We need something else to occupy our time if the season is cancelled. I propose dessert olympics. Something along the lines of the cake, pie, and other dessert groups band together, share recipes, find the one or two they like best, and people make them, eat them, then argue which is better. There could be elimination rounds like cake vs cookie and pie vs some other dessert. I feel like between cooking, eating, and arguing, we might be able to occupy ourselves til there's football again...?

I humbly submit Sachertorte as the finest dessert in the world
I used to live in Germany when I was very young, and this sounds very familiar, but can't remember a taste. I'll have to find a recipe unless you've got one to share?
Don't necessarily agree, but a leg for the reference!
It's basically chocolate cake with raspberry filling between the layers. It's the famous dessert of Vienna (Austria, not Virginia).
Oh, I'm definitely going to have to make it then!
Raspberry? I thought it was apricot.
Ah well, off to the googles.
I believe the filling can vary, but I just went with filling the place that created it in Vienna (Hotel Sacher) though I've had it in a few places.
EDIT: I googled it and it does say apricot. I remember the filling being red and tasting like raspberry but apparently I might have had the rona a few years ago as evidently my taste buds waived bye-bye a while back. Sheesh.
Now that you say that - apricot does sound more familiar to me. I think I have had that!
The best recent dessert I had was just a small block of honeycomb. Every cell pops in your mouth like a taut little blueberry but is way way sweeter. Simple and awesome.
I humbly submit:
Doberge Cake from NOLA
Real NY Cheesecake with a sour cream based topping
The classic red velvet cake
The classic apple pie
For the west coasters: Marionberry Pie
Brilliantly played.
So much wrong with this post
Judge Snells always gets a leg
That's Judge Smails! Be careful, he's sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. He didn't want to, but felt He owed it to them.
#1 seed.. Poundcake with Caramel flavored icing, layered like 6 times- thin layers.
Submission wise: I submit the cast-iron skillet chocolate chip cookie into the cookie category.
I'm unfamiliar with this. Do you have a recipe?
recipe was originally from America's Test Kitchen. Melting most of the butter in the pan until it is essentially brown butter results in a wonderful toffee flavor in the final cookie. Also, don't skip the mixing/resting steps, you want a very uniform mix of the wet ingredients (and no chunks of scrambled egg at the end). You can use any size skillet, but baking time will vary depending on cookie thickness.
Recipe makes 1 giant cookie
Remember to pour a glass of cold milk for maximum deliciousness.
Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie

Ohmagerd! That looks fargin amazing!
Its pretty spiffy
Edit: found a better pic
A local restaurant in Harrisonburg sells two versions.
cookie skillet
Freshly baked chocolate chip cookie dough served hot and ooey-gooey, topped with Bruster's vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and hot fudge | 7.49
s'mores skillet
Our homemade cookie dough with graham cracker crumbs, topped with chocolate chunks, graham cracker and marshmallows cooked golden brown | 6.99
I made this last night. Sadly I didn't have a 12in skillet, so I used a 10in. Also didn't know to wipe the skillet clean, but whatever....
It was awesome, though I needed to adjust baking time to account for the thicker cookie. We added 3 minutes but I'd advise to add at least 4-5min for a 10in skillet. The browned butter was top notch.
Original recipe:
https://www.americastestkitchen.com/recipes/9242-cast-iron-skillet-choco...
we never wipe the skillet clean as we transcribed the recipe from video that never got written down in ours.
Edit: in that vein, the america's test kitchen youtube channel is pretty great if you are looking for some cooking show stuff to watch that isn't just Cooking Reality TV. I enjoy some Nailed It and Chopped as much as the next person, but it is refreshing to watch people make stuff and tell you how they did it sometimes without drama music and commercial cuts made to increase the tension.
Creme brûlée and key lime pie requesting a seed.
Key Lime and Lemon Meringue are the best.
#1 Always will be a solid French Silk Pie with graham cracker and honey for the crust.
#2 is always a solid Tiramisu
#3 is always cake is overrated
What debate, ice cream is the best dessert in existence. It is delicious onit's own, comes in about 69 million different flavors, and makes really boring desserts like cake and pie edible if you throw a few scoops on it
This is a sound argument. I have no rebuttle.
I submit the chocolate mousse cake from Mary's Cakery and Candy Kitchen in King George, VA. (And while you're there, pick up some orange creme fudge, it's delish.)
This contest is now over.
Chez Francois has a plum tart with cinnamon ice cream that is amazing.
The amish bakery in Oakland, md (sugar and spice) has amazing apple turnovers.
I read the title and said to myself:
"Wouldn't it be too hot to hold the Olympics in the desert?"
Really need to stop drinking....
Or drink more...
No kidding. That would be as insane as holding the World Cup in the desert.
Caveat - I know about as much about soccer as UVA fans know about football.
Are they actually playing (or did they already play) the world cup in the desert?
Yes, they are scheduled to play in Qatar in 2022 during the winter. However, there is a lot of controversy about Qatar's selection since their bid was 1. rife with rumors of bribery 2. accusations that they essentially used slave labor to build their infrastructure (and hundreds of the workers died in the process)
With that in mind, give it to England instead
Nike won't print the word Redskins on NFL T Shirts, but they will be a big time sponsor of major sporting events held in kigdoms/dictatorships that don't believe in equal rights for women and others. Love it.
There must not be a marketable hashtag behind it yet. If one surfaces, they will pivot rapidly.
Thanks for the education
Best or second best thing I have ever tasted in my life. Think it is also the only 5 star restaurant I have ever eaten at - link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Bec-Fin
Apricot sorbet at Le Bec Fin (alas, restaurant is closed now)
If we do a best savory dish, the other item in the running for the best tasting thing I have ever had is - chicken picatta at The Kitchen Consigliere. Restaurant is still open. Fun fact: it is owned by someone who did time for being in the mob. Link below. Make sure to dress nice and show respect if you go!

If the White Witch would have had Krispy Kreme donut bread pudding with vanilla ice cream to give out instead of Turkish Delight, Narnia would have been soooo fucked.
I humbly submit my Girl Scout Samosa Pie. Chocolate graham cracker crust, caramel cream cheese filling, homemade whipped cream and toasted coconut topping.
Recipe please!
Crust:
- Preheat oven to 375.
- In a food processor blend 1 cup of chocolate Graham crackers, 1/4 cup white sugar, and a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg (both optional).
- Using stovetop, oven, toaster oven, or microwave, melt 1/2 stick of butter and then pour into the dry mix
- press into pie plate
- cook for 7 minutes
- Set aside for at least a half hour
Note: you may toast the 1 cup of sweetened shredded coconut at the same time, until it gets a nice caramelized coloring.
Filling:
- Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, mix 8 oz of softened cream cheese, 1/4 cup white sugar, 1/4 cup powdered sugar, and 1/2 cup caramel sauce until fluffy.
- Add in 2 cups of heavy cream and beat by hand until you start to get little peaks forming at the top of your motion.
Pie:
- Add filling to the pie and smooth out.
- Refrigerate for 6 hours.
- Once hardened, top with 1 cup of caramel sauce and smooth out the caramel layer
- Top with the coconut
- Drizzle chocolate sauce and caramel sauce across the top. You may use melted chocolate or chocolate syrup, your preference.
That sounds delicious!!!!
Just don't count the calories
1, 2, many, lots.
All. The answer is All
For something simple you can make yourself, oreo balls. Crushed up oreos mixed with cream cheese and dipped in chocolate (I prefer Hersheys cookies and cream chocolate).
LOL wtf how high was the first person that made this? I mean they sound amazing but who was like, imma make these Oreos better by crushing them up and rolling them into balls with cream cheese. I'll bet they are amazing frozen.
Don't know but damn am I glad someone thought of it. They are so good, so easy to make, and so bad for you.
I have to agree that this sounds like "In the Bitchin' Kitchen hosted by Jeff Spicoli"
Mint oreos with dark chocolate.
I submit the humble cannoli for consideration. I cannot share the recipe with you all, because my Grandma will rise up from the grave and haunt me the rest of my life if I share her secret recipe. But trust me, they were amazing. If you're ever in Cleveland, there's a little Italian restaurant at the corner of Lorain Ave and W130th that had a pretty good approximation.
Key Lime pie takes second place.
The wire has a VERY old little Italy with awesome cannolis (Vacarros).
I second the nomination
A simple well done cannoli is fantastic. There's a possibility I've Had that cannoli in Cleveland. I was there during the Feast of Assumption a couple years ago and ate so much pasta and so many cannolis.
The feast is in little Italy (which is on the east side of Cleveland). It's not likely that you had one from that specific restaurant, since most of the vendor tables are just the restaurants there moving outside.
I'm a little jealous that there is an authentic Italian place on the west side. Your options for Italian East of Cleveland are pretty much pizza places, chains and restaurants that specialize in quantity. To get good Italian food you have to drive all the way to an isolated neighborhood in the City (Little Italy, where you can order anything at any restaurant and you'll swear it's the best thing you've ever eaten in your life).
The cannolis you had were authentic. But he's only confirming the place on the west side we're like his grandma's.
I assumed if it was that good it was from one of the places in Little Italy. I have no clue how the city is set up as I was there for one weekend and what a glorious weekend of carbs and giant meatballs it was.
I was definitely lucky to find that little place just at the end of my street. There were certainly not many Italian options on the West side of town, that I could find. My neighborhood mainly had Egyptian and Palestinian joints and one awesome German restaurant/bar (Der Braumeister, which I highly recommend). I think the food was just about the only thing I miss about living there.
2 'secrets' to good cannoli that I can safely share without fear of being cursed with the Malocchio
Dude, are we related? Or are you my Grandma, haunting me from beyond the grave? We have a collection of ancient broomstick handle pieces, saturated with cooking oil, too.
The only thing you missed was the generous dusting of powdered sugar on top, so that if you screw up and breathe in while taking a bite, you explode in a coughing fit triggered by the inhalation of that sugar dust and end up breaking that delightfully thin and delicate shell. Then the whole family gets to laugh at you for the rest of the night.
We might be - I've got 3 bags of powdered sugar in my house right now because my mom doesn't believe that we have stores here in NoVA and brings a new one each year.
Here's my mom teaching my kids how to make shells from a couple of years ago.
Hokiebuzz - It probably would work, you gotta start somewhere. The aluminum/metal ones they sell in cooking stores get too hot and make it hard to take the shells out without breaking them. The wooden ones still get hot but not quite so much. It will take you years to get the patina/seasoning on them. My mom probably makes about 200 hand rolled shells each christmas for family and friends.
Just in case we're not related, is your mom looking to adopt? I'm already fully-grown, gainfully employed and won't be much trouble, except showing up at holiday meals to gorge on desserts.
Would untreated dowels from Home Depot or Lowe's work for cannolis you think? I've tried cannolis before with aluminum foil rolls but they are a pain to remove from the fried dough.
BROWN SUGAR PIE made by my grandmother
Cherry pie
Granny Smith Apple Pie
Peanut butter roll candy
Applesauce cake (made by my aunt Vicki)
I make a really good caramel apple pie, love butter cake with mocha frosting, and I make these blondie type brownies with butterscotch chips, marshmallows, and chocolate chips. I'm not so much of a cake vs. pie guy as "yes, please."
