# | Teel Time, ACC Athletic Directors to vote on 8 or 9 game conference schedule Friday. Well let's see...the Wisconsin games originally scheduled for 2008 and 2009 were replaced by the Nebraska series. The first rescheduled games for 2016 & 2017 were replaced by Tennessee & WVU. The second rescheduled games for 2019 & 2020 are replaced by Notre Dame & Penn St or Michigan (take your pick). And the games rescheduled for 2024 & 2025 are one of the 2 P5 OOC games scheduled for that year. So the facts say it isn't a challenge.
What does the next 2 seasons have to do with anything? The ACCN is driving this. Any change requiring adding 2 P5 OOC games wouldn't kick in until 2019 at the earliest.
Escape clauses? True, as they were written under the old environment. But can bet that if 2 P5 OOC are required those escape clauses will become far more restrictive - if for no reason than both schools know they need those games either by requirement or out of necessity for strength of schedule.
True that no conference requires 2 P5 OOC games...yet. But I'm not sure why that matters. Virtually every P5 school is effectively scheduling at least 10 P5 schools going forward and the math works out just fine. So whether it's 9+1 or 8+2 - and you throw in ND, BYU and the Service academies - it's still basically a zero sum game. It presents little challenge now and will present even less of a challenge going forward as ADs schedule games with more clarity about the future requirements.
How many non-conf ACC series have been scheduled so far? One? No one expects those to become common and those few that have been scheduled aren't solely being done due to inability to find an opponent. And to be honest why does it matter? If VT scheduled Louisville as an OOC series, would people really care if it didn't count against the conf record?
As a VT football fan, I happen to think that a 8+2 results in a more interesting schedule over time and doesn't add one more competitive imbalance to determining a conference champion. But if one prefers the games created by 9+1 over the 8+2, fine. However using the "8+2 is a challenge from a scheduling perspective" as a strike against the 8+2 is rationalization, pure and simple...particularly from VTs perspective.

Yep, me too. Lived in Va Beach and surfed the Outer Banks religiously from 1976 through 1980 (when my Dad was stationed to Puerto Rico - as a surfer, THAT was awesome!), weekly for most of the year. The surf quality vs VB is SO much better.
The outer banks have changed a lot since then.

# | With UNC's Fast-Paced Offense on Deck, Bud Foster Expects to be "Playing Against Ourselves" I wouldn't look too much into the Special Teams performance against ECU, as the Pirates had their share of ST issues against UCF last week as well. It very well could be the Pirates are just that bad at kicking the ball.
I just ask annoying Cat Lady over in Cubicle 302 what she thinks. She's pure gold.
For home games in Blacksburg, I always will make sure the visiting teams fans feel welcome and would want to come back the next time their team is in on the schedule. I'll shake their hands, and say something like "Welcome to Blacksburg/Virginia Tech- Glad you guys made the trip up for the game!" Hopefully that simple gesture shows the opposing fans of why Virginia Tech and Blacksburg is a special place, and why it is Home.
That being said, it is always nice when traveling with the Hokies when other school's fans do the same.

I know the UNC kicker won the game for them against FSU with a 54 yard field goal. Joey Slye has been pretty consistent for us but has yet to kick a field goal in an game for anything close to that distance.
Mitchell Ludwig, our punter, started off slowly but has improved. I don't know anything about their punter.
Cam's blocked punt and Stroman's big return were a welcomed reminder of the Beamer Ball in its hayday, but even the most optimistic of us can't expect that every week (hope for it, yes; but to expect it, is too much). How is the UNC return game?
And then there is the weather. A wet ball and windy conditions are wild cards that make things even more unpredictable. Both teams have to play in the same conditions so it ought to be a neutral factor, but I remember some really ugly play by VT in games in the rain last year. It is encouraging to hear that the coaching staff seem to have placed an emphasis on preping for the weather.
My wife and I have tickets for this game. I hope that we are "singing in the rain" this year.

He can legitimately preach the work ethic of the LPD because he is a worker. If nothing else players who come under his tutelage are going to know what effort and hard work looks like. And even more importantly will connect that effort to the outcomes that follow. This is an asset that will serve them well. It's good to be a Hokie.

# | With UNC's Fast-Paced Offense on Deck, Bud Foster Expects to be "Playing Against Ourselves" I mean, if you look at how bad UNC's defense is this year, we really should set a new season high in offensive production. They are not good at all, and if the weather ends up being nice, it really should help us out. Plus, we should have the advantage of having seen the UNC offense numerous times before, and UNC still hasn't had an opportunity to really see what we do.
For what it's worth, Grantland was kinda sorta resurrected in theringer.com. They lost a lot of their best writers, but a good number stuck around. I don't think it's nearly as good as Grantland at the moment, but it's a start.

At this time yesterday the model had the storm track going right over Raleigh, and now it looks like it might maybe touch the coast. That's definitely good news

It allows a lot of different blitzing and coverage options to take place. This will keep UNC's offense guessing. I do recall Trubisky throwing that pick-six two years ago, so we know he does make mistakes. I am worried about the one on one match ups with our secondary and UNC's WR's. Greg Stroman, to me, is a liability in the secondary. I know he had two picks against Liberty, but that was against Liberty. He got beat a few times in one on one against Tennessee. UNC has wide outs similar to Tennessee. I think Adonis, Chuck and Brandon need to have a huge game. This is definitely one of the most intriguing match ups of the weekend. Trubisky is playing at a very high level, completing 76% of his passes, with no picks. However, ECU's QB Phillip Nelson came into the match up against VT with a completion rate of 77% and he only managed to complete 50% of his passes against us. So it'll be really interesting to see how this plays out. It'll surely be a test for Trubisky. I see our DE's creating havoc in the backfield though. Ekanem is playing like a man possessed right now and I think that continues in this game. UNC is an experienced and highly tested team. There is no doubting that they are resilient. However, they did struggle mightily against JMU, soooo.... I really just cannot wait for this game. I think we have what it takes to beat UNC, it'll just come down to executing.
