liking the series, but I guess only time will tell

Don't even bother with Resistance. It's too kiddie and never grows beyond that. Plus, its already been "cancelled" in that they said season 2 will be its last.
i haven't watched any of season two because it's currently airing and isn't yet on disney+, but i think i'll definitely watch it once it is.
They disappointingly never really expand on anything. The show is still very much an adventure of the week type deal, usually following the same type of premise of having to retrieve something but accidentally awakening some type of big monster.
After seeing a few of you guys talk about the Clone Wars series, I decided to take a look last night. I got through 8 episodes so far, and I'm definitely enjoying it. The exception is freaking Jar Jar. I didn't mind him that much in the movies, and even was only slightly annoyed by him when I watched them again recently, but my god they took him to an over the top annoying level in his episode that I saw.
a lot of the jar jar episodes are Very Jar Jar, but he's maybe in 10% of the overall series episodes. i agree though!
Started Dark Empire today. Didn't realize I should read Thrawn first but I'll tackle that in a little while.
The way Thrawn was created by Timothy Zahn was amazing and made him a true formidable foe for the Rebel Alliance to deal with.
I would have loved to see Disney just make the last trilogy of movies based on the Zahn trilogy.
Thrawn always stuck out to me as a more formidable military foe than even the Emperor or Vader.
That was my hope when Disney announced they were making a trilogy. Unfortunately, Carrie Fisher passed away and I doubt Harrison Ford want to continue the bad boy vibe of Han Solo. Mark Hamill seem to be the only one who enjoys playing as a jaded Luke Skywalker, which he was in Zahn's trilogy.
They already remade Thrawn in the books and Rebels, so they're not going to make the originals (for better or worse).
Call me a curmudgeon or whatever, one cannot simply remake Thrawn as originally created by Zahn in his blockbuster novels that reopened the Star Wars universe just because Disney says so. I give Disney this salute...
TL;DR. Liked finding out that Rey was a Palapatine however that led me to think that the "rise of Skywalker" was actually the rise of Kylie to become a Jedi and be the hero. Which in my head I liked more. Good overall I thought.

Girlfriend and I watched it again this afternoon and I enjoyed it as much the second time as I did the first. I caught an interesting tidbit this time around. During the scene where Rey is on the ground in front of the Emperor and she can hear the voices of the other Jedi before her (Anakin, Yoda, Samuel L Jackson, etc.) I could have sworn I heard the voice of James Vega from Mass Effect 3.

I was hoping for Ahsoka-centric content on Disney+, and she may yet still appear in Clone Wars S7 and possibly even additional seasons of Resistance. We have no idea what happened to her after all the trippy time-is-kinda-sorta-a-flat-circle-and-the-force-can-be-used-to-kinda-sorta-manipulate-it stuff that occurred in the last season of Rebels. might be nice not to have it be some sad mystery

Watch all six seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, then watch all four seasons of Star Wars: Rebels. They aired as 30 min TV episodes (so ~22 mins without commercials) and are cartoon-animated. Clone Wars is nice as it is pretty much set up as multiple connected 2-4 episode story mini-arcs -- easy to sit down and watch an entire mini-arc in an hour.
If they can handle Mando, they can handle all the cartoons in terms of what is depicted, e.g. nothing graphic or inappropriate. Both animated series get into some decent real-world themes -- definitely not just mindless children's television. You'll appreciate some episodes on a different level than they will just because you'll be able to draw some actual real world parallels

there's chatter that there will be a rebels-sequel series that focuses on where Rebels leaves off with two storylines: one being ahsoka and sabine-centric and the other being ezra and thrawn-centric

I really enjoyed IX and I thought the ending was great and that shouldn't be taken for granted (see: GoT, Sopranos, etc).
Sure I have my quibbles, but I walked away feeling like we were robbed of a movie in this trilogy because TLJ is so out of place. TFA was fine, but it was made worse in retrospect by TLJ being so "WTF?" I was very worried about Sidious coming back as the big bad, but they did it well and the final battle scene was fantastic.
My complaints are the usual Star Wars ones, hyperspace, lasers in space (do they ever stop?), etc.
finally saw it last night. Loved it! lots of fan service and emotion. Only had 2 real quibbles:
1) Luke's ghost raising the fighter as stated above. I get the jedi's can be there and support, but not liking them having such power. Just have Rey raise the fighter.
2) The kiss - sorta surprised it wasn't mentioned yet, I wasn't sure about it. I guess they tried to build up some sexual tension there with the shirtless Kylo in past movies, but I would have been just as happy with a warm embrace.
Last thing and probably because they both are good vs. evil with a savior stories, but along with seeing parallels to the Return of the Jedi, I saw lots of parallels to Harry Potter. Maybe it started with her parents sacrificing themselves to save her, but other parts like her having to go alone to Palpatine, hearing the voices of all the past Jedi, like all the dead that came back to support Harry, Palpatine saying how she was killing all her family/friends who were fighting, even Kylo/Ben's vision with Han was similar to Harry's dream with Dumbledore.
