Hello TKP!

It is great to get a chance to connect with you guys during this crazy time. It has been a wild ride for me since I finished my career at VT. After getting drafted and spending a year on the practice squad with the LA Rams, my life consisted of training and waiting. I had a few workouts, went to training camp with the Bills, and then a minicamp the following year with the Titans and ended up not sticking.

During the 2018 year I spent time coaching at Benedictine High School and helped with their offense. Last year, I was an assistant at Hanover High School, my alma mater. After the year, the Head Coach job became available and I was fortunate to be named the head coach back in January. This is also around the time where I started my own training programs through Sports Reality in Mechanicsville, Va. My programs all fall under my brand called EZDAY. I run adult classes in the mornings at 5am, I help those who want to play college football in the afternoons, this program is called NextLevel, and then I do Position Training for younger kids in the evenings.

Obviously, the virus has shifted things a bit. Everything has transitioned to an online program. My life during this season has been consistently making workout videos for the team and for my programs at EZDAY.

I look forward to chatting with you guys!

Thanks for stopping in! Man, your senior day performance is something that will never be forgotten. How did it feel to have such an explosive game as your last in Lane Stadium?

It was awesome!! Definitely an amazing day all around. Any time you get a chance to beat up on those guys is fun. Then getting engaged on the same day definitely made it special.

What is the funniest moment you witnessed as part of the team, on or off the field?

What is your go-to campus meal?

Anything Wyatt Teller did. Most of which I will not post about!

My go-to spot would probably be west end.

This is all I needed to know about Sam Rogers

As you may or may not know, the moment you arrived on campus to be named a starting fullback, there was a cult following surrounding you. How did that make you feel as a student-athlete?

Comment Disclaimer: My comment are meant to be taken as-is. If you cannot handle it, do not hit ‘Reply All.’

side note to this - i was filling in for a certain recruiting outlet that day and was charged with interviewing incoming freshmen at VT's media day. I interviewed Chuck Clark, Wyatt Teller, Motu, Kendall Fuller, etc. and asked why they chose VT. Sam was easily the most impressive interview of the day. I remember that he wasn't even really on my radar (no disrespect intended, sir) because guys like Fuller, Hodges, and Teller were the main targets. Sam told me he came to VT because he wanted to win championships in a family-type atmosphere. He was stone cold serious, locked eyes with me the whole interview and I left with a certainty that he was going to be something. Now I definitely didn't know he was going to end up being the cult hero he became, but I'll never forget that day and that conversation.

Second question for Sam - how much weight did you put on at VT because from what I remember you were pretty lean that summer of 2013, at least compared to where you ended up.

I came in around 215 and finished around 235

Don't love the idea of a "cult" haha. I am honored that people thought highly of me.

You became a fan favorite when Aaron Moorehead talked about you showing up to practice with the JUGS machine.

On a 1 to a LOLUVA scale. How fun of a time was it thrashing Uva on senior day back in 2016?

Is there anything beyond LOLUVA?

Only infinity 😂

Cut and divide it all right in two

I can remember one game in my playing time (small high school, but playing against a guy who ended up at tech) where I tried to block their big defensive end. Lined everything up perfectly, and delivered a block that should have worked. Instead, the guy didn't budge. The thought that went through my head was, "oh, shit." He ended up not making the play because it died elsewhere. But in that moment, I knew I had bitten off more than I could chew.
Was there ever a player you attempted to block who gave you a similar feeling?

There was never a time when I thought I could't do it, but there were definitely some "welcome to college football" moments. I specifically remember getting blown up on two special teams plays in my first game against Bama. I honestly couldn't even tell you who did it. Tried to put it out of my memory. Thanks for bringing it back up......

Don't worry about a thing. We at TKP have the best video review people on the internet, I am sure we can find this out for you.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Sam - who talked Trash the most to you? A single player? A single team? Were you a trash talker yourself?

UNC talked a lot of trash. So did Miami and ECU. I am more sarcastic than anything else. I liked to ask people if it was tough losing by so much after putting in so much work during the week.

Any good Beamer stories?

When lined up as an H-back and executing a wham block on the opposite side of your alignment, do you depend on a call by that tackle to determine if you are kicking out the edge, sealing the edge, or turning up? Or is there a separate play call for each of your blocking assignments.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I upvoted this

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Usually when you think of a wham block, you think of trapping a 3 technique or the shade. You can see this play if you look at when James Develin got smacked pretty good by Suh in the first drive of the Super Bowl against the Rams a couple of years ago. Wham is a separate play call from a player responsible for C or D gap on the backside of a zone, which is what I would do a lot at Tech. We didn't run the wham play when I was there, but in most offenses that I have been a part of the H knew when they called zone that he was responsible for the backside regardless of whether he lined up playside or backside. The coaching point is to just stay tight to the hip of the Tackle and block the first thing that shows. Usually a defensive end unless there is a stunt.

As a tailback on a zone or stretch run, walk through your fundamentals. On which step do you make your read to cut back, get north south, or run wide. Which OL are you reading?

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

It depends if you are under center or in the gun. If you are under center, more seen in the NFL, then you drop step and aim at the butt of the tight end, or the outside leg (depending on coach). If you are offset in the gun then you are usually coming flat across the QBs toes.

You read defenders, not necessarily Offensive Linemen. You are reading the hats of the defenders in the D or C gap then work back. You take it one gap at a time. The greatest backs are able to press it to the line of scrimmage as long as possible and not cut back too early. The longer you press the heels of the line, the more time your lineman have to work to the second level. Don't get greedy seeing green grass early. Take it one gap at a time working outside in.

Walk us through your favorite play to run at VT. What was your assignment, and what were the key assignments from your teammates which were critical to make the play pop. If there was a particular game where that play was going, let us know.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I loved running power. As a blocker and as a runner. Power, starting playside and working back, is when the playside Tackle, playside Guard and the Center, are working back. They are responsbile for the down lineman back to the backside LB. You end up getting a double team with the playside Guard and Tackle on the down lineman then they work off to the backside backer. The backside guard is pulling for the playside LB. The backside Tackle is in a "Blunt" block. His job is to step down to protect the B gap then work back out to protect the edge. The important thing is to first protect the B gap. The Center and the Tackle will squeeze this to protect the pullling guard hole that is left open.

You pull people because you end up getting an advantage with angles on the back blocks. You have great leverage blocking back. It allows linemen to be aggressive.

The H is responsible for kicking out the first thing off of the playside Tackle's hip. The RB is taking a shuffle step then going down hill to the A gap. Then, he will begin to get on the hip of the puller. It is "A gap -- follow the puller -- bounce"

I love this play because it was downhill and there was not much thinking involved. Trayvon had a big run against Miami my senior year when I was blocking. You can also see how this play can bounce if the DE crashes down hard. This happened against Arkansas. In a situation like this, the H can continue to wash him down and the RB will get to his "bounce" read.

As a runner, we had a couple of big plays against UVA on this play with my guy steven peoples taking care of edge.

If you ever have a few extra hours in the day and want to break down some film. Holler. This was a great answer by the way.

#TeamRuleBlocking

As a trainer, what are some of the at-home pilometrics and drills which can be done without equipment that keep an athlete or prospective athlete as football ready as possible?

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

The good thing about plyometrics is you do not have to have a ton of equipment. Find things to jump on. You can work being explosive right outside in your yard/neighborhood. Speed, agility, and plyometrics, can be easily worked on during a time like this.

The hard part about this is keeping on muscle mass without access to a weight room. You have to get creative. Put whatever you can find into a suitcase or backpack. Do weighted Pushups, SL Squats, Step ups, etc.

French, when you relocate to the RIC area, perhaps you and Sam could arrange an occasional podcast/joint article/roundtable/etc.? You guys together for half an hour would be highly educational and entertaining.

Ok, this question is going to be a little odd. So, buckle up.

Did you every notice a crazy lady calling you "Little Davy" when you were in West End?

My mom used to work there and she swore that you looked like me and told me she would call you that whenever she saw you in there.

Personally, I don't see it. As anyone who knows me on here can attest, I am obviously more dashing.

I was just curious if you ever actually heard this and how crazy you thought the lady was? I apologize if my mom embarrassed you. She's been doing it to me for almost 38 years.

Edit: BTW, I have been dying to ask you this for years. And don't be offended by the "little" part. I'm 6'3" 320lbs.

If you play it, they will win.

I don't know whether to be disappointed that you didn't hear her/don't remember or pleased that the embarrassment of every time she told me she saw you and said it was all for naught. I can't remember how many times I said, "You said what? To who?" followed by a facepalm.

Anyway, thanks for the memories and giving me the chance to FINALLY ask you about this.

Oh, and FYI, Mrs. APFOW loves her some Sam Rogers. A little more than I am comfortable with, TBH.

Having played a hybrid FB/TB/TE role at Tech, was it tough trying to transition to a more traditional position in the NFL? If you could do college all over again knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

To be honest, it was a little strange with the Rams. I was on their team, but they were going with more 12 and 11 personnel. Not many Fullback sets. I was practicing more running back than anything else.

If I could do it over again, I hope I would stop overthinking and just go play. Plenty of plays I wish I had back, but that is life.

what's the most almost-arrested you've ever been?
what's your least favorite work of the devil?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

1. I was in the car as a high schooler when one of my friends was attempting to borrow a street sign permanently.

2. Not a huge fan of anything he does, but Jesus has already won, so I like to remind him of his future.

Sam! Big fan. Thanks for always being an awesome Hokie, on and off the field.

What was your favorite on-field moment, and why?

Throwing a touchdown against Miami... I love throwing the rock.

Starting your career at VT as a walk-on, then earning your scholarship and becoming such a key figure on the team must have been a wild experience. What was your biggest motivation that kept you going to push you from walk-on, to key figure on a major college program, to the NFL?

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

He didn't start as a walk-on. He started as a run-on. Get your facts right.

There are short term motivations (doubters, hype videos, etc.) then there are long term motivations. These are more internal and they don't adjust based on outside circumstances. I always have and always will be pushing to develop everything God has given me to the best of my ability.

Would you be averse to legally changing your name to Sam MF Rogers?

Also, could you (please, sir) tell us what an average day/week was like on the practice squad for an NFL team?

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

We do everything that the 53-man roster does during the week. We just didn't travel. At home games we were on the sidelines in sweats.

Sunday - Game day
Monday - Film Review/Lift
Tuesday - Off day (rehab, additional lift, film)
Wednesday - Work day. Padded Practice
Thursday - Work day. No pads or "shells"
Friday - Fast Friday. Shorter practice. Up tempo.
Saturday - Walk Throughs

Average work day would usually be:
630 - Breakfast, additional work
8 - Lift Meetings
11 - Walk Thru
12 - Lunch
130 - Practice
4 - Meetings
6 - Dinner/additional work

I could be off on these times but this was about what I experienced.

You're the man. One of the most awesome moments I've seen at Lane was when you caught that wheel route against OSU and housed it. If Brewer doesn't go down after half, what do you place the odds that we win that game?

We would've won.

Yeah, I believe there is great respect for VT. Everyone loves the atmosphere. Everyone that I have talked to that is actually being recruited seems to love the culture of the team.

It comes up semi-regularly around here, but how do you feel about the current team's approach to player alums? Do you think there's any difference in opinion between the folks who played at least some under Fu and the guys who only played under Beamer?

I haven't heard any complaints from the guys that I talk to.

In regards to attempting to stick in the NFL, what were the aspects that felt the most different from college football? Do you think there are any common themes that determine which great college players succeed in the NFL or fail to find their spot?

A lot of the NFL is getting the timing right. Finding the right fit with the right scheme at the right time.

As a player you experienced the transition from Beamer to Fuente. Now as a coach you will work to transition from your predecessor. What are some thing Fu did that you will emulate, and what will you do differently?

"It's always great to beat UVA, that makes us all smarter and better looking for a couple days".

Coach Fuente taught me so much on how to coach. I try to emulate everything I can from him in regards to establishing a culture, leadership, and much more. Obviously, each person has their own unique personality that will cause some "differences." However, foundationally we would be the same I think.

Sam the Beast, you are what Tech is and always was about. Your work ethic and team-first demeanor defined your tenure and we as the HokieNation salute you. I know that you will continue to impact young athletes and your Alma Mater. I stopped by the James River Winery to pick up some wine for my wife and I believe your Aunt was working there and mentioned you since I was rocking VT gear (super nice lady btw). Anyway, I wanted to know what your thoughts are on how VT can upgrade recruiting to land both diamonds-in-the-rough/underrecruited guys and also land some of the program-changing blue chippers that can change the program's trajectory?

Jeremiah 29:11 and Go Hokies!

To be honest, if I ever got into college coaching I would have a lot to learn in regards to recruiting. I do not know the ins and outs of it. I would be making stuff up if I tried to give my opinion on it.

Thank you for your kind words!!

How many times do your players have to push a truck through the parking lot before you allow them to practice? 🤔

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

KCCO

If you were in charge of walk-on recruitment at Virginia Tech, what attributes are looking for in "diamond in the rough" prospects?

Heart, obviously, but succeeding at the next level is more than heart. They have to be good football players. I love the movie "Rudy" but that isn't who you are looking for. Rudy didn't really play. You want guys that can play football. Guys that are the best in their respective region and for whatever reason have slipped through the cracks.

First of all, thanks for doing this!

I'm interested in the coaching transition - what was the worst part of moving from Beamer to Fuente, and what was the best or most surprising part?

For me it was all positive. We went from a blue collar coach to a blue collar coach. Great transition. Fuente did a lot to honor Beamer's legacy which was awesome for everyone involved.

Advice you would give to a junior thinking of going pro?

What was your first impression of Fuente/Cornelson - what was the most difficult thing about switching regimes/schemes etc. that fans might not think of?

Coaching philosophy?

Coach Foster, Coach Beamer, Coach Fuente - you have to coach with one, play for one, sleep with one jk, hang out with one??

1. Think it all the way through. Ask people that will tell you the truth, not just what you want to hear.

2. My first impression was that they were both laid back. I found out very quickly that Fuente was anything but laid back. Very passionate. Him and Coach Corn have a great dynamic with each other.

3. Build the culture and execute. A variety of schemes have won championships. It comes down to doing your job.

4.
Hang with - Coach Beamer. I have already played for him and his life seems pretty great right now.
Play for - Coach Foster. I think I still have a little LB in me.
Coach with - Coach Fuente.

Sam,

No question here. Just wanted to thank you for all the contributions you made to the Hokie community over the years and for putting it all on the field every time you played. It was a true pleasure following your progress through the years! Glad to hear you're doing well!

How was your time in LA? We recently had a small friendly debate whether it would be better to spend your college years in LA (at USC in particular) or Blacksburg. Want to weigh in?

Blacksburg fits me better. Smaller town, less expensive. Most people living in Blacksburg, outside of students, are from there it seems like. That is not the case in LA.

How much do players, recruits, or coaches pay attention to message board / twitter criticism or praise? Does overly aggressive/knee jerk criticism like we've seen some of the last couple of years have a negative impact on the program?

Thanks for doing this Sam!

We have probably paid attention to it too much. I think it is important to not speculate and to think if you would ever say this to someone face to face. If the answer is no then do not post it.

At the end of the day, I believe it is best to defer to the professionals in the business. I get that it is entertainment and it is fun to comment on this stuff, but there should probably be a bigger push to give coaches and players the benefit of the doubt. This is what they work on nonstop and they do it at a high level.
