Been too negative around here lately, and that was a great game with Jalen Cone having his "coming out party" on Boeheim's front porch. Definitely going to watch the second half again for the joy of seeing old Jim whine and complain.

More Bede and Cone at the same time please! Great win tonight for a team that desperately needed one. The ball movement looked good, they had shots when they made to, and the rebounding got better as the game went along. If we keep winning all the ones we're supposed to, win a few 50/50s, and maybe sneak one more upset, this team should be in the NIT. I would consider that a tremendous success year one.

I'm all for tempering expectations this year but I'd actually argue we still very much have the potential to make the NCAA tournament. We have 2 ACC road wins and a neutral site W over Michigan State while 3 of 4 losses are over top 25 teams and BYU is still a very solid 12-4. The weak OOC schedule and a down ACC isn't going to be good for the numbers on our resume but if you look at the remaining schedule, it's not that crazy to see a path to double digit ACC wins.

I was yelling at my tv when we seemed so content at passing it back and forth on the perimeter without attacking. Nolley had an off shooting night but he absolutely was key in beating that 2-3 zone defense in the second half. I don't know why it took so long to drive/attack to break down the defenders and then kick it around, but when we did we went on an absolute tear. Cone is going to be very very good with us, especially once he gets his decision making with the ball in his hands a bit better. He's absolutely lights out as a shooter though. Great team win.

Fans & Atmosphere: Tuesday, 9pm game meant I wasn't expecting the Carrier Dome to be packed. But even half full it got loud (ie see Cuse fans upset at a charge call), so I can only imagine what a full house sounds like. I sat behind the SU band and near a bunch of students. The fans were not welcoming nor hostile, they just left me alone. I got boo'd at once, but it was more in good fun. Nobody gave me side eye when I cheered for a VT basket and I didn't get heckled walking back from the dome.
The game: I found myself questioning CMY's offensive game plan in the beginning. I could see that when Bede was not playing the point, the goal was to get the ball to him in the lane and hope the 2-3 zone would crash on him so he could kick it out to the shooters. Unfortunately the shots weren't falling. When Bede was the point, the game plan seemed to be passing the ball around and hope a defender is late to their spot or VT chuck up a three with under 5 secs on the shot clock. I did see positives in the constant ball movement; I think CMY knew Syracuse wouldn't have many players (only six got minutes) so he was most likely trying to tire them out. I would have liked to see the team drive or use the base line more, but this probably wouldn't have been effective because our team is small and would be smothered quickly.
CMY did a great job substituting his players. He has a good feel of who has the hot hand or who may be a catalyst for a run. I saw this with him subbing in Cattour, then Cone, and then Wilkins respectively to see what line up works. Also he and the players did a good job managing their fouls. I was most impressed with CMY's adjustments after half time. Main example is PJ Horne hitting a baseline layup and it evolving into base line jumper. Horne's first basket was a standard way of beating a 2-3 zone by running a back door, baseline cut if you can draw the center to cheat up (Zach LeDay was great at this). Because Horne scored this lay up very early in the game, I noticed the 2-3 zone shrunk a bit to defend this. CMY changes the strategy and puts his trust in PJ to hit jumpers instead of driving this time. He schemes the Syracuse corner guards to be drawn in while the point guards drives the lane and then hits Horne on the baseline for the shot (kudos to Horne for executing). Second example is the trust he put on Cone to keep shooting. Cone himself said the CMY told him to prove himself and that kid flat out had nerves of steel to take contested shots.
And lastly, the defense was amazing. I don't know if the coaching staff planned it or the players just knew, but they caused havoc on the boards. It didn't seem like the goal was to crash the board and grab the rebound off the rim, but more like preventing the opponent from coming down with the ball cleanly. What I mean by this is, get the possession by causing it to fall from a tipped hand or get the rebound when the ball is loose on the court from swatting it out.
The officiating: Really impressed with it for the most part. I honestly thought we could get screwed being the away team but it was called fairly. It seemed like the refs were more inclined to call fouls outside the lane. Anything under the basket, they let the kids play and scrap for the ball. Our Hokies were very smart in using their height disadvantage to get over-the-back calls. Overal a great game and glad I got to experience the Carrier Dome win

I cut it on midway through the first and watched until we faced the 8 point deficit in the second. I knew I was causing this. I cut the game off and only kept up using twitter and game-cast. I didn't show up in the box score but had a big impact on the result.

It was tough to listen to the announcers for me. I'm sure some here thought they were great or mediocre but, in my opinion some of the random "facts" were tough to listen to. I swear the first time that Cone got fouled on a 3 pointer one of the guys said he was not a shooter. We all seen what happened after that. It was also pretty frustrating to hear about about PJ's "1-2" 3 point shooting on the "year". I really wished they had attacked the zone much sooner by driving, but I can understand the hesitation somewhat because of their size. Passing it back and forth on the outside is just not going to work, ever.

Will Syracuse play in the Carrier Dome until the roof collapses due to age and accumulated snow on the roof? There's no way that hollow atmosphere is a plus for them

Sorry - but I have to disagree. I've been to sold out games in the Carrier dome, and the place rocks. The team feeds off that energy. This was a game during winter break, and the students weren't there in numbers. This isn't seen as a top tier game by their fan base, and the team isn't perceived as a must watch this year. Similar to playing a game at Cassell against a middling opponent during break - it can be pretty quiet. Even so, there were over 16,000 fans at the game, and they did get loud at times. When there are 30,000+ in the place, its pretty electric.
On top of that, the sightlines in the dome are weird when shooting a basketball, which gives SU a serious home advantage.
