I dunno, I feel like most people who are driven and talented enough to be in the top 0.01% of their field can't turn it off. Bud wants to win, can he turn it off?
I imagine he won't be recruiting or dealing with personnel issues, which is probably 75% of the stress of the job. He's probably only working during the pre-season/season, but he doesn't seem like the type of person who can just clock in/clock out

But we shouldn't fret too much as I do not see any way that historically upstanding football program 🙄 beats Ohio State (assuming they can get by the ND/UGA winner). I mean the last time that PSU was able to beat OSU was in the aforementioned 2016 season. Franklin ain't getting that national championship.

You have to think we already know who the DC is, just not announced yet because their team is still playing. And I would think that getting Bud involved again would need to be something the new DC is asking for rather than being forced upon him.
At least that is what I sincerely hope.
I feel like they wouldn't announce this unless it had already been vetted with the incoming DC for exactly the reason you note in #2.
The real concern with this one is ball security. FSU averages 25.7 ppg off turnovers. Take that away and you balance the game. The problem there is the Hokies are averaging 16.1 turnovers per game. FSU averages 11 steals which fuels transition basketball. Wenzel and Suffren cannot afford to be sloppy with the ball at the top of the key.

It's a clever bit of PR that the SEC gets all the blame in these discussion but make no mistake
SEC struck first by taking OU/Texas. If that doesn't happen, the B10 doesn't go after USC/UCLA, and Oregon/UW aren't driven away from the Pac12. If those moves don't happen, then the SEC and B10 can't demand nearly as much TV money as they do now.
The BIG-10 and the SEC are working towards this eventually together.
I don't think it's the B10/SEC... I think it's the BlueBloods in each conference. In this new world, Alabama has more in common with OSU than they do Ole Miss. The top 20ish teams will leave everyone else behind.
On the surface, this is great right? The best to ever do it lending an eye and some coaching to Pry? what could go wrong? well you could hire a DC with a fragile ego and bring drama. Bud could still have coffee every day with cancer Bellein holding onto 1999. Franklin and Dabo can call Pry desperate and Bud a dinosaur in recruiting.
I'm torn. While part of me is happy to see this, another part of me really wishes he would stay away. Worried about his health and I think there just comes a time to turn the page. Hopefully he is and stays healthy and it really is just an advisory role that (1) is not too stressful for him and (2) does not create friction or too many chefs in the kitchen with the new DC and their staff.

If you're frustrated by the lack of parity, the playoff isn't a problem. The problem is that the monied teams have consolidated into 2 leagues, which means those two leagues can demand more money, which means they have more resources.
The 12 team playoff would have worked fine if the P12 and B12 were still in tact, as they were 2 year ago.

# | And so it begins - CFP to discuss eliminating the auto-bye for conference champions The non P2 schools would get a lot closer to inclusion and being part of the adults table if they simply refused to play P2 teams until there was more equity in competition and revenue. That is much much much more effective than a court room. If VT backed out of the USCe game next year for example and USCe had to play a B1G or SEC team instead the entire schedule, changes would happen and soon. But the non P2 doesn't have the guts to do that, thus they will continue to allow ESPN to keep their boot on our necks and press firmly each year.
Glad to see they are both still living the dream and getting to live abroad.

ASU pulled a VT... Get off the field on a 4th and 12 for Texas- 4th and 12 yes, and you win the game. But they did what mediocre defenses do- they couldn't get a stop when it mattered. 4th and 12 is impossible against a good defense. Texas has a guy wide open. They couldn't get a stop when they absolutely needed one. And they lost.

Man, I was really rooting for ASU against Texas... They had their opportunities. I'm not sure how the 4th quarter targeting was not ruled targeting. That would have put the ball in field goal range, given ASU a first down and potentially set them up to win the game. Not that one play makes/breaks an entire game, but now we're likely going to get exactly what we don't want - an all BiG, SEC final 4. I don't know if I can muster the strength to root for ND. This is a lose-lose for every conference other than the BiG and SEC.

That's more or less the structure of the old BCS, albeit with more teams, that had a flurry of anti-trust suits in various states back in the 2010-2011 timeframe that lead to the four-team playoff and the inclusion of the highest ranked G5 champion. That G5 rep was there as the fig leaf in that structure.
Yes- whenever David Teel writes a million word essay on what the TV deal "wouldn't" be or what schedules "wouldn't" be without this deal, you are simply arguing hypotheticals- and by definition there is no actual value. ND didn't "raise the profile or TV deal"... no you are simply predicting what the ACC couldn't do without it. That is by definition not value.

Any reasonable person knows that they should do away with conference championship games. The reason they will not is the same reason they were created- money. The SEC signed a TWO year agreement with birmingham initially for the SEC title game. Why? They didn't think it would last/make money. Spurrier said that and he also said that the league told him "this better be a great game" before they played in the first one. They won't get rid of the conference champ games until they stop being very very profitable from ESPN money.

suppose I did a deal with you where you give me full access to all of your bank accounts and in return you merely get to look at my shed. You're getting something. But most people would fairly accurately conclude that you got nothing from the deal.
it needs to be settled on the field. no committee. no computers. hell, no rankings for all I care (but I know the talking heads need that to drive traffic, etc)
each conference gets to place their champion in the playoff. Hard stop. Each conference has to structure a league schedule that creates a route for each of its members to win the league indisputably. Each conference needs to allow each team in their league to schedule a set number of non-conference games. It's up to the individual teams to decide what those non-con games are.
If you have more conferences than you have playoff spots, then the strength of your conference champion is subject of debate. But if you want to even be near the conversation, you need to win your league. That makes every game matter. And I don't give two shits if the "two best teams" in the country are in the same conference. Too fucking bad. One of them has to win the league and only one of them gets to the playoff. Prove it on the field. If you're not able to beat the best team in your league you're not championship worthy. I'm tired of these second chance bullshit opportunities that 2-loss teams get just because "they played a harder schedule". STFU. Win the games you play. Let your play on the field speak for itself. Bunch of GD snowflakes.
