Here's the thing...Marve was just extended before this season.
That was despite a ho-hum performance and French's analysis about very obvious, telegraphed Blitzes. And no offense at all to French, but if he notes that, you can be sure that opponents Analysts pick up on it too. The weakest unit was the unit he coached.
What's the significance?
It suggests Pry was OK with what was happening on D and didn't see any major issues. He wasn't planning on canning Marve but after a thoroughly underwhelming season, it was made clear to him he needed to make changes to save his job.
Now, he's conducting a search that he wasn't intending on and (yes there is a ton of conjecture) but all the indications are that its not been particularly successful.

It's just optics – if we announce that we're hiring the DC from JMU, but the announcement is made shortly after the Marv firing, then it signals strength to the fan base; "we targeted our guy, and then we went out and got our guy"
If you take a month to make the same exact hire, you can't position it as "going out and getting your guy" - it's inevitably going to be positioned as "we settled for our third or fourth choice."
The latter just kills the vibes. And college football is very much a vibes based business, like it or not.
My cholesterol was creeping back up after controlling my weight for years after Atkins. Finally, my doctor said we needed to address it. Essentially, my doc said it was either or...nuts, twigs and berries with 5 days a week in the gym or statins. And no guarantee the first would do the trick. I opted for the Atorvastatin (gen. Lipitor), and after a couple of weeks for my body to settle into it, I have been pleased with the lack of side effects and the dramatic reduction of my total and bad cholesterol. My personal experience makes me believe that while diet, weight and exercise matter, genetics is the real bugaboo. I know people who work out religiously, eat a plant based diet, and live alcohol and other pleasure free lives, but have high cholesterol. I don't want to be decrepit in my older than now age, but something's gonna get me and I want to at least enjoy life until then, so I faithfully take my med and eat pretty much what I want, with the obvious restrictions such as no more than 1 lb of bacon in the one day a month I have bacon, and cutting back a bit on butter. Everybody's different though, right?
What does it really matter if he hasn't had a DC for a month? They're bringing in people on defense in the portal and there's no coaching going on. Right now, the bigger issue might be not having an S&C coach since they can be having interaction with the players, but they still have some S&C guys on staff.
Did this combo in the 2009 loss to UNC where our punter Brent Bowden played Enter Sandman on bass.
Wasnt maddux a family health reason for transferring close to home?

- Rev Share (AKA House money) = Payment to be on roster AKA Pay for play
- Collective money = 99% pay for play, 1% cow-tailing to boosters
- Endorsements = actual NIL; this is like every athlete's deal with EA sports or Jersey Sales, or Bryce Young's deal with Doctor Pepper or Sam Hartmen's deal with Dollar Shave club, Arch Manning's deal with Gatorade, etc
I would assume that the pay from the university is at least partially for Name, Image, and likeness so that the university is free and clear to use athletes likenesses on the marketing materials. Media guides and tickets have players on them, and I'm sure a lot more im not thinking about right now.
I feel like if this was a problem, there would be a lawsuit about it by now.

That doesn't mean it's o ly for NIL, because it's part of revenue sharing, but I would assume that signing a revenue sharing contract would include NIL.
He is moving up one spot on the most hated fan bases. Hope he is ready for the heat. /s
Agreed. The point is to win football games, not press conferences. I think all of us get wrapped up in "hey, we got the guy that everyone wanted" in both coaching and recruiting. It's a bad mentality to have as ~90% of people don't know what they're talking about.
Whit and Pry need to make the best hire they possibly can. If it's not a hit at the opening press conference, their job is to eat shit until they prove everyone else wrong (it's one of the worst parts of the job but hey, that's what the money is for). The Commies did this with Dan Quinn (instead of hiring a Ben Johnson-type) and are reaping the rewards. Hoping we can do the same.

He's being criticized for not having a DC over a month after firing his previous one.
Presumptively, he's swung and missed on his top candidates (Banks or Poindexter, doesn't really matter) or he wasn't really well-prepared and is now floundering in a search.
Either way, there seems to be a significant lack of direction that doesn't bode well at all for a Coach who has alot to prove in '25.
For sure - if Pry makes a good hire, it's a good hire. If Pry lands Jim Knowles (he's not) that's a good hire no matter when it happens. But if Pry lands the JMU DC a month after JMUs last game, the fan base, boosters, media, etc will be convinced this was the third or fourth choice. That's just more pressure on Pry, and by extension the rest of the team.
This whole saga could be a whole lot of nothing, or it could be the 17th canary in the coal mine.
