This isn't a rant about the existence of TKPC or having a members-only area. Man's gotta eat!
My only request is that the UX be fixed for those of us not in TKPC. The wall of "Join The Key Player's Club to read comments posted in its members only forum" comments in the Recent Comments section, as well as no clear indicator in the Tracker that a thread isn't readable, makes the site very difficult to parse if you're not in TKPC at the moment. Thanks!

We have not, historically, received anything to indicate whether or not an article is TKPC-only. Whenever TKPC was rolled out, people asked Joe to put some indicator and he essentially said no. So I wouldn't expect it for this new feature either. You just have to click on it and if you can't read it you can't read it.

Well, depends on what is specifically being talked about.
If you're talking about how people experience TKP, then UX is probably correct.
If you're talking about a specific part of TKP that needs to be fixed that would make things better, UI (or GUI) might be the better descriptor.

This is pretty standard for any website that does a subscription. The whole point is to tease you into paying for the premium content. NYT will give you a nugget before they tell you have to pay. Same with WAPO. They aren't going to let you filter out paid pages, because every time you hit a paid page its's essentially a targeted advertisement.
Great point. Related to that, if they hid everything that was paywalled, you'd have zero idea of what you were missing for not paying. If you don't see it, you don't miss it and it would be likely that very few people (who hadn't already joined) would join in the future.
On the other hand, plenty of sites do mark pages as premium content. ESPN, all of the Business Journals, TechCrunch, etc etc etc. Here's an example on ESPN's front page:
A lot of sites with paywall popups you can stop the page before it fully loads and get around it.
I've found that most sites putting up paywalls go through a list of stages. First, they put the popups you refer to, then after a while they realize the workaround you just pointed out. At that point they change it to load the splash page first with the content behind it and check subscription status to remove the splash page, then after a while they realize people can either remove the element from their browser or set up a user script in Greasemonkey or whatever to get around it. Finally at that point they fix the workaround by checking subscription status server-side and only loading the article content if applicable, which is really the most efficient way to do it anyway.
Oh absolutely. I was just saying there are several that don't go much further than the first load in. I rarely take advantage of it.

Seconded. Please hide TKPC only threads for non-TKPC members or at least tag them as such.
There should be the key logo or something next to a thread that indicates it as paid content, a dollar sign (like some other forums) or something.
Me clicking on something only to find out it is paid content and wasting my time doesn't make me want to join the club more that's for sure.

By my definition, you're a power user of the site. In the trailing 365 days you posted 241 comments, or relative to a subscription cost, $0.34 per comment. You're highly engaged, use TKP consistently, have received the benefit of it without paying a thing, and all of a sudden a — what — 2-second 'waste of your time' (1 second per click) is all of a sudden discouraging you?
Its amazing to think of how this age of high speed internet has changed our definition of "inconvenience".
Most of what I look at pertains to recruiting and general news and updates. I find that TKP is a reliable source on those elements and tend to be on the leading edge of the news.
While I love that French or Brian go in depth on X's and O's, I don't spend as much to reviewing that information. Whether it be me checking in during the day while at work on my computer, or checking for updates/news on my cell the rest of the day. I don't allot a lot of time to sit down and read those articles.
In the past, there was a post that would then become the players club, but at least it gave you a paragraph or two to determine what the rest of the story may be.
Lately, it's just a headline and then nothing. Which is why I noted that it makes me less inclined to join. At least before, I saw what I was missing and this would potentially drive me to further my interest in joining.
Again, most of my use is for critical program updates and news, so I haven't decided that I would get my worthwhile out of the paid content since I don't have the time.
As for joining, I own my own business and have to make a variety of sacrifices. My taxes for 2018 noted me below the poverty level, 2019 and the start of 2020 was picking up momentum to the point where I was much more capable of potentially donating money to the program or adding in some subscriptions. However, now with the current situation, I'm very conservative as I need to make sure my business can maintain and my staff are taken care of.
Per your comment about wasting time, I tend to use my smart phone for most access. Since there are currently advertisements on the site, when I click on a topic, I get hit up with a full screen ad, which takes a little while to go away. To get past that, only to end up on a blank page, requiring further navigation, takes more than the 2 seconds you are noting.
I get it, you have put together a great resource and I appreciate it, so I'm not upset about the ads or anything like that. It would just make sense to me to add a logo in the forum so that people know this is paid content. For those in the club, it would allow them to see their money at work and may drive more users in that direction. For those not in the club, they would see more topics they are missing and may help them understand that there is more paid content that they aren't experiencing. Right now, all topics look the same. Its not like this is a foreign concept either, as other forums note paid content.
Anyway, just a thought. You are always asking for input and note that you can't do it alone, so sometimes suggestions should be seen as someone helping and not a negative.
I noticed that the thread authors have a key image added if they author is TKPC, but it's not close to a perfect overlap of "this thread was made by TKPC member" and "this thread is TKPC only", but I do appreciate the little change
