Official from NCAA. All NCAA championships including men's and women's basketball will be limited to staff and family. This is massive. Not only to the sport but the economic impact to the these cities and its workers will be massive.

This economically fucks New Orleans and Atlanta, who had to pump money into the local economy to get it ready for the Final Four, only to see any potential for revenue to be eliminated the week before the tournament starts.

Dayton us screwed. Between UD closing and now this they are already a borderline economy city. Then take this out to other sports track and field, softball, baseball, swimming etc and how it will impact a lot of places.
Dayton local here. It won't be a crippling impact, but there will be some pain. Biggest hit will be to the city budget next year.
Lived in Miamisburg for 3.5 years, lots of restaurants and bars are going to take a hit losing UD money and now first four money. Going to hurt that margins bad.
It won't be as bad as you think. UD's home season is already over, so no hit there. Also bars and restaurants aren't closing, so they'll still be full during UD's (and Wright State's) games. The ones downtown will take a hit because of the First Four cancellation, for sure, though. Hotels will get it worse, because now outside fans won't be coming at all. That's a lot of unsold rooms.
UD is sending all students home. That's a lot of lost revenue for things near them.
Yeah that's definitely true, but it's no different from what pretty much every town with a college is going to go through. At least there are locals in the area. I wonder what this does for places like State College PA, where there aren't enough locals to sustain businesses
I would assume the expenses would also be lower as bartenders and waitstaff would also likely be college kids who've since been sent home.

Probably none because we represent a population that likely has overall good health, mostly younger, mostly middle class or better, have access to health insurance and medical care.
There are a couple of Hokies on this site, that are still in China and Japan, and luckily did not get infected.

My wife and I were exposed, she showed symptoms but the test is still out. Temporary quarantine until that comes back. Her aunt and uncle, were exposed and infected completely separately, her aunt is still in the hospital.
How did her aunt and uncle get exposed and were they in Wyoming too?
Her relatives were on vacation in Egypt a few weeks ago, her uncle showed symptoms but recovered before they got home, her aunt started exhibiting symptoms on the way home. My wife's test came back negative though so that's great.

Thanks, its a relief. She was already over the illness, but its nice to know we weren't spreading it around our very small, isolated community. When the wife got tested Wyoming was still free of cases and she was not excited about being patient zero for the state haha.

Reading the responses to this from fans is really disappointing. The careless disregard for facts or advice from experts for "internet researched" opinions is scary not just for this but lots of science based events in the world today.
There's no new advice out there for COVID-19 that hasn't been out there for 100 years during flu season.

It's interesting that South Korea with the lowest death rate at around 0.7% is also the country with the most aggressive testing plan. Math doesn't lie. On the back end of this, we will learn that the total death rate may be about a half a percentage point higher than seasonal flu.
South Korea started testing immediately. We denied tests. They shrunk the spread by testing immediately. We are so far behind.
They did not shrink the spread. They just know of more of the mild case which decreases the death rate percentage.
This is called COVID-19 because it's the 19th Coronavirus. It's just a new cold virus. Literally.
We need to be much more concerned about the Oxy-deaths. 77,000 in 2017. Highways- 38,000 people last year. Oh, and if you get COVID-19, you may want to think twice about going to the hospital... 80,000 people died from catching an infection while staying there - staph, etc. We all need some perspective, and calm.

Listen, you may not be impacted or have any concern, but a lot of people on this board have family members in the "high risk" category, you should probably be considerate of that despite the many unknowns that remain.

It's important to keep perspective that the stock market does not correspond directly with overall economic health. Once the virus is contained and new infections begin to subside, I think you will see a relatively fast uptick. Great time to buy a house or take out a loan now though with interest rates so low.

South Korea was ready unlike most places because of past experiences. They are detected any cases early and treating. That's what keeps death rates down, early detection and early treatment. Well since we won't ever be able to test 20,000 people a day here in the US our death rates are going to be higher.
The death rate will come down by math. If the US reports 1000 cases initially, but 100 people are dead, that looks bad. However, if you change NOTHING except for the fact that you learn there were actually 1 million cases not initially reported, that death rate starts to look more like seasonal flu.
I was under the impression that there was no treatment, only supportive care? If the virus is detected early, I assume it is better because individuals are quarantined and limit further infections, but does early detection help the infected individual? I would think the actual death rate in developed countries should be fairly fixed given what we currently know about the virus.
I hope people can be cautious and allow this thing to play out without additional undue fallout. The numbers currently coming out of China and South Korea the last few days seem promising. I keep hearing reports of up to 70% infection, however the reported numbers do not seem to be indicating this given what we've seen in areas where the virus has been around longest. If everyone could stay 6' away from each other for two weeks this thing would go away, however we all know that's not going to happen. I also don't think the apocalypse is coming. The economic impacts and the amount of blame and vitriol we are seeing are going to far outweigh the costs of the virus in my opinion. If the stock market loses half it's value (it's currently down 30%), and people cannot work, I can foresee us losing more people to hunger and hardship than COVID-19. I hope everyone stays safe and is impacted as minimally as possible.
You can't treat Coronavirus directly you treat the symptoms and complications. Respiratory stresses, dehydration, pre existing medical conditions that can lead to death etc.
I completely understand that. Given this, however, I still think we would see death rates in developed countries, where such care is essentially routine, be very similar unless this somehow affects populations differently or routine care is overwhelmed. I do foresee the unintended fallout being worse than the health effects of the virus. Unfortunately if I'm wrong that's not a good ending either. Let's all try to take care of ourselves and others and set aside the arguments for the sake of getting through this and succeeding on the other side. That's at a bigger risk now than our individual health from COVID-19.
Yea except the US really falls on the bottom of the scale of developed nations. We have had record number of hospitals closing in rural areas, we are short nurses and doctors and our ICU beds are being centrally located at large urban medical centers.
I'm on a local hospital board in a rural system so I'm well aware of the issues there. Hopefully we can work together and address the needs there, as I know we have some underutilized personnel and beds in our small system. The Dow Jones being down 2400 points today scares me more than the preparedness of our local medical personnel.

You need to read about what happened in Italy. Their doctors are coming and saying it mushroomed because no one took it seriously (still went out, went to work, etc). They were having to decide who to take into hospitals because they didn't have enough space.
We should take it serious (be responsible and not panic). Just retract back for a few weeks and let it slow down the spread.
Most of Italy population is in the 45 to 60 age. They were not in a good spot regardless

If you're not going to allow fans, cancel the tournament. This is stupid. The only reason they won't outright cancel is because of TV $$$$$. Apparently the health of the players and staffs isn't a concern since they are going ahead with it. Treat this like pre-bowl alliance football and declare next week's AP #1 national champs, then have a tournament early next season with the top eight in the final rankings.
Yes and no. The amount of interaction between players will be limited and will be known. Small groups of 30 traceable people aren't super risky. That said, if one player on the court is infected with symptoms, she or he is likely to give it others sharing that court.
Having tens of thousands fans interact with complete strangers is an exponentially greater risk to the public. Within the crowd, it seems likely there would be token individuals with symptoms ignoring the advice of medical experts and attending the games.
It's the player being infected that complicates things

That entire team is now likely to have to undergo at least a 14 day quarantine, which would have completely disrupted the Serie A season had it already not been canceled for the time being. And it's probably going to throw a major wrench into the Champions League.
Imagine the chaos if just one player on any team tests positive after a game is played during the NCAA Tournament.

They should be able to test all of the players, coaches, GAs etc. on the eligible teams fairly quickly. If one test positive they stay out and the games go on same as a twisted ankle. I will still enjoy the games from my TV and cuss over my bracket whether people are in attendance or not.

As someone who has attended this for the last 20+ years with my dad, this is sad news, but at least we won't have to make the decision on the risk for ourselves. We'll just have to tailgate in the backyard.
This is the right call. It is infuriating when people compare it to the flu. The flu is usually 40-45m cases and 60k or so deaths each year. If the flu had the death rate of COVID-19 so far in the US (3%ish), that would be close to 1.5m deaths a year to put it in perspective. If we look at the death rate in Italy which is 6.5%, that would be about 3m people.
It is no secret the tournament will go on because of the TV money involved but this is the right call so far.
What's going to infuriate you even more is when we find out how many mild cases were under reported and the death rate actually goes down to about what seasonal flu usually is.
Even if the death rate is comparable to the seasonal flu, we have annual flu vaccines that help prevent the spread of the flu, and even then it infects ~10% of the population. We don't have a vaccine to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, and it seems to be about as infectious as the flu, so without extra controls it stands to reason that much more of the population could get sick.
If the death rate is 0.5% (a conservative estimate), but 100 million people get infected, that's still 500k deaths.
Everything about this is just incorrect from a statistics standpoint. We have the capability to test basically everyone who has seasonal flu-like symptoms which brings the "death rate" for the seasonal flu way down. Most governments don't even have the capability to test everyone with serious symptoms much less the ~80% of people with COVID-19 who have mild/no symptoms. This wildy skews the "death rate." In no way can you extrapolate that rate to the entire population.
It's no coincidence that South Korea, which has the lowest reported death rate at 0.7% is also the country testing the highest amount of people.
I'm no expert in any of this, but when the dust settles I would not be surprised if the death rate for COVID-19 is similar or only slightly higher than the seasonal flu.
I get what you are saying, but I would also add, is that they stopped the spread of the disease by testing early and often.
You aren't hearing about how overcrowded their hospitals are, like you do in Italy, where they have so many bad cases that they have resorted to war time efforts where they are picking who will actually get treatment, and who will die.
By testing early, South Korea avoided overwhelming their healthcare system and the disease is curable, but at the same time, most of these deaths are because there are so many cases to take care of at one time.
Moral of the story, South Korea was proactive, Italy was not. The United States is still not being proactive enough.
Proactive is shutting the barn door while the horse is still in its stall. You don't get to close the door after it runs off and still call it being proactive. A travel ban 2 months ago would have been proactive. Ramping up test kit production 2 months ago would have been proactive. Now we're at the point where more extreme measures (complete lockdown, curfews, etc) would be proactive, but we're not willing to implement them because the costs are too high. Coincidentally, the cost of those earlier measures was a whole lot less when they should have been implemented but weren't.
The fact that some states didnt have the ability to test for coronavirus until yesterday (not sure if all 50 have the test now) just shows how ill prepared the US is.
FWIW the death rate in Italy is 5-6%.
And what happens when the cases get so high that access to medical care becomes limited? Suddenly that "low" death rate starts spiking because of preventable deaths.

I live in upstate SC, there are lots of churches where hundreds, sometimes thousands of people are in a service at one time.
Cancelling sporting events won't do a whole lot of good if all those same people are sneezing and coughing all over each other at a worship service.
My coworker in Kentucky said the state has sent information to churches that services should be canceled (her husband is a pastor). I think it's currently voluntary. church services might be even more important to cancel because their population tends to be much older and more susceptible to Covid-19.

We've also encouraged our people that if they are going to go to the store and "stockpile" to do so not out of fear but out of love for their neighbors in the event of an emergency situation.

Dream scenario - The NBA resumes the season in June, with playoffs taking place in August...which carries us right into football season. MLB plays a shortened season starting in June which they should be doing all the time anyway.

I can't imagine a scenario where the tournament actually takes place.
Are they going to test every player before each game? Or take their temperature? What happens if a member of the team tests positive for the virus, or even has a fever? Do they disqualify that player? Ban the team? What if a losing team has a team member with a fever or tests positive, does the winning team from that game get banned from further competition?
No chance they hold the NCAA's.. none... the media pressure alone to "do the right thing for unpaid kids" will be enough.
