I saw the headline and the first thing I though of was that tons of people are going to Smith Mountain Lake and not social distancing.

My mom's college roommate's daughter had a graduation party at Mountain Lake back in 2016. It was pretty full then. You can take my word for it because I flipped a canoe in the middle of the lake.

senior year (fall 2006), we hiked around to jump off some rocks on the far side and my future wife and some others swam across back to the gazebo shown in that picture. We took our kids hiking there in 2015 and only the very deepest portion had water in it. You had to go down some stairs to a floating dock they had there with a couple canoes. That was right below the rocks we'd jumped off of in college, just another 30+ feet down below where the surface was when we jumped.

I went there in 2008 for October Fest. Tech was playing Boston College that day actually (a loss). It was completely dry except for a little stream that runs through it. Every time I go there, it's the opposite of what it was the last time.

Was this via your best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend who heard it from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ferris pass-out at 31 Flavors last night?

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

It sounds pretty serious...

I figured I'd get a reply when I said that. Haha. I should have just said "a family friend."

How cool is it knowing that Dirty Dancing was filmed there?

No way... get out of here... Really??!!

Leonard. Duh.

Considering this is 2020, are we sure its not filling back up with acid?

Just gotta watch out for those brain eating amoeba.

I may or may not have recycled a dozen or so beers into it over 4th of July weekend so I am sure that helped bring the levels up...

Interesting story, when the lake naturally drained itself in 2008. They found the bones, shoes, class ring and other belongings of a man that went missing in 1921.

No one puts Baby in the corner

I still remember when they found it, was crazy to see his shoes still mostly intact. They don't make shoes like that anymore.

A 1904 class ring from what is now Clemson University, a silver belt buckle with an elaborate engraving and a pair of old wing-tip shoes are among the items enclosed in a 12-foot-long glass display case in the lobby of Mountain Lake Hotel. The items belonged to Samuel Ira "Si" Felder, a 37-year-old New York man who drowned at the lake while on an outing with his wife and friends on July 23, 1921.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

I was still living in Giles then. There were some great stories and suppositions put forth, but excessive libation and some sort of romantic entanglements were rumored.

You were still living in Giles in 1921??

He's old.

Everything about this is very creepy.

Bob: What would ya say ya do here?

Brad: I already told you! I iron out the minutiae so Justin doesn't have to. I have people skills dammit! What the hell is wrong with you people?

Old, but not that old. 2008, of course.

A lot of my geology professors at Radford spent an excessive amount of time there working to try and figure out what was causing it. Lots of diving involved. Pretty neat stuff.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I feel like living in Radford would give some one a lot of free time to study rocks.

I have no rebuttal to that. True statement.

Didn't realize some many giles folks were here as I too am one. I remember when they were filming and seeing helicopters flying in swayze a couple of times during filming when I was in grade school. I believe the remains they found was from a West Point graduate (class ring) and his fiancé spent a boat load (No pun intended) of money trying to find his remains With divers back when it happened and the shoes were from sax 5th Avenue. Good to see the lake filling back up....crazy geology in Giles county with fault lines and such that apparently caused it to drain originally....god I need hokie football

I will never forget having Bob Lilly, RIP, as a teacher and realizing he was the one that stepped on Baby's foot in the gazebo.

She is the Mom of one of Hokiehigh's parents.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Haha..egbert👊🏻...well she won't mind since she has passed...she was Nancy Dowdy and taught nursing at the Giles vocational school from I believe 1965-1999 when she retired and a nurse at the Giles hospital From the early 60s until 2003 When she also retired from that profession. Not sure how she pulled all those hours all of those years but was the rock of the family

HokieHighVPI03

I don't THINK I knew her. But the name sounded awfully familiar. I searched her obit hoping for a picture, but it didn't have one. However, by her list of grandchildren and your VT grad year, I am fairly certain I know who you are. If your fam are huge Steelers fans, I know exactly who you are. LOL.

Sorry for your loss, bud.

If you play it, they will win.

HokieHighVPI03

You know who I am too. You just don't realize it. 6'3" ginger. You used to, may still, be good friends with my cousin that lived up on the "hill". The most I saw of you was waaaay back in the day when you were always up there for Scouts.

Good to see you on here. Hope you and yours are doing well.

If you play it, they will win.

My father is from Giles. Grandfather was an engineer at celanese. But after he retired he was the old man at talking about WVU football in the waiting room Steve Newberry's. So I spent a lot of time in Pearisburg as a child.

My grandmother and grandfather and my father worked there so they probably knew each other...I remember my folks buying a car from newberry's when I was maybe 3 or 4 years old....good stuff man

HokieHighVPI03

Probably did know each other as it's not a large town. I dont know if my grandfather liked Ford or he was supporting one of the only other Mountaineers in town.

P.S. if any one bought a cane from mountain lake gift store, there is a high probability that my grand father made it.

This sub-thread:

I do art stuff.

I know you're poking fun, but this IS Giles in a nutshell. Everyone knows everyone or at least has heard of them. In my case, I'm kin to most everyone. Both sides of my family are large and from Giles. Put it this way, my prom date had the same last name as my mom's maiden name and I legit had to run a name check by mom before I asked her out. Can't be too careful. We're CLOSE to WV, but we AIN'T WV.

I always considered Giles County and Monroe County the exact same place, just one is in VA and the other WV.

You need to take into account the other end of the county, over Newport way. Was surveying over that way one day and a fellow stopped by to see what we were up to. Said he really hated to see our crew, because every time he did, he got another PhD for a neighbor. But get out there around the Narz, now...

Interesting. You won't find many PhDs in Monroe County. My experience with Giles is somewhat limited to mutual friends in Monroe County. They all definitely remind me of each other though (in a good way; all nice people).

VT casts a big shadow.

So, I'm convinced everyone in Giles county is a Martin. One of the two of you was a Martin, right?

Negative. Not a Martin. I'm sure some cousin down the line hitched their wagon to one though.

Lol...

I am going to have to go up there and take a photo. I keep coming back to see if somebody has posted a photo, no luck.

I'll be up there on Thursday dropping my daughter off at her grandfather's. You gonna be there before then?

I'll be by myself on my way back so it won't be hard to drop by and grab a photo.

Might be this weekend, I have to help a friend on the north end of Blacksburg load his moving van.
