This is a key point: there are 30-40 other schools that are in the same boat as VT. We should maybe start playing football with them. Maybe organize around similar sized schools in our regional footprint. Build up some rivalries that mean something to the area and alumni... it just might work.

Nick Saban was making 10 million dollars a year while Greg McElroy - competing as an amateur student- ONLY got a world class 200K valued education, monthly stipend, food, rent, tutoring, medical and priceless exposure on ESPN every Saturday. That just sucked and was unfair. So here is your reform.
The sport needs reform so badly. We need subdivision by afford-levels. We have spent a laughable amount of time pretending that USF and Michigan are competing in the same tier. And now members of the ACC aren't even on the same level of funding because the conference agreed to be strangled slowly with unequal revenue sharing that will compound until FSU and Clemson leave anyway. Great job Jim. Ace leadership.
Wrong. Shane was a great athlete in High School. I played football and baseball with the guy. He was big enough, and a very solid athlete. Really good arm fwiw. WR, backup QB, CF in baseball. All around great player. Five of the guys I graduated with played for VT, and he had the second best career, behind Tim Schnecker, who started at Center during the Mike Vick years.
Which is funny, because his dad was well known to say, "I may have been short, but at least I was slow."

Just another way for ESPN to figure out who gets the money. $$$ for the ads will be influenced by how many people will see it on TV, and ESPN won't give out streaming eyeball numbers to make sure the main cable slots get them a bigger piece of the pie. The teams they choose to put in prime slots will have more valuable advertisement space, ensuring all the schools will go along with whatever they want to do to avoid getting relegated to bad tv slots.
Shit, if it kept us competitive I wouldn't mind at all for VT to go the route of McLaren under Zak Brown and instead of having one main sponsor have about a thousand smaller ones that you continually cycle through over the years.

Look, if your problem is that rich people are never satisfied... I get it. But that's not something we can control. I'm not going to let a couple logos - that I won't be able to remember 10 minutes after the game ends - ruin my experience.
Now, if/when it gets to the point where the advertisement is bigger than the school's logo, then I will join you in outrage. But for now, I don't really care.

Missing the point. The Rose Bowl has more money than god. So do the NY Yankees. So do the Lakers. Literally print their own money. But nah, it's not enough. You can't have long hair and wear the pinstripes, but you can wear the ad patch on the sleeve. You can paint ads on the mound. The Rose Bowl is a multi-million dollar corporation that hosts event for one week of the year. That's not enough though. Need more money from under the seat cushions. Jerry Jones brought the cowboys for 140 million in 1989- the year I graduated high school. 36 years ago. Today they are worth 10.1 BILLION dollars. with a B. That's not enough for Jerry though, nah he needs adds and Nike swooshes everywhere. If it's no big deal, take the fucking ads off. Done. but it is a big deal to most normal fans.
I just cancelled my DirecTV, and I'm not real thrilled at the prospect of having to subscribe to ESPN whatever for $30 a month, so there's what I'll be doing.

You do make a compelling point. If VT is going to bet on itself, why not issue debt to pay for a few years of needed extra funding to do these things to put us into contender status. I see that as better than asking the taxpayer to foot the bill. We should have some skin in the game if we are going to truly go all in and bet on ourselves.
But it almost seems to me like a cop out - make an extreme ask with little chance of it being funded, only to then throw your hands up and say "well we tried, it's not on us!" Make a pitch to the BOV to finance this plan with the anticipated future revenue streams as source of repayment and the university reserves as a backstop.
They are greatly over-estimating the chance that I'm going to continue throwing money into the empty well.
