Has anyone sold their car via a free website and would recommend it for me? In distant past I've used craigslist but that doesn't seem to be as active.

I dumped my daughter's old car at AutoNation yesterday on Philips near Southside. It was nice to be rid of the car but it took them 3 hours to cut the check..."It will just be a few minutes" x 20. Organizationally incompetent.
I've bought and sold on craigslist. Can be quick results if priced right.

Go to Carvana and get a quote. They are offering close to or more private party KBB value. I have done this twice in the past 13 months (two weeks ago actually) and highly recommend it. It is so easy.
Edit to add: they handle the payoff and all title stuff too. All you have to do is report it sold and then take it off your insurance.

Met them at Walmart in Altavista both times. They'll drive 50 miles out I think which somehow they consider Altavista 50 miles from Greensboro lol. I didn't question it.

This is the best way to do it. They will offer you private sale value or close enough that It's just worth it.
Just did their online quote and they are offering 4K below what private sale Edmunds value is.
Have you tried CarMax? Any business will probably offer a little less than Blue Book, but having someone else take care of the paperwork and all of the other necessary stuff should be worth something to you. Your time is money.

Depending on your state's DMV status, any paperwork could be tedious if you have to do anything in person. DMV in Virginia is a nightmare to work with right now.
Selling you do next to nothing with DMV of Virginia. Sign the title and give it to buyer, turn in the plates at DMV
I'm not sure what the car is, but I've always gotten within $500 of KBB value but I've heard sometimes they are low on specific models. They were low on my Dad's truck. Check Vroom as well. Same concept. They will also up their offer by $500 a couple days after. Definitely take it to CarMax for an appraisal too.

After mulling you question for much of the day Fireman, i have come to realize that at 52 years old, and having owned around 20 vehicles both while single and married, that i have not only never bought a brand new car or truck, but have also never sold one, except for scrap. I have driven every vehicle ive owned until it died or was damaged enough in an accident and was not worth fixing anymore. Best of luck however you wind up sellin it!

What's everyone's status with getting into the DMV? I have two trailers to title and the earliest appt I could get was December. Which means there has got to be a ton of shit out there not titled right now
I just registered and titled a trailer a month ago. I had about a two month gap between purchasing it and getting my DMV appointment. I wanted to use the trailer before it was registered/titled so I had copies of the manufacturer's certificate, purchase receipt, and DMV appointment all printed to show an officer in case I was pulled over.
Waiting for an appointment sucks right now but it was by far the best experience I have ever had at a DMV. I was in and out of there in under 15 minutes with plates and title.
I tried selling my Jeep Cherokee on Craigslist and local ads a couple of years ago and it was frustrating to say the least. I had people who would contact me, I would reply, and they would ghost me. I had spam emails that weren't worth the time it took to read them. The cherry on top was an old man who said he was serious and wanted to look at it so I met him and his daughter at a DMV so we could trade the money and he could take care of the transfer. Except then he started to try and nickel and dime me. I had vacuumed and cleaned it prior to showing up but it's about 4 years old at this point. He said the tires were shot (they weren't), the interior needed a thorough cleaning (nope), and then the nail in the coffin was when he wanted to knock $1200 off the price because the navigation system wasn't active. I told him that I just use my phone and that he could use his but after he dicked the dog for a while I just told him to buzz off. Next day I drove to CarMax in Richmond and they cut me a check and I was done inside of an hour.
