Well if universities were allowed not to count that on a budget/cost somewhere/anywhere that would be a game changer for VT and others. Millions "saved" each year.
All makes 100% sense. In VT's case Wiles and Gray used to bring in some really good talent from Florida. We should try that again. The 6 hour radius is a clear vision/strategy- and like all of those, it needs to pay off at some point. I think Fuente tried to reach further, but he couldn't close on a good player if his life depended on it. Let's see it start to pay off, and I'll buy more into it.

I always assumed it was just free, and the cost of the scholarship was just termed a 30k "value". Why does the academic side need to bill for the athletes? They do not really cost the academic side anything.

Meh- they have one of the better players in the ACC, and we couldn't guard him. At the end of the day we are playing pedestrian P4 players at best and our most athletic wing is horribly inconsistent and can't shoot from outside. The 2 freshman are promising, but if Burnham was one of the better players in his league last year, that league sucks. Also no doubt why Sheyer let Schutt go- he plays zero defense. This is not a good or particularly talented basketball team. The maddening piece is that Hammond will get NIL offers and we won't match in the offseason.
I think "Virginia this and Virginia that" is an easy way to say 'our 5-6 hour radius.' We stick to the 5-6 hours radius because:
- Our brand is stronger in that 6 hour radius
- We have less competition (it's easier to go into VA, the Carolinas, or the DMV than it is to go to Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, etc)
- It costs less to send coaches 2-6 hours away than 10 hours away (which makes it easier to build relationships, which makes it easier to maintain our brand)
I'd like French's perspective but from a random guess regional talent could be cyclical, maintaining relationships there could pay off later with relatively little effort.
The announcers made a point towards the end of the game that the officials were letting Stanford play rough. We don't do well in those situations and never have.

# | Hokie Hoops Central: Virginia Tech (6-8) at Stanford (9-5) 9pm ACCN Except it wasn't yesterday. The main focus for about 30 minutes was getting in the paint to score and it was working. It wasn't until the end that they fell back into slinging it around the perimeter.
The Hokies outscored Stanford in the paint 38-20 last night. Their one area that really was lopsided last night was free throw shooting. Stanford got a +10 attempt advantage which created a 12 point margin for made shots. There was not that significant of contact difference on either end last night.
The reason they lost though was the perimeter shooting. Stanford had 3 three pointers in the first half. They had 6 in the second. The Hokies had Burnham's four in the first half, after that they never made another but they only attempted 14 total which is about 9 off their average attempts.
it's also evidence that we're restoring relationships with coaches and important people at regional high school programs. if someone thinks (not you, dc, just a general remark) that we arent letting Jordan Bass's high school coach know we're here if he has second thoughts about the nard dog, then they're silly
i think it's not necessarily a matter of "what did this kid do at his last stop" and more "what can this kid do for us" -- we obv wanted Bass out of high school, staff sees that he could be something useful for us, and is willing to take him on accordingly

That is a good question. Blacksburg is my hometown and I have a few friends that work at VT in admissions and Financial Aid. My understanding is it has to with tuition rates for in state vs out of state.
Since VT has such a money problem, I think they are trying to save a few bucks on in state kids.
My son is now a student at VT. We relocated back to Blacksburg last year from Chattanooga TN. The tuition rate for out of state is more than double what I am paying for in state. My son was able to become a VA resident and had to take 2 classes at a VA Community College to direct transfer to VT to get in state tuition at VT even though he was accepted initially at VT. It costs me $1800 for one semester at Community College but saves over $20k a year in what would have been additional out of state tuition costs.
It's insane to me. But we all know VT tries to do more with less at bargain prices. Until VT changes that mindset and can figure out how to fund the program at the level required to compete with the big boys, we will never have a Championship level team. IMO, we will remain a mediocre 500 or slightly above 500 team.
I also think that Pry is playing the game. He is very good at taking a kid from Virginia to smooth the edges for the "old timers" and then grab kids out of the portal from TX, GA or from name another place USA.
Correct. I can see right through the latest "virginia" hype. The back up LB from a free falling Pitt team is a MUST get... oh, why? He's from Virginia of course.
I've been trying to think lately given this world of billion dollar NIL collectives- that was there ever a time in history where irrational passion for something - donating extra to your college to keep their punter for next year- ever died down? Disco? Cigarette smoking? People point to NASCAR and WWF/WWE, etc. It's an interesting thought. College football fandom is irrational in most places now, IMO. Flat irrational. I sat with 2 PSU fans post boise game at a bar. They were frantically on their phone trying to buy tickets for the game in Miami at any cost. She was looking up flights and complaining about the cost. Through other conversation- I didn't see their W2s of course- but this was a normal working class couple- she was a teacher. Sure, they could have millions in inheritance, etc- you never know- but the conversation was complaining about the costs but we must go- that was clearly the tone. It's out of control now, IMO.

That's not even the worst interaction I've had with Bama fans, by far. Pretty sure I have told this story before on TKP, but I had an Alabama fan break-check me on I-20 outside Tuscaloosa when I was driving a charter bus filled with people they THOUGHT were Tennessee fans or the team. Toying with people's lives over college football is far beyond the pale.
Just picked up a few new pedals - a Boss RV-500, a Boss DD-3, and the Hudson Broadcast AP (which I absolutely love). Still working my way through everything that the RV-500 offers but so far it's great!
