If your defense is going to be a sieve for a large portion of the game, you better score points when given the opportunity. When the sieve defense gives you those opportunities, you definitely need to score points. Glad to see us capitalize.

This team will struggle mightily if we ever end up down big time to start a game (see UNC) given our strength and weakness. Being a dominant run-first team with a spotty defense is great as long as you put up points. Also, fuck Matt Ryan.

I am looking forward to French's review of the game.
The defense seemed to get better later in the game [NOTE: "better" is not the same as stellar]. What was the cause? Was it a scheme adjustment or did the players "wake up"? An adjustment would suggest that JHam is capable of making half-time game changes and that promise of growth as a coach is encouraging.

Just want to give a shout out to our much maligned defense. They looked rough in the first half, but looked better and better as the game went on. I don't know if it is just reps, or confidence from the turnovers or the Bud Foster stand-in staring down from the stands, but rather than wear down over the course of the game, they appeared to get better.
And they got it done. BC has scored 26, 24, 22 and 31 in their previous games. The scored 14 last night. Some of it was bad turnovers. But the D did their job even if it felt like BC was moving the ball. Add in a good rushing attack, OL play and a QB who takes care of the ball and I really like the trajectory we are on.

They showed that on the broadcast and I thought that's what happened. In fact, in typical ACCN fashion, they were showing that sideline footage during a 1st and 10 play. By the time they got back to the field it was 2nd and 2 and I was like, huh, guess we got 8 yards on 1st down?

As soon as Herb caught that ball, I told my wife that play was a Touchdown. Absolutely beautiful playcall to get him the ball in space with blockers.
As maligned as our offense has been the last couple years, they are absolutely firing on all cylinders this year. We are going to have to score 40+ every weekend to win with the way our defense plays, but they actually look capable of doing it.

There were two points where the playcalling had me confused/concerned.
1.) Going for 2 at the beginning of the 4th, when we were up three scores. I get trying to make a multiple of 7, but that would have required BC to score more in the 4th than they did in the entire game.
2.) A pass on 2nd down before Hooker's last score. We just needed to chew clock. Fortunately, Hooker scored and we had enough points that the clock didn't matter.

1) Trying to go up 3 full TDs with 13 minutes left shouldn't be confusing. It would take 4 scoring drives to punish missing the extra point (2 TDs, 2 FGs), but it potentially puts us in a better position if they have 3 scoring drives (3 TDs). Sure they didn't score again, but with 13 minutes left none of us knew that was going to happen. This is 100% the right call, and the only call that makes sense.
2) Yeah you want to eat clock, but throwing in 1 pass play seems relatively safe. Keeping open the possibility of the pass stops the defense from completely selling out on the run. Who knows how much the one pass opened up the field for the Hooker run.
I'm not saying we don't have playcalling issues, but I'm not sure why those two plays concerned you. Additionally the selection of those two in particular confuses me. The first one you have a problem with because we were already comfortably in the lead (?), and it left one point off the board. The second one you are suggesting that one pass might have cost the game because it stopped the clock (?) and thus gave them more time to work with. I feel like you either have to pick a position that says "We had enough points. Stop running up the score," or "Take this seriously you don't know what might happen."
Side note: the parenthetical question marks are because I am attempting to interpret what you said, and I'm not sure I got it right. They are not an attempt to be snarky.

We ran the ball on 73% of the plays (actually less than I would have guessed)
I need to ponder this but initially, I am happy we can dominate a game rushing, but I wonder if being one dimensional could bite us in the ass if we come up against a better rushing defense. Basically, even if we don't need to pass, would we ultimately be better for it if we did?

Hooker missed 3 weeks of work with the WR's during fall camp, they had no spring practice and very very limited personal workouts over the summer. The passing game is going to be a growing work the entire season.

Yeah, it works against run of the mill ACC teams. Put us in front opposite Clemson, or even Notre Dame or Miami if they're having a good day, and the QB is gonna need to be effective in the passing game.
Maybe by the time we get to them, our team will have "herd immunity" and the others will be in the midst of their own player impacts, we'll get to play them with guys that are fresher from being held out and hitting their stride for the season, and they'll be pulling guys out of the stands as their normal players are all quarantined.
