Of course the goal is 8 wins (or higher) with no embarrassing losses. If it were easy, everybody would be doing it.

This is a long term goal, and fans may well need to realize that Vandy, Duke and Rutgers are better than their historical norms right now, while VT is not. I get why people don't like that - I don't either.

That said, VT is better now than when Pry showed up. Can he continue to improve the team? I hope he can. Because the college football landscape is changing rapidly, and some teams will be left behind.

The fact is that VT doesn't have millions to pay in buyouts every three years, so fans need some level of patience as coaches attempt to dial in team improvements. Nobody ever said it was easy to be a VT fan.

Sorry man, I just think you've picked a really weird hill to die on.

P4 teams that have all recently filled coordinator roles without replacing a head coach:

  • UW: DC - poached by UNC on 12/12, new hire announced on 1/3
  • South Carolina: OC - Poached to be app st HC on 12/7, new hire announced on 12/18 (hire was an analyst on staff)
  • UCLA: OC - fired on 12/5, new hire made on 12/12 (new hire was coaching in cfp)
  • Nebraska: OC - fired midseason, Holgerson replaced him midseason, got the job
  • FSU: OC and DC - new hires made 11/30 and 12/2, respectively
  • Clemson: DC - Fired Wes Goodwin on 1/6, hired PSU's DC on 1/15 (shortly after their final playoff game)
  • Michigan: OC - fired 12/3, new OC hired 12/10
  • Miami: DC - fired 12/31, replacement hired 1/12
  • NC State: DC - poached to be Marshall HC on 12/8, replacement hired 12/31
  • OU: OC - fired in October, replaced 12/2

P4 teams with an open coordinator roles without replacing a head coach:

  • Penn State - DC hired away on 1/15

I used this tracker as my starting point, verified stuff via google too. I didn't include G5 or FCS hires. I did not include co-DC/OC's in this (which Bama, UF, and others are hiring for).

Of the 10ish teams listed above, the longest search (excluding OU's mid-season firing) was half the length of ours. Yea, NC State is the only school on this list that is in a very similar boat to us BUT, there's four ACC teams on this list. UW is P2, but doesn't get full B10 paychecks. UCLA's athletic department is fucked. So it's not like we're comparing apples and oranges here.

This just feels like another one of those things where, at the micro-level, you can explain why every other school was able to fill a position faster than we were. But at the macro level, it's an indication of a problem. It's just like in recruiting - you miss on one guy because he wants to be closer to home, miss on another guy because OSU comes in at the last minute, miss on another guy because he wants a city school, miss on another guy because a rival hired his high school coach - you miss on 5 guys, each for understandable reasons, but when your top 5 can all find a reason to not come to a VT, it's a problem.

So something is wrong with this search. What? I don't know. But I'm sure it's something like recruiting... One guy got more money than we can offer, one guy got an HC gig, one guy had his dream job open when Clemson poached his boss, one guy's wife doesn't want to live in Blacksburg, one guy is afraid he'll be back on the job market next year, etc... Like recruiting, when guys find reasons not to come instead of finding reason to come - even if each reason is bespoke to their situation - it's a problem.

Lol I've been able to talk to him a few times during games this year. Nice guy, very approachable, but you can tell right away he's a stats guy.

And honestly, the Flyers really fucked up with the Brindy trade back in the day. Between him, Justin Williams and Tulsky, the Canes team is very much what the Flyers should be, culturally and competitively

I believe Florida fired their DC in late November, so they have had a vacancy longer than we have.

Can't see the name Rantanen without thinking about Pierre McGuire trying to announce his names

But other schools aren't having this issue. What other school has a returning head coaching and a coordinator vacancy that has been open 6 weeks?

Either:

  1. We have our guy and it's not public yet
  2. Guys we are interested in are holding out for better jobs (not the end of the world, as long as we land someone good, but still a bit of a bummer)
  3. Guys we are interested in have accepted other jobs and our search has restarted (bad)

Odds don't look great imo.
