Prata starts off with a close win, Gerradi drops his first match.
LaPrade drops his opening bout. Disappointing start...
DMF takes his, Hughes drops.
Smeltzer loses to Duke...
It's going to be a bad day
Borst finishes out the first round with a win.
Honestly, looking for Bolin, DMF, Andonian, and Mitch to do something. Everything else is probably a wash.
Disappointing round. 6 in the semis but no upsets and no bonus points.
Hopefully the 1pm session goes better. I am most interested to see what version of DMF shows up.
Go Hokies
Big matches for Andonian who needs to win to get his spot at the NCAAs, and Moore who needs to win to give himself a shot at the ACC title.
Rumor is Moore may forfeit.
He did. Concussion protocol. Should get an at large bid to the NCAAs.
Prata pretty well dominated, nice to see him show a little bit of fire though.
Adonian with a strong performance, on to the finals and more importantly on to the NCAA's
Great win to secure his bid. Now it's time for him to open it up in the finals with nothing to lose.
Slightly OT, but it's been a tough year all-around for Hokie sports teams
All around worst year in decades.
DMF showing some grit finally! Wentzal upsets Monday, DMF has a much better chance of taking the ACC Title now.
I would have loved to see him get another shot at Monday. Revenge would be sweet. Huge win for McFadden looking to get his third ACC title and improve seeding at the NCAAs.
I'm ok with him getting his chance at revenge in 2 weeks.
Monday loses to 6 seed Coy of UVA in consolations. Fails to get an automatic bid to the NCAAs. He will get an at large bid.
Bolen with a workman like TF to advance to the final.
Him finishing off the match with 1:30 left while Hidlay had to go all the way through rideouts could be a factor in the finals.
Borst loses to end this session.
Looks like Collin and BC both lost in consolation semi's
Girardi got screwed by the official. He was in a good spot to get a reversal and was working on breaking the guys hands to finish and the ref called stalemate. Robie was not happy about that one.
Hughes gets a win and punches his ticket to the NCAAs, will be in the third place match facing 1 seed Harvey from Pitt.
Prata gets a win and qualifies for NCAAs. Hokies up to 6 qualifiers with Moore likely to get an at large after defaulting due to a concussion.
Girardi and BC Laprade both win their 5th place matches to secure bids to the NCAA Championship.
Mueller just got worked in the finals. Was like he got shell shocked when he gave up an early takedown and Camacho just ran away with it.
I love hearing, "Let's Go...Hokies!" by the few loud and proud VT fans!
Andonian loses in the finals. Went for some big time moves and was very close to pulling the off. Great effort against a really good wrestler.
McFadden loses in the finals. Didn't like his approach there. He was only able to get in to one position where he is good and ended up giving up a takedown. Didn't like that he was hanging out in that body lock position for a while when that's definitely not his style.
Just hoping to see some grit at NCAA's. We should have 9 wrestlers with a chance at 10 wrestling at NCAA's. Really happy for Cody, and I hope BC's knee is ok. Outside of that, being last at ACC's (Duke doesn't count) kinda sucks.
Happens when you only wrestle 9. Tech missed out on a lot of points because Moore couldn't wrestle.
Stan doesn't have a chance at a bid so we won't get 10. Also we weren't going to hang a banner for 4th at ACCs anyway so it really doesn't move the needle for me.
That looked like a 2 pt reversal at the last fraction of a second by McFadden that would have sent it into SV.
Also, I can't help but think every time we wrestle UNC, NCST, Cornell, etc., but those especially, that the wrestling team needs a better strength and conditioning approach. It seems like a lot of other teams do a way better job of maximizing their athletes at their weights (muscle wise), and ours just stay the same year after year and are pretty much the same as when they came in.
I don't agree. I think it varies a lot wrestler to wrestler and it is really difficult to gauge how strong they are for their weight class.
Right. Agree, with that point, but my point was that you can tell other programs have their guys growing more year to year.
Growing in strength or improving as a wrestler? If you mean improving then I agree there are some wrestlers that I was looking to take a step forward this year didn't or haven't maintained that success. My thing is I would really like to see the Hokies get better on bottom. I hate seeing wrestlers get ridden out. If you can't get an escape you essentially start down 1 point.
I think we do a great job improving kids as wrestlers, but I'd like to see more strength improvement alongside it. I'm in no way saying I think our program is in a bad spot, or is worrisome, but I think looking at it from someone in a S&C field it could hold us back from taking that next step to being in that top 5 or 3. To your point though, I will say that we're at least better at top and bottom than we were with Dressler. We couldn't hold anyone down with him. It used to drive me crazy.
Bolen takes the 184 title and more than likely the number 1 seed for NCAA"s
That win was HUGE. He has all but locked up the 1 seed for NCAAs which gives him the inside track to a title.
I only saw the the Championship matches; firstly congratulations to Bolen on becoming the ACC champ and most likely the top seed at NCAAs.
Secondly, I was a bit disappointed with the final match of McFadden. He seems to be great in Duals, potentially he's not build for a tough tournament type grind.
Lastly, I was very impressed with Bryce Andonian despite the loss; he has a very bright future in the ACC and hopefully at the Nationals.
With redshirts and new recruits for next year, we are looking good, our recruiting seems to be solid as well. We need to get back to being the top dog in the ACC.
Go Hokies!!!
Throughout his entire career Mcfadden has performed his best in tournaments. See the NCAAs from previous seasons, his runs in freestyle tournaments, and the Midlands this season.
McFadden has had difficulties with his weight cut this year. Consequently, he has struggled with the 1 hour weigh-in for duals. Tournaments are a better fit for his weight cut and you can normally see the difference in his performance.
In many of his duals he has avoided much of his offense, relying on his defense. This has made for many close matches this year, where a take down is all that separates him and his opponent. I think that this approach has gotten him into a non-offensive habit of wrestling and you saw some of that in the final.
Love watching ncaa wrestling but still trying to get a handle on some of the scoring nuances. Question for those in the know - when Bryce threw the UNC guy up and over his head and slammed him to the mat while maintaining double underhooks why wasn't that ruled a takedown? UNC dude was stunned, locked up and had no control.
Just from a spectator viewpoint that was one hell of a move and I could watch that move all day long but why wasn't that 2 pts?
No control and UNC also avoided staying on his back.
Yes in order to get the takedown I think Andonian needs control beyond reaction time which in that case he did not.
Just caught up here. 5th place!? Good Lordy. Just above only Duke!
Mitch gets the at-large bid. Brackets will be out tomorrow.
We have 9 going to NCAA's !!
Bolen is the #2 seed for NCAA's. Personally, I feel like he got screwed out of the #1, but it's up to him to make the most of it.
